you can use any drive that can be locked. you might want to check your harddrives model in this list:
http://xboxdrives.x-pec.com/?p=list
To upgrade to new drive, just create a new drive from scratch, then softmod it ( you dont need to unlock). After its all done, then lock it using your eeprom . ( look at xboxhdm for dummies in my sig.). When setting up softmod using the installer, choose "Ndure basic". Also select "Use nkpatcher .67 in nkpatcher options.
After you are done with softmod up and running from new hard drive. Install "xbpartitioner" in your xbox and format F and G drives. Then install XBMC as default dash ( replace the files in E:\dash folder). NKpatcher has virtual cdrom enabled so you will be able to load games from game .iso and xbmc can play movies from dvd/cd images.

Is there any advantage to using xbpartitioner over the built-in format menu? (Any kind of cluster stuff or such)
Yes, cluster size. You should use xbpartitioner if your hdd is over 256Gb or data corruption will result.

Thanks, I will have to do that for my next xbox then. Luckily I only have the 160GB in this one. Plan to do a 500GB xbox next and give this one to my kids. Now I am on my quest for the perfect wireless ap/bridge/router.
Out of topic but in your place, is a fonera available easily?
-
I think fonera cost around $29. But there was some coupon few months ago that allowed you to order one for free. I got one and flashed with dd-wrt. Dont know if the offer/model still available.

I saw some guy post about fonera being $17 on the ddwrt forum. Could not find that though. benbargains had an airlink for $21 (ddwrt-able). I also already have a wrap and if find a nice 802.11n minipci to put in it, I might try that.

I have a 400G hd in now. I started xbpartitioner 1.0. How do I make it format?
When I press the start button, then press Y, it just goes back to the partitions screen. Is it supposed to do more (some sort of formatting progress)? I ran nkpatcher .67 and enabled G from the system menu. I was able to format it with the "format menu" and my G drive shows formatted as 250G and F as 123G. Is there something I am missing?

I'm not really sure what it does as far as formatting it, but I did the same thing today (500gigs) and all of the writing/formatting/whatnot took only like 5-6 seconds for each partition.
I'm sending all of my backed up stuff back to my XBox. It's worked fine so far.

I redid my ISO and redid my HD (from scratch). It worked fine this time around. Not sure what was wrong last time, but I wasn't able to toggle options with the A button as the help screen instructed either. I noticed this by doing another two 160GB xboxes for my kids and xbpartitioner worked fine with those. I must have just missed something and forgot about it last time.
