ok ... so at present what is actually possible (althou, the scene moves so fast it probably wont be the same in a months time!)

ok as i see it (reading most of the posts)
u can add a new tab/section at the main starting screen,  and or delete them
add/delete sublevels to these these
add/move/delete items in the selections sceen

so basiclly everything ..
BUT make it so it automaticly add items if a defualt.xbe/folder is present ..
(at present can only do this from the memeory tab AND ONLY IF there is an exsisting save state for it)

is that just about it so far ??
if so ... if this last step could be added/figured out
we basicly have EVERYTHING that evox etc can do (just with out FTP) which would be fine for everyday use .. .

Question to Voltaic

How hard would it be to make an xbox .xbe to just use a .ini file to set stuff to a config.xap then add/replace it and resign the xboxdash.xbe from the xbox itself?

If that could be accomplished then we could put like an update button on the dash and then have a auto add function.

I was thinking about this yesterday, reading the posts about this. It seems that, once a solid and functional method is developed to do all these things, it would be pretty straightforward to do something like this.

Build an xbe with the functions of pixit built, which you provide a .ini (possibly even an evox.ini) for, and it will go through and parse the directories you tell it to looking for .xbe files, and build the menu using the original unmodified one as a template.

Then you just make sure that one of the buttons you add to the settings menu points to the menu-builder xbe, and you have almost all the functionality of evox, plus the msdash eyecandy.

Now a question:

from my own looking at the scripts, it appears to be possible to change the color and position of just about everything. Am I wrong? (Particularly about the color?) It would be sweet to have it in blue or red or any other color.

I just used Winxap to mod my dash. Everything work fine but I have no setting menu any more. There is no where to adjust the time or video display and things like that. Is there a fix for this? I had 4 menus originally including XBOX Live. Now I have 4 but with the Launcher menu replaced my settings menu. It didnt add a 5 menu for the Launcher. It replaced my Settings menu with the Launcher menu.

if you want to modify your dash, but have no idea what you're doing and just simply following a tutorial, well.. i have no words...

if you really don't know what you're doing at this stage, wait until a GUI / some other means is established to easily configure your menu.... then again, i always see 200000 posts on evox.ini troubles in that forum...

Umm,,.. Winxap is a GUI. Thats what I was using and what my question concerned. Read more carefully before you respond.

BTW, this is about the MS Dash not Evox.

DMagic1, That is how winxap works, it changes your settings menu. If you want to edit your dash, without replacing the settings menu, you will have to follow one of the text tutorials that are out there.

oh sorry i don't know what i would've done without you telling me that  dry.gif if you couldn't tell, i was trying to say that the amount of people posting troubles with xap editing will soon become as bad as those who posted errors with their evox.ini's....

what i mean, is that people use winXAP but don't fully know what they're actually doing and then they complain, 'oh where's the xbox live / settings / memory tab gone now??' and seeing as the custom dash is still a WIP, i'd suggest people steer away from it until we can all get it easily customizable. if you wish to make the changes now, well good for you, but first read readme's that are supplied with winXAP etc.

And it worked.
Thanx for the fast reply and the good work. 1 other thing i noticed. The Save Game Manager from the Settings menu isn't working. But i have it in the root, so i don't bother. But i mentioned it wink.gif

Now i finnaly have my dashboard as i want it. Only the FTP support would be nice. But that would be only a matter of time. (and maybe Background music play (mp3 and not wav))

Greetz to all the dudez who made this possible, now i'm going to sleep

is the chance of having a game menu along with pics getting slim?  Hopefully we will have ftp in the bios soon so we wont need that in the dash IF its possible.  After that it will be pretty much complete i think.

dlux using the method you used to search for games, isnt that close to have an autosearch? The code for getting XBE titles must already be available in memory3.xap, and with your code for finding XBEs it could be workable.

memory3.xap doesn't do any searching itself, that stuff is all done by the xboxdash.xbe. The only way that I can think of to get a menu that autoloads, is to code every instance of every program into a function, and use "ntfileexists" to figure out whether or not the programs are on the xbox or not.

this would obviously be alot more code, but it would mean that the average user who downloads the tutorial could just place the code where they are told to, and not have to worry about editing it for their xbox.

If anyone wants to take the time to make this list, go for it.

if someone does decide to do this, and they want to make it eisier to use, they should split it into four different functions (dashboards, applications, emulators, games)

1.  Start with a fresh clean unedited set of xip/xbe files.
2.  Save the xip after you add/replace all the xaps to that certain xip.
3.  Go To File Resign Dashboard.
4.  Browse for you xboxdash.xbe file
5.  Using the BROWSE button at the very bottom to select the folder that "ALL" your xips are in to resign.
6.  Start back at 1 on each xip you edit.

Hope that helps a little.

The Browse button was the key. I was using the Add button.
I guess the add button, selecting the files, doesnt work the same as the browse button and selecting the folder.

My xap editor is ready to be tested as soon as I write instructions on how it works.

This is basicly a text editor created from scratch that is taylored to the xap format.
it lists all def in tree form with children below it
lists all functions
lists all variables
lists all text for output(menu text)
does some checks for correctness
all def, functions, var are all highlighted in text
editor goes right to selected def, function, or var when dbl clicked
search, search and replace, search and replace all works
and some other small features(all text and background colors are changeable)

It was written for windowsXP but I tried to use win9x code for compatibility.

This is a windows GUI program, BUT does not edit xap files automaticly!!

works with winxip when set up as defualt editor.

Need testers to try it out!

only serious apply!

CODE
g_bXOnDashExists = theConfig.NtFileExists( "\\Device\\Harddisk0\\partition2\\xodash\\xonlinedash.xbe" );

and replace it with:
CODE
g_bXOnDashExists = true;

then rebuild, and resign, and load the dash, I believe that this should make the xbox live button appear on the dash, even though you haven't updated.
I don't have a non-updated dash, so I can't try this myself, but, hopefully it works.

Just had a thought, and wondered if one of you guys that doesn't have a live updated dashboard would like to try it out.
If so, give it a shot, and see if it works.

open default.xap inside default.xip, and find :
CODE
g_bXOnDashExists = theConfig.NtFileExists( "\Device\Harddisk0\partition2\xodash\xonlinedash.xbe" );

and replace it with:
CODE
g_bXOnDashExists = true;

then rebuild, and resign, and load the dash, I believe that this should make the xbox live button appear on the dash, even though you haven't updated.
I don't have a non-updated dash, so I can't try this myself, but, hopefully it works.

it wont work.
reason being is because that code is from the LIVE default.xip and its not in the normal one.

i've noticed that after a while of sitting on the MSdash i hear a blip in the ambient sounds. its seems to be random, eg sometimes its 5mins, sometimes 20mins.
its similar to the blip you get at the begining of some crappy encoded mp3s, you know the one?

i've tried replacing the audio files from my orignal backup but it still does it, any ideas?
could i have messed up a xip/xap?

wink.gif but if i decide to change the background etc, i'll feel as if i'm back with evox (evox gui = yuck).

The Axledental DJ -> there is code to bypass DVD warnings already, but no dongle-free code as of yet. As for requesting diff. backgrounds to be made for you, the chances of that happening are slim to none. I think Gcue's got better things to do then complete requests.

well hopefully we will have a gui that will adjust colors like nexgen had.  That would be great.  As far as Voltaic coding in the dash, does anyone know what that means as far as features?  I got to tell you that this is the biggest development to come to fruition in a long time.  Ftp, gamesave pics for games like nexgen, and an adjustable timer would own all other dashboards i think.

PLEASE HELP!

I used the Gcue config method and have the dash running perfectly...with two versions on the c drive... one original and one hacked...

I moved the evoxdash to e, which works fine...the only problem is that when i try to ftp through evox the DVD - D drive is not looking in the right place and defaults to the folder with the evox dash in....and i cant change it through ftp??

Is there a problem with what im doing or just a simple error?

Either way all dashboards work independantly apart from i cant ftp from evox DVD drive anymore??

Would appreciate any help

you need to apply the xbx files included in the package into your xip files for the complete conversion. Otherwise the xboxlogo will be green, and the hilite.

just confirmed that any changes made through any MS dash (original or hacked) will carry the changes over to the all your MS dashes (someone was asking this before).

the great thing about hacking up the MS dash is that most of the work has been done for us and it's already got nice features (in built dvd player, remote capabilities, audio player, memory manager, soundtrack manager and settings can be changed). we just need to get it a little further and it's a complete package with FTP support and auto listing. it's even "skinnable" altho it's not so easy at this stage.
