all right i was trying to setup shadowc and in the process hosed my hdd.  i was trying a new nkpatcher.xbe and it didn't work.  after i tried to restore the system by deleting the new nkpatcher and using the old one, i got a error 21.  crap... i can usually fix anything by returning to the old file.

anyway i tried everything i knew to restore my c, but nothing worked so finally i decided to restore my c part only with UXE using xboxhdm, my last resort.  disgusted that i had lost a couple ini files i booted the new c only to find ....  ERROR 21.  i hate that thing

why isn't this working?  i would just rebuild all parts but i have games and apps on f: that i won't be able to restore.  

any suggestions would be helpful right now

how did you build the shadow c? did you use the create shadow c app? or did you do the whole make a file named shadowc then try to format it and such?

also, where is your main dashboard booting from? that could be your problem. and if your shadowc drive is running and you had your dash booting from C, you could run a dash by burning a cd-r with an evox default.xbe and evox.ini file and then putting that in your drive when your turn on the xbox. from there you should use the detach iso utility (came with nkpatcher) or you could use a biosloader to load a new bios (this would also disable the shadowc) then you should delete your shadowc.img so that you can boot from your normal C drive setup. (fixing your normal C drive setup in xboxhdm won't do anything if it's still screwing up while trying to load the dash from shadowc)

or you could use xbrowser in xboxhdm to delete the shadowc.img file...

im not using xboxhdm on my xbox... no chip

im using it on my pc.  forget shadowc.  im just trying to get my hdd to work again.  i rebuilt my c from xboxhdm loaded on my pc.  this usually formats c and places the UXE files on C.  i know it works this is the original cd i used to softmod my xbox.

thanks for your help, any other suggestions?

ummm....xboxhdm only works on your computer...and if nkpatcher runs and patches the kernel, you can boot off of the dvd drive. unless you set nkpatcher to boot dash only (which would have been a bad idea in my opinion....)

you said you set up a shadow c drive right? if i'm correct....then read my post a little more closely...no matter how many times you reformat and re-setup your c drive, the shadowc.img file (usually) loads from the E drive so it wouldn't get touched and would load up the next time you started your xbox (after fixing the C drive) and cause the error.

edit: tell me more about your setup and perhaps then i'll have a better idea

right now it has the nkpatcher.xbe from the UXE.  

so if i boot my pc with xboxhdm and delete the shadowc.img from E, it should work?

well....this tends to happen a lot to people that used uxe complete....did you use that?

basically my thoughts are this:

you created a shadowc image but didn't put the dashboard files on it. the xbox boots up, loads nkpatcher, switches c drives and then errors out because your shadowc has no dash file to load up. if this is the case...then deleting your shadowc drive should fix it (assuming that your C drive is healthy). if you made your own uxe setup and are loading the dash from the E drive, then this may not help you....but it's not like it's hard to create another shadowc so i'd just try it anyways if i were you.

other than that, make sure that nkpatcher is signed with habibi, make sure that everything is in the right place (fonts load nkpatcher loads dash) and see what happens.

i still don't understand how that could have screwed up my setup before i rebuilt my c part.  is e:/shadowc/shadowc.img a constant default for shadowc?  i never enabled shadowc on in my nkpatchers.

I believe it's automatically enabled. So the only way to not use it is to never create the shadowc.img. Or delete it if there's one present.

what if you edit your nkpatcher to look somewhere else (ie. c:shadowc.img)?  does it still also look in e:/shadowc/shadowc.img

really daddyj? i was under the impression that it just wouldn't find the shadowc image, wouldn't load it...then would continue about its business as normal. then you can just use the create shadow c application and it will take care of it for you. (somebody with more info on nkpatcher could perhaps tell us more about that though?)

either way, if you are loading a dash from c and your xbox loaded a shadowc image that doesn't have your dashboard on it...you are going to need to get rid of that shadowc.img in order to get your xbox to work. otherwise it's simply not going to boot and you're stuck.

basically nkpatcher is compiled to load shadowc from somewhere, and it will always attempt to load it from there, regardless of whether you have created a shadowc or not. by default, it is from the E drive. basically what would happen was that you'd boot your xbox, it would use the real c to run nkpatcher (everything going fine) then it would switch your c drive with the shadowc drive. it would THEN try to load the dashboard from C, and since it wasn't there, it would crap out. reformatting the C drive wasn't doing anything because the C drive was working fine, it was the shadowc.img file that had the problem, and you couldn't touch that by formatting C with xboxhdm (because the image file was on E). make sense? i can't really explain it any better than that... and if you recompile nkpatcher (or hex edit it? i don't even know if that's possible but whatever) to look for shadowc in a different place, then it would only look there and not in E.

*SIGH* i still get a kick out of people not believing me...do i have stupid written on my forehead? on second though, don't answer that...

i was booting my xbox hdd from xboxhdm on my pc and formatting c.  so nkpatcher was not being loaded, thus virtual c was not loaded.  the problem was the nkpatcher i was restoring on my actual c was looking for shadowc.img in e:/shadowc/shadowc.img, which i did have but didn't use before.

after i deleted e:/shadowc.img the vitual c couldn't be loaded, and the dash on the actual c was loaded

as for replacing the nkpatcher, did you make sure to sign the new one with xbedump? (habibi key) if not, that would spit out an error 21

ive been using 'nkpatcheredit' (i think).  it compiles and signs

through my reading of anything to do with nkpatcher, i read something about dualboot.xbe.  i wasn't sure but i think it comes with ltools?

anyway i read you can have one dash loaded with tray open and another with the tray closed.

can this be used on a softmod?

The dualboot that came with ltools is fairly specialized for ltools' setup..  For a more generic version follow the link in krayzie's sig and compile the b64 encoding..

i extracted the b.64 code and ended up with dualboot2.tar.   is this dualboot.xbe?  do i have to sign it?
