Welp, most of you are obviously confused by now, or just dont care (im sure females will love this game as my sister did)

Sooo...i drew up this concept art of the game, its basically tetris, instead of blocks you place 'food' and animal heads, what you do is match the animal head with the food, and the animal head comes alive and starts eating the food (clears the line basically altho it doesnt have to be a line)...

heres a pic of it in concept roughly ms paint concept of it

it sure looks like crap there, but the game should be nice and colourful, and fun as hell if i do it properly (the original was pretty cool)...anyways, we'll see how it goes...

Hopefully the mass will now understand the concept of Baku Baku

Forgot to explain the pic, anyway, as you can imagine the green would be Bamboo, you would try get a group of Bamboo, and then put a Panda bear block on it (the panda comes alive and eats it! amazing!)

You also have bananas (monkey eats), carrots (bunny rabbit) and bones (dog eats).... see...its really easy and girls/kids will probably like it, and im sure 2-4 player would be awesome.

Oh BTW : for legal reasons this will be "for PC" and opensource, rumor has it, a friend of a friend of a friend of a friend said he was going to alter the code to play on Xbox wink.gif rolleyes.gif *doesnt need to get in trouble right now*

Welp, the past 2 weeks have been crazy, the net has been off, nvidea bugged me to join some conference thing (err...yay), so if you thought i had bailed on the projects you were wrong...if anyone is even interested in the games anyway.

oh well.

ive pretty much run over everything on this game programming wise, will test it out and debug over next few days, then ship it off to wishi for tryout. wink.gif

How far along are you? I can't wait to try it out for my PC!
Is everything going to be animated? This makes me think of super bubble pop. Is it going to be something like that?

Looking foward to this smile.gif

BTW, Have you finished Shizno Fighter?

Nope, due to the relative ease of this project i decided to finish this first, then work on 'shizno fighter', which will hopefully get a new name in the near future.......any suggestions?

_OKAY_

Well, after a lot of delays (motivational problems, am i the only one who can never be bothered sitting down to work?) this game is back on track...

heres my update:

Okay: there was a major fuckup with the animals eating (due to poor planning (ofcourse) ph34r.gif ) So anyway, I decided to [delete] the entire code, and start again from scratch.

So heres where im at:
Main engine is practically finished....blocks fall, animals eat, blank holes are filled (drop)..blocks/animals/board will ALL be 2D now (why use 3d for this game anyway?)...controls are done.

Heres what i have to finish:
Menu
Scores
Finish animal eat animation
wait for wife to finish drawing the final animals..
---

Oh, and Ill take a screenshot (ingame) of it tonight, to give you a first look at the game... its shaping up nicely, and im working on it like a steam train now!

I _SWEAR TO GOD_ I will have it finished and released() ASAP... Im think next week, but i dont want to make something certain then find out somethings fucked up again...

Sorry for delay for anyone waiting for this game..im trying to make it worth your while (images will be open format: you'll be able to draw your own silly animals/food if you please)

WISHI YOU WILL GET YOUR COPY FIRST! wink.gif

man I loved this game on the saturn, it one of the better puzzle games that's for sure.
make sure there's cool SFX and cheezy music smile.gif

the saturn version had 3d heads and it looked really cool, can't wait to see what your version looks like!

Screenshot time!

Okay, so heres a few in game rendered on xbox screenshots

NOTE: the backgrounds havent been drawn (aligned) to the blocks properly yet (the backgrounds will be Baku Baku type jungle backgrounds with score etc)..

The actual blocks are being worked on still, some images are still UGLY and the lady is drawing them as i type and improving all the time so...yeha...final blocks should look nice..
ANYWAY, you will be able to make your own, or revert to ORIGINAL baku baku blocks.

PS: player 2 is all skulls because it means player 2 is game over wink.gif my own little death touch.

anyway, the pictures are JPG, geocities wont let me link JPG so click the links and if it wont show in IE just download them and swap them to JPG extension

Screenshot 1 monkey eating

Screenshot 2 Bunny eating

should be complete soon as you can see (backgrounds/score is all to do! and finish sound/AI i suppose but still! soon soon SOON!)  beerchug.gif  pop.gif  rotfl.gif  jester.gif

hey those pics look pretty good so far, the animals look pretty cool... are they animated smoothly?

I noticed there's a lot of animal blocks too, the majority (maybe 80%) are food blocks in the other versions... i'm guessing you know this and will worry about that stuff later.

it's great to see homebrew stuff like this, the xbox scene (yeah I know this is for PC) is pretty big now but there just isn't a lot of cool homebrew games... some good stuff for dreamcast.

Been a long day working on this:

update:

Added CPU AI...watched the AI play itself and have one big rumble...

Added eat animation...

Added 'next' blocks (see next 5 upcoming blocks)

annnnnd added the score boxes (the score doesnt show up on screen capture tho)

Oh, added attack too (when animal eats 3+ food it 'attacks' the other player (dropping random blocks depending on ammount of food eaten)...

Ive decided to add a small particle engine that will release pixie dust from the flying animal heads...will add that tomorrow..

As for ratios, i think ill be adding everything customisable : eg choose food:animal ratio, change animal eat speed, default drop speed, computer AI speed etc...

I just want to try my hardest, im not the best programmer out there... im trying to make it as much like the authentic baku baku was (but i ONLY have the SMS version so bleh)...and i want to try make it as customisable as possible...

For example: I had the idea of a 'halloween' theme, where it was vampires and necks and the particle engine dropped 'blood' instead of 'pixie dust'.... dont want to get too far ahead of myself tho...

Oh, today i finally got the 'eat' function to be pretty good, it still screws up SOMETIMES (doesnt eat a block) but 99% of the time its great...definately playable..

heres some screenshots for you guys tho:

http://www.geocities...ud/baku1928.txt
http://www.geocities...ud/baku2928.txt

http://www.geocities...ud/baku3928.txt
if anyone wants me to add something, or wants to remindme of what made BB great, then tell me because i want to make this game fun, and not do a half ass job on it (it was such a good game)

Don't be a retard. For one thing, I suspect more kids play shooting games than puzzle games. Just because you think it's for kids, it doesn't mean it is.

i have it (thats where i got the sounds from, they were wav files)but it wont run on windows xp, i get it to run but it changes the resolution to tiny (everything looks huge), and the window shows up but everything in it looks scrambled (lines)....its pretty fucked...i guess you need win95 or some shit...

PS: i worked on the particle engine, it looks pretty good (now when you eat 3+ food the animal comes out and has particles (pixie dust?) trailing him...

Oh, added so the heads face which way they move...

Implemented a bit of sound (will be redone for music tho, since the beat needs to pick up when your almost dead)

put in a menu(code), intro screen (SEGA logo only says SHiZNO...lol...i wish someone could draw me up a really cool SHiZNO intro...

put in the lion eating the gameboard when you die...not bad i guess...

this game is basically finished....all i have to do is work in the music engine (so the music stops playing, and plays other things)...custom sound tracks etc...

i dont know what to do about single player...i cant be bothered putting in baku bakus 'story' (it was pretty stupid)...and 2 player is where the game is 'fun' anyway, maybe ill just make it so single player is never ending, gets harder...and maybe have a high score list...??

i guess ill pop into your IRC channel wishi, and DCC you the latest build so you can see what you think, and what could improve on...i think its pretty much as good as itll get...im pretty eager to finish the game and start working on shizno fighter or a new game...so...yeah...ill pop in and see if your online during the next few days....
Title: Baku Baku Animals
Post by: jizzlobber on September 30, 2003, 10:23:00 PM
yeah you should just make the single player game a high score challenge... maybe make the blocks drop faster every so often.

would you consider adding a fancy skin to make things a little more interesting/colourful?
I'd be happy to give it a bash if you like!?

Sure...here it is..
http://www.geocities.../enterscore.txt
is the main background for when entering score...
the top box is where the name is entered
middle big box is the icon
bottom box is score

http://www.geocities...goud/scores.txt

is the same thing, except displayed when looking at the score...not when entering the score itself

http://www.geocities...goud/goexit.txt
is displayed next to the icon in that big blank space... RGB(255,0,255) (PINK) is the alpha colour (transparent)

http://www.geocities...goud/goicon.txt is displayed when you are selecting the icon to use

http://www.geocities...goud/goname.txt is displayed when entering name

im pretty sure thats how itll remain...if you have a better idea, draw up anything and i can accomodate to whatever template (as long as it has big enough spaces to insert the text .. (its as tall as those boxes!)

do you think it would be a good idea to simply give stick a picture in the background?
maybe a tropical theme or something just to make it a little more interesting.

I just knocked something up, it's very dodgy but I think I could make something cool with a bit more time (it's 2am here in australia).
anyway this is just to show what a background can add to your current template.

would tropical hi-score screens look out of place? this one is made up from a photo but I could easily draw something up to give it that cartooney look.

ill try put important comments/explain shit in the main parts tho...(of the source)

ummm...oh yeah wishi i used your input class, the green button was set to Red tho, but i fixed that easily (that class is very nice btw)...im temporarily using your sound class too, but ill have to end up ditching that as i need to play CS's and change music alot (stages, and when tyou almost die the music needs to stop and play the upbeat tempo...not sure how ill do this AND use CS tho (ill just only use upbeat when not running CS's i guess)...still havent really decided much on the sound shit tho..ill be working on that tomorrow i guess...

so umm...yeah...ill see what gets done tomorrow, if things look good i guess whoever wants to test can help test for various shit...then you can tell me what should be added/changed...then release the source to the public and everyone can edip/rip whatever they want..

im going to sleep() now wink.gif

Title: Baku Baku Animals
Post by: SHiZNO on October 07, 2003, 05:40:00 PM
yeah, well ive been having some slight problems with the new falling code (when it falls slowly, not a block at a time).. im gona try work thru that tonight, if i  cant get it to work like it was, ill revert back to the block at a time (its not SERIOUS, its just i shouldve planne dbetter from the ground up)..

i also made a slight change to the dump code, where it dumps blocks on the other player...its working pretty good now...

i just want to get this game 'working' fine, so i can give out the source of this version, let people fuck with it, and move onto bigger things...i really learned to plan everything  from this, its not bad tho for my first so..

as for whats next, ill probably end up on the fighter game, but as for Baku Baku ill almost definately work on a part 2, that will be everything i planned for this game, and more...i just really wana get this off my chest...

soo...yeah...im gona tidy some stuff up, and just dump out everything i have THIS friday (unless something horrible happens)...if its not 'good enough'' on friday, ill give out 'alpha' build ill call it, and spend the weekend working on what needs to be done to make it 'good enough'...

right now its completely playable, its definately better than the SMS version, altho im not sure about the Arcade/saturn version as i have nothing to compare to (and dont know how it 'played' on those....BUT, anyone is free to touch up the code and improve...

as for customisation, i think itll only be as good as 'editing' the placeholders this time, instead of making skins to switch thru (unless someone wants to add that (probably an hour job maybe?)...altho everything is 'open' and bitmap format, so you can customise everything... (hell, open source is about as customisable as you can get, but not so user friendly)...

anywya, i think we can all just think of this as the prologue to 'Baku Baku 2'...which will be planned better, and will include everything i aimed for with this one.
Title: Baku Baku Animals
Post by: SHiZNO on October 07, 2003, 05:43:00 PM
PS: dont get that post wrong, this isnt a 'why the game sucks speach'...the game itself plays pretty good, and when i get the better menu graphics everything will shape up to be good... the ONLY thing im worried about, is if i am bias since i programmed the game, but im confident others will enjoy the 2 player side of the game....but im not sure if this type of game is for everybody..
Title: Baku Baku Animals
Post by: jizzlobber on October 07, 2003, 08:49:00 PM
can't wait to give it a bash mate, but you should get it right before releasing it.
so you don't need any backgrounds done?
Title: Baku Baku Animals
Post by: SHiZNO on October 07, 2003, 09:52:00 PM
actually, sure, backgrounds would be nice...ill upload a template in a sec for you to fiddle with...

after a bit of tinkering, ive decided reverting back to falling one square at a time will have to do for now, since i want to get some form out this friday, reverting now will allow me to fix other things (like maybe adding a 'real' AI, instad of the traditional left, center, right baku baku AI ...)

its not that falling a square at a time was 'bad', its just it seemed smoother slowly falling, but its nothing special ATM, when all is ssaid and done, i can go back and release updates, or anyone of you can easily hack some new routines(youll NEED to HACK away the code (with a long knife), its horrible lol!)
Title: Baku Baku Animals
Post by: SHiZNO on October 08, 2003, 01:53:00 PM
no, one player will only consist of playing until you die and beat the 'champion' (high score)...

however, source code will be there and anyone could add their own mods for it. (story/online etc)

im not worried about that ATM...

right now everything 'fits' for my tv ( on other homebrew apps i always have to resize shit)...

anyway, if you want to add support for whatever resolution or what-not go ahead.

I just added custom sound tracks today, i decided to scrap the original music (for this release _atleast_) due to file sizes and just because it was getting annoying...

to flip thru tracks ingame white button goes prev track black next track (loads every custom soundtrack on xbox and makes one long playlist)...kind of like DOAX i guess
Title: Baku Baku Animals
Post by: SHiZNO on October 09, 2003, 04:18:00 PM
oh, i also decided every background texture will be resized to .5 their attribs, for filesize (~200kb instead of ~1mb)... so i can hold however many backgroudns i end up with in memory, itd always starve the sound buffer when loading the next level ingame, so everything runs smoother this way, no loading at all etc.

Okay, its friday and the game is in pretty complete working order (added options menu, pause menu shit)

So now, all i do is wait for ~10 backgrounds ill post the template for it, anyone can make their own, i suck at graphics so its up to the elites out there now.

Wishi im going to try find you tomorrow in IRC and send you the game, you tell me what needs changing, ill try change it....then public release...

here is the template for you graphics artists
note: itll have to be in BMP format, and WILL be sketch/skewed by 50/50 (ms paint)...however if a background is really awesome and the half sizing screws it, i guess it wont matter and can stay that size...

http://www.geocities.../background.txt
Title: Baku Baku Animals
Post by: SHiZNO on October 11, 2003, 12:30:00 AM
I cant stress this enough, i ONLY have the SMS version (and havent even played the Arcade version for half a decade), so i can only 'guess' what is in the arcade version from the screenshots (only about 5!)...so what i do is assume they have particles of blocks (and i add on them, eg panda blocks are green, so the block particle mess is green, kind of nice i guess)...

the game was actually for my -sister- to start with (she loved that game and it was kind of a 'hey look what i can do' project  but i decided why not share the wealth with the world? the down side of this was id have to add a bunch of 'user friendly' menus...high score, etc...

the menus are in, and they work decently, but they sure as hell arent going to win any awards...

making sure it works on everyones tv/console is beyond me, hell...im not even sure it wont crash if you have no custom soundtracks! lol...(im not about to erase all my CST data)...

...which is one of the main reasons this is open source....obviously every area is going to have room for improvement, and until i can sit down, plan every detail and work on what was wrong with this game and build on the good things, everyone who wants it will just have to contribute to the source code (theres a lot of potential for fixes)

if you are wondering what im talking about, its the 'small' things i just couldnt get in on time, like 'selecting' what songs to play and what not to (itll play ALL songs on the HDD, tho you can easily FF and RW them)...

anyway: as soon as i get a few backgrounds in, and i find wishi, this will all be public... i guess the place to post 'bugs' or what could be done 'better' will be this forum....if you are a programmer you could PM me code, if you arent you could just say what you want done and ill (or someone else!) will see about implementing it...
(preferably someone else, i want to give a RTS (DUNE/C&C clone) a try (altho ill still have a bit of time for maintaining baku baku. and eventually undertaking BB2)

anyway, the game is pretty good i think, its not a HALO or even a $50 game (but i have seen Breakout clones for $10)...the games obviously free, will need everyone out there to contribute their own magic, and no doubt will be as good, and eventually exceed the original Baku Baku--

shizno... I can make some backgrounds tonight mate, i'll link you later and see what you think, add them if you like them.

640 x 480 bitmaps right?

youll have to use that template (so you know where the blocks/scores/next blocks are...)

here is an example my wife did on what you should do (the score/next block needs to be black so you can see easily)

http://www.geocities.../bgpawsblue.txt

feel free to do whatever (you might not want to keep the 'outlining on the score, or have all the blocks outlined etc)...whats important is to note where the things will be

heres another example that i made
http://www.geocities...shizno/shiz.txt

just remember to use the template below!

Hey SHiZNO, hows your project coming along ??

you may or may not know that i have been doing MSDash modding recently ?

i have a little idea for you hows this sound?

ok well as i have been working with xbx files, i can say images Look MUCH MUCH sharper than bmp and jpg, ALSO they are MUCH MUCH smaller in size, hows 256k for a 1024 x 512 image  ??

anyways a little something for you to think about.

also how can i use this as a template to make a background for you ?? its in .txt file format, i convert it and it wont display
Title: Baku Baku Animals
Post by: jizzlobber on October 13, 2003, 06:02:00 AM
don't convert mate... just click the link!

BG, if you have time you should make up some nice backgrounds!

Post by: SHiZNO on October 13, 2003, 11:18:00 AM
yeah, its really a JPG file renamed .txt to defeat Geocities anti-leach scripts...

they should be saved as BMP in the end tho (i went with BMP for this release, so ANYONE could edit/create their own backgrounds)

OH, another thign i wanted to discuss, was saving...
As of now it saves to "D:\" so it -HAS- to be played on the HDD...

I -really- dont want to deal with the 'official' xbox save mechanics right now, and trying to access another partition such as E:\ ended in an error opening the file so...im not sure if this is the fact i was running it on a debug BIOS, or that you cant just access the E parition for some fucked up reason? I noticed XPORT saves are on E: tho, so someone tell me what to do about this!
Title: Baku Baku Animals
Post by: Wishi on October 13, 2003, 01:01:00 PM
You need to mount the partition to drive e: so then you can access it.

okay jizzlobber, you went a bit off the template for the score background, but it was good so i just changed the code to fit into your background...heres a screnshot of it in action

Okaaay...well i did a Retail build today, and it was about 12mb(*.*, all files), but compressed (RAR) it was only 2.12 (due to bmp).. so thats okay i suppose.

All im waiting for now is for jizz to get me that last background (Champ), if you dont want to do it jizz, can you tell me where you got that photo, and the text? i can do it myself if you want

Well, i decided to revamp the menu, and did it all over, its decent (not as good as the emu-skins IMO, but its pretty good for a cheap homebrew game)

i took 3 new screenshots just for historical purposes..]

Here's a quick hint for lowering the size. Convert your bmps to tgas. You can load them exactly the same way and they're a fraction of the size but still good quality.

Actually, JPGs work too.

TGAs are nice, though, because they support transparency.

I've never been a massive fan of JPEGs as the bleeding and artefacts that are most often seen are very annoying even if the compression is good. Plus, as BJ says it supports transparency.

On the last screenshot picture you've posted the green area inside the playing field looks a bit too overloaded.  Could I suggest making it a little darker (more in line with the dark green at the top of the screen?  At the moment it looks like it could hurt your eyes after a while.

The background definitely needs a colour change, but a pale light green may do the job better than a dark one, since this is a happy game. wink.gif

Thanks for the soundtrack part (i didnt want to delete my soundtracks, and not sure if theres a way to 'emulate' no soundtracks in the XDK)

ill try fix that menu, my delay input is probably too long (it was pissing me off when it was super fast and itd repeat actions by accident)

and as for the get ready, i know it doesnt fit in huh...lol...how do you think itd be if it was like the 'GREAT' text?

updated a bit
-Fixed animal chewing (because i sped up animal move speed,
it set this off and ruined it...now it works nicely.
-attempted to fix no-soundtrack crash...should work now?
-changed a few graphics 'get ready' and a fee info boxes...
-sped up menu move speed...maybe a little too fast !?

sending you new copy wishi...
Title: Baku Baku Animals
Post by: Wishi on October 20, 2003, 01:30:00 AM
The no soundtrack fix is working fine now.

The black writing is much better replaced by that graphic. The text keeping score at the bottom-centre still seems a little dim however.

The menu speed before was fine, what I meant was that on pressing A sometimes it's obviously not checking the input at the correct time or being slowed somewhere so it doesn't get it. It just takes a couple of times to press to get into a menu.

Since you've put analog control in game, it should be easy enough to place it into a menu just so it's easier and people can have the choice of how to play without needing to keep switching.

There's just one other thing, while loading some people may think it's crashed so you might want to display a loading screen then do the rest of your loading. Otherwise it could look like it's hanging for the 3/4 secs.

Apart from that, it's fine, and certainly seems release worthy.
Title: Baku Baku Animals
Post by: SHiZNO on October 20, 2003, 12:06:00 PM
hmm, ill take a look at the button menu thing...
(and add analog support)

and what do you mean about loading? before the game starts? (before shiz logo?) if thats the case, i guess i could remove the sleep during logo code, and just quickly render that screen after DX is initialised (without all the textures etc)...

if it something else i dont know what you mean, it doesnt really load for me any other time...

well i guess ill fix these and send it to you, if everything works fine we can put it on xbins (i dont know who owns it or who to contact etc)...

Post by: Wishi on October 20, 2003, 12:16:00 PM
If you just load the SHiZNO screen and then render that then load the rest it'll be much better.

I can stick it on xbins for you if this next build works ok.

biggrin.gif
love it!

feedback... I think I noticed sometimes the animals leave a block they should eat.
slow blocks would be good, hopefully you can do this for part 2.
I think you have a pretty good animal to food ratio, sometimes it takes an eternity for the right animal to show which makes things challenging biggrin.gif

finally maybe you should consider adding default music, a good mate of mine is VERY good at making music and i'm sure he's make a great little tune for this game... happy game music with an animal flavour?
I suggest this because my HDD is full of metal and punk rock, doesn't work at all biggrin.gif

cheers for the cool game mate!

as for animals not eating the certain blocks, it seems fine here, ?? maybe i will find out what you guys mean, after playing it a bit more in-depth

:: EdiT - I See what you was talking about now, but it dont make the game any less playable, in my opinion but yea, im looking forward to future updates of this one, thats for sure, also i would just like to say, even if i goto options, and select random music, the tunes ALWAYS seem to play sequentially, but again it dont bother me, but you wanted feedback right ??
:: End of Edit ::

only thing i can think of at the moment is to add new sound fx, it would be cool to have like a clunk sound or something when u push down and the blocks hit the floor ?

also i was half expecting 1 block to fall at a time, i was well impressed when i saw it was 2 just like the proper game hehe smile.gif

YES MATE Keep UP this Level of work, 2 Thumbs up here, if i can think of any other ideas, i chuck them down for you to read in here m8. Thankyou for bringing another classic favourite of mine to the XBOX.

cool.gif Brings back a lot of youthful memories wink.gif

I used to make freeware games using a simple package a few years back, and although it was no-where near C++, it usually meant a lot of complicated logic being used to perform tasks to get past the program's own limitations. Basically, here's a way I would have used in order to make a Baku Baku style engine that ate ALL of the blocks smile.gif

Perhaps you could, when an animal block hits the bottom/another block, have it fire four invisible tracer objects in the four directions (up, down, left and right, of course smile.gif). If a tracer collides with a food block that doesn't match the animal it came from, it does nothing and the tracer is destroyed, but if it collides with a food block that matches the animal, it marks the block by creating a unique value associated with the block (created perhaps by its X and Y coordinates) and sets it to 1, then the marked blocks fires off tracers of its own, which move on to mark similar blocks, or be destroyed by different ones. In order to stop blocks being marked multiple times, have tracers destroyed by marked, similar blocks.

Once all of the blocks are marked (once all of the tracers are gone), expand a circle around the animal block as a detector. If it collides with a marked block, the animal sprite moves over it and the block is destroyed, and the circle is reset and expanded again (whether its from the original point of where the animal block was, or where the last block was destroyed is your choice, but the former is probably the best choice, as the animal should eat the blocks in a more logical order smile.gif Anyhow, this process is repeated until all of the marked blocks have been eaten smile.gif

Anyhow, that's the method I probably would have used. It's probably a slow and wasteful method of doing it, but like I said, I wasn't working with C++. Workarounds were often used to do anything more advanced than a bouncing ball wink.gif

I was just wondering how the number in the heart at the top of the screen increment(while playing the game). I played a lot an i just can'yt understand how it works.

Hope you will answer this.

the more 'combo' of food you eat, it adds to the opponents heart, and when the small hearts drop (time runs out)...it drops that number of blocks onto their board (then resets)
