Title: So Killer Instinct Is No-go On Xbox?
Post by: djoye on August 05, 2003, 06:09:00 PM
I would so love to see Killer Instinct run full-speed on XBOX.  I'm running it on MAMEoX right now, it's gotta be running all of 3FPS.  Someone's gotta be able to hack up something to run it 30FPS.  Nintendo are a buncha bastards for only giving us the SNES port for a home version and I don't enjoy playing it on my computer monitor, heh.

Guess we're screwed on this one!  LATER!@#

Heh, the N64 version is no match for the real Arcade KI2
Seriously with my knowledge its possible to run it with a decent speed on an xbox. But that's just guessing, not
facts.

I don't know if anyone works on it, still its highly anticipated. And to all those who are now saying "we cannot load over 400MB into RAM dumbass"

Well KI2 used a HDD, so we don't need to load it into the ram.

I just hope someone will do it someday, even if the result would only be 30FPS it would be godlike to me.

If someone ported U64Emu, then you would get much better results. MAMEoX isn't going to cut it for KI or KI2, you need a real up-to-date machine to play either on in MAME on the PC even.

Yeah I dunno how u64emu/kiame manages to run KI so good while MAME is so slow.  Everyone just says that MAME is slow because code is accurate and usually unoptimized.  I'm gonna get the most current PC MAME and check it out, I thought I read something about optimazion in the Williams driver but I dunno if that has been released yet.

I had no idea that the u64emu source was available:
http://kiame.emuhq.com/downloads.shtml

And RAM has nothing to do with how fast KI runs on MAMEoX, the KI 1&2 ROMs are only 5MB.

huh.gif ... wrong , the actual KI and KI2 roms are huge [ as far as roms are concerned , I know KI2 is at least several hundred meg ] . Maybe you are looking at the Super Nintendo roms .

There are 2 parts: the rom and teh hd image. The rom which is loaded into ram is small, while the hd image, which is run from the hd is a couple hundred megs.

It bugged me how they said the n64 was going to have the same performance as the arcade hardware. That was such hype.

Ummm, the N64 hardware was in fact FAR MORE POWERFUL than the Midway hardware that Killer Instinct 1 and 2 ran on. The only limiting factor was the cartridge medium - in terms of raw specs there's no comparison - the R4300i processor developed by Silicon Graphics was only second to 3Dfx graphics chips in their 3D polygon pushing power at the time. The Midway hardware could have never handled something like Ocarina of Time or Super Mario 64 at 60 or even 30fps.

The reason why Killer Instinct Gold had worse graphics than KI2 was because of the cartridge medium - less memory space called for tighter compression, which meant losing tons of frames and cutscenes. Remember that KI Gold had to fit everything into a 64Mbit / 96Mbit cart (I'm not sure which of the two, I think 64Mbit). That's 8MB for a port of an arcade game that is well over a hundred megs big. I think I'm sure you could see Rare's dilemma at the time.

ROMs:
KI1 = 5MB
KI2 = 5MB
HD image (CHD):
KI1 = 93MB
KI2 = 136MB

The HD images don't need to be loaded into RAM so they're out of the picture.  MAME will just read the HD image from the XBOX HD during game play.

Since U64emu uses img format hard drive images the imges are much larger.

Doesn't matter, they'll still be read from the HD.  The larger KI HD images may actually be more efficient but I'm not sure.  I think the CHD files that MAME uses are compressed HD images so I assume if the uncompressed .IMG files are used that it may take a small load off the CPU since it won't have to decompress data real-time.
