Title: Gp32
Post by: dmb062082 on June 09, 2003, 12:11:00 AM
i know all about the system, 1 of the best ever i might add. Probaably one of the last handhelds to get exploited like this so imp everyone should own one. Good post but it dosnt really belong here. I know its emulation but it has nothing to do with the xbox. But i guess it can stay!

SNES emulation at the moment is incredibly slow and incompatible, and as for GBA emulation, it will NEVER happen with decent speed or compatibility.
The GBA uses it's own video and sound hardware, something which the GP32 lacks. And to emulate both of these chips it would require more than a 133mhz cpu to do it.

SnesEmu pretty much runs at full speed but without any sound.  Although it doesn't run some games, it's fine for most of them.  Only problem is that you can't save.  The other snes emulator (snes9x) has sound and save support, but runs very slowly.  I'm pretty sure that a decent upgrade will come out soon enough.

As for the GBA emulator, I don't think it's very easy or possible to get full speed and sound.  But there are some very talented gp32 programmers working on it, so here's hoping.

Xport - you want a new challenge?  biggrin.gif

Anyway, thanks for clearing up the other points.

actually the gba doesn't have any sound hardware at all  (other than the dac and the gbc-chip).
the gfx hardware isn't much more advanced than the snes counterpart.
the cpu is a problem however, since its a 16mhz cpu (and not 14 as someone said). if they have problem emulating the snes which runs at 3.something mhz, then 16 mhz will be alot more difficult. far from impossible though.

the big problem is the lack of memory. there are alot of 4mb gba roms, but there are alot more 8, 16 and 32mb roms.

Can a mod please move this to the other console systems folder, so that if someone wants to discuss it further they can.

Thanx.

Also, the six buttons include start and select, so really it has the same number of buttons as GBA.
So why would i pay more for a system that can play less games? emulators clearly are un-playable without sound except for ancient ones like atari, which you can run on a gba anyways. I'm sorry but this looks like a horrible system.

Depends on what you want.

I want to play DOTT on the move and watch the odd SP.

Guess I best throw that piece of shit GBA in the bin!

Underpowered SNES on the move, Nintendo what did you think you were doing!

Calling this a horrible system makes you look like a complete idiot.

As I said in my original post, there are loads of fully working emulators with hundreds of games on them - all working a full speed and with sound.  On top of that, you get mp3 and divx support.  The homebrew scene for this handheld is getting better by the day.  Even if some of the emulators haven't fully been optimized yet is no reason to call this a horrible system.  It's like saying the same thing about the xbox just coz the n64 emu isn't perfect yet.

I have one as well, and it's great! I can't wait for the FNES release. Playing most of the good old nintendo games at full speed, with sound, save states, and more on the go!

tHIS IS INFACT A HANDHELD emulation machine and it does a good job of emulating most older consoles even snes. YES, snes games play rather well and the emu will only be getting better. And dont pass up gba emulation lol, that is also possible, spec wise just compare the 2 handhelds.

To top it all of you can also use it as a mp3 player with the 120mb smart cards. There is also a way to use is as a portable movie player as there are ways to watch full length movies on the system. I dont care what anyone says this murders the GBA hands down and its one of the best systems out there, and it is a handheld go figure.

Downfall is that not many people own the damn thing outside of korea. Probably 5 thousand in the us if that. But yeah dont ever knock this fucking system if you have yet to use it, its simply fucking amazing and worth every penny.

Nice to see some GP32 owners here smile.gif

And for some people considering the system, try this review

If u encode a divx movie with 12 frames/sec and the sound 128kb/s u can get a whole movie on 128mb...

I don't knwo of any good programs to do so...

If you're looking for a good GP32 site go to GP32 Xtreme.

And let me make this clear, the full speed emulators with sound currently are:

Atari ST
Sega Master System
PC Engine
Game Gear
MSX 1 and 2
Commodore 64 (does have slight compatibility issues)

If they had used a better processor (StrongARM, XScale) I might have been interested.

As for people saying that because it can run an emulator, those games are included in its list of games, uh no.  Those titles weren't written for gp32; gp32 just emulates the systems.

I don't say the xbox has many games due to it being able to emulate nearly every system.

But I'm glad you guys enjoy it, someone has to.

smile.gif  There is even an ATARI ST emulator!  I've heard of Amiga being looked at, but I am very sceptical about this reaching a decent speed, but I'll wait until it's been looked at/worked on some more first.

DivX encoding is best done via the Moviepark software and though I've never used it myself, I'm told that it makes totally watchable full sized movies, even on a 128MB SMC..

The only thing that really sucks on this little system are the games native to it...  ahh well... it's still worth a thought if you have the money.

I know there are the following emus for the GBA: NES, ZX Spectrum, Atari 2600 (<-was coded, never found out where it went though) and Sega SMS. There was somebody working on a mini-mame, but that person gave up long ago.
GBA will soon have the ability to play DiVX and other video formats, as well as MP3s. Also, Doom, Doom 2, and Wolfentein 3D have been ported to the GBA already. Quake is very do-able on the GBA, but its not going to be released because ID doesn't want it to be ported to the GBA.

GP32 looks like a great system though.

I just wanted to say that the easiest way to play movies on the gp32 is to encode them yourself using VirtualDub.  It really isn't too difficult to do, and there are comprehensive guides available at all the gp32 sites.

Mage, why don't you include them?  I know the Xbox's mediocre-at-best games are still better than GP32, but Pikmin is more fun than every exclusive Xbox title I've ever played.  However, playing Metal Slug, Chrono Trigger, Donkey Kong Country and all those other games more than makes up for it

I've had a GBA since launch and a flash card since soon after.  I got my GP32 aobut 3 days ago, from play-asia.com (awesome service BTW, I love that you can use paypal) and it has been GREAT.  I know GBA has better native games, but GP32 has a better comprehensive library of games.  Whoever said the Snes emu is not very compatible doesn't know what they are talking about.  3/3 games worked for me, Chrono Trigger, FFIII and Earthbound.  All with sound and saves, but sadly too slow.  Also, "Atari" isn't a system.  GBA can play 2600 games, but 32 can play Atari ST games.  That is a huge difference.  32 can probly emulate GBA to a certain degree, because of the similarity of processors, much like Cxbx being able to play games full speed (in the future) with only a 2GHz machine.

I doubt that...
I think it can run xbox games in the future but i would say you need like 4Ghz to run xbgames...

I don't recommend anyone listening to CraiZE_, because the GP32 is the best handheld system ever.

"There is an addon coming out that will allow u to play vids you buy/download specificaly for the GBA. I don't think it'll work like the GP32, allowing you to play anything, or atleast work as well due to the slower processor of GBA "
Actually, this product (I am referring to the Pocket Pix) allows MP3 playing. It also gives you plus a codec to transcode other media formats, and play it on your GBA. You load the data onto an SD card, whichcan get upto 1GIG!: http://www.sandisk.c...sd512mb_1gb.htm
Not exactly like the GP32, but close enough.

I don't see why it matters, but yes; I bought a GBA on its launch day, because I knew the potential it had. Also, realize that it's a handheld therefore, the screen will be small to fit the unit.
kram has listed some examples where you can use a handheld/portable music player. It's portable for one simple, logical reason: to take it with you. I don't find it necessary to broaden that, because I know you get the jist of that concept.
And you are correct, you can download GBA games for free. But, how portable is your desktop with the emulator on it? How portable is your XBOX with a GBA emu on it? Do happen to have a generator, and TV/monitor to carry with you to make them "portable," and take them with you on the go? How long would the batteries last on your laptop to play GBA games on the go? Could you carry any of those three (PC/laptop/XBOX) in your pocket easily? Should I bother to write these rhetorical questions anymore?
