Title: 30 Lives In Contra Emulated?
Post by: Griffen37 on September 02, 2004, 05:26:00 PM
First, I apologize if this has been covered elsewhere.  I did a search.  I determined that 1) there will never be a Game-Genie device for xbox that allows you to cheat xbox games; 2) there are a million roms I have never heard of that many members think are must-owns; and 3) XPort is unbelievably involved with this stuff and has written more programs than the creative team for Friends; but ... I couldn't find the answer to this question:

Can you get the 30 lives in Contra using FCEUltra?  I've tried up-up-down-down-left-right-left-right-B-A-B-A-select-start to no avail.

I don't know about anyone else here, but I suck at that game and need the 30 lives just to get past the first main "boss" screen.  Can this be done?  Do I need to find a cheat somewhere and upload it?  I haven't understood the cheat functions of FCEUltra -- I saw this thread in particular: http://forums.xbox-s...=fceultra cheat
but I don't get how to do it either.  I never used game genie, and yes, I read the FAQs, even the general ones.  Is the controller code I listed something that would work for this?

Awesome, thank you.  I will try first thing when I get home from work -- I if I get to go home, that is.

Of course it works, the roms are copies of the exact software that is found on the original cartridge so if it worked on the original cart it will for sure work on the emulator. I have used it on the cart and on the xbox fce emulator so I can confirm that  it works. Hell last week some friends and I made up a drinking game involving contra and the extra life code. Basicly you need contra with the extra lives code set for a two player game and three friends. two people are team red and the other two are team blue. You play and when you die you pass the control to your partner and take a drink. I suppose this could be used on any two player platform game but contra was the game that we decided to play with it and I must say by the end of the game it did the trick.

Yeah, "by the end of the game" would never happen for me if I were blitzed.  I beat Spider-Man 2 for xbox, but can't get through 2 levels of Contra and I've owned that for like 15 years.

Also, I knew it was an exact copy, that's why I assumed it would work.  Wonder why my NES cartridge used to be B-A twice, or why I remember that.  Maybe I'll start blowing into it and see if I can get it to load up to test my memory.  Thanks to both of you.

You guys all got this to work?  I think I'm some kind of 'tard.  I just got home and have been trying for 10 minutes.  Is there a trick to hitting the xBox dpad correctly?  I know I'm out of practice, but WTF?  Am I starting too early?  Too late?  Finishing too early, too late?  I think I need to find a Nintendo Power ® forum before you guys kick me out.

Are you sure you are hitting B, A as it is mapped and not the ACTUAL B, A on the xbox controller?

Actually, I wasn't the first few times, but I already thought of that, and yes, I'm hitting X-A, not B-A.

Edit:  Just found this on the web and thought it was too good not to share:
"Nowadays, if I really wanted to impress my friends, I'd need a nice car, a well-paying job that I enjoy, & a beautiful girl that'll actually stick around for more than 4 weeks. Back then, if you could beat Contra without the code, you could pretty much start your own religion."  Check out this guy's walkthrough and the quote at:

While there is no general cheat device for the XBox, all of the projects I've done have cheat code searching in them.  FCEUltraX also has Game Genie support in addition to the standard cheat-code searching feature.

XPort:

Yes, I realize I was unclear.  I recognize that you have built in game-genie codes to all of your projects.  Thank you.  I meant that there would be no game-genie device for actual xbox games.  Regardless, great work with all of your programs.

room88:

Though I appreciate the recco, I have 2 issues with your post:

1) Oh, great, so there's a helicopter at the end!?! That ruins the whole game.  Now what am I gonna play?  I thought I made clear that I'm terrible at the game.  I've clearly never made it to the end.

2) Seriously, though, while Gryzor may be better,  I don't own the cartridge -- I don't have the ROM.  I know they're out there and I know many have a ton of ROMS, but not I.  I also have the stock HD and don't plan to upgrade (I need a new computer before I need more room on the xbox).  Thank you for the info, though.  I'm sure you've made a lot of peoples' days by giving them a new way to play the game.

Crobar:

Yes, a save state right at the beginning with the 30 lives already entered would be superb.  If anyone has that, or knows it is available, clue us in so we can go find it.  Don't tell us where unless that is ok (can I ask for a save state on here, I am not asking for programs or romz or filez?).  Oh, and the Cheat is not dead.

You must be the only guy who can't get it to work.  (user error?) laugh.gif

start up the game.
the Contra title screen will start scrolling in from the right.

Press UP, UP, DOWN, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT, B, A, START

Once you hit 'start' the screen will stop scrolling and instead snap into place. (i.e. you should have completed it before the screen finishes scrolling).

Also, make sure you pressing the directions precisely on the directional pad.. (i.e. right and not down+right)

Good luck. And let me know if you need Gryzor wink.gif

I love this game so much, that I added extra buttons for it.

The Y Button is an auto-fire/rapid fire feature. I have the number set to 2.
The B Button is an extra jump button.

I also have the game genie codes on where if you die, you automaticly have the spread gun. and infinite lives. Play that game with the setup I just described, and with another person. It's so much fun. You tear so much shit up!

First off, thank you all.  Whether it was my inability to enter the code or the particular version of the game that I have, the answer was that I have to wait until it stops scrolling to enter u-u-d-d-l-r-l-r-b-a-start.  Given that I know I used to frantically key it in with a double b-a and a select start while it was scrolling, I know there must be some differences.  Regardless, it worked.  Thank you all.  But, umm, Varsis, get some help, man.

WOW Gryzor is awesome!!

Jap versions of games are always so much better!!

Looks like my US rom of Contra is taking a backseat from now on! Does anyone know if there's boxart and cartridge pics for this game? Cause every game I have in my favorites has a cartridge pic and the boxart pic as well. Thanks for mentioning this game ,room88! smile.gif

BUMP - So does anyone know of any game genie codes for this game? I tried the regular US game genie codes, but the game crashes. I've been searching around for awhile, and have come up empty.

Wait...in all the mags I've ever read, and websites I've visited, I have never seen the Konami code referred to as having two BA button presses.  Where have you guys been looking?  blink.gif

Oh yeah, dose anybody remember what codes these games went to?

Code #1: down, R, up, L, Y, B

Code #2: down, up, left, left, A, right, down

#1 - Street Fighter II The World Warriors "SNES" On controller 1 when the "Capcom" logo appears.

#2 - Mortal Kombat "Genesis" On controller 1 at the menu select screen. This is the famous DULLARD code. It opens "Cheat Enabled"

Now, what's my prize? I know! Someone telling me where I can find game genie codes for Gryzor!!  biggrin.gif

ALSO I forgot to add this. That code for Street Fighter II, it makes the title screen Blue, instead of black, and during 2 player mode, both players can select the same character!

np. I too was surprised when I played Gryzor over the U.S. Contra.. Especially after playing it for all these years, to play it with all those little additional things was really cool and surprising to see smile.gif

And no, sorry I don't know any Game Genie codes sad.gif

I thought that the Contra Shrine at Classicgaming.com had the gryzor art.. but I don't see it there anymore..  http://www.classicgaming.com/contra/
