Title: Cheapest Way To Softmod My X-box?
Post by: obcd on November 08, 2007, 03:19:00 AM
Hi,

you can indeed perform a softmod by copiing some files on the harddrive.
You will need the xboxhdm package to partition and format the harddisk so that it is recognised by the xbox. You will also need the Kingroach Ndure 3.1 package.

A normal xbox bios only boots when it's harddisk is locked. So, you will need to lock the disk with the password the xbox will use to unlock it. You will need to know the xbox eeprom contents to obtain this. There are several ways to get this information. (The eeprom.bin file 256 bytes long)

1. You can perform a hotswap with the original xbox disk.
2. You can build a eeprom reader.
3. You can temporary install a modchip.

Option 1 is the cheapest. You don't need additional hardware for it. The harddisk ata interface was never designed for hotswapping, so, you can damage your pc, your disk and your xbox.

As you can notice, I am not much a fan of hotswapping.

Option 2 is my preferrable way of doing it. You only need 3 connections to the xbox mobo, and they are all 3 on holes of the LPC header, so, fairly easy to solder.

Option 3 can be cheap if you know someone willing to let you use his modchip for a while.

regards.

You don't happen to know anyone with a modded xbox do you?   If you do you can skip the action replay all-together by ftp'ing the mod files to his box, and to a memory card/USB drive from there.

Check this out: http://forums.xbox-s...howtopic=628431

I've never done it that way before, but it would be more reliable than hotswapping methinks.

Just need to make a Female USB -> Male XBOX cable so you can plug in a thumb drive to the xbox.

After that you'll need a copy of splinter cell (I found mine used @ Hastings for less than $10), a cheap thumbdrive (I got a new 512mb for less than $10) and access to xbins.

Then after that not only is your box modded, but you'll have the stuff to do it to your friends xbox's.
