If you read most of these posts, most people care about just being able to play the games, or they keep on asking when is the next Surreal comming out. Now you might want a feel of nostalgia, but if is that important and you wanted that, play the NES and atari that you own, which I own my own.
I hated the NES
controller, and think if there was an older cotroller to be used it would be SNES
controller because of feel and buttons. I don't want to have to press a special combination of buttons to get out of the game when all I have to do is press the right analogue. I truley like the s-
controller. I prefer comfort over nostalgia.
In truth I feel that it would be more of hassle having multiple types of
controllers for a system. I wouldn't want to have to keep switching out
controllers to play different games. The ablity to have the amount of buttons on the xbox
controller allows a player to switch from one program to the next without changing it out for something else. For a little while I'll play be playing Mike Tyson's Punchout, another I'll be play Street Fighter Alpha 3, then I will switch to Castlevania Symphony of the Night, and not to mention my normal xbox games and other emulators.
I don't speak for the gaming audience, and I didn't mean to, but playing a
controller from almost 20 years ago just doesn't excite me much. The atari paddle, I understand that more then the NES
controller, but still doesn't give me a feeling of want as well, but whatever floats your boat.
xbox doesn't have the driver for those controllers so they won't work. windows has a universal driver that works with any cheap controller
He never said you "HAD" to live with it, but by the fact that you would have to do so much for something so unimportant, it was more of a suggestion.
If you don't want to live with it, do the soldering work yourself.
"Gimme Generation"? There are a lot of different generations on this forum. Also the fact is that arcade forums treat things differently because a lot of them are purists. If you're in an emulation forum, why are you trying to be a purist? Thats like asking to be able to play Hendrix albums on a CD player. You get my drift? Emulation is made to bring the old in the era of now.
There is no generation involved in your argument, its the purists and emulators, and it seems you're stuck right in the middle of both groups. Thats your own right and opinion, but why speak of the opinions of the forum as if they are some comformity that has gone wrong?
re: Emulation is made to bring the old in the era of now
Dude,
I'm just trying to play games on my xbox with the controller they were created for...
It just seems that you only get posts from naysayers when you are looking for some creative input.
Can someone explain the HID difference? Or the difficulty in bringing the driver in Windows that allows the retropad to work over to the box?
Take an old NES con, and gut it. Then take your xbox con and rmove all the guts. Pop the Dpad and the X and A button into the NES. Paint to your prefernece. Tie off all the other wires, and voila!!!

plain and simple, xbox doesn't use windows and it must have a driver written for it just like you need to use a driver for the xbox controller on the pc.
if you want it so bad, do the work for yourself as most of us are happy with using xbox controller or using an adapter for other controller types.
Xport himself has said it isn't going to happen! This thread should be closed. No one seems to understand how hard it is to add drivers that are not included in the Xbox developemnt kit.
There should be a pinned topic "HOW TO GET USB CONTROLLERS ON YOUR XBOX!!!"
Prican, Akuma, and I tried to explain, but they don't wanted to listen, I would be more than happy if Iriez would close this one. Peace
I guess here's my answer

Big Money...No Whammies........STOP!
Oh he had better put out a tutorial!
well all he did was rewire the nes controller to a male serial plug and modified s controller to add female serial plug to allow it to be plugged and work with the buttons its assigned to.
this is something many ppl do to add other type of controllers to xbox (read the arcade topic thats on page 2 or 3).
if you have the skills to solder, you can pretty much do this yourself as its nothing more then hacking a xbox controller
i'm pretty sure you wouldn't be able to do it with a USB NES controller. i'm pretty sure that you could infact do some ghetto rigging of a normal NES controller and an xbox controller though.
hmm, judging from the post above, i'd be interested in making an s controller that i could plug an NES or SNES pad into... maybe i'll make it ... only time will tell
I knwo there is a tutorial for this somewhere, because I've seen it, I think in the tutorial they used a genesis controller but I'm sure it's pretty musch the same concept, you're soldering wires onto the xbox controller board to the up down left right, a, and b buttons so that when they're pressed on the nes controller they send signal through the xbox controller......hopefully I didn't confuse you any more than you already were....
Just a sidenote, I use a retrocon and PS2 to xbox adapter....works awesome and was much less work....
Well if you wired the xbox contacts into a serial connector then you could connect anything Genesis, snes, atari....and just plug it in...
you would have to power the controller...should be easy enough...but then you just run wire from the contacts on the nes to the contacts on the xbox???
you cant uses the wires in the nes wire because they use strobing...
Looks like another long night of soldering:D

one step closer
take on of the cheapo controllers that you can get for 6 ,
its hell easier to solder than the M$ ones.
ok....I found it......took awhile.....here you go man....good luck!
Genesis Controller mod
From what I've researched you could use a 9pin serial and it would be able to handle the atari Joystick, Nes controller, and SMS controller...
I've already run to radio shack and purchased the necessary junk...
I'll post the pics tomorrow...
Make a tutorial too
I'm gonna have to jump on eBay and pick up two
controllers of each system, heh, there goes my paycheck
Edit: Anyone know of any tutorials that allow for analog input so I can hack up my 64
controller?
That genesis hack uses a VGA cable...nice idea...uses a 15 pin connector...
I was thinking that hacking an NES controller is not that bad since they are sold in tons of places for 2 bucks...so I was gonna use a 9 pin so that I wouldn't have to hack the atari, coleco, or master system controllers since they are not so easy to come across...but 9pins are not enough for Genesis or Snes...
A 15 pin VGA cable will allow for any controller to be used with the same xbox controller hack...but then you will have to hack the cord on all the controllers that you plan on using...
I'm thinking I'll stick with the 9pin for tonight...
Thanks for that tutorial Kean
No problem....so, you guys have got me curious enough about this mod that I decided I'm gonna have to do this oneI'm gonna do the VGA Cable so I can have both NES and Genesis Controllers...it's gonna take me a couple weeks to get the controllers and the connectors.....I'll keep you posted.....keep us posted on how it goes and let us know what problems you run into so we can all benefit from your hard work
if more is needed, you could use a printer port tho thats might need some work to fit the controller heh
follow the link in my signature, i have no time to update,
but maybe you can get some ideas from it.
well the main point is to use a cheap shit controller (noticed he used an interact one) so your m$ controllers can be left as is
Alright...
I just got knocked out by Tyson...USING THE NES GAMEPAD!!!
It works 100%...
You have to cut the chip out of the NES controller
You do not need a power line
I'll post a more complete post with hi-res pictures of the job tomorrow morning...
Thank you for all your help!!!!
Heres the NES Board layout....
I believe the neccessary word required here is 'crop'.
The goal of an emulator is to simulate the "real thing". So a NES emulator should be indestinguishable from the real thing, with regards to playing the game. This means that it should be displayed on a TV, controlled with original NES game controllers, and the graphics, sound, etc. should be just like the real NES.
So far the Xbox comes close, but it has weak support for NES game controllers.
one day i thought it would be cool to have some demultiplex chips that convert the genesis, nes signla onto different wires, so there would be no need to hack every singel controller, only matter we had to cut the connectors out of the old consoles
Hoppity...
Circuit tester...
Cut the cord put one end of the tester on pin one and then touch each wire till you get a circuit...
Here are some more shots...I'm too lazy to type the solder spots out...my cheat sheet is one of the pics...
Just solder one wire from the monitor/serial plug to the associated point (i.e. TP13)...
Enjoy...

thank you so much man
I'll be sure to post up pics of my hacked up SNES controllers when i get them from ebay and make them
Awesome...I'll do the same...
I may rip the other memory cart slot out and stick a 9 pin in also so I won't have to modify the atari joystick...
I have a genesis 6 button and an SNES laying around...I'll give them a shot soon...
Also some things I ran across...
I used an old huge xbox controller...The solder joints were way too small on the S... everyone seems to agree that after market controllers are the way to go but I didn't have one laying around...
I also disconnected the rumble motors...last thing I want is for those friggin things to rattle a solder loose...
well post the pix when you make it...
will do ... althought i'm looking at my generic xbox pad ... i'm having trouble looking at the circuit board and figuring out what button coresponds to what solder point. the NES pad was easy cuz its so basic. know any online tuts or pics or something?
I'm not sure...can you post a high res pic of the board...I bet I can tell you from the picture if it's possible or not...
Is there anyway an N64 controller can be done like this?
not easily. The N64 Joystick, for example is analog. try finding a 30 wire shielded cable. (probably only the old parralel cord matches that desciption.)
Otherwise you could cannibalize a small xbox
controller and try to fit it's guts into a N64 pad. That is impossible at best. Mostly becuase of the button placement.
here is the information you seek.
If you look closely at the control stick, there is about 6-8 wires attached. They may either be useful, or useless. It doesn't seem likely that they do anything other than send data. If someone could find out how it relates to the xbox control stick, they could find out how many wires it would take.
I am willing to try this mod, and I definately will, however it seems hard to do.
P.S. For the buttons, triggers and ground, that is 15 wires.
A standard parralel port cable has 25 wires. So it would be A MUST for the control stick to be 10 wires or less.
It's possible to do, and I'm confident I might be the one to write a tutorial on it, depending on those analog joystick wires
My optical usb mouse runs quite happily on my xbox running xSnes9X, Mario Paint using an xbox 2 female usb cable, its just plug and play
works nice no problems
"bump" this topic shoiuld be pinned it helped me with alot of things and id like to see a tut for the nes pad i might write one as sonn as im doen with mine just need a crap xbox paddle now
here is a great tutorial for hacking a NES
controller to work with a DC
controller, basically the same idea. It sure helped with my DC-in-a-NES-Mod (see sig.

)
anyways, Mr. Insane, something very wierd and coincidental I thought I'd point out, I am listening to Radiohead's "I Am Citizen Insane" as I type

thought it was funny cosidering your name !
Is is possible that *nix running on your xbox would recognize those usb retrozone controllers so that you'd be able to use them with *nix emu's?
Just wondering
