Title: Hotswapping Tips
Post by: iLLNESS on December 29, 2003, 08:56:00 PM
most people think theyrwe xbox hdd isnt unlocked

but it unlocks soon as the dash is loaded

and is fine for a hotswap then

its all about your pc

some pcs bios's are very picky about when u plug it in
some dont care

if u get that ide detection screen pause it right before it detects anything

if it detects the xbox hdd and restarts u gotta hotswap again.. and pase the pc again

if it doesnt detect it it isnt locked

i dono
but i know its locked soon as dash loads

try another computer or if you're using hddriver, load up windows first before swapping. if using xlinux, swap when the picture of the guy loads up.

thanks...I have tried everything except xlinux because i am limited in what i can do because I have raid on my machine...

I can access the drive in liveinfo...I got the password....but it doesnt work for unlocking the drive, and the drive still isnt found by hdd driver....

isnt there a "package" of all the missing .dll's for hdd driver? i had it working once b4 but now i switched my os to xp pro instead of just xp (i also have debian linux on there...and win me..but anyways) and i cant get hdd driver to work for crap. ive tried like i dunno about 50 msvcrtd.dll's and none have worked, can anyone link or compile for me? i ALWAYS just unplugged the dvd drives yello wires and got the error message and hot swapped from that screen, while pc was paused b4 detecting drives and i never had a problem (well other that the fact that the drives image was 9 gigs and really hard to hexedit). thanks in advance

there's a fix for this but its complex. i would just use xlinux if i were you. even if you've never used linux its really easy to do. just read my xlinux tips.

WRONG! you can unlock your HD by loading a game, thats true BUT loading the dash alone unlocks the HD also! xbox must unlock the hd so that the dash can write to it (xboxdash needs HD access for copying saves from mem card to hard drive and ripping songs off CDs to the harddrive.) to do any of that stuff the drive needs to be unlocked. therefore, the drive is unlocked after the dash is loaded!

More importantly the hd has to be unlocked just to read any information off of it.
Hard drives are locked to individual Xboxes.  Thats why you just cant pull a hard drive
from any Xbox and throw it on another.  Once the hard drive is unlocked.  Information
can be pulled off and put on.  Think about it this way.  All the dashboard programs
that handle memory cards and the music files (The generic Xbox dashboard) reside on
the Hard drive.  If the drive is not unlocked, that dash would never load.

Ok, well here's some more tips:

#1 your drive is unlocked as soonas the MS logo appears, it just doesn't like t be swapped while transerring data, so just wait till everything has bootted up, about 10seconds is plenty

#2 run the hd power from your xbox, as long as the drive still has power it will not lock, you can reboot your pc numerous times. when it is first unlocked the drive is programmed to automatically lock when it powers down. for example, what i often do is hotswap in windows, if it doesn't work i just reboot, is the hotswap worked the time will still be unlocked when windows starts up again.

#3 sometimes windows will disable the ide cable when you try to htswap with windows running, if it doesn't work after a couple tries, try rebooting your pc and pausing it at some point, then hot swap and resume booting

#4 windows 2000 seems to work better sometimes, other times it's winXP, i have dual boot

#5 windows xp pro does not like to be hotswapped with windows running, but 2000 is ok

#6 always unplug your cd/dvd drives and use this IDE cable, it makes life much easier, trust me

#7 "scan for new hardware" is completely unnecessary, hotswap and launch hd driver, if it worked it'll be there

#8 if all else fails you can try detting your pc hd as slave, plug you xbox hd into the same ide cable and set your bios to boot from the slave.

#9 when you finally do get hddriver you might not see any folders, or maybe just one, sometimes you're lucky and can see them all. there tutorials on fixing this, it's easy.

this might sound complicated, but i've never ran into a hradrive i couldn't hotswap, 15minutes tops,

What i meant is if you wait for the recommended 5-10 min it is locked i have never tried it right away might be possible but on startup it has no reason to access hard drive after it is booted for 10 mins (locked) the halo way is quick and verified i recommend it

Thanks for replying fetz654...

So am I to assume that even though I don't see any drive letters that the System folder is the C: drive and the User Data folder is the E: drive?

I'll be doing the audio exploit so I shouldn't fubar the machine if it isn't the C: and E: drive, but would love to get some kind of confirmation before I start doing this.

once it is unlocked it is unlocked. it does not lock just because of inactivity in the dashboard. in order for the dash to load up the hd has to be unlocked. in order to load up any game the hd has to be unlocked (so that you can save). therefore, you can let the dash load or let a game load. EITHER WAY WORKS! dont say it doesnt work when it does.

Im writing to you while my xbox is on, and it's at the memory menu, and it's been more then 10 mins, I'm going to try to connect it to the computer as we speak, I'm sure i'm doing something wrong, or I shouldn't be doing this at all.. Also, I've tryed this, i started my xbox up first wait for a few when it's at the dashboard, i switched the plugg, and started up the computer, should I have done that, it says it detects the drive and shit, but then it just restarts when the scrolly bar comes up? Heres my new HD i'm putting in

I have a:

8MB Cache
7200rpm

I have a new version of the X-Box

I had problem with my 1.5 box cz all the tutorial says wait to 5-10 minute until the hd spins down but my hd never seems to spin down. Heres the method worked for me:

1. Insert a audio cd into ur xbox
2. Copy atleast 1 track into ur xbox hard drive
3. Now shut down ur xbox
4. start ur pc and hit [pause/break] key ur have hit the key as sooon as u power up ur pc so HD detection process dont start
5. start ur xbox and then go to music select the track u already ripped from ur audio cd
6. PLay it for 40-50secs(doesnt matter how long u play it)
7. Pause the song
8. Open unplug IDE cable from ur xbox hd and plug in ur pcs secondary IDE cabe ( ovbiously master slot)
9. Hit [SPACE] or [ENTER] whatever works for u to resume ur pcs bootup process
10. HDD_DRIVER should detect ur xbox hdd on physical drive 2

HOW YOU KNOW UR HD IS STILL UNLOCKED:

Computer will take more time to bootup than ur normal boot up time cz it tries to initialize locked HD, if ur hd is unlocked than computer should bootup normally.

The whole idea behind audio track is giving ppl some more time as long as that track is being played xbox is reading something from it and hd is unlocked.

And I want to downgrade  my dash cz the latest dash 5659.03 dont let me to install any exploits and thats why I need 4920 but I figured out a way to do it hot swapping and I will let u know when I do that tomorrow.

The best way I have found to hotswap is to just disconnect the IDE cable going to the dvd drive. It will error on the dvd drive but leave the harddrive unlocked. This way is explained in ldots tutorial on using xboxhdm. It always works for me!

Also, I believe that I have found an important discovery. I've been hotswapping while windows is running and it works on some computers, and not on others. The thing that I found is that the computers that have Nforce chipsets need to make sure that they don't have the Nvidia Sw IDE driver installed, b/c then hotswapping doesn't work. Uninstall the driver and you should be able to hotswap just fine in windows. I've tested this on two computers with the Nvidia chipsets and found this too be true.

I also recommend xboxhdm instead of any windows file manager like FatXplorer. It just works so much better!

Anyway, good luck!

In the xbox, disconnect the DVD and then when you recieve the error disconnect the hard drive.

in the pc use the primary master cable.

Also to aviod grounding issues, connect a ground wire between your PC's chassis, and your Xbox's Chassis via Alligator clips or something .

With help from (KINGROACH). XBOXHDM FOR DUMMIES v.1.6

What didn't work for me was loading win2k / windows 2000 on and old HDD which was FAT32 formatted. I got the drive to show up in the BIOS and in my device manager but it wouldn't mount to the desktop ... even tried to command line to it chdir /D d:/?

What worked for me was loading a song to the xbox hdd pulling the disk and then playing the song for about 20 secs. and hitting pause.

The Halo trick work for me as well .. I went to settings and changed colors of the guy and hit save then swapped. (worked first time!)

I used xboxhdm which allows you to create a folder to place your exploit in and then makes a bootable iso to boot off. You will know your disk is unlocked when you boot in to xboxhdm and see just text/ascii and maybe a short screen flash(no scrolling) on the monitor .... if you see a bunch off errors scroll through in text/ascii then it's not unlocked. I then hit option 1 (there are 4 options) then typed in "xbrowser" which brings up a simple menu screen (there is a pause in loading). Use tab and up and down arrows to navigate through command menu. There's a command menu at the bottom with numbers associated to move, copy, delete, etc. to access them you don't use your number key you need to use the F number keys (I thought the drive was locked again because I was using the number keys and not the F number keys). This allowed me to copy over the exploit.

What also helped me to hotswap the drive was to use MOLEX Y splitters as extensions & to remove the xbox HDD from the xbox and the DVD player for easy access and to avoid disturbing the HD (this apparently moves the reading heads to lock postion and consequently locks the hd). I also used MOLEX Y splitters as extensions from my PC for the CD/CDRW drive. I'll post pictures.

FYI: For safety I did ground the xbox and my PC case together to avoid possible voltage problems (read it in a tut or thread? Better safe than sorry I always say!)

I have the same problem:  the clock loop.  xbox-linux

In this case, the unlocking is a fine process.  The hdd seems to unlock right before the error screen and then locks when the error screen shows.  I found that it takes longer for the error screen to show if you have a game in the drive.  So, right before the error screen shows is when you will pull the IDE cable.  It is very tricky and needs to be timed perfectly (mine is around 7 seconds).

Can't seem to get the hotswap right...

+power on computer, press pause
+boot the xbox, wait a few minutes
+unplug the xbox ide cable to the drive
+plug the drive to ide cable to the primary ide cable on the computer
+press return (every single time, the dell won't recognize the drive and I have to reboot
+run xboxhd and then it says my hd is still locked

Am I missing something here? I have a Dell Dimension.. anyone try a hotswap with a Dimension before?

The hd is powered by the xbox.

I've hotswapped several xbox hd's flawlessly, but this last one refused to work.  It would never spin down!  I ripped a music track, played it, then tried the hotswap.  Worked!!

Dunno why, but it did!  (this is after 30-40 failed hotswap attempts)

(and maybe to be more specific on which package you used for modding)

But, since I'm a nice guy (well sometimes) I'll analyse your problem from your previous posts.

You have a 160GB drive that comes from a chipped xbox, not just a fresh new blank disk.

Now you have 2 chances :

1) The HDD is locked with the locking key from the chipped box.
- Use that xbox locking key (preferably generated from that Xbox eeprom.bin file) to unlock the drive
- Use the locking key from the softmodded xbox to lock it.
- All done

2) The HDD isn't locked at all (since it comes from a chipped box)
- Use the locking key (preferably generated from that Xbox eeprom.bin file) from the softmodded xbox to lock it.
- All done

Oh, and there are plenty ot tutorials, posts etc etc on this topic. Invest some time, keep your patience.

I have a quick question to anyone that can help me. Im using Xboxhdm and my xbox is a v.1.6b  i made the bootable cd and when i go through the steps it says to type softmod to softmod my xbox well its saying this. No xbox hard drive found on /dev/hda (primary master) This script assumes /dev/hda be the device to be used. Please Shut down your PC- connect your xbox drive to the primary master and try again!   Well i tried it maybe 30 times and thats all it says..  I know i have it hooked to the primary drive on my ide cables so can anyone help me???
thanks
JD

Into: I used hotswapping and the audio exploit to recently mod my v1.5 xbox. The problem I ran into was the hotswapping proccess itself. All the tutorials didn't really describe it well. Anyway, here are some tips that helped me with the hotswap:

Basic Hotswap method:
Plug in your power cord and video cord to the back of your xbox with no game in the DVD drive. Then, wait 5minutes for the xbox to load to the dashboard and then pull out the xbox IDE cable and plug in your PC IDE cable.

Tips:
1. Try not to shake the drive too much while hotswapping.
2. Try to do the hotswap quickly. (Have the PC's IDE cable in your hand while pulling out the xbox's IDE cable).
3. Just because the computer detects the drive (in bios or device manager) doesn't mean you did the hotswap right!!

Windows HDD Driver tips:

1. Hotswap while windows is loaded. This is by far the EASIEST method to get your drive recognized. To do this load windows (xp or 2k) and do the hotswap. Then after the hotswap, right click my computer, goto properties, hardware tab, and load up the device manager. Expand the "Disk Drives" icon. Finally click the "scan for hardware changes" button (looks like a computer with magnifying glass). If you did the hotswap correctly, it will only take a minute for your drive to show up in the device manager. If it takes a long time to detect, then you probably did the hotswap too slowly.
2. ONLY left click when necessary in the HDD driver program because it is very buggy and will crash if you left click too much. Use right clicks almost exlusively.
3. Do right click "insert file" to put files on the xbox harddrive.
4. FOR THE AUDIO HACK: Hdd driver will crash if nothing is in your "music" folder. Therefore, you will never be able to use the HDD driver to do the audio exploit if you dont insert an audio cd in your xbox and click copy track to harddrive within the MS dashboard. (This will create stuff in the music folder so HDD driver wont crash.)

Xlinux Tips:
1. Put the xlinux cd in your cd drive, turn the computer on, and be ready to hotswap the xbox harddrive.
2. When the ascii picture of that guy loads up do the swap.
3. Then press enter to boot. If lots of errors pop up, the HD Is locked, try to swap again from step1.
4. All the tutorials i read assume you have a fat harddrive on your PC. i didnt so i had to figure out these commands for myself:

Basic Linux commands to get XLINUX working:

linux command_____________dos equiv___________function
ls_________________________ dir ___________ tells you whats in a directory
cd_________________________ cd ___________ lets you go into another directory
cp________________________ copy ___________  copies a file from one directory to another
mv________________________ move _________    moves a file from one directory to another
(note mv is used to rename files in linux, ex. mv xboxdash.xbe linux.xbe renames xboxdash.xbe to linux.xbe)

/dev/hda       /dev/hdb       /dev/hdc     /dev/hdd
are the drives in linux. the A in hda means primary master drive. B is primary slave. C is secondary master and D is secondary slave.
So, if your xbox is on primary master use hda in your mount command, etc.

if you dont have a fat harddrive for your exploit files, burn a cd with the exploit files, then mount the cd:
mount -t auto /dev/hd* /cdrom
(note, make the * A B C or D depending on where your CD drive is plugged in)

To mount the xbox drive:
mkdir /xbox
mount -t fatx /dev/hd*% /xbox
(note, * is A B C or D depending on where the xbox HD is hotswapped to % depends on which hack you are doing. For the audio hack you need to access the E: drive so, you need to make % = 50 for the font expoit you need to access the C drive so % = 51.
ex. for using the audio exploit with the xbox hardrive on primary master:
mount -t fatx /dev/hda50 /xbox
if anyone wants to add to this to make it some sort of tutorial, just reply to this thread. HOPE THIS HELPS SOMEONE!

will all this work if i have an error 16?
ive tried doing the ide cable thing
hooking my hard drive up to the D:/ drive
etc.
and it never recognizes it.
and im trying to fix this
W/O hgaving to buy a mod chip.
possible?

thanks for the advice. for some reason I still can't get the hotswap working though, despite trying all that tons of times. hdd-driver just won't read the disk

ftothe3, excellent post.  You have compiled info spread out elsewhere and added more.

For the fat harddrive part, does fat=fat32 too?

And everyone don't forget to do a image backup of your xbox hdd once it is recognized in Windows/Xlinux.  For Windows, there were reports of HDD Driver backup reliability. So I suggest WinHex, Ghost, Driveimage or other tools that supports imaging.

yes fat=fat32. if you look at the other xlinux tutorial, it tells you to mount your hard drive using the command:
mount -t vfat /dev/hda this only works if you have a harddrive that has a fat (or fat32) partition. if its ntfs (like most xp and 2k installs) then this mount command wont work. the work-around i suggested was putting the files on cd and mounting that.

@n30: if hdd driver doesnt recognize the drive that means you're not doing the hotswap correctly. try using my tips. hdd driver is buggy, but it def. does tell you if you do the swap correctly (it'll say "found xbox drive")

am up to 30 attempts or so now...seems I can't pull it off for some reason...been really careful not to stir the box, to do it fast..but still...am I the only one that can't get the hotswap working?

is the xbox supposed to react in some way when the xbox ide is removed? the dashboard kinda freezes..then starts blinking again...the dvd player tries to detect a disc

Have you tried some of these tips others have posted?

1.  Wait 10 mins at the dashboard for xbox hdd to spindown to standby mode then swap.
2.  Remove IDE cable from DVD drive, wait for error message then swap.
3.  Select Memory on dashboard, select Xbox Hard Disk, then swap.

Actually I personally don't see why these tips matter because accord to xbox-linux docs, the hdd is unlocked after the startup animation and logo.

Also test your PC's IDE cable use for the swap on another hdd to ensure it is not a bad cable.

I have done this on a 1.3 box and was also having problems with hdd driver and hotswapping... I used the xlinux disk and followed the instructions in this  thread

http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?act...ST&f=45&t=74925

up to and including the mounting of the drives in xlinux.... things I did differently

..I loaded a game, went to game options, turned sound off in everything (game was midtown madness.. the first that came to hand), then I left the box about 10 mins - if you pay close attention you will hear the drive close down and all that will be left is the noise of it spinning, but no write activity...

..then I loaded the phoenix bios as per my post at the end of the thread above... worked first time... and I have used the xlinux mount/unmount method 5 times with complete success .... after being up to around the 30 hotswap fails mark myself I can recommend this method.. it definitely unlocks the drive... what you copy on from that point is up to you - make sure you follow the instructiions in the above thread to unmount the drives when you are fininshed... and the mounting and unmounting instructions for the pc drive you are copying from are for a fat32 drive only.. ntfs will not mount... any questions.. lemme know
