Title: Changing Led On Front Of Xbox To Red
Post by: 66Nicks on February 24, 2005, 08:46:00 PM
Ok, there must be a tut for this somewhere.. I just cant find it..
so pls point me to it, or just xplain if its easy.
I have soft mod UXE installed using Blackwars installer (works GREAT)
and I want to play Live by coldbooting with the disc (booting with OEM disc in tray instead of booting and then inserting disc). This way I wont get banned (until they start scanning HD's)
What I want is to change the LED to RED when I am using the hacked bios so that I can verify that the coldboot has in fact loaded the M$ bios if the LED is green..
There are a lot of tutorials about using XBTOOLS to change the LED on a bios
on a modchip and flashing it back onto the chip.. but there must be an easier way with the softmod right?

Pls dont post warnings about how I'll get banned etc.. I really dont care.. I only have one month left on LIVE, and If I do get banned I'll just ge a new EEPROM.. I've posted this question in other forums and no-one answers.. they just warn me about how other ppl got banned.. *annoying*

blackwras installer uses NKpatcher and that dont have any LED options.. When the coldboot os right then you will be able to go to xbox live, you wont be able to go to live when Nkpatcher is loaded since it has live blocking...

I dont see why you would get banned for asking this question.. blink.gif

I cant confirm, but the test might also be effective if you change the LED color on your dashboard (in the settings).

Thx, I'll try it..
some else has mentioned to me that with nkpatcher theres no way to edit the LED color but that Unleashx will let me do it.. but they said it wouldn't work for what I was trying to do.. well I guess its gonna be trial and error  tongue.gif

Just tried this with UXE Fonts 71 using Daddyj's tools with K5838. .  Worked like a charm.  If you cold boot, it stays green, if you boot without a game, it changes to orange.

Pretty nice.  Trying to figure out on how to change it to red now.

Thx

Lucho

Edit:  Forgot to Thank xman954 for the link.

I just followed the link xman954 posted.  All I did was download the fonts from the usual places.  Then I used Daddyj's Xbox Custom Font Compilier, put nasm in the same directory as the font compiler.

Opened ernie.asm in ultraedit (or any hex editor), changed the values to match what xman954 posted, then used Daddyj's tools to change the bootpath to my default.xbe and compiled.  (You can always hex edit your current ernie.xtf and see what the bootpath is)

Renamed my current ernie.xtf to ernie.bak just in case, and then copied the newly compiled one.

PM me if you need help.

Ok, just b/c I don't want to mess around with things I don't understand more than I have to.. would I be able to just copy the fonts I already have on my xbox to my pc and edit those?? I think the Blackwar installer put bert_ate_ernie.xtf on there.. (I'll double check when I get home) so if I just edited that and threw it back onto my box is that gonna work.. or do I need to get a specific font from "the usual places"?

You would need to edit the asm code because the changes needed will not be visible in a hex editor.  It will be giberish.  You can hex edit to see the boot path and make you put them in your new fonts.

To make it easier, just change the settings in unleashx to either red or orange, no need to change fonts to do this.

I just did it out of curiousity.

Yes but say he boots a backup game. If the dash never loads it will still leave the led green. He's looking for a sure way to tell if the exploit is loaded or not. Which is'nt a bad idea really. The only way to do this is to do it thru the fonts. Or the bios. But if your using a kernal patcher your out of luck there.

Didnt rmenhal mention adding L.E.D support in v11?

If not , the fonts way is pretty easy.

i think that everyone should remember that nkpatcher has live blocking (which you should ALWAYS enable). if for some reason you cold booted a backup and tried to go online, you wouldn't be able to. the LED's don't really matter when nkpatcher10 is already going to save your butt...

not saying getting to play around with the LED wouldn't be fun...just saying that i don't think it's all that necessary.

EDIT, someone provided the code for orange.. I guess once I figure out HOW to edit, then I still need the code for red right?? blink.gif

Not sure what the difference is.

Thx for the byte value for red.. good to know..
now I just need to figure out how to fix my dillema with nkpatcher not loading the fonts I need.. or not being able to compile bert_ate_ernie-generic.asm.
Is there a nkpatcher.asm that I could edit to point to  bert.xtf and ernie.xtf?
Woulk that be my solution??

Could you rename bert ate ernie.asm to ernie.asm make your changes then recompile with the tools and rename back to bertate ernie?

(Is there even such a src called bert_ate_ernie-generic.asm?)

Not sure but worth a shot.

The easy way just use nasm to compile:

nasm -o ernie.xtf ernie.asm

I think you should be able just to use ernie.asm for this.  Not really sure.

Is there something that looks for a specific name of bert_ate_ernie-generic in the fonts folder? What determines what the font should be called?

I would just try using the standard UXE fonts.  src is provided and use Daddyj's tools.  Basic ernie.asm.

NKPatcher doesnt load any fonts.

the udpdate.xbe loads bert&ernie, then they in turn load nkpatcher.

to the people trying to change colors with bert_ate_ernie....just try using the bert and ernie fonts with an S.xtf, that almost always works. i've never come across an xbox that didn't work with that setup.

Someone just PM'd me from another forum I posted in and said to edit my bios using BXtools.. but its my understading that NKpatcher doesn't support this.. or at least thats what other ppl claim in OTHER forums.. can anyone verify.. If I wanted to try this out, what file would I be looking for? It's a .BFM file right?

Have you ever read krayzie's n00b faq's?

NKPatcher is a kernal aka bios patcher, which means it edits m$'s retail bios to allow for our needs.

A Bios Loader aka pbl/ meetoo/fbl loads a modified bios, aka evox m series and eXecuter bios's....

Editing the LED in a bios loader is easly done using the bios editing tools supplied or in some cases editing the boot.cfg file.

Editing the LED in nkpatcher isnt supported yet!, so therefor you need to do it manually in the fonts.

ok, so I would leave my current bert_ate_ernie-generic.xtf file where it is in the C: directory with nkpatcher.. and I would rename bert.xtf and ernie.xtf to S.xtf? and then place them where? in the directory with update.xbe??

make sure nkpatcher is signed, you could try using the genereic fonts, i don't really know a lot about daddyj's font compiler so i'm not sure what else could cause the error.

I didn't edit nkpatcher at all.. and if I put the bert ate ernie font back it loads fine.. don't think the prob is ther..  my best guess so far is that dashupdate.xbe is the file that loads the fonts right?? and its looking for the specific file Bert_ate_ernie-generic.xtf and when I replace the fonts.. even though they may be working fonts.. nothing is looking for them right? if I'm right then how would I edit a copy of dashupdate.xbe to point to my new fonts? Also once I edit that I assume I'd have to -habibi sign it right?

With UXE you usually have NKPATCHER running which has LIVE disabled.. when you COLDBOOT nkpatcher will not run and therefore you can access live.. it is debatable whether this is still SAFE to access live this way w/o completely removing sofmod as some ppl claim to have been banned (although I just think that they are incompetent)
I have a chipped box with all kinds of non stock items in C: drive and I go on LIVE all the time with the chip disabled.. and no problems..
but it's still a risk you have to take as M$ could start scanning HDs anytime.

the ernie.asm file should resemble

xbestr      db '\Device\Harddisk0\Partition1;default.xbe',0

thats e:\default.xbe

if you change it to

xbestr      db '\Device\Harddisk0\Partition2\nkp;default.xbe',0

that would be c:\nkp\default.xbe

Ok, but nkpatcher is in my fonts folder in C: and its called nkpatcher.xbe
do I need to rename it to default.xbe or just change the path in ernie to
"xbestr db '\Device\Harddisk0\Partition2\fonts;nkpatcher.xbe',0"

Yes, either move your nkpatcher.xbe and rename it to where and what the path in the font files is. Or edit the path in the font to point to your current nkpatcher.xbe.
