Title: Assistance In Choosing Version?
Post by: RiceCake on December 04, 2004, 05:51:00 PM
5838?

Well this is a v1.6 Xbox. If your in North America, UDE2 will work.

UXE however is a newer exploit.

And if I have one word of advice to not wasting $200 bucks - backup your EEPROM to multiple PC's and media and don't mess with any PAL/NTSC or EEPROM settings in programs smile.gif.

And also, i connected to #xbins on efnet and downloaded the zip "ude2-complete.bz2" and opened it in winrar, and reading the readme it says
"Install instructions:

1. Gain access to the Xbox hard drive

2. Backup (optional) contents of Xbox's current C drive to PC

3. Erase contents of Xbox's C drive

4. Copy contents from ude2-updatefonts folder to the Xbox's C drive (Try 71 first)

5. Cold boot Xbox with no disk in dvd tray"

Is that ALL i need to do... or are there some steps that i need to take to ensure UDE2 will work on my xbox. Thanks again!

I wouldn't delete the files in c because what if you want to use it later to watch dvd or something.  What I suggest is rename the fonts folder to f0nts and rename xboxdash.xbe to xbodash.bak and then copy the files from that package to your xbox c.  Also, if you are moding, why not get the newest exploit, uxe.  There is no advantage if your are ntsc user but hey, why not.  you get the eeprom from running the backup option in evox or any application that can get you the eeprom.

Well i just went to #xbins and downloaded the archive, seemed DAMN simple to install on my xbox, not 100 steps like most tutorials, and second, u backup the EEPROM after doing the exploit? Also, do u need to ftp into the xbox using UDE2, or can u just do it during the hot swap? Because from what i understand, by doing UDE2, u just
1. hot swap
2. Backup using HDDRIVER (i think?)
3. Rename fonts -> f0nts, and xboxdash.xbe to xboxdash.bak (Backup purposes)
4. Copy contents from archive over to partition 1 of xbox harddrive (using hddriver)
5. Replace Hard drive
6. Cold boot
7. Backup eeprom in the evox dash (i'm guessing it's an option?)
8. Done smile.gif

*Go to xbin and download Uxe package (I saw it there a few hours ago under exploit).
*extract the files to your c folder in xlinux/xboxhdm
*create the iso
*burn the iso
*hotswap and run xbrowser
*go to the xbox c partition and rename xboxdash.xbe to xboxdash.bak and fonts folder to f0nts
*Go to your c folder in your cd then copy the files/folder in your cd c folder to your xbox c partition. Double check to make sure the files are all there (check the fonts folder too etc...)
*shutdown and have fun

In the end, your xbox c root should AT LEAST have the followings:

fonts =>folder
****skin
****bert-generic.xtf
****ernie.xtf
****evox.ini
****ex.xbe
****nkpatcher.xbe

xboxdash.xbe

http://forums.xbox-s...dpost&p=1987733

go to that link (toward the bottom) for a tutorial on how to rename and copy using xbrowser.

I think i'm going to use the HDDDRIVER instead of xboxhdm... it seems simpler to tell you the truth.  Do i need to backup the ENTIRE xbox harddrive? and how do you backup the eeprom key?

Cheers

don't come here and ask how to fix your problem if you use hhdriver (just a friendly suggestion)

hddriver or xboxhdm can't backup your eeprom.  eeprom is a chip on your xbox motherboard but program like evox and configmagic can dump the info in the chip to a file.  Then you can download the file/eeprom.bin to your computer.  In another word, don't expect to find your eeprom in a retail hd.

Is hddriver THAT risky? well it's just reading throught the tutorials for xboxhdm, it seems extremly complicated compared to the simplicity of hddriver. And do you backup your eeprom after you softmod it, so i would say... extract all my uxe files over to the xbox hd, then run the backup in evox, then transfer it to my pc via ftp?

you are lucky if hddriver run.  if hddriver run, you are lucky if it doesn't give you a bunch of errors.  you are even luckier if you can open your c partition.  etc... anyway, it is very buggy.  xboxhdm is a breeze when you use the xbrowser (semi graphic interface) to manipulate the files.    Anyway, hhdriver was one of the first program that was written to access files on your xbox hd.  Then come xlinux with command line and become xlinux with xbrowser (xboxhdm).

that's correct, you get the eeprom after you moded it because you can't run evox unless you mod your xbox first.

Alright apple you seem to be helping alot! things are becoming much more clear... so this xboxhdm, from what i understand (which isn't much, i haven't researched much about it), is you burn it onto a CD-R.. restart your computer, with the burned image in your cd-drive (on the pc, not xbox), then it is a dos interface? answering questions using the 1-10 buttons? If i decide to use xboxhdm, where would i connect the unlocked xbox hd when i'm hotswapping? Thanks a lot, love the quick replys i've been getting...

for xboxhdm to automatically mount your xbox hd, xbox hd needs to be connected as primary master.  Also, read the tutorial/readme that come with xboxhdm to have a general idea.  Here is the general concept if you want to use the uxe package at xbins.  extract the uxe files from xbins to the C folder in xlinux (a folder that you will get after you extracted the files from xboxhdm).  Run the create iso bat to create the iso.  Burn the iso file using "burn image option".  Boot your xboxhdm cd.  hotswap, select option2 and type enter.  then xbrowser follow by enter key.  Then

In the end, your xbox c root should AT LEAST have the followings:

fonts =>folder
****skin
****bert-generic.xtf
****ernie.xtf
****evox.ini
****ex.xbe
****nkpatcher.xbe

xboxdash.xbe

Xboxhdm is the best.. While you could use UXE (more for pal users) i would use UDE2 which is made for xboxhdm that what you don't have to worrie about copying files over backing up stuff things like that..  It will work fine with the 5838 kernal.  Plus it's great to have if you want to mod your friends xbox..

Also your going to need evox. Get slayers 2.6 copy C E to /linux/C and E.. If you want more apps check out xbins and copy those to /linux/E/apps/. Download UDE and place that under linux as well.

After you burn the cd you need to get your xbox ready to hotswap.
Now some PC's are diffrent.. Mine works best if my bios doesn't detect the hdd.. So what i do is unplug everything excpet the cd rom. Then i unplug my keyboard and power on my pc.. What this does is after bios loads it askes me to plug in my keyboard and press F8. I plug my keyboard in and wait for the xbox to boot.. Once you see the MS logo quickly unplug the ide cable and plug it in to the free one on your pc. Then press F8

You should now see the XBOXHDM screen.. Choose 2..

If you see errors when it loads you diddn't hotswap right and you need to try it again.
If you don't get any errors then type xboxhdm and it will load. Choose option 1

WARNING all data from your xbox will be lost meaning saved games music everything GONE!

It will ask you copy from C and from E. Since your xbox is a 1.6 you only have 8 gig's so you can't have a F.

Once it's all done it will take you back out to the xboxhdm screen press 8 and hit enter..

Then type UDE -UDE2 that will install ude.. Read make sure everything is for a 1.6 or 5838 bios once complete power off pc power off xbox and reboot evox should load.. Then goto settings Back up. Then set your xbox for DHCP and make sure that the default gateway is blank save and reboot.

With your pc ftp in to your xbox under E/Dashboard/Backup you should see all your files eeprom.bin alot of things download that data.. DON"T LOSE THAT!

If you ever want to upgrade your hdd you have the eeprom your set .. Good luck.

If you just want evox running UDE will do the trick Slayers will give you your M$Dash if you want it.. I would recommend it.. Always good to have around plus it has all the apps included which is really nice as well.

Do the hotswap like i said the rest is just a myth.. Waiting does nothing.. ..  Also if you want to do UXE that goes in to /linux/C

If you want to use UDE2 place that in just linux

UDE will have an auto installer with choices while UXE is manual (more chance for screw ups)

To make it more clear.. my xboxhdm C directory reads as follows...
CODE

      \xboxhdm\linux\C\
                           => |       |\fonts\
                                |                      skin\
                                |                 |            Project Mayhem\
                                |                 | bert-generic.xtf
                                |                 | ernie.xtf
                                |                 | evox.ini
                                |                 | ex.xbe
                                |                 | nkpatcher.xbe
                                |
                                  xboxdash.xbe

Yup it should for UXE.. I would sujust you do UDE 2 though really..

I think what i will do... is first just get UXE working, which is my MAIN goal, then once i can get into evox, i will make the eeprom and what not backups, and transfer them over to my computer via ftp, burn them, put on floppy, email them etc etc... then if i find i need the original dash back, i will install slayers... does that sound like a safe plan?

-Ian

Yes sounds good.. Really doesn't matter if you use UXE or UDE unless you have a pal then UXE is your choice!

I used the ude2-complete.bz2 without deleting stuff but renaming it.  It works great on my 1.6 box, not sure if its a 1.6b since I havent had to take out the dvd drive and hence have not seen the memory.

I have also upgraded to a larger hard drive (120g) using xboxhdm which worked like a charm.  I used the 007 exploit to get to the drive ($30 for memory card and used copy of 007 in gamestop)  It was the path I was most comfortable with as hotswapping makes me nervous.

The only thing Im not sure of how to do is access the msdash.  I move the xbox between locations and one of those has an hd tv/dd51 so you need to access the dash to enable 480p/720p and dolby digital.

I have the slayers disk, can someone walk me through what specifically I have to copy over and to where to access the msdash from the evox menu?

Thanks for your help.
