Title: Tutorial- Bigger Harddrive No Linux
Post by: caxtor on January 03, 2004, 01:35:00 PM
Help PLEASE!!!
I get an error 06 with both my Original Xbox HDD and the New HDD, i unlocked with unlockx using the HDD key from Evox backup, then after doing the cloning in WinHEx, I Got the new key using eeprom.bin in liveinfo, after that i reeboted and then locked both HDd drives again, the orgial with the first key from evox backup and the new one using the one liveinfo gave me...

What i think i did wrong was: i unlocked the original HDD with the key and included many 0's  at the end of the key, exactly as the .txt file and then when i locked the original back again i didnt inlude the 0's...

May this be the problem, if so what can i do to fix it im so SCARED i fried my xbox!!!
Thanx for replies unsure.gif

EDIT:
I managed to get the new HDD Working beacuse i used a wrong password to lock it, in live info i saved the stuff to a .cfg, and ussed the HDDKey that came in there but i was supposed to use he Calculated Password.... My bad...

As for the Original  HDD i tried to UNlock it again the way i locked it before but i tink i really messed up when typing the Lock password again, i think i misstyped...

Is there any way for me to wipe the old password, unlock the Original HDD or get the Lock password for me to get the Original HDD to work again...?

okay i'm having a HUGE problem...

i put my xbox hd on my primary ide as slave. my wd 80gb on my secondary ide as master. went into unlockx. all three drives (including my pc C) we showed as NOT LOCKABLE. ??

so anyway, i go into config magic and unlock my xbox hd. boot into windows and clone my xbox hd to my 80gb. cloning goes with no problem.

so i'm all done, go to lock my hd. open unlockx...still shows my hd's as NOT LOCKABLE!! when i boot up to my new hd in my xbox i get error 6, same with my old xbox hd. sad.gif

i tried booting my second xbox to configmagic and swapping hd's to lock my new 80gb and my old xbox hd. both say drive isn't lockable.

why would i get this error? obviously my xbox hd is lockable. and i checked the lockablity of my wd 80gb. it's lockable. why would i get this error in unlockx? should i try another program to unlock?

also, in configmagic after unlocking/locking my hd it says 'setting mpassword to TEAMASSEMBLY'. but it still shows the hd password as a long series of numbers. any ideas? please, i don't want my xbox to be screwed.

okay figured it out. i didn't realize i had to disconnect my PC C hd in order to unlock. the wd 80gb said lockable and unlocked. locked it with the hd key and it's fine.

but i'm still having trouble with my original xbox 8gb. it is showing in unlockx as lockable and locked. but it still won't boot in the xbox.

i used TEAMASSEMABLY as the unlock password. should i try the long key?

i'll post my results.

allright, it worked. just had to type in the long key for the password. both hd's work in my xbox now!

on to my next problem...i can't seem to format my F drive. sad.gif
i tried using the evox way copying the code into my evox.ini. it 'formated' but after it was done and i rebooted there was no extra space.
i tried raw ftp commands 'Formatpath DeviceHarddisk0Partition3' and 'FormatDrive 'number'' and that too did not work.

any ideas?

btw - excellent tutorial sabwafare. very easy to do.

all fixed. right there...

'Formatpath DeviceHarddisk0Partition3'

partition 6 not 3...did it and a beautiful 72 gigs free.

you rock sabwafare. 3 thumbs up on this tutorial.

UnlockX is only usable with a 1.0 or 1.1 ?!? Fuck no how else can I get the key for my new drive ?!? And which section of Liveinfo am I taking the new key from ? Cause none seem to fit..

i used unlockx on my 1.5 box. worked fine.

and you load your eeprom.bin from your orignal xbox hd in liveinfo. then use the caluculated password to lock your new hd.

Has anyone tried this with Norton Ghost?

I tend to use that to clone disks, and I know WinHex is not a FREE tool as such, so I have Ghost so why not eh?

Only problem is I do not remember Ghost having the "Start at 0" option..

But it clones Windows disks just fine so  beerchug.gif

you can try it with ghost. i know that other hd upgrade tuts use ghost. but i prefer winhex. google search, find the crack. simple. smile.gif

ok, i am also thinking of hotswapping hardrives inside an xbox that is softmodded

1. take softmodded xbox and boot up from slayers disk 2.5
2. hotswap hardrives
3. run setup hardrive and install evox + apps

(to do most of the work)

and then somehow unlock it somewhere else.. i wouldnt mind trying this and failing, but i dont want to cause damage to the xbox.

edit: another interesting thought.. forcing it to refresh by backing up eeprom and hardrive data... just a thought..

Post by: JBNinja99 on February 10, 2004, 01:44:00 PM
i wouldn't try that method if i were you. i booted my softmodded box to slayers cd. went to format a new hd (don't remember what option exactly i did). hotswapped the hd's, putting my 80gb in. started slayers proces, took about 20 mins. after it was done, i went in to ftp to it to put the exploits back on. the ftp gave no ip. and as you know there is no way to change the ip without saving and rebooting. so all in all, it didn't work.

i still suggest going and cloning the hd w/ winhex. it's so much easier. clone the hd, format the F and your done.
Title: Tutorial- Bigger Harddrive No Linux
Post by: JBNinja99 on February 10, 2004, 03:00:00 PM
hehe, i didn't realize i replied so quickly. but anyway, with the slayers cd method you are hotswapping to a virgin box with no exploits on it. so even though slayers installs everything you need for the hd to run, without exploits on your virgin box it will boot to error 21. so after you are finished installing the new hd through slayers, you must ftp to it to install exploits and format the F drive. well after slayers is done rebuilding the hd, when i tried to go in to ftp to it to put exploits back on the ip read as 0.0.0.0. and in evox's settings, there is only the option to exit, not save and exit. so i couldn't change the ip of my box. so i tried rebooting, but only got error 21. even tried booting to the MA gamesave. still didn't work. this method sounds really good...in fact there was a tut on this i read. just sounds too easy. i used this tutorial...the thread were on right now. worked like a charm. the only hard part is unlock/locking the hd. trust me, i'd go with this one.

two more questions  biggrin.gif

1. ok so lets say i used slayers and installed everything and its all formated and locked and junk. could I then hotswap it and put on the neccessary exploits?

2. my friend gave me his xbox to do this on, without a power cable.. if i find a power cable that will fit it, is it safe to plug in?
Title: Tutorial- Bigger Harddrive No Linux
Post by: JBNinja99 on February 13, 2004, 12:42:00 PM
yeah i guess if you do decide to go slayers way then you could hotswap and put the exploits on.

but when your hotswapping, your gonna be connecting your xbox hd to your pc anyway, so why not just clone it?

and i'm sure you can use a plug that fits the xbox. don't see why that wouldn't work.

alright so i was able to do the format options thing and format my large hardrive... but whenever i try to access a different option to install evox and stuff it just crashes it. i have decided to give up and go by the tutorial.

yeah i feel you man. that slayers hd install looks so easy. i thought i'd have a new hd in 10 mins. but unfortuantely, it was really too easy to be true.

good luck w/ the other tutorial. didn't have any problems with it when i did it. except unlocking/locking the hd. like a dumbass i didn't remove all hd's while trying to unlock my xbox one.

hey, im really screwed up right now.  i gave up with the boot discs for xbox cause none of them worked. (i have no i dea why either)  so anyway im trying to do this thing and im lost at the hookup here.  because from what i understand you need the computer one on primary master, new xbox HD on primary slave, and the orig. xbox HD on secondary slave. so wouldnt you need an IDE cable with 3 connectors?  i only ever heard of 2 connectors on an IDE cable
im so confused lol, please help me
thanx

to originally unlock/lock the xbox hd, it must be on the primary IDE channel and set to master. when you are cloning the hd, connect your PC hd on the primary IDE channel as master and the xbox hd on the secondary channel as slave. for the xbox hd, disconnect one of your cd-rom drives (disconnect the master if you can) and set the xbox hd jumper as master. with that you can have 3 hd's connected to your pc at the same time, and then go about cloning from there.

>>> 9. Configure evox to format your e,f,x,y,Z drives

I'm using the st.db exploit and have a factory C: partition with the only modifications being on my E: partition. Can I do the method you mention here with the exception of formatting the E: partition (for obvious reasons)? Or would I not get the extra space until E: was formatted? Which brings me to my other questions (sorry, I am also fairly new to this), which partitions benefit from a larger drive? I would assume E: or F: or both? And do you get any benefit out of a larger drive if you don't have a mod chip? I only ask because I saw another thread where that was asked, and the answer given was "no".

Thanks for the help and for the plain English tut. smile.gif

I have recently found ut you don't really have to format any drive but F:. It is reccomended that you format all drives for integrity purposes but it isn't required. F: is the only partition that will benefit from a larger drive. All space above 8GB is stored in F:. And no you do not need a modchip.

I guess a moderator needs to see it. Its truly the best method to get a new hard drive ready. I did the steps today after solving some difficulties ( i don't have a disk drive , needed to burn a bootable CD heh ) and it worked just flawlessly.

The whole procedure of getting the new hard drive up and running took me less than a hour.

thank you so much for sharing.

is it absolutely necessary to clone the original xbox hard drive onto the new one and use unlockx?  i already have a 20gig installed on my xbox, and used configmagic to lock it.  it says it's locked, but when i try the font exploit and signed phoenix loader...all i get is "error 13"  i don't get what i'm doing wrong

I wish I had seen this post yesterday.  Then I wouldn't have wasted my time with HDD Driver and hdprepar.  Oh well, this is a great method and it's basically what I did last night (after you take out the extraneous steps I did).

The only difference was that I used Hex Workshop instead of WinHex to copy the sectors.  Same thing, pretty much.  Also, I copied it to my PC HD first, since it didn't occur to me to copy directly. >_<  The great thing about Hex Workshop (and probably WinHex) is that you can back up your HD in parts, to avoid the 4GB file limit in FAT32, if needed (I only have 10GB of NTFS space for WinXP).  Just copy 8 million sectors at a time (0-7999999, 8000000-15999999, etc.)  This is useful if you want to keep a backup of your original drive for some reason (but I'm going to erase mine).

I have one thing to add:

Tip: Whenever you connect your Xbox hard drives (new or old), you can go into your BIOS settings and disable the IDE channel for that drive.  WinHex/Hex Workshop and UnLockX will still be able to see the drives, and DOS/Windows will boot up A LOT faster.  Just remember to re-enable the channel (or set it to auto) later, if you have to.

jaxx, it's only necessary to use UnLockX if you don't have a modchip or haven't flashed the BIOS.  ConfigMagic should work, but if we can't run it in the first place (because the new drive isn't locked yet), then we have to use UnLockX.  I take it that you have a modchip and that you're enabling/disabling it.

First of all, you have to narrow down your problem:

- Does it show the Phoenix logo before the Error 13?  If so, then the HD is locked fine, and there is a problem with your font/PBL/BIOS setup.  If not, then the HD may not be locked properly, or PBL may not be set up properly.

- Remove the font exploit and restore your original xboxdash.xbe and .xtf files.  Disable the chip.  If this works, then you know for sure that the HD is locked properly.  If not, then it's probably not.  I'm not familiar with locking the drive using ConfigMagic, so I can't help you much beyond that.

sweet...thanks a lot Grospolina...finally a straight answer i can understand!  my drive was indeed locked after checking and i found out it was a problem with the dash.  i still had my media x menu dash set to xboxdash.xbe...that's why i was gettin that error.  i switched that to evoxdash.xbe and everything loads fine now.  my only problem now is that i'm having trouble signing the original MS dash to be compatible.  i used xvi32 to change all the XTF strings to XFT, then signed it with xbedump...but i still can't access it.  any ideas?

edit: also, which rom is packed with the signed phoenix bios loader?  the "xboxrom.bin"?  is it possible to use a blue color mod x2 4977?  how would i go about doing so?  thanks
Title: Tutorial- Bigger Harddrive No Linux
Post by: Grospolina on August 20, 2003, 10:34:00 AM
I'm glad you got it working.  smile.gif

Let's start over with xboxdash.xbe.  Make a fresh copy of the original (let's call it msxbdash.xbe) and then use your hex editor to search for the hex values 7800740066.  This is the string "x.t.f", where the dots represent nulls, not periods.  Edit all instances to 7800660074, or "x.f.t".  Don't ever type any periods.  Save the file.

If you're loading PBL, then you don't need to sign it at all.  Otherwise, sign it with "xbedump msxbdash.xbe -font".  Delete msxbdash.xbe and rename out.xbe to msxbdash.xbe.

Make sure your original fonts are called Xbox.xft and Xbox Book.xft, and that they are in the right place (depends what xboxdash version you have).

Upload msxbdash.xbe to your Xbox and point MXM at it.  I haven't used MXM yet (that's my next task), but I think you can take it from there.

So lemme get this straight...

Basically, we're having three HDDs connected at once...

Primary Master: Your main PC's HDD (with the operating system) - which, in my case, would be WinXP.
Primary Slave: The new HDD you want to install in the Xbox.
Secondary Master: My CD-/DVD-ROM, I guess?
Secondary Slave: My current Xbox HDD.

So far, so good?

Now if I wanted to not hotswap, all I have to do is this:

1) Boot into DOS with DOS Boot CD (including unlockx)
2) Unlock current Xbox HDD with unlockx.
3) Reboot into WinXP.
4) Clone current Xbox HDD to new HDD I want to insall in Xbox.
5) Boot into DOS with same DOS Boot CD and lock the new HDD I want to install in Xbox with unlockx.

Now here's where my understanding breaks down:

a) Without a modchip, how do I configure Evox to format F:
cool.gif Should I format the new HDD first?  Right now it's a FAT32 partition with data on it.  I plan on clearing it off first, but how should I do this?  Does cloning within WinHex somehow format the HDD with the same file system as the source HDD?  I don't know much about WinHex's cloning function.
Title: Tutorial- Bigger Harddrive No Linux
Post by: Grospolina on August 20, 2003, 11:48:00 AM
Not exactly.  UnLockX only works on drives on the primary IDE channel (master or slave), so you'll need to set the original HD as the primary slave to unlock it, and then clone it, and then set the new HD as the primary slave in order to lock it.

Then again, you COULD unlock the original HD with ConfigMagic first, but I wouldn't do that.  I'd want to know that UnLockX is able to unlock and lock the drive with the same key.

Also, remember to get the new key for the new HD from liveinfo (using your eeprom.bin).  You can't just lock it with the same key as your original.

When you clone it, it doesn't matter which channels the two HDs are on, although it would be better if they were on different cables (one primary and one secondary).  Just make doubly sure that you know which one is which.

Now, to answer your questions:

The new HD does not have to be formatted or partitioned/unpartitioned.  In fact, cloning the drive will destroy any formatting you do.  It copies the whole hard drive, sector by sector, so they will be (almost) one and the same.  The file system and all files will be copied over.  Unfortunately, anything on F: drive will be destroyed, since the drives are of different sizes.  F: drive is "the partition that includes ALL space after the first 8GB", and cloning it to a different size seems to corrupt it.   All you have to do is format it and it will be available for use.

There are several ways to format your F: drive:

1. Configure EvoX to include a "Format F:" item BEFORE you clone the drive, and make sure you're not running EvoX off F: drive.  Formatting tutorial

2. Make a MA/007 game save that boots EvoX and includes the "Format F:" command.  You can save it to E: drive before you clone, of after, if you have the tools.

3. Format F: using RAW commands over FTP.  Search the Exploit forums for this.

In all cases, make sure you have a way of getting into EvoX (or any FTP) after cloning the drive.  All drives except for F: will be available after cloning.

Okay, so, while I have you:

1) How do I add a format partition command in the evox.ini?  Specifically, what is the syntax to add it as a menu item?  I want to set it to format E:

2) Can I format E: while my Xbox is on and booted into Evox?  Do I actually need to save the E: partition first?  This is unrelated to installing the new HDD, of course.  It's a problem I'm having with phantom disk space and I'm hoping that reformatting E: will help.  If I have to save it because it has some system files or whatnot on it, may I do so by just copying all the files and directories to my PC via FTP?  I don't personally need anything (no saves, nothing) but from what I've read, everyone seems to indicate that backing up the E: drive is a must.

Thanks in advance.

1. Follow this tutorial: Formatting F: drive.  I posted it in my previous message.

2. Add another Item and Action, just like in the above tutorial, but make these changes:
F: to E:
@210 to @211
[Action_10] to [Action_11]

If you don't care about your saves, then I'm pretty sure it's okay to format E: drive.  Some homebrew apps use it too, but I think only for settings.  And yes, you can FTP all of it over to your PC as a backup.

I didn't read too carefully.  What I ended up doing was deleting everything else in the menu and only adding that action and that menu item like it says.  Worked like a charm and I got all my disk space back.  Thank you!

can someone point me to a tutorial for unlockx.  I've searched but have not found something easy to understand.  Do I need to use liveinfo or get the key from evo-x?  Can I use the original hdd key for the new hdd key?

I might as well post it here for sake of completeness.

What you need:

EvolutionX installed and working on your Xbox
Win9x/DOS boot disk (boots to command prompt)
UnLockX
liveinfo

Setting up:
- Place unlockx.exe on the boot disk.
- In EvoX, use the "Backup" option.
- Get your eeprom.bin and hddkey.txt through FTP.  It should be in backup.
- Print/write out your hddkey.

Unlocking the old Xbox HD:
1. Turn off your PC.
2. Connect your old Xbox HD to your PC's primary IDE channel.  It may be master or slave, but it MUST be on the primary channel (a.k.a. IDE1).
3. You probably want to connect your new Xbox HD to the secondary IDE channel (master or slave) at this point, so that you can clone to it later.
4. Insert the boot disk and turn on your PC.  You may want to set your CMOS not to detect the Xbox drive, so that it boots up faster.  Of course, you also have to set it up to boot from the floppy.
5. You should be in the command prompt.
6. Type: unlockx [enter]
7. Select your Xbox drive.  It should say "Lockable (AND locked)".
8. Type in your HD key, with no spaces or colons. e.g. 1133557799BBDDFF0022446688AACCEE
9. Press 'U' to unlock.  This unlocks the drive, but doesn't disable the key.  It MAY say that it couldn't unlock the drive, but really did.  Confirm it in the next step.
10. Type: unlockx [enter]
11. Select your Xbox drive.  If it's unlocked, it should say "Unlocked (reboot to set)" or something.
12. Type in your HD key again.
13. Press 'U' to unlock.  This disables the key permanently.
14. You can run unlockx once more to confirm that it is unlocked.  It should say "Lockable (NOT locked)".
15. Reboot your PC without the boot disk and go clone it and/or back it up!

Locking your new Xbox HD:
1. In Windows, with your Xbox HD installed, run liveinfo.  Don't forget to clone the drive at some point!
2. Load the eeprom.bin file and select your new Xbox HD.
3. Write down your new HD key (NOT the unique key).
1. Turn off your PC.
2. Connect your new Xbox HD to your PC's primary IDE channel.  It may be master or slave, but it MUST be on the primary channel (a.k.a. IDE1).
3. Insert the boot disk and turn on your PC. You should boot to the command prompt.
6. Type: unlockx [enter]
7. Select your Xbox drive.  It should say "Lockable (NOT locked)".
8. Type in your NEW liveinfo HD key, with no spaces or colons. e.g. 0022446688AACCEE1133557799BBDDFF
9. Press 'L' to lock.  This locks the drive.
10. You can run unlockx once more to confirm that it is unlocked.  It should say "Unlocked (reboot to set)" or something.
11. If you want, you can reboot and run unlockx again to verify that it says "Lockable (AND locked)".
12. Turn off your PC and try out your new Xbox drive!
13. Assuming it worked, format F: drive to see your new space (it may be 0 or at some strange number before you format).

smile.gif ) exploits, etc. I would then like to be able to throw my old (original drive) back in.

What I want to know is if I am supposed to RE-lock my original XBOX drive after I do the cloning to a new drive. I noticed in Grospolina's last post that he says "13. Press 'U' to unlock. This disables the key permanently." and never mentions relocking the original drive. Does this mean that I don't (can't?) relock the original drive? Would it work if I had to put the original drive back in my Xbox?

This might sound like a real noob question, but I am a noob afterall. smile.gif

Which key is the correct one (if any) and why is at least one of them wrong?

The key for your new drive will be different from the key for your old drive.  I assume that you're trying it on your new drive.

You're seeing 0 with the font exploit because you're probably not using Phoenix BIOS Loader with an F:drive-enabled BIOS.  The retail BIOS won't be able to see F: drive.  Even if you loaded PBL, it would still show 33 gigs.  You'll need to format F: in order to see the full space.  How much stuff do you have on F:?  Can you back it up on your PC through FTP?

Negative, the hddinfo.txt is from the "Backup" alternative in Evox, and the eeprom.bin from the same backup is loaded with liveinfo.

Well then, did you already unlock the old drive?  If not, then maybe liveinfo can't get the proper info (model and serial, I think) from the drive if it's still locked.  If it is unlocked, then I don't know why it would be different.  However, if it's already unlocked, is it really that important?  If you lock the new drive with the wrong pass, then you can always unlock it again.

To clearify, the Xbox drive is still in the Xbox. Maybe I'm totally wrong about this, but i thought that if you use the "Load eprom" function in liveinfo with the eprom.bin from the Evox backup, it would give information regarding the Xbox HD - from information in the eprom file only regardless which drives are attached to the PC at the moment...

This is the log produced by liveinfo:
CODE
#Please note ALL fields and Values are Case Sensitive !!

XBOXMAC  = "00:50:F2:77:96:E8"

#ONLY Use NTSC or PAL for VideoMode
VideoMode   = "PAL"

#ONLY Use 01, 02 or 04 for XBE Region

Confounder   = "00:00:00:00:80:4A:1C:00"

(Some values are changed)

Also note that both the hddinfo.txt and eeprom.bin were created from the same "backup" call in EvoX menu. Locked or unlocked? Dunno, did the hotswap trick to install ernie & bert stuff.

No, the password is calculated from the model number, the serial number, and the EEPROM file.  The EEPROM file doesn't have the model and serial numbers, so you have to plug in the HDD in order to retrieve them.  If you'll notice, the "HDD Info" box has a drop list where you can pick the location of your Xbox drive.  Right now, it's just grabbing the model and serial numbers from your PC's HDD, so that's why it's wrong.  The "EEPROM Info" box should be correct, however.

I'm using LiveInfo Beta 2.

A BIG "Thank you!" to sabwafare & Grospolina for all the help & info in this thread. I successfully (and fairly easily) did the hard drive upgrade without any hot-swapping of the hard drives, etc. As a matter of fact, it was so easy that not only did I upgrade my Xbox drive to a 120GB, but I also made an additional clone of my original drive so that I would never (in theory) have to mess around with my original drive again (it's now stored away safely). smile.gif

Thanks again, guys. And I'm sure my wife thanks you because I can stop buying 25 DVD-R disc spindles like they're going out of style. smile.gif

Here's a question that perhaps you can answer.

Can I lock the new drive with config magic by:
1. Boot the X with the original drive in, and start ConfigMagic.
2. Once CM is up, hotswap to my NEW drive, which is fed power from a splitter.
3. Get CM to detect the drive change, and lock the drive?

I haven't tried this yet as I don't want to damage anything. But would this work?

Morden.

There is only one way I can see it NOT working, and that's if ConfigMagic can't refresh to the new model, serial and EEPROM.

By the way, couldn't you just unplug the old drive and plug in the new one?  The new one isn't locked, so there isn't any reason for it to be powered at bootup.  The old drive doesn't need it's power preserved (after unhooking it) either.  I'd first unplug the power before unplugging the IDE cable to see if that works, IF I were doing it that way.

Well, I don't see why it wouldn't be able to refresh. I would try powering it after boot, even if it was locked it wouldn't unlock without the IDE attatched.

ok you go ahead and try to unplug a hot hard drive or any drive for that matter what its powered on,, and i mean the power cable not the ide,,

people are worried about frying stuff when pulling the ide cable,,

1)
theres a 99.99999% chance the power supply will just instantly shut off cuz the cord was pulled,, its more aor less a safety feature of ANY power supply.

2)
if you dont fry the power supply theres a good chance of frying the hard drive from a POSSIBLE arc of juice from the plug to the hard drive pins,,,

3)

i thought about this,, but you would have to have a PC power supply right there for the extra power cord  unless you wanted to do a 3-way split with the xbox power supply,, and it would more than likely handle it no prob but in the interest of safety,  dont,, use a pc power supply .

and remember make sure your hard drive is even lockable prior to this or it will all be for nothing.

Big thanks to Grospolina for the very clear 28 step unlock/lock post on page 3  - you can _never_ be too clear when explaining things that are new and unfamiliar for someone who has never performed the task before beerchug.gif

I replaced my original HD today with a 120 GB Deskstar. The only things that weren't really clear to me before was the lock/unlock issue and keys, but Grospolinas nice post cleared it all out.

Basically i followed the original post by sabwafare but since I don't want to buy a license for Winhex I used my XLinux CD that I allready had from my font install to copy the disk contents:

1. Booted with a win98 bootdisk from bootdisk.com and unlocked Xbox original drive with key from hddinfo.txt.

2. Booted from Xlinux CD and copied the original disk:
CODE
dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/hdb

Took ~10 mins for the copy (/dev/hda=primary master and /dev/hdb=primary slave and the CD was on secondary master - this was my setup).

3. Booted into Win2k and got new key from liveinfo with eeprom.bin loaded.

4. Booted with the win98 bootdisk again and locked new drive with new key.

5. Put new hd into XBbox and did "Format F" from Evox menu.

Oh well, it was worth a try.

Just locked it with UnlockX and all is well.

ok probably being realy stupid but done this twice already.

Followed the 28 step guide to installing a larger HDD.
I even did it slow just to make sure i wouldn't make any mistakes!!!

Anyways my problem occurs when i put the HDD into the Xbox

I get a 06 your box requires service message.

As i've said followed the instructions to the letter and can't for the life of me figure out were i've gone wrong.

The Xbox HDD was succesfully unlocked
cloning was also successful (used winhex)
locking both the xbox hdd and the new hdd also succeded
(checked to make sure they were locked with aditional reboot)
Lockable : locked was the message.

The only thing i can think of is posibly the hdd key

when in Liveinfo i saved scrolled down to the Maxttor HDD and saved the details it provided into a cfg file.
did i choose the correct hdd?
should i have chosen the xbox hdd and saved its info?

Oh yeah and i nearly forgot to mention the Original Xbox Hdd is back in and functioning as normal.

please help.
Thanks

OK,  I want to install a larger hard drive in my xbox.  I'm using the audio hack and I'm using a pc with Windows 98se, can it be done? I know liveinfo doesn't work on a 98se computer, what is a substitute for this program.  Is this even possible with my set up? I put in a 20gb (its all we had lying around) last nite with a mate, but when using his original Xbox HDD, he gets an  error 06. we think we re-locked the original drive with the wrong key, but UnlockX wouldnt unlock it when we gave it the same key. We tried the Hot swap in config magic, but yeah, jaust as Morden said, "Locked - Drive isnt lockable" ??

Oh well, at least the 20gb HDD works with it

UnLockX stores the key you used in a text file.  Check it make sure you didn't type it wrong.  Also, when you unlock it, be sure to do it twice, even if it said it didn't unlock it the first time.

Hi all, I'm having some problems with this and I really hope you can help me out.

I'm using the ma exploit on a version 1 pal xbox, Ive followed the tutorial and everything seemed to have gone well except that when I put the new hardrive in I got a 6 error. So I tried putting the original one back in and now still get the same 6 error.

The original drive is locked back up and it says lockable and locked. Its also on cable select.

Another thing is that after locking up my new drive I can no longer unlock it with the new key I generated in liveinfo.

Please help!

i agree sounds like a possible bad key  but as for the error 6  when you put in the original hd  i have no clue what error 6 is but it dont sound good you may have damaged the ide cable.,   try another ide cable

ultra66 or ultra 100  ultra 100 does give a slight data speed increase but not that much.

im pretty sure this site has a listing of what error 6 is,

I will be doing this on a larger drive when it arrives, just want to get my facts %100 right before I start..

I hope no one minds me going through the tutorial...

OK, let me get this right:
____________
Winhex (FULL VERSION)
Does it have to be Winhex? Can another tool be used? Such as ghost?
unlockx
I assume this can be got from the 'usual place'
Dos boot disc (with unlockX)
Any old boot disk?
Software exploit preinstalled on original hard drive (see other tutorials)
I will be using AUDIO
Some of these apps can be found in the usual places.
I see...
_______________

1. Connect the new drive to your computer as primary slave.
Leave your main computer HDD on primary master.

Check, on the SAME IDE Cable

2. Copy unlockx.exe to your dos boot disc

I use a tool called Dr Dos, anyone tried this?

3. Disconnect your main computer's harddrive and connect your orig. xbox drive as primary master.

OK, so now we have the new HD and the xbox HD on the same IDE Cable

4. Use unlockX to unlock your original harddrive (see other tutorials)

Check, I assume this is rather simple

5. reconnect the computer's original drive as primary master and connect your orig. xbox drive as secondary slave.

OK, now the drive is unlocked, we want to boot into windows, both drives are now on different IDE Cables..

6. boot into windows and open winhex. At the top of the program click tools, then disk tools, then disk clone. Pick your original XBOX HDD as source and the new drive as destination. They can be found under physical drives. Make sure you check copy entire source disk and pick 0 for starting sector. click ok.

Sounds simple enough, Ghost has a similer tool, and seen as I dont have WinHex....

7. After winhex is done copying reboot with your dos floppy and use unlockX to lock the new drive (see other tutorials).

Again, I assume this is rather simple

8. Configure evox to format your F: drive

Cool..

Right! Thats clear now, Im off now to find some unlockx tutorials...

What brand drive is it? It sounds like the drive might be damaged. If possible try relocking with config magic. If that doesn't work you might need a modchip to get it working again. If you have a modded drive, you can find a cheap small hard drive 8 or more gigs. Then clone it with the modded drive. Lock and boot the new drive with the xbox then use a program like boxplorer to replace the fonts and delete the exploit. Now you have a stock HD. It is always VERY useful to keep your stock HD as a backup in case you get a clockloop.
