Title: Retail Game Boots Before Kernal Patcher
Post by: anjilslaire on January 31, 2005, 07:01:00 PM
No. If a dvd is in the xbox when it boots, the kernel patcher/bios loader will no be loaded. This is correct. Therefore the xbox will be in a retail state bios/kernel-wise and will NOT result in a ban if the eeprom/hard drive are married correctly. THat's the point of a cold boot.

Or, you could wait like 10 more seconds and put the game in after the exploit loads. blink.gif

The only point of cold booting a game on a softmodded Xbox is if you're trying to leave it in a retail state for Live. Otherwise, there's no way to fix this without a modchip/tsop flash.

and messing with the shadow eeprom will accomplish nothing because that only gets loaded AFTER the exploit triggers and the kernel is patched.

the only way to prevent any games from booting before the mod takes place is to zero out the game region of your REAL eeprom which is REALLY dangerous unless you know exactly what you're doing...

You would have to edit the actual eeprom, not the virtual eeprom. The virtual eeprom is not initiated untill after Nkpatcher starts.

I actually thought about making a tut on zeroing the language ID in the eeprom but I figured it will probably do more harm then good with some people and we all know wo gets the blame when something went wrong.

I didnt think that we had to make it 100% idiotproof, hell I didnt think anything could be 100% idiotproof.

I know people dont take the time to look, and read, so they just post, and wait for someone to tell them the complete way to do it.

When I first came to this board, I didnt know shit, still dont know shit, but thats why I keep coming back, so that I can learn new shit.

i concur.

there is always stuff to learn. i have been here for like 9 months now, i still make n00bish posts occasionally (nowhere near as much as when i joined, damn i was a n00b back then!!!! search if you dont believe me).

but even i knew what to and what not to do. some things just require a little common sense.

Is editing the eeprom that dangerous?

yeah, it's just changing one value to another....however if you change the wrong values then your xbox is as close to being dead as it can possibly get without being like....sledge hammer to the top of the case repeatedly dead. you'd need to know a decent amount about modchips and such to recover from that.

overall, i'd say a good rule of thumb is that if you have less than a thousand posts....you shouldn't be screwing around with your real eeprom.

*looks left* i'm not going to be doing that anytime soon!

To sum this up:

A softmod boots from retail bios at all time.
A retail bios always boots from dvd first.
A sofmod only kicks in when u boot from HD.

Thus u need to edit your bios to boot from HD first. Witch means Tsop flash and no need for a softmod.

OR

U need to edit the EEPROM so it won't boot games directly.

So i would say unplugging the cable to ur network seems the best/safest way here.

What I do is just boot from the eject button. By the time I get the game into the drive the dash is already loaded.

even when after waiting for the drive to check for a game disc (i.e the vibrating noise you hear) placing the game disc in the drive will still result in nkpatcher not being loaded, as i think the xbox checks the drive again if the eject tray is closed.

well it does on mine anyway.

perhaps it is just nkpatcher then.

though it stays at the flubber screen while the disc is going in and being checked, probably just nkpatcher checking the drive again.

when it goes to that big X screen, doesn't that mean it's looking for a dashboard.....and then when the "MS" appears underneath it, that means it's found one. theoretically wouldn't that be the exact moment when the exploit was triggered and nkpatcher was run? just a thought....pretty useless....but i figured i'd throw it out there.
