The kernel is only half of what you need. There is a retail->debug conversion kit around somewhere that also includes a bunch of files, including the debug dashboard, that need to go on the hard drive.
-
Dev boxs have 128MB ram from what i understand, so maybe some solder and a 128MB stick of ram should be on the cards
-
Before XBH went down, a guy was offering to do memory upgrades for people. Iirc, $55 for just the 4 memory chips, or $100 for parts, installation and return shipping. All you had to do was ship your motherboard to him.

First of all... DONT USE THE DEVKIT RECOVERY CD !!!!!
it WILL break your XBOX !!!! IF you have already done this, go here to get app to fix it: [TEAM ASSEMBLY]
Here are the steps to get debugging up and running.. and btw, you DONT need 128mb nor the Debug Dashboard....
1. Get OpenXBOX/PCBioxx or any other 512KB or bigger modchip
2. Install it and flash Complex 1.03 DEBUG (has to be debug version of bios)
3. Install the XBOX SDK (Dont ask where to get it, I dont know and I dont have it)
4. Get the XBDM.DLL file from sdk install directory SDK\xbox\symbols\latest
5. Put this XBDM.DLL file on your XBOX Drive E:
6. Create a Directory called Devkit on E:\
7. Create an .ini file called xbdm.ini in this new E:\Devkit directory, leave the file empty..
8. Reboot XBOX and it should get an IP address from DHCP, then connect to this IP in the Explorer Extentions and set it as you default xbox connection..
Now you can create a VS 6.0 XBOX Application project, specify a Remote executable path as XE:\Whatever\appname.xbe, then use this new dhcp IP for remote debugging.. (there are ways to specify a static IP in the .ini file, but i dont know how)
Oh, and the Complex 1.03 DEBUG will actually let you use all standard retail applications and games as well
Also please note: I havent done this myself, since I dont have the SDK, but i heard rumours that this might work

Thanks alot. I didn't know about the xbdm files.
-
thanks Undead!!!
that was a big help!
could you tell me where you got that info?
maybe there are some more clues in there.
====
that ram upgrade scared me! lol!
thanks again

It just "came" to me in the middle of the night in the form of a loud thunderbolt.. I woke up and knew how debugging on XDK works ..
-
Has anyone actually installed the debug dashboard onto a retail xbox? If so, how does one find such a dashboard?
-
First off, you DONT need it.. see my post above.. second if you do get it; the Dashboard WILL screw your eeprom and you WILL be in deep trouble if you didnt back it up..
The debug kit dasboard is on the MS Devkit Recovery CD.. where to find it? Dont know..and please dont ask here either..
go ask on IRC maybe #xbins..
AGAIN, you DONT need it and it WILL break your XBOX.. go see EEPROM Restore Tutorial on exactly what will be waiting for you if you do decide to use it !!
-
I've done all you described above and played around a while, but still without any success.."can't connect to xbox".
It seems rastasega got it working, could any of you two look again if you did any additional things ?
( Or write the tutorial
)
Thanks in advance
-
Yeah, me too. I can take screenshots now, which is very cool, but I can't get it to connect for debug.
-
i haven't been able to get it to work either. its just that i haven't really been able to look for the bios.
personally I'm just concerned about getting official betas to run... thats it!
the way i see it the only thing i have to do is get complex1.03 and flash away.
is that right?
-
With the way undead described above, it doesn't work only with the debug bios. But i got it working with the complex debug pack, which includes the xdk launcher (60mb). But thats pretty hard to find.
-
I like the better method without a mod chip so u just flash the onboard tsop.
-
I know the person who knows how to (ExitWound from gotmod.com) go to their chat channel on irc.efnet.net #GotMod
-
It doesn't matter at all if the debug bios is in a modchip or in the tsop.
As long as debugging doesn't work for you with the bios in the mod, it won't work in the tsop.

Hm, I tried undead's instructions and I still cant get remote debugging work.
VC6 compiles it fine and transfers it to the xbox, and I can start the program on the xbox with control-F5, but if I try to debug it says "Cannot open file on remote machine"
