Any tips?
I followed Rocky's guide, but after doing the swap, I went to look at the C: dirve of the unmoded xbox, and it looked just like the C: drive of the moded box.
I assumed that it must have just not refreashed, so I copied the files over anyway. Now I get the "Send your Xbox in for servece" warning.
I tried the hotswap a few more times, (but waiting till the warning screen was back), and then the C: drive appeared to be a mixture of the two drives. It had the files that I had copied (Phenox loader, and ernie and bert), but also had my xbmc.ini files from my moded box.
I guess when I get the time, I will try the hotswap agian, but make sure to disconnect the IDE cable before the error message appears.

why are you using a 2003 tutorial? Do you think it's strang you got errors using such outdated crap or something?
-
OK, I was using what was available from the "Tutorials" on the main page. I guess you are suggesting I use the guide in your sig.?
-
I suggest checking the pinned topics including the tutorial topic

OK, so now I tried using DaddyJ's guide. I got the linux distro to see the xbox drive unlocked, but xbrowser would not work. It said something about no harddrive. xboxhd worked though. When I tried to do Option 2 (Rebuid C Partition), it said that there was no fatx partition table. So I tried Option 1. That just sat there saying press any key to abort operation. I left it for an hour or so, but it did nothing.
Am I hosed? Should I just buying a mod chip, and be done with it?
-
The Xbox harddrive was on the primary master (with no other harddrives attached), and xboxhd said that the drive was unlocked.
It took me several tries to get xboxhd to say that the drive was unlocked. Several times it said that the drive was locked, then finaly I got it to say that it was unlocked, so I am fairly sure that it was unlocked, but who knows, maybe it was locked.
-
That's it. I think I am just going to by an X2 chip. I have done 3 mods with X2 chipes, and never had a single problem. This seems much easyer, much less time consuming, and has much better support available.
-
yeah softmodding requires patience, some indepedancy and the ability to effectively filter out the good from bad guides. So it might indeed be better for you to not do it.
-
OK, I have no doubt that there are a lot of smart people frequenting this section of the forums. I also have no doubt that Softmods are sweet. However, there does not seem to be anyone offering any real advice, or even links to appropriate advice for my issue.
As it appears that I have overwritten importante parts (fatx partition table) of my original Xbox hard drive, is there any way to recover and do a soft mod?
-
no he was right, your drive was locked. which means you are not hotswapping correctly..
you can kill your hd easily if you are not careful.
overwrote parts of the fatx huh? .. well if you made a good xboxhd disk with a UXE mod on it, you can build the drive from scratch, and it will repartition and format the hd correctly.
hotswapping isnt for everyone, and my guide is just that a guide, the ways i have shared, work for me, and countless others, but everyones xbox is different, some state v1.6 boxs need more motivation to hotswap, i cannot verify this directly.
-
My box is a 1.1, so I think that should be "easy".
Now Xboxhd stated that the drive was unlocked, but you believe that it was still locked? I guess that could be. I will try again the next night that I have some time. I built the xboxhd disk as per your guide, so it should be correct. Is there anyway (from the linux promt) to verify if it is built correctly?
Option 1 (using xboxhd) is to rebuild from scratch corect?
-
Anyone know how to tell if your XboxHDM disk has everything it needs?
Also, doing the hotswap on the original Xbox harddrive, I don't need the EEPROM info, even if it has to be rebuilt from scratch?
-
Thanks. maybe the jumpers set to "Master" is the key. I am going to try again with your latest advice.
-
How long should it take to do the build from scratch option? It seems to be taking a long time!
-
i was away over the weekend, so I let it run all weekend. It was still stuck on this screen all weekend
Building an Xbox HD from scratch is a two step
procedure. First the partition table is buit
Then the partitions are formated.
We will now search /dev/hda for an xbox partitoin table..
No xbox-partition table found on /dev/hda
Drive is not locked but locking is enabled
Don't reboot until you have build a working xbox HDD
since rebooting will relock the drive.
Press any key to abort the operation.
Is my XboxHDM disk hooched?
-
Just out of curiousity, at the linux prompt (where you type xboxhd etc) if you type:
ls /dev/hda5*
(thats LS in lowercase)
do you get any results? Its a sure fire way to check if your drive is unlocked and being detected on primary master..
ls /dev/hd*
is what you type if you get no results.. Basically if the drive is unlocked and detected you should see hd?50 to hd?55 where ? is 'a' for primary master, 'b' for p. slave, 'c' for sec. master, 'd' for sec. slave..
As long as its detected somewhere you can mount/access it manually, but xboxhdm needs it to be on hda for the automated script stuff as you probably already know..
-
Cool.
I am re-building my Xboxhdm disk with the files from slayers rather than from UXE. I will also try that list command.
-
slayers is meant for chips in general unless you just wanna rebuild a stock hdd.. If you're going back to stock it can't hurt to try to include UEEE/SCEEE.. Even if you mess that up, the stock dash still works, and if you do it right then you will have ftp access, and can mod with a gamesave installer without owning a mem card or exploitable game since unleashx lets you browse/launch xbe from the hdd..
As far as gamesave installers go, I can verify that my old "Another Gamesave Installer" will work via the method I described.. Krayzie's may or may not, I'm not sure how his scripts run anymore..

I just had some time to play around. The list command gave me nothing (ls /dev/hda), while dev/hda5 gave me an error. Maybe because I did not type dev/hda5*.
So if the drive is locked, why does xboxhd say that it is unlocked?
Man, this is fun and educational and all, but the amount of time I have spent on this....
-
If you understand wildcards in any OS you'd realize that if ls /dev/hda yield nothing that only means that there is no "/dev/hda" this might be a good sign if you did mess up with the * since you hope that /dev/hda50 to hda55 exist (not 'hda').. I would expect 'ls /dev/hda' to yield a result if the hdd was NOT properly unlocked/installed.. Actually, you should see /dev/hdb - /dev/hdz (or something like that) no matter what, but the ONLY thing you care to see is hda50-hda55.. (Basically no numbers means no partitions)..
To break down the cmdline, you are interested to know what is in the directory /dev/ (ls is like dir) and you can move from directory to directory with 'cd directory', 'cd /', 'cd ..'

I had time to play with my box last night. here is the results of my list command attempts
ls /dev/hda --> /dev/hda
ls /dev/hda5 --> No Such Device
ls /dev/hda5*--> No Such Device
I also noted that when starting xboxhd, for a briefe second it displays No Such Device, even when it later says that the hard drive is unlocked.
I would have to assume that this means the hard drive is locked?
So....Now the question is why is it not unlocking?
Here is what I have tried.
My xbox has a Western Digital HD if that matters?
Originaly I had the box connected to a TV, and was dissconnecting the drive from the xbox just before the error screen came up. I tried connecting it to the PC before powering up the PC, at the first menu screen, and at the command prompt.
Now I am doing it headless. I have tried dissconnecting the IDE cables as the LED turns Red (about 6 seconds after power up), and a few second on either side. Again, I tried connecting it to the PC before powering up the PC, at the first menu screen, and at the command prompt.
Forgot to mention, that the DVD is dissconected, so I get the good error (12? or is it 16? can't remember). And I am indeed connecting the harddrive to the PCs primary with with a cable havin no twist (ie. no cable select). The harddrive is in "Master" mode, not slave, or cable select. For the Western Digital, that is the jumper removed.
What am I doing wrong?
