scoobster I have made a new version no gui yet but it does something you asked for :
XRename Version 2.2
Well I wrote this utility to rename files with long filenames (more than 32 chars) or that had a ',' a '+' or a '-' cause we all know that files with names like that can't be sent to your xbox right? I mean I wasn't going to check all my 2000 mp3's for those special chars and rename them one by one.
Version 2.1 - Now supports up to 3000 files in same dir, seems 1000 wasn't enough, thanks to scoobster. And deletes undo.bat after it'S run once.
Version 2.2 - Instead of replacing bad caracters with spaces it deletes them ie: imadothisonpurpose+++.mp3 becomes imadothisonpurpose.mp3 instead of imadothisonpurpose(3 spaces).mp3
there ya go + have a link now, doh it's in geocities so I don't know....
I think I have a problem as soon as someone tell me something is wrong I feel the urge to fix it. Maybe I'm too compulsive.

this tool is beginning to take form.. but there is one fatal flaw (especially for us who are renaming roms from goodxxx programs)
example:
Donkey Kong Country - Version 1.1 (US).zip Donkey Kong Country - Version 1.1 (E).zip
the program will rename the first one correctly, then ignore the second because it would generate 2 files with the same name.. can you make it look for the "(countrycode)"-string and keep it in the end of a file? wich would result in no duplicates.
example: Donkey Kong - Donkey Kong Country - Ver(US).zip Donkey Kong - Donkey Kong Country - Ver(E).zip

ahh! almost perfection! just a little thingy to fix now. there are still roms with same name AND countrycode *sigh* when they are renamed to 42chars resulting in files not beeing renamed hence the dupes. it would be easy just to add 1,2,3,4 and so on, after the roms wich are not beeing renamed (wasn't many in my 3000+ collection but anyways.. hehe). and btw, jsm you rock =))

Hey jsm,
just a little observation i made the other day regarding that problem with the folders being inaccessible. I still havent gotten around to that reformat, but after a minor virus problem, i had to run norton. I observed that the scan was able to read all of the rom files in my folders that "don't exist." It even had your undo.bat, so I at least know that part worked... lol. Anyway, just found it odd that norton antivirus was able to still scan those files so i thought i would pass the info on to you.

Hi,
Im noticed that the Good Tool renames the files, and can give very long names to roms. I tried to ftp the rom names to the xbox, but the very long names aren't uploaded at all. Is there a way to preserve the long names and upload them correctly? I use Flashfxp.

nope no way...
I've made a program tough that prepares filenames for xbox-format names, I didn't want to rename all my roms and mp3s manually, I have thousand of them....

What exactly is the xbox file naming standard? It appears that commas aren't allowed along with a file name of a certain length. If someone knows the exact specs for naming please post them. I'd like to write my own program, I need the practice

Here :
XRename Version 2.0
Well I wrote this utility to rename files with long filenames (more than 32 chars) or that had a ',' a '+' or a '-' cause we all know that files with names like that can't be sent to your xbox right? I mean I wasn't going to check all my 2000 mp3's for those special chars and rename them one by one.
Version 1.0 - Replaces ',' '+' and '-' with a space and cuts file names to 32 chars but keeps extension. Creates a Undo.bat just run it to get old file names back.
Version 2.0 - Same as above, alot of code was redone, plus alot of bugs fixed : would run on nt and xp only, would fuck up with filenames that had two or more '.', would just delete undo if run twice.
