Has this mod been proven yet?  I checked the site yeserday, and it doesn't give a whole lot of info.

not sure if it has or it hasnt, that why I posted it to see if any others have more information on it.  web site indicates it works, pics show its real however they are just external pics not internal.  so maybe it could be bs.

who knows

wink.gif is crap , why would you want 1.4ghz on a Gaming console that was made for 700mhz CPU.

tongue.gif They wont have any sales cause XBox Next is almost out and will have more than 1.4ghz  rolleyes.gif

who knows what it can really do, now what they should do when selling it it should have the upgradded ram as well.  then this machine will be worth a look.

even though not much support it.

it would be a start

Well, I don't see that it would be that difficult it you had the equipment to desolder the old processor and slap an SMT socket on the board... Perhaps an occilator (sp?) change to switch the bus speed.

The chipset should be able to handle it, and with the CPU soldered to the MB I can't imagine any other checks being put into place....

But I guess we'll just have to wait for someone to buy one and disect it.

This is pointless.

They're 2 angles I could see this from

1. They made a clone (there were quite a few clones in the early days of consoles but I think this is very unlikely

2. They're buying original xbox's and ripping them apart

bad bad business model, add amazing ammount of hassle to change processor and cost of new case, extra hardware. This just so obviously isn't a goer, the best they can hope for is obscurity.

Xbox next is still a couple of years away yet give the xbox time to live 1st.

yeah it does sound like BS to me as well, and i Agree why the hell would someone go through all the trouple to add a 1.4 process and not add additional ram.

that would have made more sense, but then again who am I

Well as mentioned before, what diff does it make?  Xbox software is designed to run perfectly on a 700Mhz.  So, unless you're writing a homebrew rip-off version of Maya, SETI signal analyzers, or software to predict Earthquakes, it won't make any difference.

Cool that the mod worked, but it's impractical, so i doubt anyone would sell it (unless, of course, people are dumb enough to buy it).

Double the CPU power is a HUGE plus in the emulation scene, which is my first and foremost concern of my xbox.

Quite frankly i couldnt give a shit about xbox games. I dont play them. Im much more into console emulation, and 1.4 ghz over 700mhz spells sweet stuff to me.

There are alot of things that can take advantage of this upgrade, including emulators, linux (and emulation in linux, such as wine..gaming, and lots of other stuff)

So its hardly a matter of stupidity to buy it. Its a great technical feat.

Regarding emulation... 733MHz isn't too bad. Linux can run natively. And if you plan to emulate something that requires 1.4GHz then I can almost guarantee that the measily 64MBs RAM will stop you first (e.g., Mortal Kombat in MAME).

Upping the processor speed to 1.4 entails a couple things: One, that is likely a P4 (probably a Willamete or an early 0.13um Northwood). Xbox wasn't created to work with the P4 socket or power supply. Xbox was designed with a Celeron P3 in mind. Even the faster P3's (Tualatin's 1.2's) use a slightly different socket. Second, is the Xbox chipset/bus compatible with P4? Possibly, but not guaranteed. The IO speed should be sufficient since xbox rarely saturates the IO. Not too mention there's not a whole lot of disk access during game-play other than load times.

Kinda B.S... the comparison on the above website.

They claim that the standard Xbox only supports standard stereo audio and no s-video.  Period. Umm... whatever.  To at least give an objective comparison, mention the capabilities, but also the additional purchase of the adv. a/v pack.

I've translated some from the news:
1,Friendtech have already showed this 1.4g modded xbox(called xbx2) at Computex Taipei 2003 in 9.22,there place is in the 2nd hall,F331.
2,It's 499 dollar.
3,Friendtech buys xboxs from retailer shops now.
4,Friendtech shows some normal xboxs and modded xboxs in the Computex for test, the visiters can play and compair the same xbox game, games on xbx2 boot, load, run much faster(The test game is The lord of the ring). Just like a 286 game runs on a 386 pc.
5,Game runs faster even use xbconnect but other players are still normal speed.(shit cheater!!)
6,If you have already had a xbox, you can send it to Friendtech, they can upgrade it for you.
7,In the US,xbx2 will be realesed by a Friendtech's co-opration company called Powerleap.

Here is some pictures from Taiwan forum(may be xbx2):

Don't worry, it's real.  My business partner was at computex in taipei, and made a stop by their booth.  It's no joke; but he wasn't all that impressed at the practicality of the whole thing.

Although, they were just running standard Xbox games, which of course isn't going to display any real differences.

guys I had a broken mobo laying around so I extracted the cpu and I'm looking at the connection points. (Of course we all know it's attached by solder balls.) I am also looking at the way the pins are arranged on the tualatins you are speaking of. They do not even compare. They are so different. I'm not saying it's impossible but what I AM saying is that the impracticality of all this makes it just seem rediculous to do this. You'd have to solder wires to all the pins or create your own socket. I may post pictures if someone pms me and tells me this thread would like them. I probably won't check this thread again so if anyone is interested pm me.

Even the faster P3's (Tualatin's 1.2's) use a slightly different socket.
A company called powerleap has made Socket370 -> Tualatin adapters for years allowing Tualatin processors to work in standard P3 boards. They are using this off the shelf PowerLeap PL370T adapter.

well ok... but I'm really trying to say that it's neither of those two sockets... so that adapter is useless.

umm. guys, they are BOTH the celly-t and late p3's are socket 370's. the only difference is the operating voltage - which is what the adaptor is probably used for.

trust me on this, i use to have a 1.2ghz celeron tulatin running on a socket 370 board without an adaptor.

as for the xbox cpu - we know its not true p3, so the socket could well be different aswell.
