Title: Yet Another Xbox Hd Tools
Post by: chimpanzee on August 24, 2004, 07:57:00 PM
Found at http://www.geocities.com/bononochimpanzee

This one allows you to upgrade your HD in place.

The difference between this and ldot's xboxhdm is that his run on PC, mine run on Xbox.

Mine is designed for people who are :

1. extremely rich and runs Mac
2. extremely poor who doesn't have a burner nor a PC(I am using a 5 years old notebook)
3. extremely lazy

Now people said that hotswap/hotplug may have the remote possibility of damaging your IDE device as it is not designed for such activities so if you are paranoid and do have a PC, play safe and use xboxhdm.

EDIT: thanks for ipodder2003 for hosting the file, the package can also be found here
http://jono.forbiddenvoid.com/files/chimp26.zip , though there is no instruction but it should be pretty easy to follow

It works on my 1.1 Xbox though I can't say for sure if there are bugs that I have missed(hopefully not as I have tested it in a number of 'dry run' scenario) :-)

BTW, you can try out the cloning even you don't do the swap. It just dump the data from the HD to a black hole, no harm done. Of course,  you cannot do the lock/unlock as I hardcoded it to only do it for the secondary harddisk though if you know linux script, you can make modication to it and try that on the master HD.

Just popped in after weeks of absence...

Nice job on these packages (linux UDE installer and HD tool). Just had a look at the scripts and tools included. Development is good, but a little credit would have been nice  wink.gif

Another difference : Your tool is purely a HDD upgrade tool. Since you use the 2.6 kernel you cannot access the fatx filesystem. Xboxhdm can also be used as a rescue disc.

Nice job on the xpad driver and linux loader. I'd like to make use of those in the future.

ah, sorry.

Since I seldom care about credit, I didn't pay too much attention to that either :-P

Actually, I hope that you and a number of other authors who have created those executables/xbes would include some copyright material into the source so at least people running it would notice that.

I have no intention to take credit, just lazy.

As for rescue, it is basically self explained as if I cannot boot up Xbox, there is no way I can run anything on it :-)

Better to get your files hosted at the "usual places"

As "geocities" has shut down your site, due to too much
users accessing the files, going over their allowed fixed
"bandwidth" for a general free web site.

But the utility does like very good.

geocities is my last resort as freewebs.com doesn't allows me to up load file > 750K and usual place are not too keen on hosting my stuff too, after all, I ain't one of those fame characters like ldots :-)

my parents won't let me take apart the computer, so i can't use xboxhdm. and i fucked up one of my xbox, cause i'm stuck in a clock loop, so if i could use xboxhdm on my xbox, that would be great! This is a good step to making xbox HDD recovery, cloning, and modifying self contained! Good job!

I was in the same boat as you which was why I made these tools. The only difference is that I have well passed the age of parental control, and that I am only poor and don't have a PC :-)

are you planning to make this tool for Splinter Cell and 007: AUF?
Title: Yet Another Xbox Hd Tools
Post by: chimpanzee on September 05, 2004, 06:05:00 PM
no, I have no space to host it.

However, making one for yourself is pretty easy. Just get the 007/SC game save from somewhere else and copy over my files and it is done.

My programs don't care where you launch it from, it can be any game save or even just from Evox, or on a DVD.

Apologies if this is an obvious question but it is late and im extremely tired!

If my xbox is already softmodded with ltools mechassault and I wish to upgrade the hd, do I :-

Put the second tool from your page on a memory card, set up the two hard drives with power and run the gamesave from memory card and follow the menu/instructions?

I guess what im asking is, do I need your UDE installer or can I run the hdclone with an already installed softmod?!

Thanks anyway as the idea behind it is great!

Gamesave exploits must be run from the HDD (copy the gamesave to your harddrive first). You cannot launch apps from a memory card.

As for installing the softmod on the new HDD, well you can just copy the UDE files from one HDD to another, so you don't need to use his UDE installer, but if cloning it doesn't work, then go ahead and just try his UDE installer.

since you already softmod your box, you just need to ftp the essential files in my hdtools zip file to Xbox and launch it from say EVOX. No need of the installer or a memory card. The memory card is just a way to get the file onto your box.

Treat both of my tools as "Xbox applications" which can be launched from one of the following :

1. game save(put them in the directory of the game save of your choice)
2. E:\apps\whatever
3. DVD

I only package for MechAssault because that is what I have and the most popular, IMO.

Thanks for the quick reply.

What im saying is that the new hd wont have anything on it.

The "new" or "chimps" mechassault save is put on xbox hd, both hd's are then plugged in and the hack run from mechassault.  This will be the new hack which will then let me clone the origional hd that has ltools UDE on, over to the new larger hd?

Does that make sense?!

my installer is for linux only and most people will find it 'useless' thought ;-)

The only thing that my installer has which ldots' doesn't(he did it for safety sake) is the game region change option. You can switch the game region from one of the menu option.

well, just just run my "apps" or "hacks" depending on how you launch it and follow the simple instructions which will copy everything of your existing HD to the new one. Then just lock the new one, again follow the menu. After that, exchange the HD, put the old one in a locked safe and you are done.

Your new HD can be one straight from a sealed bag, no need to do anything to it on a PC or whatever. That is the whole idea behind the tools, make it simple and easy to upgrade, anyone knows how to open the box should be able to do it by just from the menu.

What about the video display drivers from GENTOOX, don't they work on v1.6

This would be the best tool, once v1.6 video works, as it would remove the need of any PC, as what is the point if I need to TELNET from a PC. Is there an TELNET app for an XBOX, so I can use a second XBOX running the APP?

Hmm, just random thoughts.

Are you sure the "LOCKING" part works on the v1.6 with your package, I know the first XBOXHDM had problems until the most recent version v1.9

And another question, is it safe to LOCK the new drive while running your package with the old XBOX original hard drive still plugged in.
Title: Yet Another Xbox Hd Tools
Post by: forthex on September 06, 2004, 12:27:00 PM
telnet-ing doesn't require any special program. just open up a DOS command prompt. Just go to "Start", then "Run", then type in "cmd.exe".

Now, type in (without the quotes), "Telnet (your xbox's IP address)"

The menu should be the same if you used the program from the xbox, so the process should be the same. Correct me if i'm wrong, chimp.

I know you don't need any program to TELNET on a PC. I remember the days before the WEB when almost the whole INTERNET was TELNET sites.

What I was wondering if I DIDN'T HAVE ACCESS TO A PC, if I could use an APP on a SECOND XBOX to do the TELNETing.

I guess if the SECOND XBOX had LINUX installed I could use it instead of the PC.

The best way will be to get the VIDEO DISPLAY working on the v1.6 thru LINUX,
then we would be all set with one of the best new tools.

I have no idea what gentoox used for 1.6, I only use the latest kernel patch from xbox-linux. I have no idea why it still doesn't work even though they said it should be find on standard composite box.

While telnet from a PC seems to be making the whole thing ridiculous, I am one who only use notebook so xboxhdm is still of no use to me but telnet is easy.

As for locking, yes I have waited till ldots fix the new 1.6 EEPROM decrypt so the locking should work(I don't have a 1.6 to test but the coding is there).

And yes, it is safe to lock the new drive while the old one is in, the whole tools was for my own use to upgrade my own HD.

xboxhdm 1.9 should lock 1.6 Xbox correctly or you may fail with my tools as well as the same program/codes are used.

bump easiest way to clone hd
Title: Yet Another Xbox Hd Tools
Post by: chimpanzee on September 13, 2004, 09:15:00 PM
Because it doesn't see one.

Note because of the incompability among various partition schemes between linux and hacked BIOS(unfortunate but have to cope with), I can only use one scheme i.e. everything after E: is F: and > 137G is G:. Beside, both must be formatted to FATX.

Now if your original HD is not using this scheme, I would advice you just do a raw clone. The choice provided is really for those cases when one just want to dup C: and E:.

The left joystick is the "space bar", press the center of it.

of course, you can always telnet into it and do it from your PC/MAC/notebook, the menu is exactly the same. login/password : root/xbox.
Title: Yet Another Xbox Hd Tools
Post by: chimpanzee on September 13, 2004, 09:54:00 PM
This is no difference from ghost on PC. So if you have some partition scheme, it should work as the extra space would just be 'unused' as it is on PC. Just create a new partition on this extra space and it will become G:, H: or whatever.

Now don't expect to 'extend' existing one as there is no such thing for FATX. May be better to just backup the files and restore.

Go to Radio Shack and tell them that you need a splitter cable (cord) for a hard drive power plug.  That's where I got mine and it cost just over $5.  I think they only come one way, but make sure it has one female and two make ends.

I'll be all set if I can figure out how to lock my v1.6 upgraded hard drive, or if I can figure out how to use Telnet.

the xbox I set is ip:192.168.0.3/24
userid/password : root/xbox

You just set your machine to the same subnet and it should be fine. Also, if you have a router setup in your LAN, the box also acquire one ip through DHCP. You need to find out what it is though. Just ping around.

I followed the menu from top to bottom, just like it said, but after I finished and connected the newly upgraded drive, the xbox gave an error 5 (HDD not locked) error code.  I followed thorugh the entire thing, and selected the generate using motherboard to find the hdd key, eeprom and stuff, and then locked it.  Then i did number 4, unlock slave drive, then number 5, disable security on slave drive.  Then i unplugged the old xbox drive (it was a stock one) and connected up the new one.  It booted, played the splash screen, then switched to an error 5 "your xbox needs servicing" screen.  I went back, connected everything again like i was starting over, and selected "lock slave drive" but it still had no effect.

Any help on how to solve this would be greatly appreaciated.

I am confused.

Just select lock the slave drive(assuming it is the new drive) then switched off and swap the HD(and also connect back the DVD) is all you need. You don't need to touch the original drive.

When you select 1 to scan for HD, it gives you some info about which is master, which is slave.

thanks for the hosting and sorry for the confusing. I put the menu in a way that I can do the unlock(to the original if I want) but that doesn't mean it is needed, sorry for the wrong impression.

It is a Maxtor actually biggrin.gif  model 4R120L0 to be precise.

As for the hosting, it is quite stable, It's been up for a few months now without problems, so it should be fine.  I can host it for as long as you need or want.

Thanks again smile.gif

It takes very long, in fact. Could be because the IDE cable used or whatever. May be there is something that can be tuned but since I only do it from 8G to a new one, I didn't pay too much attention to it.

If you signed on to XBL with the orginal hard drive yes.. If you've yet to sign on to XBL with your xbox then no..

You can fix this by buying an eeprom this will marry that eeprom and the new hard drive allowing you to sign on with a bigger hdd.

unsure.gif I hate to ask but I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.  I'll try to give as much detail as I can so I can get the best help.

1.6B XBOX
X3 mod chip/1959 & 3209 bios
Used SofMod Auto-Installer Deluxe 2.0
Orginal HHD
Another Segate from another XB HD
EVOX (one came with SofMod Auto... 2.0)
Y power splitter

With my mod in DISABLE Mode, I did the SofMod.  I then load the CHIMP2.6 folder to my XBOX and used EVOX to launch it.  According to Chimp's website Instructions and info from here I was able to run the program thru Telnet.  I did the clone and took about 10mins.  I swap the drives and when I turn on XB in Disable Mode I get ERROR 5.  I'm a little confused on the hotswap issue.  I'm suppose to swap the DVD with the New HDD.  When I'm I suppose to do this and what is the trick.  Also, I assume that the new HDD should be on cable select just like the master one.

Need some help PLEASE because the wife and kids are made at me for spending more time with XB then them. sad.gif

Me again.  Update to my issue.  I used SodMod Deluxe Installer to mod orginal HD.  Used Chimp2.6 to clone hard drive.  When I use the clone HD I get the #5 Error.  I tried every option under Chimp2.6 to lock slave HD but it won't.  I did use the xboxhdm later to lock the clone HD and work great.  I only question is if the chimp2.6 was made so you didn't need a PC (which I did because xbox is 1.6)  to make a copy of an HD work with the XBOX then what do i need to do to get the hard drive to work.

Can some one walk me through the process on a 1.6 via telnet.
my xbox pulls 192.168.1.101 on evox
then i run the chimp app I get a green screen. I know so far this is normal, next i try to telnet 192.168.1.101 from the command prompt  but the connection times out. I saw reference to a user and pass of root:xbox, how would I enter this.
Any help would be appreciated.

as far as i know and see.. Chimps tool isn't using DHCP (at least i didn't see it working). The default ip is
192.168.0.3

so if your running a 192.168.1.1 block of address your going to need to change that block to match 192.168.0.1 block.. If you happen to have an extra ethernet card you could manually yet your PC's ip address to 192.168.0.1 then it should be cake work telneting it..

I've got a NTSC 1.6 xbox softmoded with ltools 1.8rc1 MA.  I'm in the middle of upgrading the hard drive using chimp26 since I've got a laptop.  Everything seems to have gone OK so far, but when I get to the lock slave HDD step my HDD password from EEPROM seems suspect.  The first 40 hex digits appear legit, but the last 24 are all zero.    I believe I've read elsewhere that having zeros at the end of the password means a bad EEPROM read.

Right now I'm not going to lock my HDD, although I need to lock it to boot with the new drive since I've got  a softmodded box.  Does anyone have suggestions on how to lock this drive?

Thanks.

Since I posted last I used my original evox backup of the original (unmodded) box with the eeprom.bin.  I then ftp'ed that eeprom to /tmp in the chimp26 installer and dropped to shell.  I figured out that /initrd/bin/hdtool2 was what I wanted, so I did
/initrd/bin/hdtool2 -e /tmp/eeprom.bin -d /dev/hdb -o UNLOCK
(since doing UNLOCK first is how chimp's lockhdb script displays the password for you to approve).  I got the same password as chimp's script displayed.

Then I followed your advice and took the xbox key and used that (using -k), also getting the same password.

At this point I think somethings going wrong with my xbox and the linux eeprom tools.   Next I'll use config magic to get another eeprom backup and try using that.

Thanks.

A few weeks ago, Feb 12th or 19th maybe?  From a Wal-Mart that had been out of stock the week prior.

I have now backed up the eeprom with configmagic-final and diff reports that the two eeproms I have differ, although the hd password and key for the stock drive reported by ltools and config magic are the same.

I'm going to try using that eeprom to see if it generates a better password.

evox can grab the correct eeprom from a v1.6 box, but your using xboxhdm or liveinof you must use there latest versions of those programs to correctly generate the correct key.

Success!  I was just so scared of bricking a new 300GB hard drive that I didn't trust the tool since I had read so many horror stories about bad HDD passwords.  It worked, all from the telnet interface on my 1.6(b?) xbox.

What made me realize I should just trust the scripts was when I triple checked my original HDD password.  It was only 40 digits long.  The 24 trailing zeroes using this tool confused me, but the first 40 digits were the important ones.

Thanks for all your help!

the hdtool also locks it with a master password so even things went wrong, you can redo it though doing in on the Xbox remove the most probable cause of error, typo of those random characters ;-)

I've got a 1.6 softmodded with Evox using UXE.  I FTPed all the files from the "...UDATA\4d530017\62D648EBF155" folder into E:\Apps\Chimptools folder on my Xbox.  I then tried to telnet before connecting any drives to see how it would work (since I've never used telnet before etc.).  It connected just fine (says RemoteX Telnet Server V1.1) to the Xbox's C:\ drive , but the only command that seems to work is "dir"  When I try anything else (cd, e:, f: etc) it says "Unknown Command "xxxx"" (xxxx being whatever command).

What am I doing wrong?  I tried logging in using root:xbox and xbox:xbox (separately, of course) as my user/pass, but then it doesn't even log in (note, xbox:xbox is what I use for FTP).

i have version 1.2
so is this all i do
-
first, unrar chimps tool. you will see a folder called UDATA. open it. now you will see a folder called 4d530017. open it. now open 62D648EBF155. take the contents of the folder and put it in udata. so in the udata folder there will be 4d530017 and a bunch of files including default.xbe.put the udata folder in your apps menu.

now, open the xbox.take a computer(not monitor or anything else needed) and plug it in next to your xbox. plug your computer's hd's power cable into the new hd. don't mess with it. now turn on your xbox. go to the apps folder on you'r dash. you will see the program.choose it. now, this is the part that seems scary, but it's not. unplug the ide cable from the dvd drive and plug it in to your new hd. turn on the computer, thus giving power to your new hd. now choose option 1 on the menu(you must do this first), it should tell you the specifications from your hd. make sure they're correct. now, the rest is up to you! have fun

I've seen this problem a lot, but can't seem to solve it...
I, too, have a v1.6 Xbox, and upon loading the Chimps program I get a garbled screen and then a completely green screen, along with an amber display light. I know that's all right so far, but from there I'm clueless. I've heard you have to telnet in...but I can't seem to do it. My Xbox's IP address is 192.168.1.103...it goes through a a router.

Now what I'm wondering is, is if I set my computer to oh say 192.168.0.2 and my xbox to a static 192.168.0.3, will I then be able to get through on the Telnet? What settings do I need to change? I'm simply trying to clone my ten gig into my new 60 gig, is all, and any help at all would be appreciated a lot!
Title: Yet Another Xbox Hd Tools
Post by: ibnuts on May 29, 2005, 08:38:00 PM
I don't know if it matters if you set the xbox's gateway to your PC's IP address.  I did that once and it worked.  But otherwise, it's not that difficult to change your IP address.  Go into your router's settings and look for the part that says "enable DHCP" etc.  Usually it'll have some part about a "range".. Just set that from 192.168.0.0-192.168.0.255.  Then when the settings have updated, find out your computer's IP address (either by going to command, then type ipconfig or through your router software), then turn on the XBOX and use that IP address in the "gateway" field within the system settings.  Reboot the XBOX, then, even if it doesn't say 192.168.0.3 at the loading screen (or wherever it says on your particular dash and skin), I'm pretty sure you're supposed to log in using that ip address and user|password root/xbox.  Type in telnet 192.168.0.3; then when it says user, type "root," then password "xbox"  Should work.  At one point, user or pass I'm not sure as it's been a while, you can't see what you're typing in, but it's still working.. Look elsewhere on the tread for anything else.

EDIT: as far as setting up the router, if you need extra help, check out this site and look under the part that says "Setting up a Static IP" under your particular make/model of router.

Good luck!

Ok, thanks to you guys I wa able to telnet into it. Still a a little garbled, but it was doable. However, from there, I didn't have much of a clue what to do, as there's no readme or anything on what to do from there. I hotswapped and scanned, I saw MNaxtor in the garbled mess somewhere so I'm assuming it recognized the new one. Then I tried Clone from master to slave, and it gaev me a mess, and a yes to continue. I just kept hitting enter O_o Cause I couldn't tell what was what. It eventually took me back to the begining screen. I thought I had hit no, but there's really no way to tell. So anyone want to tell me the steps AFTER you get into it?

Dear chimpanzee can update your tool to work with 1.6(B) xcalibur video chip?

Best regards.

the xbox I set is ip:192.168.0.3/24
userid/password : root/xbox

You just set your machine to the same subnet and it should be fine. Also, if you have a router setup in your LAN, the box also acquire one ip through DHCP. You need to find out what it is though. Just ping around.

I havent tried port 24.. I thought telneting was supposed to go through port 23?

I have a freshly soft moded xbox.

I am trying to add a new drive.. Ultra ATA 500 gig.

Ok I have edited my post because I have worked past my original issue.. however I wouldnt be a noob if I only got hung up on one thing...
.. I have set up a cable from  PC to XBOX  using the following settings
I set up the ips as follows

PC 192.168.0.6
xbox 192.168.0.5

I could ping xbox at .05 before running chimp
whoever once I ran Chimp the xbox was un pingable at both .5 and
.4 and .3 (where chimp is supposed to be)
You can imagine that I had no luck actually telneting in at this point.
I assume I have screwed up a setting on my xbox or I dont have the rest of the network set up ie netmask, default gateway, dns server. or something.. anyone feel like giving me a noobs setup for that..
I tried
netmask 255.255.255.0
default gateway 192.168.0.1
dns server 192.168.0.1

also tried
netmask 255.255.255.0
default gateway 0.0.0.0
dns server 0.0.0.0

I couldnt have been too far off as I could actually ping the xbox from my pc before I ran chimp....  then I would run chimp, get the screen freeze attempt to telnet in and it would sit .. sit .. then nothing.. no prompt for pwd or anything... Damn Im frustrated.... hope someone can help.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Documentation notes for Chimp26:

1. It is originally packaged with a Mechassault gamesave. If you can run unsigned code already, you need 4 files only from the package:
   a. default.xbe
   b. linuxboot.cfg
   c. vmlinuz
   d. initrd
Ftp the 4 files to a folder of your choice on E or F or G drive and run default.xbe.

2. Chimp26 is Linux based and the files appear to be derived from an earlier version of Xebian. As per normal boot process, after kernel boots, linuxrc is executed. There is a typo in inittab and this is only apparent if initrd can't be found in the same folder.

3. Linuxrc loads chimp and starts a telnet and ftp daemon. It tries to uses DHCP and if that fails, a hardcoded IP of 192.168.0.3 is used. This IP address is independent of Xbox's network settings and cannot be changed. If you have a Xbox 1.6, suggestion is to use crossover cable for a direct connection and set your PC's IP to the same subnet. If you have a nUSB keyboard, you will have keyboard access.

4. The bulk of the work is done in 3 shell scripts: chimp, cloneab, and lockhdb. xboxdumper is used to write the magic value of BRFR to the correct place to identify the target hard drive as a xbox drive. Originally it followed xboxhdm's approach of using dd to do that but this was later commented out and xboxdumper was used.

The relevant section of lockhdb is reproduced below , authorship belongs to Chimpanzee:

CODE

#!/bin/sh

REALOP="$1"
TARGET=/dev/hdb
PASSWORD_OPT=" -a "
PASSWORD_SRC="Motherboard"

if [ -z "$1" ]; then
echo "usage: $0 "
exit 1
fi

if [ "$2" != "" ]; then
pass=$(echo $2 | grep hdpass.txt)
eeprom=$(echo $2 | grep eeprom.bin)
hddkey=$(echo $2 | grep hddkey.txt)
if [ -e "$2" ]; then
if [ "$eeprom" != "" ]; then
PASSWORD_OPT="-e $2"
PASSWORD_SRC="$2"
elif [ "$pass" != "" ]; then
pass=$(cat $2)
[ -z "$pass" ] && echo "$2 empty" && exit 1
PASSWORD_OPT="-p $pass"
else
hddkey=$(cat $2)
[ -z "$hddkey" ] && echo "$2 empty" && exit 1
PASSWORD_OPT="-k $hddkey"
fi
PASSWORD_SRC="$2"
fi
fi

if [ -e $TARGET ]; then
hdtool2  $PASSWORD_OPT -d $TARGET -o unlock | head -n 11 > /tmp/abc.$$
info=$(cat /tmp/abc.$$)
if [ "$1" != "unlock" ]; then
dialog --defaultno --title "Password generated from $PASSWORD_SRC, choose Yes to $1" --yesno "$info" 15 75
case $? in
  0 ) lock="yes";;
esac
rm /tmp/abc.$$
clear
if  [ "$lock" != "" ]; then
if  [ "$hddkey" != "" ]; then
hdtool2 -d $TARGET $PASSWORD_OPT -o disable-pw > /tmp/pass.$$
[ "$1" != "disable-pw" ] && echo "y" | hdtool2 -d $TARGET $PASSWORD_OPT -o $REALOP >> /tmp/pass.$$
else
hdtool -d $TARGET $PASSWORD_OPT -o disable-pw > /tmp/pass.$$
[ "$1" != "disable-pw" ] && echo "y" | hdtool -d $TARGET $PASSWORD_OPT -o $REALOP >> /tmp/pass.$$
fi
dialog  --title "Done, Password used(generated from $PASSWORD_SRC),also in /tmp/pass.$$" --textbox /tmp/pass.$$ 15 75
clear
fi
else
dialog --title "$1 result - password generated from $PASSWORD_SRC" --msgbox "$info" 15 75
clear
fi
fi

As can be seen, the script can lock,unlock hdd and disable security from motherboard, eeprom file or hddkey file.

Clonead also supports selective cloning of partitions or drive to drive dumps. However it uses .67 convention of LBA48 (F and G drives) so .6 LBA48 (F drive only) users are better off using drive to drive dumps. Edit: Seems that .6 is supported.

http://forums.xbox-s...howtopic=716433.

A remake of chimp with the additional features:
1. Onscreen display on xbox version 1.6.
2. Status update during cloning process with ETA, throughput, elapsed time.
3. Unlocking with choice of master passwords.
4. Configurable network setting onscreen.
5. Backup of eeprom (and retrieval via ftp).
6. Understands the partition table created by xbpartitioner and hence handles extended partition cloning accordingly.
