Sounds like you are trying to use the European version of the Rom.

Either get the USA version, or upgrade to the latest version of xSnes.

Beta 5 has changed a bit so that you can easily load European (PAL) roms in addition to US/Jap roms, but I have encountered speed issues with beta 5 in which these roms run too quickly.  With beta 4, look at the .ini file.  There is an option which called force NTSC, or something like that.  Set this value to 1.  This will fix the problem.

I can't get Yoshi's island to run in beta 5 either... actually I can't get yoshi's island to run in the PC version of Snes9X and I've tried a couple of different versions of the rom.

Something may be wrong with the rom you have.

I just tried "Yoshi's Island 1.1 (e).smc" on a NTSC Xbox using xsnes 5, and it works fine.

I haven't tried the other roms (u), (j) (u!) and the 1.0 ones since the 1.1 (e) worked.

You're right, thanks for your help.  And GoodSNES is a blessing.  If a rom doesn't pass it, don't use it.  And always make sure it works on the PC or other version of SNES9X before loading it on the x-box... and you might want to make sure you get "Checksum OK" too.
