Title: Matrix Wont Flash With Evox
Post by: nickgailloux on October 21, 2004, 12:52:00 AM
Hey All,

This is my first post, and I'm just getting into the scene, so let me say: You guys are awesome! So far I've mostly done TSOP flashes and I find it really easy.

I have an xbox that a friend did up for me. Its got a Matrix chip. The onboard TSOP is screwed as far as I know, and the box only works with a chip.

I need to flash the bios in the chip because I need a bios that supports LBA48 so I can use the entirety of my 200 gig hard drive. The chip is in mode 1, which as I understand, is the 256kb x 4 mode. I dont care what bank I flash. I just need to get the new bios in. I am planning on using the 4983.06 bios. I have Evox installed on the drive (I used NewHDEvox 1.4 to prepare the drive) and it boots and works well. I edited the evox.ini to include the menu options for working with all four banks, and I also added the ROM MD5 code for the bios I'm going to install. When I boot up Evox, I can go into the "Chameleon Mode 1" menu shows up and when I go into it, I am unable to select any option. Evox moves the slection cursor to the bottom of the list and I cant move it up.

Also, when I go into System Settings I dont have any of the info on the Matrix/Chameleon telling me what mode its in, etc. I thought that was a little odd, it's like Evox isnt realizing that I have the chip.

I think my evox.ini setup is fine, and that something else is preventing me from flashing.

Note that I dont have a programmer so i cant take the chip out and program it on my PC. Also, the chip doesnt have the so called "P and E" points for the power and eject buttons wired up. I really dont want to wire them up, but will if need be.

So, anyone have this problem, or now how I can get the bios flashed?

Thanks,

Nick.

Hate to say this but you chip in mode 1 is not flashable.  The mode 1 4 banks of 256k is for a chameleon mode chip your mode chip has to be in mode 4 where the light is orange blinking.  Then you will be able to flash your 1 bank of 256k.

I read that it had to be in mode 4 but I wasnt sure if that was credible. Ok, I tried that and again it didnt work. In the official Chameleon manual it says the "P and E" points have to be connected and you have to boot using the power button and hold it down for three seconds on boot. Is this how everyone else does it? Does this mean I am going to have to solder up the extra points?

Also, I dont think my chip has a light on it. Maybe its an older version. There is a sticker that says "v1.3". What positions should the DIP switches be in for mode 4 (Just to make sure)?

Matrix Wont Flash With Evox, I cant seem to flash the bios at all...

That is why I said you need int it mode 4.

Ok back to the chamelon modes you will need mode 1 {4 x 256k}

But with a chameleon I would check this fisrt.  Enought reading and I think I know it all.

Well honestly I don't know anything but I know where to find stuff is all I can say hehehe

Like I said, I'm new to the scene, so I didnt know there was a difference between a Matrix and Chameleon. I thought they were the same chip... sorry bout that.

Great link, maybe that was the problem. Unfortunatley, I got too busy today and decided to exchange the 200gig for a 120gig, and leave the bios as is. Problem solved :D

I know it was the easy way out but I sold the xbox and tomorrow I get to buy a brand-spankin-new one.

Thanks for your help though! :D
