Title: Almost Perfect Way To Soft-mod Your Box
Post by: ImagineMicro on July 27, 2004, 03:15:00 PM
Ok. So I spent all weekend trying to figure things out with this soft modding stuff. I wanted an easy way that will will work on 99% of all XBOXes. Something I can replicate as well. I think I have found it. Any of you vets, please correct me if I am wrong. This also has worked on a 1.6 XBOX, although I haven't been able to upgrade to a larger drive YET.

READ THIS THROUGH ONCE BEFORE TRYING IT!

THIS WON'T WORK on PAL or NTSC-J xboxes unless you edit your eeprom to region 1 I believe.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Things you will need.

1) FTP Access
Whether it is using a game save or something else. You need FTP access to the box.
2) metoo-m8pack-beta1
    Get this from usual spots.
3) UDE2 (just updatefonts60 and s1916928 patch)
    http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=245403

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FILES YOU CARE ABOUT

- From Meetoo
(boot.cfg, M8_LBA48_IGR_Q-06-BFM.bin, default.xbe)

- From updatefonts60
(scraps.xtf, bert_ate_ernie-generic.xtf <---- the one for NFL Fever folder)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1) Rename your xboxdash.xbe to oldxboxdash.xbe

2) If you have any font files inside the root of your C drive, rename the extension to .xft instead of .xtf.

3) Rename your fonts folder to f0nts. <--- replace o with a 0.

HERE COMES THE TRICKY PART

4) I am assuming you followed the instructions inside s1916928 patch. This is very important. You have to have the right update.xbe file in order for this to work. Once you have the right update.xbe file copy it over to the xbox c drive.

5) rename the update.xbe file now on your c drive to xboxdash.xbe

6) Create a folder on the c drive called fonts.

7) Copy over bert_ate_ernie-generic.xtf to this newly created fonts folder. You can use the one specifically made for you kernel, but I have not had any problems yet with the generic one.

8) Copy over scraps.xtf to this newly created fonts folder as well.

----- AT THIS POINT ------
Your xbox is soft modded and ready to load any habibi signed default.xbe file from the E drive. YES the E drive.
------------------------------

9) Copy boot.cfg, M8_LBA48_IGR_Q-06-BFM.bin, default.xbe from the Meetoo package over to the root of E drive.

----- AT THIS POINT ------
Your xbox is soft modded even more with Phoenix BOOT LOADER and is going to load an EVOX M8 BIOS for you.
------------------------------

10) Copy over any dashboard of your choosing to the C drive. It doesn't have to be signed. Just make sure it is called evoxdash.xbe.

11) OPTIONAL:   Hex edit C:\oldxboxdash.xbe (the original C:\xboxdash.xbe you renamed above), and Hex edit the 2 occurrences of "fonts\" to "f0nts\" (note the zero in place of the 'o'). "fonts" in Unicode is 66 00 6F 00 6E 00 74 00 73 00
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

That should do it. If it doesn't work. You can always reboot using a game save exploit in order to get FTP access again and undo any problems.

The reason this is so cool is because you are able to load any BIOS from the E drive. You don't have to use the one inside the Meetoo package. This is just a start. You can even edit it using the included evtool and make it boot from F. You can also add G drive support and what not. What I like is the fact it is M8 bios and it doesn't need you to fiddle around with RC4 keys and EEPROM keys. There are tutorials about upgrading your hard drive. Check those out as well.

Remember to note that it won't work on PAL or NTSC-J xboxes unless you edit your eeprom. Error 21 isn't a pretty sight  ph34r.gif

i like the colours of an error 21 screen, looks really nice and pretty and cool.  beerchug.gif
