A few people seem confused by this.
The M$ Dash is more than just the xboxdash.xbe - it also required all it's support files in the dashdata.???? folder, along with its fonts. The dashdata.???? must also be the right one for the xboxdash.xbe.
Because the the filename C:\xboxdash,xbe and the C:\fonts folder are already used by UXE - you need to rename them both.
HexEdit the renamed original dashboard XBE (MSxboxdash.xbe) to look for
its fonts elsewhere (e.g. c:\f0nts, or c:\font5, etc.).
Then re-sign the hexed XBE with xbedump.
So you need all of
C:\MSxboxdash.xbe
C:\f0nts
C:\dashdata.????????
in order for the M$ Dashboard to run.

Your right, i see what your getting at, one thing I have realized is that 95% of the tutorial are written by people who are strictly followly a recipe, if you will, and it seems that the the fundamental understanding of the flow of the code, is often mis-understood, They show you how, but don't tell you why,.
For me, I continuosly experiment, removing this, adding that, to try and get a smeak peek, at the core relationship, between the files, I must of seen that green screen over 100 times, in the last week, But, this helps me track the movents of the code, i would love to understand how to get the de-bug mode working, to where where the failures stem from,
There are brilliant people here, and this is what I need to know,
Thankyou Ped,
I found out in my journiys, that also you can copy a whole system director (c:) from one machine to another, and it works,.
Again, I forgot to put back in the dashdata folder, so thankyou,
So as long as the dash.xbe is from that dash data folder, everything will work,\
I will try it soon, but It is getting closer and closer, it is a slow and sometimes scary experience blindly back-engineering the software, but within a few tries, the link to the dsh has gone from error 5 to 21, to reseting the dash, to seeing the dash flick on for a second, then reset, so i feel thast i am close,
Thankyou for the last piece,.
It completes what i wanted to achieve,.,
I can now have cd with a complete modded system, that links to the dash, that I can install on any machine, in a few minutes without any pc intervention,
I know I am just a little fish at the moment, but with help like this, and the hdm (ltools) package, the xbox answer to me know,.\
-Bought a dula dvd burner today, and again the learning curves sting was sorely felt, damn xiso, combined with a dvdrw, just wouldn't f'n burn,
YET, B)
cheers
truxton
I probably have to heck a few finer points later,
My things to do list is to
1) understand how to direct fonts to folder,
2) and understamd signing
Have a great night/day
trux

People should be forced to read this. :)
