Title: How Do I Copy My Xboxdash.xbe Back To My Xbox?
Post by: Kane65 on February 12, 2009, 05:46:00 PM
While FTPing my xbox, I accidentally moved xboxdash.xbe to my computer instead of just copying it.  So I have an original copy but how can I get it back to my xbox?  Please help!

(XBox is soft-modded only and I get Error 13 on boot.)

ed: I just remembered that I have the action replay adaptor.  Can I go thru the exploit installation again to revive?

Thanks

If you used a gamesave softmod you should be able to cold boot the game then reload the hacked save. If you're lucky that will give you ftp access to restore xboxdash.xbe from your computer

If you hotswapped then you don't have that back door, and you'll have to hotswap to restore the file.

Still no luck.  The original LINUX Splinter Cell save is still on my xbox.  It shows up as a profile when I select NEW game.  Does nothing when I load it.  I can't delete it either.  Any suggestions?

How easy is it to remove the hard drive, open it on my 'puter and copy the file that way?

You could try using a recent live enabled game (Halo 2 or later) to restore the dash, then copy a clean gamesave across, and just start again - obviously you'll need a memory card and cables to do that.

Hotswapping is relatively easy - have a look here or here. You don't need to use xboxhdm - just hotswap then use Xplorer360 beta 6 to copy the file from your PC back to the Xbox disk.

Thanks Heimdall, I appreciate your help.

- I ran xplorer360 and it didn't recognize any fatx volumes.  It is connected properly on the 2nd ide cable and bios recognizes it.  It's hard to get help since the xplorer360 forums are closed.  I haven't initialized the disks (mbr) in windows disk mgmt even though it asks to.  I figured that would cause problems, but if not plz let me know.

- I have a copy of Splinter Cell which is supposed to have the dash installer.  I have no idea how to get it to run though.  I don't have an xbox live account.  Is that what I need to do?

- I don't have another xbox hdd for hotswapping.

You were right not to initialise the disk!!

You don't need another Xbox HDD for hotswapping. Hotswapping is where you boot the Xbox, then unplug the IDE cable at the right moment so that the disk is unlocked but still powered on. Then you plug it into your PC (have a look at the hotswap links for details) and continue to boot your PC. Once Windows has booted you run Xplorer360 beta 6 - it has to be that version - older version don't work.

I tried hot-swapping a few times... It took a long time for bios to get going and eventually I got a "disk boot failure, insert system disk error".  Kind of weird.  Removed xbox hdd and computer booted fine.

Now I'm getting error 16 and I can't run games.  I read that I need to leave xbox without power for several hours and I might be ok.  I'm going to try that. Assuming I get it going, how do i restore the dash from a live enabled game?  I've never noticed that option before so I'm not sure how to trigger it.

Don't know if it maters but I have Mech Assault (1st one), Star Wars Jedi Knights, Gauntlet, Starwars Battlefront II, Star Wars Republic Commando, TC Ghost Recon and TC Splinter Cell.  I think all of these are live-enabled.

ed...  I think I'm screwed with error 16.  If anyone has any suggestions, I'd appreciate it.  Is it possible to purchase a ready-to-go xbox hdd and just drop it in?

If you have error 16 and you can't get hotswapping to work then you need to use xboxhdm to unlock the disk. To do that you need a copy of the eeprom, and if you didn't take a backup you'll need to build an eeprom reader.

If you're going to all that trouble, you may as well upgrade your softmod at the same time, to one that supports shadow C. Use the stock C from Slayers / CASH, and use Kingroach 3.1 to build the softmod file set on top of the stock C.

Even if you could buy a ready-built disk, you'd still need a copy of your eeprom to lock it to your motherboard.

Dude, thanks so much for your help.  I was learning how to make an eeprom reader when I decided to give hotswapping one last go.  I was able to get it to work!  Because the issue seemed to be getting past my pc's bios when the hard drive was powered up by the xbox, I decided to do it differently than I had before.  In case anyone is interested, I did the following:

- Connected xbox hdd to PC's power and IDE cables.
- Booted PC to Windows Vista
- Disconnected IDE from PC but left power connected to PC
- Connected hdd to xbox's IDE cable and fired up the xbox
- Removed xbox ide cable right as or slightly before error 16 popped up.
- Connected it back to pc's ide cable
- Ran xplorer360 and for the first time, it found the xbox hdd and was able to copy the needed file to it.

Now I'm going to figure out how to get a copy of that eeprom!  Thanks again
