Title: Xsnes9x 141-1
Post by: DK|Masters on November 17, 2003, 02:45:00 AM
I tested the new wip version of xsnes9x and it is really great.
It does support trackker music. yippi :) XM, S3M, IT, MOD
This is really really great because they sounds much better then SID Music.
FOr all who don'T know, XM,S3M,IT,MOD files are music files made by tracker programms.
THe music is like AMIGA MUSIC from great demos and games.

The graphics are much more like the one from the real snes know. Somehow it looks all nicer.

Thank you Lantus for this great release

The new xSNES9x rocks, and despite it being in WIP stage I haven't found many bugs. (read = any) The new graphics filter make the graphics seem that much better.

I've noticed one 'error' in Seiken Densetsu 3 - I'm not even sure if you can call it an error - if you have AdvanceMAME or any other graphics filter enabled, the sound timing will be off-key whenever Seiken Densetsu 3 switches from low-resolution to high-resolution (whenever a text message appears). When it switches back to low-resolution, the music timing is fine. The framerate stays at 60fps, however - even in high res mode. (so I don't think it has to do with the Xbox not being fast enough to interpolate the hi-res image x2)

Perhaps a dirty hack could be implemented - whenever one of the graphics filters is enabled, lo to hi resolution switching (such as in SD3) should be disabled.

the issue is very much the cause of filters. Because its in high res - as you correctly pointed out - the xbox is struggling a bit.

this is one of the reasons why im not a big fan of software filters.

the 'hack' you mentioned seems possible -  in fact they do this in Win32 Snes9x. However because your going from filter X to No filter you will still notice some kind of translation in the pixels. Im not sure how good this would look but ill investigate.

Lantus, can we be expecting HDTV support anytime soon?  I can only imagine how much better this emulator would look like at 480p.  I apologize if it is indeed in this new WIP build as I haven't had the chance to test it.

with regards to HDTV..its been in xSnes9x for quite some time now. Some people swear it doesnt work for them while others claim it works perfectly (even 1080i).

Personally i dont own a HDTV, its very difficult coding "blind" in this fashion - id love to hear feedback from HDTV users how the new build works for them

I know my TV is odd so let me ask if this happens to anyone while playing Chrono Trigger.

In some areas like on the world map the screen position is at full screen just as I had set it.

When you are at Chronos house or at the Millinium fair it seems as if the screen position moves because I get a black bar at the bottom for 3/4 of the screen.

I have not expirenced this in any of the other games I have tried.

Does this happens in someones else TV?

I'm curious of this myself. I was so excited when ZSNES finally supported Metal Combat: Falcon's Revenge, but then I found out how broken the light gun support had gotten...

Speaking of which, has anyone tried Metal Combat in XSNES9x? I forget which chip exactly it used, but it had a special texture compression processor onboard. I think it was called the OBC-1.

yes metal combat works fine.

however the goodsnes rom of metal combat has a bad header. you will know when you load it on xSnes9x it will claim its a Super-FX rom. You can correct this by running the rom using NSRT or some other tool.

the end result being you want 'OBC-1' displayed on the rom information, otherwise the rom wont work correctly.

i think Cowering does a great job with the Good tools, however he is very anal about removing things from the database that are wrong.

damn dial-up....just a few more minutes.....

haven't uploaded to xbox yet, but the 'Phantasia' skin is still not phantasia, but terranigma. maybe you're not naming that folder after 'Tales of Phantasia,' but it's misleading, don't you think?

now i'm off to actually play something.

Street Fighter Alpha 2 does not work for me. I have three different rom versions of that game, and all of them are graphic related problems. Plus the Megaman X games, bart's nightmare, mortal kombat 2, all have really bad sound, backround sound problems. And it's funny, i remember seeing a screenshot of SFA2 for xsnes9x somewhere on the internet? curious.
Title: Xsnes9x 141-1
Post by: pCeSlAyEr on November 17, 2003, 12:24:00 PM
infidelity the sfa2 problem is because this version of snes9x cannot uncompress the graphics of that rom... actually no Emu can do it yet atleast I don't think so.. I know they recently found a way to do it but I don't think it has been implemented as of yet..

you will need uncompressed graphics packs for sfa2 and a few other games to work correctly...

as for the other games u mentioned... emulation isn't perfect... some titles won't play correctly or whatever.. as time goes on im sure the sound will be fixed in updates..

Is there a reason that the sound is stuttery?  I'm using a regular NTSC TV with I guess the 2X filter that makes the game look original, none of that blur crap.  Everything seems good except the sound stuttering.

more information needed. Which rom? what kind of Xbox..PAL or NTSC..What region rom?

were you using filters? Which?

you need to be more detailed than "the sound it stuttery".

personally i havent noticed any sound stutter at all.

If this was a reply to me, then I was actually talking about 2 different menus that you can't go any faster in, specifically the menu you get when you hit start and then while in a game the menu you get when you click the right thumbstick.  In both of these menus would it be possible to enable L and R for faster scrolling thru them or at the least maybe making to that that you can hold the d-pad down instead of pressing it a zillion times to move up/down thru the menu.  If this is already possible sorry I must have missed it smile.gif

Excellent emulator thanks.

I'm not suffering any slow down problems with the filters (of course I only play the mario series). They look excellent.

I'm glad the turbo has been moved off from the trigger. I just couldn't stand when I would bump that before and watch my guy run 50 mph into the boiling lava.

Screenshots look excellent in the rom browser table. I'm just confirming that the screenshots do not work in Favorites mode.

Thanks for this terrific emulator

chronotrigger is a wierd rom.

by default it runs at 256x224 res.

however during battle scene, when the status/hitpoints pops up for a few frames it switches to overscaned 256x239 then switches back down to 256x224.

the black bar down the bottom is the extra scanlines from 225 to 239.

Same with supar mario RPG, it switches resolution ingame too, and this also results in off centered screens. I wonder if this can be fixed, or is it difficult to do?

I've noticed a problem in Star Fox (all versions). Try playing the first level with a software filter such as AdvanceMAME or 2xSai enabled. The music plays way too slow yet the FPS display never drops below 60. Turn off the filter and it speeds right back up to where it should be.

lantus ive noticed that the alignment of the lightgun is off a bit with the cursor... the cursor always seems to be a bit to the right of where im actually aiming... perhaps adding another calibration point in the lower right corner would work? maybe... and maybe a way to disable the cursor in a future release.... its no big deal.. I can see where im aiming even if im sitting crooked as hell... but sometimes i'd rather try having a bit of skill and use no cursor.. but then again the calibration would have to be perfect...

any ways... nice updates... always a pleasure using one of your releases..

Not sure if this was brought up, if you are playing certain games and you get an error message "this game wasn't designed for this system"  , just make sure you uncheck "force ntsc" and "force PAL" in the rom options and everything should work fine.

Light gun worked flawlessly when I played lethal enforcers. This is a top-notch emulator lantus! Thanks for your brilliant work!

I love the mp3 support now also, I have been playing remixed super nintendo songs that can be downloaded for free at:

The emulator is fantastic. However I can not for the life of me figure out how to view a screenshot, or snapshots as the help file said. I've search this website up and down and simply can't find a definative answer in all these posts, I've searched all over. Do I have to make a new directory? Tried putting them in preview folder, can't find any information anywhere in the official faq. Any help would be appreciated.

not gonna happen. Having multi tap set by default actually breaks alot of games. The Snes9x team agree with me -  It's more trouble than its worth. They have removed it as well.

Well then maybe you could have per-game settings like XPort's emus. I know you must get tired of ppl asking you to implement features "like XPort's", but all those little extras really make a difference to alot of ppl happy.gif

I made the new xsnes9x 1.41 nov.17 version on dvd-r. and put some roms on there(that worked on the version 1.04)and it comes up with the menu and roms list but when I select a rom it says some error message and doesn't boot can't find the rom? Do you need to change the rom path for playing on dvd-r? does it come set for hard drive only? Also I couldn't figure out how do get the pull down windows for the options like in the previous version? any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!!

Bring on the scanline modes.

A couple of days ago the WIP didn't want to start anymore on my XBox too, and I narrowed the cause down to the fact that I had deleted the default skins. It seems that the .ini had become somehow corrupted and since there was no standard skin, the program hung itself up during the start. After copying them back to the right folder the emu worked again like a charm.

P.S. A little suggestion: I don't know if it's technically possible, but I'd like to see .SPC-sound support for the menues, since then you could have original SNES-music playing and save a lot of HD-space compared to equally sounding MP3s.

yeah, SPC support would be great. long ago i tried to use that SPC to wav (or MP3) converter, but it just wouldn't do anything.

Some Great Features that would absolutely make this emu perfect is

1: Relax Support
2: Incorperate XPORTS Skinning Engine (Including Splash Screen)

Thanks

Sorry if this has already been answered, but what filters do I set in order to make this look like a real SNES on my TV? (It's not HDTV)

I'm glad you said it and not me, but you're absolutely right. Many of those little touches that make XPort's emulators perfect I fear will be forever absent from XSNES9X.

Of course it's lantus' emu and I guess it's up to him to decide what's essential and what's trivial...

Then again, some of us appreciate the ways in which the emulators are different. For one thing Xport's skinning engine, while quite nice, is also hardly an essential. xSNES9x's skins are simple but effective, and more than adequate. Additionally, I don't see why Relax support would be so important either. For Sega CD or PSX CD-ROMS I do, but SNES ROMS aren't exactly so big that you can't keep them on your hard disk.  And XSNES9X's menus are perfectly functional while retaining an elegant simplicity. Overall I'd say this emulator is damn near perfect as it is. Anything more is frosting on the cake.

yes they will be forever absent. Because the UI as it stands is fully functional.

and please "Perfect" ?. Perfect to me is running Star Ocean without graphics packs, fixing bugs in the core which make more Roms work as they should - not the addition of a splash screen and sprites.

The puzzling part of this is, Snes9x is open source and free for anyone to port as they desire. XPORT is more than welcome to port his own version - hell he might even be running his own private build for all i know - so unfortunatly your plea for an XPORT style UI will fall on deaf ears.

beerchug.gif this Emulator is absolutly FANTASTIC, i LOVE the mod, xm and s3m support, this is what the older version of your Emu had missing, it makes the whole thing feel more complete wink.gif and it makes a MASSIVE difference, them old style Amiga crack screens, i used to Love that music,

Hmmm now to find good ol' ProTracker that i can use on UAEx so i can compose my own tunes

all is good so far, im glad that R-Type 3 is now fixed and runs nice smile.gif

but i did find one slight bug/floor u might want to know about, if you dont already know about it:

Load a rom, then exit to menu and load that same rom again it seems to show the rom starting to load with the text and this text will just fade in and out,  although its strange its only sometimes it will do this. ?!

Other than that, this is absolutly FANTASTIC work, i also would like to see it not press a button when you go from the emu GUI(right thumb) back into the game it does sometimes get annoying, but saying that i can live with that, GREAT work as always, Keep it up.

PS. on a sidenote, just a thought, if and when FBAx gets an update i would v.much like to see mod, s3m and xm music support. smile.gif

Well, firstly, I like having my own background music for my romlist, pretty nifty. And also, the fade-away menu while in roms (with a snapshot next to the menu) is nice, as well. It makes the emulator look much better and cleaner, which is always good.

And, as always, very good emulation. Good job, Lantus.

However, it seems I've been having some sound problems with a few games. The only one I can remember at the moment is Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. On some of the attacks, the sound is dragged out for a bit and sounds kinda distorted. I don't remember this happening in previous versions.

Is this the emulator, or perhaps something else involved? (ie, the rom itself, or my audio settings)

Thanks.
