Recommended config: (or at least what worked for me) for least trouble:
-primary hd as only drive on primary ide channel
-xbox hd as only drive on secondary

though I have gotten it to work on my ata100 port before, you might as well try this out
both ide ports support harddrives.  it isn't detected for some other reason (I got this before too. follow these steps, and above all, try try again)

what I did with my 2k machine:
-either master or cable select works.  I would recommend you leave it on cable select
-leave xbox power cable in harddrive, ide cable in harddrive
-let xbox boot to game menu or something that isn't going to use the harddrive too often
-boot up computer, as soon as possible (right after the vga bios, during memory test), press the Pause Break key, right next to the scroll lock key, above page up.
-after the computer's startup is paused, unplug the xbox hd cable and plug in the one from your computer.
-hit any key to continue
-check and see if the bios detects the harddrive.  if it doesn't check all the steps and try again.

My pc finds the hard drive (i see the hard drive in my device manager) but hdd_driver wont find it? I downloaded winhex and it sees it but i cant do anything with winhex because its a trial version....Is my drive still locked or is hdd_driver really buggy?

I have been able to get my computer to the Bios Configure screen on my Windows XP Pro machine by holding down the F1 key as I turn on my PC. Does anybody know how I should configure my Bios at this point (specfic menu options)?

Also, my way of checking to see if the hard drive has been detected by Windows is looking under "My Computer." With all the efforts I have made I have only seen the C drive. Is there some other way of determining that my Xbox hard drive has been detected. How do I know if the bios has detected it?

well there should be four options, all usually set on auto, for primary master, slave, secondary master, slave.  hit enter twice for the option where it says auto, and if it detected it, auto will be replaced with what the drive returned as it's model number.

So I should set my second IDE Master to auto and leave the 1st IDE master as is?

They should all ideally be on auto, it's just hitting enter on one of those settings twice just refreshes and shows you what results it got when it checked what was the master / slave on that channel.

So if I were to hit enter twice on the secondary master where the Xbox hard drive is connected, this would be my way of determining whether or not my PC is able to detect it?

The Bios Configure screen when I boot up my PC recognizes the hard drive, but HDD loader still does not. I am fine with using xLinux, but is there a way to backup the hard drive?

of course, if you see the files you can back them up
NOTE: Linux only sees ext and fat partitions so if you dont have one there is no place to backup to.

hrm
yea what the fuck where they thinking you have to use the xbox hdd on the cd rom ide and you also have to boot from cd
seems impossible since they both need to be plugged in on boot to go through bios detection otherwise no OS will see them

If I were to copy my files from my Xbox hard drive to my PC hard drive, what commands would I enter in xLinux?

Luther349: Have you tried burning the image with DiscJuggler at optimal speed? This worked for me and I downloaded from xbins.  Also, if the disc won't boot, try unplugging the IDE cable from your floppy drive. I had configured the Bios to look to the CD drive first, but it still seemed to always go to the floppy, so this seems to have done the trick.

But getting xLinux to boot isn't quite the problem I am having. I need to know how to use this program (or any other that will detect my hard drive) to copy the contens of my Xbox hard drive over to my PC. Could anybody tell me what commands to enter (I am new to Linux) or even another program capable of backing up an Xbox hard drive and how to use it? I tried WinHex, but that didn't recognize my hard drive either.
