Thanks to anyone that has takes the time to respond to this message. Here's a little background. I've used the Splinter Cell exploit to soft mod my xbox. It works fine. I recently acquired an old 80 gig western digital drive (it does support locking). I would like to be able to install the larger drive .
I would use xhdm, but all I have are notebook computers. So, I stumbled across chimps hd clone and gave it a try. (I am using a usb 2 hd case as a power source) the swap went well, and I was able to clone the drive. However, it won't lock!
My guess is that maybe I need to copy the backup to another folder, but I thought I'd ask the experts.
Any thoughts?

Figured it out. Stupid mistake. Chimps is solid!

Figured it out. Stupid mistake. Chimps is solid!
I have a softmodded Xbox. I don't think it matters what game I used. Also I happen to use UnleashX not Evox. Not sure if that matters.
Three questions.
I have the eeprom.bin backed up at \eeprom\backup\eeprom.bin. So can you answer your own question? Will Chimp find eeprom.bin when attempting to lock?
More importantly, WTF do I find Chimp 2.6. I keep on hearing "look in the usual places". Well the entire internet is acting very unusual. For the life of me, I cannot find it anywhere.
Finally, is installing Chimp a matter of FTPing a folder under E:\apps? Just like I did XBMC for instance.
Thanks in advance for your time and help.

Hi, you don't really need the backup if your using chimps (although it is always wise to keep backups of EVERYTHING). Try http://xguides.xbox-scene.com/tikiwiki/tik...mps%20hd%20tool as that has the tutorial and the files. Read the Readme first as that should give the most detailed instructions as to the installation and such. I've used chimps a couple of times because I only have a laptop and its very reliable, glad that Questions got it working (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Okay at least I got Chimp now. I don't think the folder name matters, i.e. UDATA, but what the heck.
So I'm going to try this. I don't have a computer handy near the XBox and I don't have a molex splitter either. So I'm going to try and use an external drive enclosure that's lying around for powering my new drive for cloning. I think that way I can keep the power off on the new drive until I'm good and ready to switch the IDE cable from the DVD-ROM to the new drive.
The only thing I'm worried about is frying my XBox or HD. Oh well, being a wimp never really helped anyone did it?
Wish me luck. And thanks for that link. Wonder why it was so easy to find chimp. Not. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Should probably work although I have never tried something of that sort.

You are right about the folder name, refer to this post for details.

IT DID WORK !!!
Now I only see 137GB of my 160GB. That's because I don't have G: drive formatted. Anyone have url link that will explain how to do that I would be grateful. But for now, no complaints and no rush to do this.
NOW, here's more important question. I have two more XBox 'es. One of these two is Made in China and at least a 1.6. So now I'm going to have to go the Telnet route. So here's how I'm interpreting the instructions on the tutorial. If someone can confirm / clarify I would appreciate it.
Before I open the XBox, I go and change the Network settings. The IP should be anything more than 192.168.0.4, I'll just make it 192.168.0.5. I will also change Http Proxy and make port 23. Dunno why I'm doing either, especially the latter, I assume I have to do this.
Then I'll proceed as before, accept as soon as I run Chimp my TV screen is going to "go green". So then I can take my Laptop and connect it to my XBox using RJ-45 cable. Then go to command prompt on laptop and telnet to 192.168.0.3, login using "root" / " xbox" and then do stuff similar to what I did before except I'll do it on my laptop.
Did I miss anything?

No need to do any of this - especially changing the FTP port to 23, which you should never do (23 is the telnet port, 21 is the FTP control port). It won't make any difference to chimp - it allocates its own ports and IP addresses. Just leave your Xbox dash network settings alone!
The rest of your method looks fine - just make sure you use a crossover cable to connect the Xbox to your laptop.
You have to enable the G drive in your dashboard - in UnleashX it's under System - Settings - Storage. Then you format it using the format entry on the Unleashx menu.

Okay so all I do is Telnet to 192.168.0.3 because Telnet "server" is running on the XBox at that IP I presume ??? I hope so. So I will not change any network settings.
Now under UnleashX, under System - Setting - Storage, if I enable G: drive, I'm hoping "Format G" automagically appears as a menu item. I don't know how it will, but I hope it does :-).
Thanks much. I'll give this a shot soon enough.

Yes, when you run chimp the telnet server is listening on 192.168.0.3.
The format option should be there already as part of the standard menu. If it isn't just copy the appropriate section from the standard UnleashX config.xml.

Okay, I forgot I have an older version of UnleashX. IF I just upgrade it I think the options for formatting will become available.
More questions. First, I guess there is no way around not having a crossover cable? If so, I have to purchase one, so cannot continue this weekend :-(. But more importantly, does telnet only work when PC is physically connected to XBox using the crossover cable? Just for kicks, I started Chimp on my XBox which is networked wirelessly. I know because I've been FTPing stuff to it. I went to my PC Dos prompt and tried to telnet 192.168.0.3 wirelessly into my XBox. I get the following error
Connecting To 192.168.0.3...Could not open connection to the host, on port 23: Connect failed
I did not make any network settings changes.
-
You don't need a crossover cable - you can connect using your home network, but your network needs to be using 192.168.0.x addresses, otherwise your PC won't see the Xbox. Lots of routers default to serving 192.168.1.x addresses via DHCP, so you'll need to either change your DHCP scope to 192.168.0.x (and make sure it doesn't include 192.168.0.3), or manually set your PC IP address to 192.168.0.4.

Okay now I'm more confused.
If I have my XBox wirelessly connected to my home network through my Router, then as long as it is distributing addresses 192.168.0.4 and beyond, I'm good. Then I can telnet through my PC. As long as my PC is also on the same "scope", e.g. 192.168.0.10 then it'll be able to telnet to 192.168.0.3. Is this correct? If so, then I don't need any network cable at all, period.
Now, if I'm directly connecting my PC to the XBox, then my XBox does not even need to be on any network because Chimp will still have 192.168.0.3 open for Telnet. So if my PC is also not on any network, will it be able to hit XBox through telnet using a regular cable? I'm thinking not, and I'll need a crossover cable in this situation, right?
Thanks in advance.

Correct, and correct. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Okay, I disabled the wireless network on my Laptop.
I changed the XBox IP to static 192.168.0.15
I tried telnet to 192.168.0.3 into Chimp. I do have a crossover cable made sure of that.
I am unable to telnet. I tried changing the IP of the laptop to 192.168.0.8. I get invalid IP error. Dunno if the PC also has to have an IP that is in the 192.168.0.* range. Wouldn't think so.
So at this time, I have done everything I possibly can based of the tutorial and your input.
Can you please think of something else I can try and / or doing wrong?
Thanks much.

Okey Dokey, I was actually able to do this !!!
There is one crucial piece of information missing from all the Chimp 2.6 guides with XBox versions 1.6+. And that is, before you can telnet from your PC to the XBox, you need to set the Subnet Mask on the PC Network adapter to 255.255.0.0. Most people have it at 255.255.255.0 for normal networking. Phew !!!
The telnet display was also a little garbled. Luckily since I already upgraded one drive in a version 1.2, I was able to muddle through the interface after a couple of attempts. The bummer was after I locked the slave. It still shows as unlocked. So I didn't know it was done until I put the slave as master and rebooted.
Still one problem outstanding. This time after upgrading I put latest version of UnleashX. Sure enough, this has the "Format Menu" with password "Xbox". Now I have enabled "G drive" under Settings->Storage. So then I go inside the "Format Menu" and say "Format G". It asks a question to confirm I really want to do that. I say "Yes". It does absolutely NOTHING !!!
I have a 160GB drive. So anything over 137 GB should be G drive. Well, it isn't. So I'm still losing 20GB odd of Hard Disk space. Oh well...

Glad you got there, but you didn't read the instructions! You DON'T change the Xbox IP address to 192.168.0.15, you change the PC IP ADDRESS to 192.168.0.x. The Xbox IP address when running Chimp is fixed at 192.168.0.3.

This is why it didn't work, and yes, it does have to have an IP address in the 192.168.0.* range. Changing the subnet mask to 255.255.0.0 just puts 192.168.0.* and 192.168.1.* in the same range, but you were lucky - changing that at one end (the PC) doesn't always work.
Try using XBPartitioner 1.1 to set up the spare space as partition 7 - it will give you more information about how much spare space there is on the disk, and allow you to see exactly how the space is currently allocated.

Okay the tutorial I read said to make sure the XBox IP was in the "0" range. In any event, we have put that baby to rest :-)
I will try XBPartitioner some day. As I said it is not that much of a big deal right now. My only outstanding "problem" right now is transferring around 30GB of stuff from one xbox to another. Wirelessly :-). I tried the FTP client in XBMC. Crapped out after a couple of hours. Tried it twice. Need a PC FTP client that lets me coordinate transfers between two remote XBox'es I guess. Tried FlashXP. Piece of junk will not work.
Trying to avoid FTPing everything to PC from one XBox and then back to the other XBox using FileZilla. Heard there was something called XBoxFTP. Dunno if it only works in EVoX or UnleashX as well.
In any event, this was an awesome learning experience with stellar results. Thank you ONE and ALL.
Best Regards.

XBMC as a dash can do this.

First, I must correct myself. I meant I tried SmartFTP. I haven't tried FlashXP, which I have heard is the best FTP program out there. Now there is open source version called xlFTP which is supposed to be close. So I'll try that at some point.
I did try the FTP tool in XBMC dash of course. It craps out after couple of hours. I thought I mentioned that. I tried twice. Approximately after couple of hours it errors out.
Thanks.
