im pretty sure the .7z files dont work with surreal XX b4. i tried using them and the ronm didnt show up on the rom list so i would assume it doesn't read the .7z file.

kinda off topic but im fiddling around with adding 7z support into xSnes9x. i have it working somewhat but in some instances 7z decoding requires > 80 megabytes of ram allocated, yikes

i can use virtual memory tricks to make it work, but then it becomes a question of feasibility - if and i stress if with VMM it takes say less than 10 seconds to extract and load a rom from 7z then id considering putting it into the next build.

otherwise its a pipe dream

From what I have read about the 7z format.. is that you can list all the files in the archive without extracting anything.. you can also extract a single file from the archive quite easily from the command line in linux.  I think if a submenu could be added after selecting a 7z file,  that list the files.. then you can select which rom you want.. you might be able to get it to work.

Im no coder though.. but I can do some bash scripting here and there :D

EDIT:  Id love to see 7z support added to these emu's... the compression is amazing with 7z.

ive done all that and its working fine..its the extracting that is a memory hog...it runs fine on a 128 meg xbox but on a standard xbox some 7z archives with lots of files in them need more than 64 meg to extract

gotcha... I wasn't sure if it would need all the memory to pull out file out of the archive.  But you have it working.. so that is definatly a plus biggrin.gif

How many games are you putting into a single 7z archive anyways? Most of the people I know group up all the different versions of the same game in a single 7z file so they can take advantage of the few changes between versions for some high compression rates. I expect that's what most people will end up doing. (That's what's known as a "merged set" since I remember you saying you didn't know what they were over on your board a while ago.)

It would be nice to be able to do what some of the XPort emulators allow and let you select the file within the zip/7z to execute so you can select "Donkey Kong Country.zip/7z" and then get a dialog box with the file list from the zip.. so you got your v1.1's v1.2's, translations, trainers, Japanese and European versions all in one archive.

(Slightly off-topic, but are the command line launching options working with your current code?)

Thanks for continuing to work on xSNES9x.

As an alternative to .7z , Nach made up his own compression format for NSRT (rom renaming util ala goodsnes) called JMA, wich gets better compression for snes roms than even 7z

Right now i think zsnes and snes9x are both the only apps to extract it, no standalone.

Adding support might be easier since its already native to snes9x.

but hell, what do i know ;/

I didn t try 7z support because it is already slow on windows and not as useable as zip files, so what you say is what I was thinking, thx for the info, I really don t see the interested to read 7z files.
BTW did you try with what some users want (a big 7z files with all roms zipped in it), I think it would take even much memory and cause more problems.

Awesome

I made a thread about this on your xsnes9x forums a while back.

Back in like beta 3-4 savesates were loaded using a button combo.

so Would it be possible to add the possibility to map the ingame menu to a combo (something like start+RTrigger)

I hate to make requests, im just asking if the possibility is already coded, but you didnt bother to put an option for it since it seems useless (its not for me, the gamepad i use doesnt have joysticks ;/  )

I also know you hate GUI work, so perhaps just add the possibility to edit it in the TDATA xsnes9x.ini ?

Yeah, since there isnt really an explanation for what you need to do...

7z files are 7-zip files. Its a compression format like winrar or winzip. To play these roms in Sureal XXX you need to extract the rom file from the 7z file. To do this use the 7-zip file manager from www.7-zip.org

Usually when you open a 7z file with this there are several different versions of the same game (different regions etc) in a surreal xxx supported format. Just extract the one you want to use and put that on your xbox

I heard there is a way to convert .7z to .zip with this program but I can't figure it out.  Does anyone know how??
