Been asked for before, but as you can see I doubt many kernel hackers really care to write such a hack.
A few things also, you'd have to know the state of the gpu/other subsystems to return them to their proper state, which as far as I know isn't very documented yet. Among other things.
It's yet another one of those "It'd be useful to have, but the work required makes it not as useful anymore" things.
