Title: Bigger Xbox Hdd... It's Really Easy
Post by: gokussj007 on July 17, 2003, 01:11:00 PM
ok.. first... get the atapwd, hdlock, hdunlock, hddisabl...utilities.... put in a blank floppy

second... get the gamesave exploit of evox and use the utilities of evox to backup your xbox's info...  ftp into your xbox and copy and paste your backup folder that was created by evox... now.. look at the text file.. that contains your xbox's OEM HDD key... save it... write this down...

The Replacement Drive must be one that is Lockable...
third.. download liveinfo... click load eeprom and select the location of the backup folder created by evox.. and pick eeprom... ok... now there are two sections to this program.. look ignore the top... go to the bottom and search for the replacement drive you want to install.... (it should already have been on and setup on the computer since bootup.. or if you have winxp or 2000 you can go to device manager and keep refreshing them... until you see the replacement drive...)   when you click on your replacement drive.. it will generate a key for that drive.. this key will fool your xbox into thinking it's the original.. so save this key also... write it down...

fourth... download hdprepar... the program that partitions the replacement drive with xbox characteristics.... well just zero the first 4096 sectors.... hey be careful... I have a Maxtor 80GB HDD that stores my OS and the one I have in my xbox now WD80GB... so using this program.. it's tricky cause two 80GB HDD?.. which one do you choose?... I took some time figuring this out.. I noticed that the WD80GB displays a lesser amount of space than the Maxtor 80GB...  so you see... be careful.............  once this is done...

fith....get the HDD_Drivers... by T00G... u know what I'm talking about.. the annoying program that is almost impossible to really detect your xbox's drive after the hot swap method.... By the way you do not need to do the hot swap method as you will soon see...  ok.. remember the floppy of the hdd utilities I asked you to create?.. well here we go.. time to use them...

Alright shutdown pc... take your xbox OEM HDD out and place it on the Primary IDE cable.. no other devices should be using this cable... oh be sure to set the XBOX HDD's Jumper settings to Master... ok.. u know your HDD with the OS?... place that one on the Secondary IDE cable... mines was set as master for this cable....

now.. turn on your pc... u can skip the detection of the discs... I just want you to be able to boot a bootable disc.. I used my old M$ 98 startup disk... to get me to the command prompt... once there... put the hdd utilities floppy in.. and type atapwd... this will take you to a screen.. we just want to make sure we can see our devices... if you don't see it.. u most likely need to refresh the screen.. there's a key there.. read the bottom panel for specific intructions on that... ok.. look for your xbox OEM HDD..  you'll see it... now... press Esc... and we're back in the command prompt... do the following:
A:/hdunlock.exe
in there another little GUI pops out.. press the # that corresponds to your xbox's OEM HDD.....  it will then ask for the password... type in the password you got from evox hddinfo.txt... e.g. f39ead.....  (ignore the ':'  and don't bother putting the zeros after u come across :00: everything at that point and after.. ignore zeros...).. ok... after this.. press enter.. it should say done...
now check atapwd again.. look at your xbox OEM HDD.. and SELFXV.....under L it should now say '-' sign.. .meaning you unlocked it... press Esc again...

now u need to use hddisabl.exe... do the same as above it will ask for the password again...  moments later... Done... use atapwd again.. and now the E has a '-' sign under it also... we want this to happen 'cause when you reboot your PC... we don't want the HDD to be locked again.. that's why you disable it from locking...

ok.. reboot your pc again.. log onto windows xp or 2000 again... hey I don't know about win2000 users but if you're on an xp computer.. it's gonna take a while loading the settings.. you'll see what i mean.. don't worry you'll be able to go on windows.. soon...give it time... once in windows... run HDD_Driver... it might say an Invalid File Size.. error.. lol... good news for you.... it's reading the xbox OEM HDD.... but anyways.. don't click on that error.. just go to the top and click backup the hdd... u need about 8-12 gb of freespace on your OS HDD... 8 gigs max.. if your xbox.. only has the dashboard... and like no saved games... if you know what I mean... ok... so... let it make the backup.. should go really fast.. like 30 mins at the most.. hey guys... uhmn.. careful... HDD-Driver.. one time was actually trying to backup my OS HDD... I knew this 'cause I was taking extremely long.. and I was looking at the backup file... where I saved it... and it had passed the 30 gb range.. so.. surely something wrong... (don't backup anything unless you see the invalid size error... ) if you don't get this error.. then don't back it up unless you see the the partitions.. and information.. like the files in the xbox.. on the left panel...

ok... it finished backing up?... good.. put in the replacement drive.. remember we used hddprepar?.. lol.. this is gonna fool HDD_Driver into thinking it's the xbox HDD again...  well replace the xbox OEM HDD with this one.. with the same jumper settings...set it on master... go to device manager and refresh the devices... until you see the new drive... if you don't you might need to reboot... it should then work...

Back in windows.. or already in windows...ok... now.. run HDD-Driver... it's gonna say that invalid size error.. I am almost definetly sure about this one... ok.. now... don't click ok to the error.. just go to restore.. and select the backup file of the original xbox...  and then you will have some options.. to restore the whole hdd or other sections of the drive... u will see what I mean... if you didn't have any saved games before... just click on system restore part... other wise click whole.. the system restore.. goes so fast...lol.. like 5 mins... and you're done...  ok.. hey.. guess what you got and exact replica of your xbox OEM HDD except.. u need to lock it now...

reboot with a bootable floppy.. for me.. it was M$98 startup disk.. used command prompt.. and slide the hdd utilities into the drive and type atapwd.. u'll now see the new HDD.. if you don't just... refresh the screen again... ok... press Esc.. then run hdlock.exe

ok select the # that corresponds to your new drive and then... enter the password.. u got from live info... u have two different keys on you by now... u have the xbox OEM HDD key and the replacement HDD key that was generated by liveinfo... ok.. do as above.. lock your drive.. before you press enter make sure it matches exactly what liveinfo gave to you... and.. it's gonna create a text file in the floppy containing these utilities.. save it... on another computer or something...hey.. u did it .. your replacement drive is locked... verify with atapwd to make sure...

take the replacement drive and slide into xbox... don't forget to put as cable select.. and turn the xbox on.. without a  game and it should... load the M$ dashboard...

that's it... it worked for me.. it took me two days to get this... it was all HDD_Driver's fault... it wasn't actually reading my xbx OEM HDD... but now that I see it.. it shouldn't take more than 1 hr of your time if you know exactly what you doing... hey my xbox.. I never put a modchip on it.. I never soldered anything.. that thing ...the only thing I touched was the HDD... now.. it has my WD80 gb HDD no modchip.. just playing around with complex loader... peace out..

How can you figure out if it will lock or not?

I think my 30GB drive that I am backing up is a Western Digital... But so is my Xbox HDD...

Well, I made it to the part where I have to "Restore" my new HDD.

I use hdprepar on the drive, zero the first 4096 sectors or whatever, but HDD_Driver doesn't see it as an xbox harddrive. I chose the Restore option regardless and the little Status window is running. Let's hope it's not restoring to my OS harddrive  ohmy.gif That would suck so bad.

I never did, and still cannot get hdprep to write a HDD so HDD Driver thinks its an Xbox HDD. I always have to hex-edit offset 0x600 to BRFR.

Maybe hdprep doesn't work on some PCs.

Can i anyone tell me where those lock files are located in xbox's harddrive because i cant unlock my original xbox harddrive with unlockx or hdunlock even if i have the right key from evox backup folder, so i was thinking about hotswapping the original drive and then i would make a backup of it with hdd driver and then restore the backup to my new harddrive, i was just thinking that will the new drive be locked then also, If the restore copys all the stuff including bootrecords and that kind of stuff.
Does anyone know how i could install new harddrive in a safe way so that the only option for unlocking is hotswapping.

Eh the key Evox gives you is not always the right one...I had the same problem too. Just connect your OEM xbox HD to your pc, use the Liveinfo program with the eeprom.bin that evox makes in the backup folder and that will give you the correct key.

btw, you only need to lock your new hard drive to run xblive.  I currently have a 120GB maxtor replacement, not locked, and play originals and backups, booting to MXM just fine.

I can also run the MS dash to set HDTV and audio prefs as well.

I've got a 120GB drive locked in the xbox, and it is booting Evox via bert:reloaded and Phoenix bios loader.  I used a method similar to the method goku described -- I did a hotswap in some places where he did not, but basically I first used HDPrepar and then I used HDD-Driver by Toggg to restore the xbox backup onto the new hdd.  Then I locked the drive with the new key generated by liveinfo.  The xbox will boot ok, run phoenix, and launch evox.  The first time I did the restore, it did not load the games and applications on my e: drive.  I used evox to format my F: drive, and since I accidentally reformatted c: as well I restored the HDDDriver backup again.  This time it loaded all the information on to my e: drive (games, apps, emu, etc.).

When I try to launch anything, however, Evox just returns to the menu.  It's like the XBE aren't signed or the BIOS isn't being patched/replaced properly.  But the system boots ok, and the same files on the original HDD work to run unsigned XBE.  Any suggestions please?

Hi. I bought a Maxtor 160 GB 7200 rpm harddrive, but it isn't lockable. Why must it be lockable? I don't care about Xbox Live. Do I still need to lock it?

BTW, I had to modified version of this posts instructions. What I did is that before I locked the replacement drive, I ftp'd >backups< of <c:> and <e:> of the original drive to the pc. Next, I reverted the >backups< fonts to "original". After that, while still in the evox dash, I hotswapped the locked original with the not locked, "restored" replacement(jumpered for "master", BTW) and ftp'ed the reverted <c:> and 007 save. I then locked it with hdlock.

Also, I couldn't get hdd_driver to recognize the replacement drive before hand, even after hdprepar (!), so I put the original HDD on and when I got the "found xbox" message, I didn't OK it. What I did is hotswap it with the replacement, scanned for device changes(xp recognizes it), then I restore on the replacement.

Now hdunlock doesn't work, so I booted evox to unlock it, booted dos on my pc, hotswapped it, and hddisable'd it.

Initial boot of the >locked< replacement HDD needs to have original fonts, or else it will give 06 error. I made that mistake, TWICE (!), and had to return it...........twice. (stupid, worthless hdunlock.)

Damn, that HDD_Driver pisses me off, but that's all there is(besides xlinux).

I decided at sometime during the ordeal to replace my maxtor 40gb in my pc with a 120gb seagate. Then, I put my old maxtor in the xbox. And finally, I took the old xbox seagate 10gb and put in the pc along side the 120gb. laugh.gif

Damn, trial and error is a pain in the ass. But now that I know how, that shit is easy, now. 40gb hard drive!! Woohoo!!

Does this mean I am no longer an xbox newbie? cool.gif

If you are going to open the Xbox up to change the hardrive you may as well just flash your TSOP, then you dont have to mess with this.
The only thing I see the Dash Exploit being useful for is so you don't need to open the box up.

so, I got the font exploit + phoenix loader working fine on my unopened xbox, but I am toying with the idea of replacing the 8 gig drive in the xbox,

you say if you flash the tsop then you dont have to mess with any of this ?

so you dont have to lock the hard drive to install it ?  what about formatting it in FATX format or whatever?   lets say I did flash the tsop, where is a tut. for adding a  bigger harddrive with a flashed tsop?

Is it possible to restore a Xbox Backup Image to a new lockable HD with HDD Driver like this..

I swap in my Xbox HD and HDD Driver will say it found it...
Then i disconnect the Xbox HD and connect the lockable one...and just simply restore the backup to my new HD with Driver?

Could I do that?
Also if that would work then I will have a 120 GB HD with 8 usable gigas like the original I guess..

Just curious...why is this 10x better than the 8-step no linux tutorial?  That one seems much more consise and easy to follow.

I'm not trying to insult Gokuss here, because he did a great job too...but maybe I'm missing something as to why the other tutorial is inferior?  Does it skip some sort of important step or mess something up?  I'm about to use the no linux method to upgrade to a better HDD.

ok, well #1 reason is cause it's incomplete. in like line 5 it referes you to anither tutorial, without even a hyperlink. if I wanted to print it out I'd have to put 2 or 3 tutorials together.

on the other hand this one is complete and easily printable. The way a tutorial should be. not to mention that in line 1 it lists all software needed, which is great.

it's not 10 times better, but it is better

I agree.  I think the no-linux tutorial is better.  It's just missing the info on unlocking and locking the drive.

HERE'S what you get with the NO-Linux package!!

NO need for xlinux!
NO need for hdprepar!
NO need to put BRFR at 0x600!
NO need for HDD Driver! Use any disk editor, or use Norton Ghost!
NO need to use NTFS for backup!  Works on 9x/ME!
NO need to backup at all (but you can if you want)!  No need to free up 8-10GB of space!  Faster!

Order yours today!  Moderators are standing by.

huh? both of these are "no-linux" tutorials, i'm just wondering why that other one was pinned instead of this one.

Well, the tut says you require Winhex (FULL VERSION) - sure, everyone's got that... If there are alternative free apps which do the job they should be mentioned.

And "NO need for xlinux!" - well, I think lots of people have used XLinux with the hd-swap thingy. If so, they allready have it.

Credits to all of you who post your experiences and tuts. The more of them the better. Guess there isn't a one-tutorial-fits-all  wink.gif

Ok, I did everything in the tut, I use the font exploit. I had to BRFR the HD because hdddriver didnt detect it. I locked the HDD with the key that live info gave me (calculated password of the new hdd) but when I put it in the xbox, I get error 06.... whats wrong? do I have to take the key from the .txt of the backup? or the one from the eeprom?

SELFXV

how do you reenable your hard drive (where E has a '+' sign under it)?  or is this even necessary?

answer: hdlock does this.

btw the HDDdriver back up took me 9 minutes. I had 3 games and xbox media player installed on it already with a ton of games.  Athlon 1 Ghz with 256 MB RAM, 20 GB HD.  Total size of backup "xbox.bin" 7.45 GB

On reboot with bigger hard drive connected for restore HDDriver does not see an XBOX hard drive

"Bad News. I could find No XBOX HDD. I searched from .Physical Device 0 to Physical Device 256"

what did I do wrong?

If I do not Press OK to this message I can go to Tools > Restore.
I get a "failed geometry" message. I pressed OK.
It then sent me to a Restore option page with serveral options.  I chose "Entire Drive"

It took about 5 minutes to finish. And then said "changes to directory structure will not take place until next reboot"

hope it did the correct drive  blink.gif

ran hdlock ONE TIME to get '+' under E
SELFXV

do I have to run hdlock again to get '+' under L

Ok before  I sew it up.

Maxtor 80.0 GB
D540X-4K

Maxtor P/N: MX4K080H4

turned on xbox and get  error 07.

I looked up Error 07 and it says "HDD Time out"

Xbox Errors

does anyone know where I went wrong or how to fix this?

dude come on. what do you think, really? think about it...anything in this process not go as planned? anything?

that's right, HDD_DRiver never recognized your drive, therefore your restore never worked. "Failed Geometry" is not a good message to get. it seems pretty obvious to me that your unlock did not work.

anyways..enough bustin your balls, what this tutorial forgot to point out is that you need to use hdunlock twice before it works. only then can you use hddisable to disable your HD. another option is use unlockX which does both these things in the same step.

- Double and triple check your password.
- CHeck the password that is automatically saved on the floppy disc and compare, did you lock it with the wrong code?
-  Make sure when using LiveInfo to get the password you load the EEPROM  before selecting your harddrive and writing down the password
- Make sure you disable the drive and it worked, L and E should both have '-' under them or something's wrong

next time, make sure the drive is locked before booting windows, after you unlock and reboot, run atapwd one more time and double check. although if the E had a '-' under it after unlock then you know it's ok.

To get HDdriver to recognize your new replacement drive, u will need to edit offset 1536 -1539 with "BRFR"
I too was trying to get HDdriver to restore a backup but it just wouldn't recognize the new drive. Looked at the oem xbox drive and saw that BRFR (as mentioned in TOOGG.doc) is located at x1536 not x600. You may want to do a search on your xbox drive and see if BRFR is at 1536 or elsewhere.

My Xbox is v1.0 purchased Dec 01. This may or may not work for you and as always I take no responsibilty if u fuck up.

laters.

qoute from liu511

now I just need to know what BRFR is and how to do what is mentioned above

BRFR reference
QUOTE
8- Ok, now you can unplug the xbox hdd from your pc
9- Open Winhex and Open your new disk in it
10- Go to offset 0x600 and write BRFR (at the right), so HHD Drive will think that is a real Xbox HDD
11- Open HDD Driver, It should be detect your new drive as an Xbox HDD
12- Click on ToolsRestore and restore the Entire Drive with the backup.bin image

ok so I went to www.google.com and got WinHex.  Installed it.

OK. In order to save edits on your harddrive you have to buy the program and register it

I will go back to the HDDriver restore and try to get it to recognize my hard drive.

It does after doing the winhex fix BRFR at 0x600 to the hard drive.

HDDriver recognized my hard drive. I restored my backup to the new hard drive. ran hdlock.exe ONCE.

then I checked it with atapwd.
there was a '+' E

I still get error 07

thanks for your help and patience

can you please edit your post up top and add a link to the other no linux method?

now I just need to know what BRFR is and how to do what is mentioned above

The clarity of these forums isn't always spot on.

If after you use HDPrepare, and HDDriver doesn't detect your new HD, you gotta do the following:

You need to go into a hex editor (I used winhex), and edit your new HD that you will soon be putting into the Xbox.

At 0x600, type in 'BRFR' (no quotes). Save your changes.

Now try HDPrepare. It should recognize it now.

This is what has been killing me all today, and finally worked.

Obviously, if you have the ability to hook up both drives (xbox and new hd) along with the HD holding your OS, you can just do a disk clone in winhex. Unfortunately, that wasn't an option for me, so I did the above.

Let us know if you're okay!

there's a list kicken around, it''s a bitch to find. there's also like a 30 page thread if you feel like wading through it.

easy way to tell if your drive is lockaable is download atapwd, run a DOS boot disk, once in dos run atapwd of the same floppy, you'll see your drives, on the right it says SELFX, if there's a '-' or '+' under E, L and F it's lockable.

you don't need to connect all three drives, you just make a backup with HD Driver then use that image in clone disk, worked for me.

the other no-linix tut is exaclty that, you clone disk with all 3 plugged in using winHEx.

BTW, there's no point in using winhex instead of hd_driver to make a backup. HDD_Driver makes identical backups as Winhex.

I'm thinking you may have locked it with the wrong password?

thanks for the heads up on the BRFR.  I had tried that. but I did not RERUN hdprepare.

I wasnt aware that I needed to rerun it. I just ran HDDriver and it found the HD.

the reason you run hd prepare in the first place is so HDD_Driver will recognize it, so obviously it works without re-running it

what this tutorial forgot to point out is that you need to use hdunlock twice before it works. only then can you use hddisable to disable your HD. another option is use unlockX which does both these things in the same step.

I have never run hdunlock two times in a row. why would you do this if ATAPWD says '-' for L

blink.gif yes it appears that I was reading the little lable on the maxtor hard drive upside down or backwards or how every you want to put it.

you think I would have noticed this since the tutorial clearly says

good.. put in the replacement drive.. remember we used hddprepar?.. lol.. this is gonna fool HDD_Driver into thinking it's the xbox HDD again... well replace the xbox OEM HDD with this one.. with the same jumper settings...set it on master... go to device manager and refresh the devices... until you see the new drive.

and it kept on popping up as secondary slave in the bios and it kept on showing in hdunlock and hdlock and hddisable as item #4. grr.gif

so I took it off of the jumpered slave... (which would be conflicting with the xbox CDROM) and put it on master and BOOM booted right up.

I used winhex to make the backup of the xbox HD and then retore it to the new drive.

I bet the HDDriver backup and restore would work but it would require the hex editing step of the new drive at 0x600 adding 'BRFR' on the right

SO it works.  thanks to all that bothered to read. I will try and help out with the other error 07s

Addendum: For those of you following this thread you will want to format your new space.
All that needs to be formated is F parition.

see URLS below (not sure how to do backslashes in forums)

here are the urls with pictures and reasurance.

good to hear man.

i spent 2 days bangin my head against the wall cause i didn't know to unlock my harddrive twice before trying to disable it. mine's a maxtor 120gb, so i guess it depends on the HD.

this is a quote from the HDD_DRiver nfo "The images the app creates are identical to what you can get with Winhex, so if you've already imaged the drive with that, you should be ok."

I used winhex to open my bin file, used that as a clone and it worked fine for me. are you sure you selected SHow All Files? I used version 9.sumthin
