Title: Xbox Hdm Unlocking Issues!
Post by: cTTbLaKeMAn on August 28, 2005, 10:15:00 PM
Ok, i am trying to fix a buddies xbox and it has error 21.  He bought it from a local gamestop in used condition, he played it, then i think got an update from live, played some halo 2 then he went to go back to it one day, and BOOM!  Error 21!  Now, i think i need to rebuild the c partion of the box.  I am using xbox hdm and i got the eeprom using LiveInfo.  My question is: when i try to unlock the hdd using option 3 of xboxhdm, it gives me the hdd key and stuff, but it only says detecting drive.... and it stays like that for minutes and doesnt wanna unlock.

There was no mod attempt, no chip attempt, just a plain out crash!

any ideas?
help is MUCH appreciated!

Edit: I found out using HDM that the HDD is:
"
Security Supported: yes
Security enabled: yes
Securtiy locked: yes
Security frozen: no
Security count expired: no
Enhanced security erase supported: no
Security Level: Maximum

Output save to file hdkey.txt

              Press Enter to continue... "

As quoted from Xbox HD Maker.

Is it possible to unlock an HDD on an error 21 screen?

do you have the actual eeprom from the box?.. it would save some trouble if you just hotswap it.. read dadyj's hotswap tutorial.. after teh hotswap, plugin xboxhdm and rebuild C drive..

i did a hotswap in windows and used liveinfo to grab the eeprom and pressed the save .bin file in liveinfo, and i think that was the eeprom....

did you rename it to eeprom.bin and placed it into eeprom folder?.. try using this command:

unlockhd -p "password"

type the full hd unlock password in the place of password..

ok, its done rebuilding and it kicked me back out to the 8 option menu.  Then i reboot and i go to lock it again, and its already locked.....

what now?

ok it did something weird, cause now it still doesnt work at it boots to 21 again, and it seems like the rebuild didnt work.  BUT the hotswap with error 12 worked!

Should i try Slayers Autoinstaller?

ok, nvm, fixed.  But im off at where i started.  I need to unlock the HDD and keep it unlocked.  Error 12 keeps it open for about 60 seconds and the locks it!  Any ideas?

When i first experimented with Xboxhdm awhile ago i came across the dreaded

Drive is not locked but locking is enabled
Dont reboot until you have build a working xbox hdd
since rebooting will relock the drive.
press any key to abort the operation....."

This usually means a couple of things.  You either did not successfully hotswap your harddrive or your harddrive is corrupted somehow by moving it around too much or whatever.... Mine happened to be a dead drive....

If you have the eeprom.bin like i think you said you did then you should be fine.  Just go get another harddrive and use the eeprom.bin to build yourself a new harddrive with xboxhdm.  If it worked then you know your problem.  But if you have your eeprom.bin why are you hotswapping in the first place?  Anyways if you don't have your eeprom and your harddrive is fried then your only bet is to get a mod chip from a friend or wherever, plug it in to rebuild yourself a new drive.

what if i do the hotswap w/ error 12, LOCK IT while its unlocked, and set the master password to XBOXSCENE, then unlock it again and rebuild the c partion?

you cant lock the HD, you dont have the key.. (cant set master pass also)

try deleting everything off C and replacing it with a clean c from slayers (use xbrowser so u know for sure its ok!)

I think you are missing the point here.  If you have the HDD unlock key then you don't need to hotswap your HDD at all.  An as for slayers you need an xbox iso program like Xiso or similar to open it up and extract the M$ dash files.
