Title: Guide To Installing Free-x/evox Using Xlinux
Post by: bobby921 on January 01, 2004, 04:14:00 PM
I get a wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hda1 error when I type the command mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /cdrive/.  I figured it was because my c drive is partitioned in ntfs format. So then I put the bert files on my e drive which is fat32 and got to the same step and typed mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /edrive/ but i still get the same error message. What am I doing wrong here?

I have used this tutorial and thought I did everything to the "T". But I haven't i guess I went to reboot my xbox after doing everything and it loads the funky bubbling xbox logo and then it looks like it wants to go into the menu system then it goes to good ole error 21. I tried to reboot it a few times with no luck. I decided to go back into the setup for xlinux and try to redo things but the drive seems to be in some type of lock. xlinux says it has unlocked something but you can locate the drive to mount it anymore once you get to the prompt. Hdc51 is gone. If anyone can help me to fix this i would be very grateful.

ok I found i couldnt mount my hard drive due to it being ntfs, so I burned everything to a sperate cd and tried mounting that, i get no error but when i boot my xbox (this is after i go through everything the tut says.) it comes up with the xbox logo. MS comes up under it like it has found something but then it goes to the service screen (error 21). I think i might have to do something different since im working off cd and not the hd. Can someone please post the steps and commands required to use a cd with the hacks instead of the hd? I am a complete n00b when it comes to linux.

Okay, I got everything now, and my versions are

Xbox =1.1
Dash = 5659
Kernel =5101

I know I'm way off what has worked for you, but lets see if it works on these versions and more people will know what versions this works on...

all I need to know is, do I need Evox X ? If so, Do I copy it as well with Xlinux commands or what?

MOST IMPORTANT QUESTIONS..

1. Is the PC on when I connect the xbox hdd up to it?uhh.gif

2. Do I leave the power cable from the xbox in the xbox hdd and take out only the ide cable? and trail my pc's ide cable from there to the xbox hdd while the hdd is still powered on by the Xbox.?uhh.gif

If anyone could answer any of these questions I would appreciate it very much.

Thanks for this tutorial in advance and any replies..

I also have the problem of not being able to mount my drive because it is ntfs. How can I get around this? Kyle_A, what version xbox are you using?

Actually I got this working. My problem was my msdash was the latest and couldnt do the exploit. I had to downgrade my dash first (downloaded it from a person with a moded box) before I could do it. To do this I burned the downgrade to a cd, hotswaped my hard drive, then I mounted my hard drive and cdrom using xliunx.

In order to mount a cdrom this is what i had to do to mount
mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdb /cdrom

to mount the xbox drive I had to...
mkdir /xbox
mount -t FATX /dev/hdc51 /xbox

Once they were mounted I went to my CDrom
cd /cdrom

And copied all the dash files over to my xbox HD
cp -rf * /xbox

This ovewrites all of the newer dash files with older ones. Then I put my xbox Hardrive back in the Xbox and started it back up. It came up with the downgraded dash. I then Uses Return to Castle Wolfenstein to upgrade to he dash just like in the tutorial. These are the steps I took to transform the Xbox into a HaxBox. I used the Pheonix Bios loader with bert and ernie .xtf files.

mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdb /cdrom

mkdir /xbox
mount -t FATX /dev/hdc51 /xbox

cd /xbox/fonts
Rename Xbox.xtf and Xbox Book.xtf files

This copies hack to xbox
cd /cdrom
cp -rf  * /xbox (i think this is the command to copy correct me if im wronge)

move bert and ernie to your fonts folder (no need to rename them) then unmount all drives.
put hd back in xbox and reeboot xbox.

You should now be looking at the evox screen.

I have the newest dash as well and a version 1.0 kernel 4043 xbox. Just today i put in Splinter cell and went to the downloads part. It updated my dashboard but since i had my xbox hooked up to my lan which has an internet connection, it downloaded the latest dash from the net. I dont know anyone with a modded xbox so im not sure what to do. Are the older dashboard files small enough to email? All your help is greatyl appreciated. Ive spents hours trying every method and reading every tutorial with no luck. If only hdd driver would bloody work! Is there any exploit which would work on the newest dash? Thanks in advance.

No no exploits will work with the newest MS dash, and the old msdash files are about 40mb with audio files ziped (well the ones sent to me were). Im not sure where to get the dash files except for slayers disk. I do not know where to get slayers disc though. I believe I saw an original msdash download in the THC hacked dash irc channel.

The exploit I planned on doing was the splinter cell savegame exploit. It seemed simple enough. Only problem is the invalid file size error in hdd driver. I even tried using a hex editor in order to get the driver read by hdd driver but that didnt work. I guess this is because of the new dash. So the only thing left i can do is somehow downgrade my dash? Once you have the file, could you just copy it over in xlinux? If so, i suppose i could copy the savegame exploit from xlinux as well. xlinux seems like my only option when it comes to manipulating the xbox harddrive. Would doing the xlinux method above succesfully mod my xbox? Thanks for your help KYLE_A

Wow, after 4 days of having nothing but hassles I finally got it working! I downloaded Slayers disc and extracted the dashboard files from the ISO. I then used XLinux to copy them over. I copied bert.xtf and snufflapagus.xtf to the fonts directory and copied default.xbe, evox.ini, and a skins folder to the C: of the XBOX. All those files came from Bert_is_Cheating_on_Ernie_-_The_Phoenix_Project.rar. Now when I turn on the Xbox I get to the Phoenix Evox screen. I guess the hard part is all done now. One question, Can I use Slayers disc to rebuild and set up my drives or do i need a modchip installed for that?

Hey guys.. im having some trouble using xlinux. i accidently overwrited some files on my xbox using xlinux. The files I overwrited was Xbox Book.xtf, Xbox.xtf. They are switched with my bert.xtf and ernie.xtf and renamed alrdy. BOTH of them were screwed  up.

The one in my fonts folder and the one in my main xbox directory are both exploits xtf's. The problem with this is that the main directory of the xbox is suppose to have the original xtf's (i think) and the fonts directory is suppose to have the xploited xtf's. To make things short...

I downloaded slayers, and extracted the iso, then using the supplied Xbox.xtf and Xbox Book.xtf, i extracted them to my xbox hdd in the main directory...BUT...

After that, i went to the fonts folder and i c all these files and crap and i cant delete them...Its all the exploit files that i couldtn delete becuase it wouldnt let me since it says its a directory not a file...  but it is a file... Seeing that is i'll show u the layout in my fonts folder on my xbox...

Fonts>Xbox.xtf, Xbox Book.xtf, Xbox.xtf, bert.xtf, ernie.xtf....

since theres all those xtf files... i found out that u dont have to rename the bert and ernie files since they are xtf files and the XBOX SEARCHES FOR XTF FILES...
This means that i cant get the exploit working if i cant delete those files cuz it says they are directories....

So im thinking is there a way in xlinux where there is such a command that well enable u to delete the fonts folder in the xbox hdd???

i cant rename the files either cuz it give me that stupid crap where its not a file, its a directory ( that aint what exactly it says but close enough)

so if anyone knows the commands to delete a folder using xlinux, no matter what is in the folder....????

First of all, i found that the tutorial needs to be revised to properly reflect the different versions of the xbox, because i am very pissed that i followed them to a t, along with reading about 20 pages of littered posts, and my xbox is promently fucked. If people are going to follow a guide, i suggest it be kept throughly up to date.

I've followed the directions using ernie reloaded, now my xbox gets past the startup, and loads a grid then reboots. It does still play games though. I've come to the point where i cannot hotswap the xbox HD anymore, i've tried letting it sit at a load save screen on a while, then hotswaping it to no avail.

Since i cannot hotswap, what are my options?
-would getting a modchip installed with an autoboot cd fix it?
-would the 007 hack work, mainly, would i be able to copy from the memory stick to hd at bootup?

You cannot get a game save hack on there if you can't reash the msdash. A modchip would always work yes, but it shouldn't be needed.

Try pulling the DVD ide-cable before booting. This will let your xbox reach and error 12 (or is it 13?) and you xbox will sit there with the HDD in an unlocked state. Then hotswap and use linux to fix your hack or restore your fonts.

BTW. For anyone having trouble with xlinux and NTFS drives, check my sig. for information on xboxhdm. Also consider this for a more user-friendly xlinux...

Well it's hard to say whats wrong in this case. Could be corrupt files, could be missing setting (xip) files....
You did remove the bert and ernie files right - and checked that the original font files were uploaded correctly ?
If you made a complete working backup of your C-drive before softmodding, try replacing your current files with this. Or get Slayers Evox and replace your C-drive with the one you find if you extract this iso.

Ok quick question...... I was able to boot up, no errors, and did the mkdir /xbox fine and did the mount command.  When I tried to swich to the fonts directory it said that the specified location does not exist or something similar to that, basically no folder "fonts" exists.  What did I do wrong?  Or what am I missing?  I followed the directions step by step.  I dont know if this makes any difference but  I have my cd rom as master slave, regular hd as master, and xbox hard drive alone on the second channel on cable select.  Does it matter if I have the xbox hd set up on cable select, master, or slave, as long as its on its own ide cable?  Thanks in advance.

I have a problem with the installation of the Bert/Ernie exploit via XLinux. I am all good with the hot swap and loading XLinux and accessing the exploit of which I burned to another CD. My problem comes in that I misnamed the Xbox Book.xtf file. I thought it was named XBox Book.xtf instead the former.

So, somehow I have two files called Xbox Book.xtf and one more file called XBox Book.xtf. These are in addition to the renamed exploit Xbox.xtf file. I backed up the two original .xtf files in the same directory (I renamed their original extensions to .old) I've tried to rename the duplicate files to different extensions, delete them and tried to move them to another directory only to get a 'not a filename or directory' (not necessarily the exact wording) error. Are ther any other commands in /bin that I can use to somehow rename/move these busted Xbox Book.xtf files?

I've read through all the commands' help files that looked like they may have been applicable but nothing really seems to prove useful for me. I've read somewhere that I could delete these files via HDD_Driver (and for that matter just copy the exploits to the Xbox hd). HDD_Driver is of no use to me as I cannot locate a mfc042d.dll anywhere (i've googled, check MS, etc..).

My Xbox is a kernel:4034 and dashboard:4034 with a Thompson drive. Currently whenever I power it on it boots to the Xbox logo and 'MS' appears below it and the MS dashboard's green aura in the upper-right of the screen just starts to fade in and the unit resets and it repeats this cycle over and over. It will play games fine if they are inserted in the drive.

If anyone can help me out with another XLinux command aside from cp/rm/mv, some type of workaround or even an mfc042d.dll file I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance for any assistance,

Terry_Tang

This guide hasn't been updated for a long time. Since its release, XBOXHDM and the UDE, UDE2, or UXE exploits have far surpassed the aformentioned data. Do not expect any support from the Xbox-Scene forum concerning these exploits because they are outdated, buggy, and can total your Xbox.

Guide to installing Free-X/EvoX on an unmodded Xbox with the Bert is cheating on Ernie Hack with XLinux

This guide will guide you through installing the Bert is cheating on Ernie hack to your Xbox so you can run unsigned code on

it.  If a moderator or admin likes this I would love for them to sticky it so it can be shared with everyone to help out.

OK, disclaimer first:
What you do to your Xbox is your business and I simply give you this information for educational purposes only and I will not be held responsible for what you do to your xbox or anything that is a result of this procedure.

This is my first tutorial ever so bear with me.
I am writing this after having a hell of a time getting my xbox to run unsigned code without a mod chip.  I couldnt get the HDD Driver or the compiling a new Linux kernel method to work so I decided to try XLinux and it worked flawlessly.  I will share my experiences here and just let you know how to do it so you dont have to go through all the headahce I went through for this.  With this tutorial you wont need to go buy 007 or Mechassault or go get a Mega-x to copy the files to your xbox.

Ok this is what you will need Xbox-wise prior to starting tutorial:

NOTE: These are what i used.  If somebody else gets it to work on something else let me know and I will edit this info.
This is what you will need software-wise:
NOTE: I am not sure of the policy about posting where to get this software so I wont post it for the time being.  If someone will let me know what I can post about it that would be great.

I will edit later how to use the new reloaded hack instead of the original because the reloaded one has yet to be completely tested and I have been told it will not run originals.

OK here goes the procedure:
1.  Opening the Xbox and removing the HD
First off make sure that the xbox is unplugged.  If not bad things can happen to you or yourself.
You will need a torx 10, 15, and 20 size tools.  You can buy them normally in a set together at Lowes, Home Depot, True Value, Fry's, or any other hardware or computer store.

a)
Use the torx 20 tool to open the xbox.  There are 6 screws holding it together on the bottom, 4 under the "feet" and two under the stickers.  After that just lift the top of the xbox off.

cool.gif
Next we will remove the HD out of the xbox.  Underneath the IDE ribbon is a screw, use the torx 10 to remove it.  Lift the HD tray up and out, you may have to pull the power cord from the tray first to lift it.

c)
Now we will remove the HD from the tray to make it easier to take out the IDE cable.  There are 4 screws on the sides of the tray (2 on each side) remove them.  Your HD should be able to be lifted out of the tray now.

d)
Move the HD with the tray out of the xbox and set it to the side with both the power and the IDE cable still connected.  We will use this in a second.

If you have problems opening it read this tutorial up until you remove the HD: http://www.xbox-scen...icles/open1.php
It has some great pictures and can help out a lot with this part.

2.  Prepping your computer for the Exploiting of the Xbox
a)
You will need to burn the XLinux iso to a cd using nero, roxio, cdrwin, or whatever burning software you use.

cool.gif
Unzip the Bert is Cheating on Ernie hack to a directory on your HD.  Preferably to one at the root directory on your first HD, this will make it much easier later on.

Ok now you are ready to hot swap the drives and put the exploit on the xbox.

3.  Hot Swapping the Drives
a)
Connect your xbox near your computer.  And turn it on.

cool.gif
Let the it boot into the dashboard and let it sit for a good 5 or 10 minutes just to be safe that the HD isnt accessing data.

When this time is up then go to the next step.

c)
Insert the XLinux cd into your CD-ROM drive.  And shut down your computer.  At this point take everything off of the second IDE cable and just let it dangle outside of your computer and within reach of the xbox HD.  Now turn your computer back on.

d)
Before continuing make sure that the CD will boot on your computer.  If needed then go into your bios and set the boot order so that the cd will boot.

NOTE: As of right now the XLinux cd doesnt support USB keyboards so make sure that you have a PS/2 one.  This was a problem I had and had to borrow a keyboard from my roommate.

e)
Right AFTER the IDE detection of drives occurs hit the Pause/Break key on your keyboard.  Its on the upper right above the Page Up key if you dont know where it is.

WARNING:  Before attempting this you should back up your Xbox Hard Drive.  This can be done using the HDD Driver tool (can be found on megagames.com in their xbox tools section) in Windows.  To do that just boot into windows and run it.  It will tell you that it found a xbox HD.  Hit OK on any error messages that may pop up.  Now go to tools and Backup HDD and set a location.  Go take a break and come back and it will be backed up.  Now just restart 3. and continue on.  If you dont do this and fry your xbox dont say that I didnt warn you.

f)
Now is the moment of truth!!!!
Be very careful and unplug the IDE cable from the xbox HD and plug in the one from the computer into it.  Dont touch the bottom of the HD where all the chips are or you might fry it.  Make sure you pull the cable out fast or else the HD will remain locked.

NOTE: Keep the xbox on from now on until I tell you to turn it off.

g)
Now hit a the space bar or enter on your computer and it will continue to boot up and load the XLinux boot loader.  Now continue on.

4.  Copying the data

a)
Hit enter at the boot loader screen and it will boot into linux.  You should not see any error messages during the boot.  If you did then turn off the computer and over the hot swap from 3. above until it works correctly.  This means that you didnt do it fast enough or for some reason the HD remained locked.

cool.gif
After the booting is complete then you will be at a prompt.  This is the Linux prompt for you Linux newbs out there.

c)
Type the following commands and hit enter after each:

CODE
mkdir /xbox

CODE
mount -t fatx /dev/hdc51 /xbox

NOTE: They are case sensitive so dont put in any caps or anything funky like that.

You shouldnt see an error message.  If you do then start over at 3. because the drive is either still locked or something has gone wrong.

d)
Type the following commands and hit enter after each:

CODE
cd /xbox/fonts/

CODE
mv Xbox.xtf Xbox.old

CODE
mv "Xbox Book.xtf" "Xbox Book.old"

Make sure you use the quotes or else it wont work.  Once again it is case sensitive.  This backs up the files in case you want to revert back later.

e)
Now you will mount your hard drive to access the exploit files.  To do so type the following commands:

CODE
mkdir /cdrive

CODE
mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /cdrive/

CODE
cd /cdrive

f)
Now you must get into the directory where you unzipped the files to earlier. Type "cd" (without the quotes) then the first 3 or 4 characters of the directory then hit the tab key.  It should finish typing it for you.  If not type a few more characters in and keep hitting tab after each and it will eventually finish typing it out for you.  This is called tab completion for you non-Linux people.  Hit enter after this.

g)
Type the following commands in EXACTLY as below:

CODE
mkdir /xbox/Skins
cp -rf * /xbox/
cd /xbox
mv bert.xtf fonts/
mv snuffleupagus.xtf fonts/

This copies the files to your xbox HD and puts them in the right place also.

Well now you have all the stuff on your xbox HD that you need and all you have to do now is clean up.

h)
Type the final commands below:

CODE
umount /xbox

CODE
umount /cdrive

CODE
halt

This will shut down your computer.  Turn the xbox off now.  Unplug the IDE cable from the xbox HD and put the original back

on.

5.  Finishing up
a)
Now just reassemble the xbox.

cool.gif
Turn it back on and if you did everything correctly you now will see the Evolution X instead of the normal dashboard.  If this is the case congrats you have completed it and now go enjoy your new system.  If not then read below.

c)
If this is not the case that means something is messed up and you will have to restore your xbox HD and start over.  Follow Step 3 again except boot into Windows and load up the HDD Driver tool.  On the tools menu go to Restore HDD and select the file you backed it up to earlier and hit ok on the next screen and wait.  It will restore your drive and you can start again in an attempt.

OK if there are any suggestions or things that need to be changed let me know and I will update this tutorial.  I hope I have helped you out with it.

no u dont have to solder the points and flash the tsop.  this uses the free-x exploit so its not needed to flash anything, so technically all u have to do when u open ur xbox is to hot swap it.

Thanx for your guide Man!!  tongue.gif
I think this one should be a sticky since you explain a lot about Xlinux and everything.
This really helps people that for some reason cant get HDD Driver to run or just get the infinite File Size Error  smile.gif

For those who dont know abput Xlinux
Xlinux come in a rar file and is a 20 MB ISO image that can be burned with Discjuggler and booted through the CDROM.
Just make sure you modify your BIOS so it will boot from the CDROM.

So Khirok you used the Ernie and Bert Reloaded Font hack with the Free-X default.xbe?
Please could you tell me how do I setup my PC`s IDE Cable so it will recognize my PC and Xbox HDD at the same time?
I have my main HD in Primary Master..my CDROM as Primary Slave and finally my Xbox HDD as Secondary Master..
Is that setup OK  uhh.gif

QUOTE

ok, i am glad u brought this up i made a mistake in my guide and i will fix it.  u need to have the original bert is cheating on ernie hack also and included in there is a default.xbe and u will need that one to boot up evo-x.

im too tired to read everything(its 4:15am) but you go through a hellof alot of extra steps to swap the hard drive.  i mean all i gotta do is pause as fast as possible(so it happens BEFORE detection) and then switch the ides without taking anything out of the xbox(i already have evox booting so there is no need to wait 5 minutes)
i think this tutorial is great though

thanks man, yeah i had to pause it after the detection for xlinux though.  not sure why this is, but it would not let me do it if it actually detected the drive cause that apparently locked it cause xlinux didnt like it at all.

with this tutoriali am just letting the drive sit there just in case cause i have blown up a few too many pieces of hardware in my day and am just a little over-careful when it comes to a $200 piece of equipment.  and i am also assuming that it is just a "virgin" xbox with nothing done to it yet and it boots to the m$ dashboard.

Ok dude. The Bert & Ernie reloaded seems to load my original discs just fine. (Halo and Ghost Recon)

xilicio yes it does matter that you Hot Swap AFTER the pc goes through it's routine device detection. There's no way you'll know until you get a command prompt and through the first few commands.

What Kernel and Dash are you running xilicio?
Title: Guide To Installing Free-x/evox Using Xlinux
Post by: xilicio on July 12, 2003, 03:12:00 AM
Im have the following

Kernel 4034
Dash   4920

My dashboard was upgraded through XBL (it was recommended though)
From what I have read..those are pretty compatible with the Exploits..
What about Snake? what have you got?

Kernel 4034
Dash 4034

biggrin.gif I know.. I took a huge risk with 4920 but it started out when i found out I can access hotswap via xlinux.. HDD Driver wasn't a option since i'm on WinME but I wanted to look at the the xboxhdd out of curiousity and decided to install Bert & Snuff when I saw the font files in the root folder.. might as well while i'm there.. to better the world by taking these risk and letting the community know I actually didn't need a live update.

Other than that. I just hex edited a copy of the old MS Dash to run through evox.. it works pretty well too.. so far.. everything works.. even against my odds.. very perculiar though..

Go to #xbins..acces their ftp...there you will find everything up to date

@Khirok

You should upgrade your guide Khirok..I found a little flaw
You said we need to put all the xploits in the root directory ©
I did that and when I insert this command ins xlinux
cp -rf * /xbox/
It copies all the subdirectories too...(Program Files/Docs/etc)

One Q here..
I have Xbox Book.xtf and Xbox.xtf both in /XBOX/ and XBOX/Fonts...what??why?
Also how do I move default.xbe to /XBOX/ you didnt explain that either..

Anyway your guide is great and probably the best for Xlinux!

i said unzip it to a directory NEAR the root directory not the root directory.  i will update the guide later and make this more clear.

QUOTE
One Q here..

ok it keeps a copy of those files in both places cause older games that use the files in the root directory.  when u updated your dashboard it made that fonts directory.  so they must keep it backwards compatible so they put it in both places.  i am not sure if it is needed to keep it in the root directory or not, i have yet to hear of any problems with it not being there.

QUOTE

Now I have an odd problem..

EvoX shows up but my Xbox LED is flashing red constantly...
Is it because the Xbox is overheated? or I installed the Xploit the wrong way?
Khirok is it normal?..that red flashing light..also when I insert an original game(Splinter Cell) and i try to boot it from EVOX it gives me an error 21  dry.gif ...
Do you have my same situation?

@BoomDivx

You gotta make sure the Xbox is the IDE SLOT #2 without any devices..
In IDE 1 you should have your PD HD as Master and CDROM as slave..
The Xbox must be Secondary Master

Ok now do this..as I did

Boot your PC without the XBOX HDD connected
When XP boots..turn on your Xbox and wait 7-10 mins
Now do the Hot Swap trick...do it fast so the HDD wont get locked
Then go to Control Panel and try to find hardware.
If nothing happened dont worry..just make sure XP looks for the new hardware
Now open HDD Driver and it should say it found the Xbox HDD

its fairly easy to hotswap if you know what you are doing.. i suggest the majority of you who are new to linux .... just hotswap into xlinux without using any "mv" or "cp" commands .. read this tutorial carefully and learn to navigate both xbox HDD and pc hdd and see how they are done and understand how they are done.. other than that have fun..  biggrin.gif

khirok you didn't mention after copying over the font files that to umount /xbox you need to type in cd / to get out of the xbox directory.. took me a good 10 seconds to realize what the  linux equavilent of cd.. in dos was.. to others possibly they'll try to umount and get drive is in use error and shut down without umounting..

ls: dir list

@brandonopolis

Me too hehe...I havent got a DVD-RW but I do have a nice CD-RW burner with some CD-RWs hehe
Im wondering if I can run backups from the HDD
Also make sure you back up your Xbox or else you`ll be really sorry

@Khirok

Do you know how to copy a special file (msdashboard.xbe) to my PC`s Hdd so I can edit it?
Is it possible..

brandonopolis/xilicio:

Yes you can backup your original discs onto the xbox hdd.. possibly two or more games depending on what size they are.. kinda fun hacking halo with a trainer.. brings new fun to such a great game.. some games are small as well like MvsC2 .. about 200 megs?

xilicio:

have you gotten your evox to ftp to your pc yet?? if so you should be able to copy your msdashboard to your pc already..

if you're still on xlinux..

cp msdashboard.xbe /cdrive/youfolder/subfolder/

couple little questions... i've been having so much trouble with the god damn HDD Driver program, first it was the infinite "Invalid File Size" error, then after fixing that with winhex everytime i renamed a file or clicked on a folder the damn program crashes... so tomorrow or later tonight i will be trying the xlinux method.

my questions are...

i have a 4034 dash and kernel... after renaming the 2 .xtf files... i just put bert.xtf and ernie.xtf (from bert and ernie reloaded) into the main directory (cause i dont have a font directory) ???

then... can i just use the Free-XEvo-X default.xbe + skins folder ??

and does that .xbe file just go in the main dir... (along with evox.ini obviously) ???

i also have the bert is cheating on ernie dist by the pheonix project... should i be using that default.xbe instead of the Free-XEvo-X one? altho i'm fairly sure there the same it'd be good to be 100% sure...

sorry if that doesn't make a lot of sence i'm just really confused with all this... i have completed the backup of my drive and i can do the swap trick with no problems... i just wanna make sure i get the finer details correct first go!

i would've just gone ahead and done the file transfers with HDD Driver.. but i just dont trust it and for some reason the Audio folder just turned into a whole bunch of weird characters after it crashed once... so xlinux is the way to go for me!

if you can help me with my questions above that'd be great!

Woohoo khirok about time this thread gets pinned.. congrats man.

Krisx. Fellow 4034 dashboard owner.

HDD Driver wasn't an option for my WinME OS. So luckily khirok has the perfect solution for aggravated users of HDD Driver.

You don't need the fonts folder that comes with dash 4920. Just backup the xbox.xtf and Xbox Book.xtf files in the root folder and copy over the exploited font files.

I didn't use the Free-X exploit nor the default.xbe file in it.

All I need was just the Bert is cheating on ernie exploit.

So copy over the Bert and Snuffleupagus files as xbox.xtf and Xbox Book.xtf as well as the default.xbe file with that exploit into the main root.

just don't touch the xboxdash.xbe folder as your xbox will boot that first and try to access the exploited font files. Those font files in return will direct to the default.xbe file.. took a while for me to realize how the process works.. other than that you should be able to load up evox perfectly.

One odd thing about this whole process though.. the bert is cheating on ernie exploit required that you needed a 4920 dash.. but i took the risk as well and had no problems.. if anything i think i had an advantage as that I was able to run the programs from xbins (xbmp.xcommander.a few emus) without even having to sign them with xbedump.

so good luck and tell me how yours runs.

Where can I find Xlinux?

And I have a kernel 4034 with 4092 - do I want to use the bert is cheating on Ernie patch or the ernie and bert reloaded?

Either way, just dump the 2 font hack files into the /fonts/ folder
and the whatever.xbe into the root of the drive, correct?

would be the same w/either patch from the looks of the files

anyone with experience on those versions want to confirm one or the other for me?

thanks

the 4034 version should work alright.  that is what most people have used so far.

QUOTE

the reloaded patch has a fix in it for the time resetting, so if u are able to use that one, but if not try the original.

thats pretty much the jist of it.  but make sure u backup and rename the font files first though or else u might have a problem later.

"CODE
mv bert.xtf fonts/

CODE
mv snuffleupagus.xtf fonts/

CODE
mv default.xbe fonts/

This copies the files to your xbox HD and puts them in the right place also.

Well now you have all the stuff on your xbox HD that you need and all you have to do now is clean up."
Don't you have to rename these files?

Ok, but the ernie and bert reloaded RAR i downloaded just has the 2 XTF files in it.

Can I just download EvoX and run whatever xbe it provides? Do I need a hacked dashboard? I'm clueless.

dubey apparently you sure as well didn't read the responses to this thread.

And unless you put the exploit files on your xlinux cd .. you'll need your pc hdd (with exploit files) to share the IDE cable that you currently have your cd drive. that's what the mount -t fatx /dev/hda1 /cdrive command is for.

and secondly you need to pause break AFTER your pc has gone through is routine ide device detection stage. you WILL NOT get any confirmation that your hdd was detected PERIOD until the xlinux boots up.

Man read the tutorial carefully once more and the replies as well.

What the heck are you doing having windows load up instead of xlinux???????

If you have access to your pc bios ... set it so that it loads the xlinux iso cd...

You have to pause break after the boot screen. Yeah I know some pcs don't give a screen telling you that it's running its scan for IDE devices.. but you will have to do it AFTER that which is sometimes right before xlinux or windows usually loads. that way it'll keep your xbox hdd unlock for which you can access..

you wont know that your xbox hdd is detected until xlinux loads up. I've said that more than once in this thread somewhere.

Let it all load and type in the mkdir /xbox and mount -t fatx /dev/hdc51 /xbox at the command prompt

if you don't see any errors .. that's when you'll know you can access your xbox hdd

just type cd /xbox the type ls to see the contents.. and you're set..

sorry guys those problems i do not know how to solve.  i would bet that the hard drives are still locked

and hdc51 is a partition on the xbox hard drive

hdxx in linux is something connected to an ide channel whether it be a cd-rom, dvd-rom, or hard drive

there is one thing i want to mention: i have gotten in the past 3 days over 50 emails of people asking how to get xlinux, i am ignoring all of them because it is mentioned on this board numerous times and if u would just go look for it u would find it.   i am not gonna say it cause i am not sure if i can on here or not, so i wont, but if u want to find it search on the board.  i am tired of my email space getting filled up by people that dont look on the board first.

This is interesting.

I've got xlinux, I've burned it using Fireburner, tried using Roxio, tried using cdrecord, and several other programs.

It burns with no problem, however it will not boot when I try to boot from it...instead, it simply starts up the boot sector of my primary HD.

Interestingly enough, if I put a Debian Install CD or a Mandrake Install CD in the same DVD-ROM drive, it boots from those.

If I load the xlinux CD in VMWare (a virtual machine program), it boots from it.

Any ideas? I'm thoroughly out. :-)

Thanks,
F.

Thanks Khirok, for this tut. First of all "sorry for my bad english"
I didn't follow your tut all the way, i just want to know what xploit to use. I have a linux server with the kernel 2.4.20 with fatx support compiled in, did the HDD "hot" swap, change the files, with a little modification, i've added the evolutionx_beta_v1.8.3752-Static skins, but used the default  default.xbe from "Bert is cheating on Ernie.rar".

Yes BABE!!!! It's running on my Xbox (JP) V1.0, kernel 4034(No live!). My question is:

I've done the TSOP http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/tsop.php (just closed the two points in front/back of the board, i haven't add the adcional 5v as the picture shows), now that my xbox is running with evox, how can i update my BIOS?

And witch BIOS should i use in it?

Thanks! rolleyes.gif

XILICIO,

Short Answer - Use the option -R (recursive)

Okay, I haven't tried this tutorial yet, I'm still reading, getting ready.  But I haven't used Windows since about '99 so I may be able to help w/ the linux commands.

If you've ever used DOS you know that commands also have switches, or in Linux lingo "options".  Options in Linux are tagged by a dash (-) and not a slash like in DOS.

cp = copy  -this will omit any directories in the path you specified.
  Xlinux#: cp /cdrive/fonts /xbox/fonts
If 'fonts' is a directory it will be omitted.  If there are any files in the directory 'xbox' they will be copied.

  Xlinux#: cp -R /cdrive/fonts /xbox/fonts
This will copy the folder /cdrive/fonts (and everything in it) to /xbox/fonts.  This puts a folder 'fonts'        inside the folder 'fonts', so (I haven't actually looked at the directory structure) I think what you want is

 Xlinux#: cp -R /cdrive/fonts /xbox

Like I said, I haven't tried it yet, but I can't imagine how Xlinux would have the cp command without the standard options.

LINUX COMMANDS HELP

Here's how to learn how to use a given command in linux:

Generally there is a "help" option.  To get this type either -h or --help after the command with nothing else.  Some commands use either or both and some commands don't have this option.  Most do though.. This just gives you a list of options with a short description.

For more in-detph info type 'man [command]' as in
 XLinux#: man cp

But (without even looking) I'd bet the XLinux distro doesn't have the man pages installed.  But you can google them "man cp" should give you a list of pages that have the man page for cp

Some commands with functions similar to cp are mv and dd.  dd is what you would use to make a backup of a drive since it makes an image.  There are specific instructions somewhere on the xbox-linux sourceforge page.

Hope this helps someone.

After 20 minutes my hard drive is still seeking.  I'm wondering if the posters who are have trouble unlocking their drive are experiencing the same thing.

I don't suppose someone knows a trick to force it to spin down when it's not mounted?

hmmm, I'm afraid to unplug the drive while can still hear it clicking.

The Xbox HD can be easily unlocked by these methods

1) Turn on your Xbox and wait `til the screen goes darker (usually 7-10 mins) then it`s unlocked
2) Boot a Xbox game and let in the menu screen..there it will be unlocked

kernel 4034
dashboard 4034

WORKS!

ok, with this dash there will be no fonts folder.  Thats okay I just put the fonts in the main directory as per the instructions that came with the original 'dayX' exploit.  I did not rename the bert and snuff fonts.  I think it's only important that the original fonts are not named *.xft.

The thing is, I now have to be careful about some numbskull putting an xboxlive game in my xbox cause that should kill it.  I didn't want to go out and rent a game to upgrade it though, and anyway, I've had this xbox for a year it's been about 8 months since I played any game.  PC games rock.

Thanks for the help all of you!

Will it work with any of those in that site? or you have to get this particular one (any links as to where that particular version is ?xbins has been down for a while) thanks.

okay i've put 'xlinux-1.2c.rar' (12,551,009 bytes) in my kazaa shared folder.  I'm sorry but that's the best I can do.

due to my job i'll be offline for a about 3 months starting, well any day now (i'm waiting for the phonecall).  so if i don't answer email please don't think i'm ignoring you.  zasadar it looks you're okay, but i did get your email.

if some sends me an ftp upload user:pass i'll send it to you, but like i said time is short for me.

Some advice:  read every post!  twice!

Khirok, i've a complement to your tut that i think it's incomplete, i've used xlinux v1.2 and did the swap trick and there is no /dev/hda51 because they dont exist.

First of all you have to check if the HDD was detected by linux, i've tested with RedHat 9.0+patched kernel, to do so, you have to make this command:

CODE

[root@server]# dmesg|grep hd

Kernel command line: ro root=/dev/hda3 idebus=33 ide0=dma ide1=dma ide0=autotune ide1=autotune parport=auto pirq=19,9,17,18,19,16,16
   ide0: BM-DMA at 0xf000-0xf007, BIOS settings: hda:DMA, hdb:DMA
   ide1: BM-DMA at 0xf008-0xf00f, BIOS settings: hdc:DMA, hdd:DMA
hda: Maxtor 51024U2, ATA DISK drive
hdb: FUJITSU MPC3084AT, ATA DISK drive
hdc: ST310211A, ATA DISK drive
hda: 19746720 sectors (10110 MB) w/2048KiB Cache, CHS=9795/32/63, UDMA(33)
hdb: 16514064 sectors (8455 MB), CHS=1027/255/63, UDMA(33)
hdc: 19541088 sectors (10005 MB) w/512KiB Cache, CHS=19386/16/63, UDMA(33)
hda: hda1 hda2 hda3
hdb: hdb1
hdc: unknown partition table

The above is from a BAD swap, if you did the swap correctly you should get this results.

CODE

[root@server root]# dmesg|grep hd

Kernel command line: ro root=/dev/hda3 idebus=33 ide0=dma ide1=dma ide0=autotune ide1=autotune parport=auto pirq=19,9,17,18,19,16,16
   ide0: BM-DMA at 0xf000-0xf007, BIOS settings: hda:DMA, hdb:DMA
   ide1: BM-DMA at 0xf008-0xf00f, BIOS settings: hdc:DMA, hdd:DMA
hda: Maxtor 51024U2, ATA DISK drive
hdb: FUJITSU MPC3084AT, ATA DISK drive
hdc: ST310211A, ATA DISK drive
hda: 19746720 sectors (10110 MB) w/2048KiB Cache, CHS=9795/32/63, UDMA(33)
hdb: 16514064 sectors (8455 MB), CHS=1027/255/63, UDMA(33)
hdc: 19541088 sectors (10005 MB) w/512KiB Cache, CHS=19386/16/63, UDMA(33)
hda: hda1 hda2 hda3
hda50 hda51 hda52 hda53 hda54
hdb: hdb1
hda50 hda51 hda52 hda53 hda54
hdc: unknown partition table

To create the devices, we need to have information from /dev/partitions
CODE

major minor  #blocks  name

 22     0    9770544 hdc
  3     0    9873360 hda
  3     1     307408 hda1
  3     2     256032 hda2
  3     3    9309888 hda3
  3    50    5000024 hda50
  3    51     512000 hda51
  3    52     768000 hda52
  3    53     768000 hda53
  3    54     768000 hda54
  3    64    8257032 hdb
  3    65    8249346 hdb1

Then you can create the devices

CODE

# mknod /dev/hda50 b 3 50
# mknod /dev/hda51 b 3 51
# mknod /dev/hda52 b 3 52
# mknod /dev/hda53 b 3 53
# mknod /dev/hda54 b 3 54

After that you will be able to mount the device with
CODE

mount -o rw -t fatx /dev/hda51 /xbox

But keep in mind that some motherboards will not detect the HDD if BIOS not detect it first, so i did this steps to unlock my HDD (i've found this here in xbox scene)

QUOTE

1. first unplug ide from xbox plug into secondary ide on pc (which
should have NOTHING else on it!!!)

2. i used xbox power for xbox HD, turned on xbox and of course youll
get the xbox needs service screen since the xbox ide cable is
disconnected, but the important thing is the drive has juice... ok now
turn on your pc with the 2ndary ide cable connected to xbox hd and
power from xbox, (isnt necesary to use xbox power but i found its
easier this way in the long run... )

3. let your pc bios detect the xbox HD, THEN pause it at LILO , or the
mandrake loader... hit pause on the keyboard (i just paused at
themandrake loader)

4.now turn off the xbox.... unplug ide cable from pc from xbox hd and
plug in the ide cable from the xbox back into the xbox HD

5. turn on the xbox with no disc in it and let it boot to the menu

6. once at the menu and xbox is fully booted, unplug ide from back of
xbox HD, but not power, plug up the secondary ide from the PC with
linux on it, which is paused at lilo (or mandrake loader) after you
have already let the pc bios detect the xbox HD. you should have
plugged it back up to exactly where it was when the pc bios detected
it, now hit enter let linux load up completely

7.voila, now your xbox hd is unlocked and loaded into linux

i wanted to clear up the hot swap because noone mentioned to let the
PC bios detect the HD if you dont do this before unlocking with xbox
then loading, 9 out of 10 PCs will not recognize the HD because it
wasnt detected by the bios....

I think it's all  tongue.gif

Maybe, if linux found the xbox HDD as /dev/hdc51, in my linux RedHat 9.0 is /dev/hda51(2, 3, 4) and one /dev/hdc. I've tried to create the devices hdc51(2, 3, 4) but it only mounts hda51... dry.gif

And i think to be impossible to mount an hdc device if is not listed in /dev/partitions. By the way, i've added an USB cable to my controler to have access to it by Xbox Action Replay using http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?act=ST&f=44&t=79198 information. Now i can upload any save game to my xbox memory card and then to my Xbox HDD.  pop.gif  jester.gif  love.gif

Amazing Grace!!
PS: You can grab the Windows drivers for your Xbox controler http://www.codeunderground.com/cucode.html

PS2: This stuff works with mame/nebula/kawalks too  biggrin.gif

Hi!

Nice tutorial. However, before I try this I want to be absolutely sure I'm prepared correctly. So, here are my thoughts:

This tutorial is based on use of the files from Bert_is_Cheating_on_Ernie_-_The_Pheonix_Project.rar (or similar), right? If true, at least in my dist there are more files than mentioned in the tutorial.

E:Bert_is_Cheating_on_Ernie_-_The_Pheonix_Project>ls -lo
total 8310
-rw-r--r--    1 Administ     5103 Jul  7 02:08 Bert is Cheating on Ernie by The PheoniX Project.nfo
drwxr-xr-x    3 Administ        0 Jul 23 19:39 Skin
-rw-r--r--    1 Administ       80 Jun  3 03:22 bert.xtf
-rw-r--r--    1 Administ   696320 Jul  5 19:53 default.xbe
-rw-r--r--    1 Administ     7912 Jul  7 01:59 evox.ini
-rw-r--r--    1 Administ  7798500 Jul  6 06:13 snuffleupagus.xtf

From my understanding, the two font files should replace the Xbox font files, and default.xbe should be placed in the root.
But what about the Skins folder and it's content (two jpg:s and one .ini file)? Are these mandatory?
And what about the evox.ini file, should this be edited before install or 1st boot? In this file there can be found IP settings, skin info etc... Or must this file - and all other - be copied just as they are to not mess upp any signing or other stuff?

Sorry if these questions seem dumb, but of all tutorials I have read so far this one appeals to me the most. The only thing missing imo is info about the rest of the files.

Maybe the tutorial should have a complete file listing along with checksums in order to avoid people from attempting modding with the wrong set of files? I know there must be tons of zip's and rar's with ernie's and bert's, and even snufflepaguse's out there, but my ernie & bert package was the only "cheating" package I found on xbins ftp....

Oh, and for the real n00b question, where do I find kernel and dashboard version?

Thanks!

2. When i come to step F i do as it says and tried that for 20 mins. First time only thing it worked on was my xlinux folder. I restarted, created "hacking" folder, put the files in there, re-swapped, started xlinux, did tehs ame thing and now it works on nothing. Not even xlinux. o_O

it's ok if you don't have a fonts directory, just put bert and ernie wherever the other XTF files are. If you don't have a fonts folder, then it just goes in the main "System" folder, c:

Great tut!

But, (there always a 'but' isnt there?)

When I type:
mount -t fatx /dev/hdc51 /xbox
it says:
QUOTE

root@xlinux:/# mount -t fatx /dev/hdc51 /xbox
mount: /dev/hdc51: unknown device

My HDD is DEFINATLY unlocked, as Xlinux is booting it even says loads of stuff about unlocking...bla bla and at the end it says:
QUOTE

!Unlocked

And also I can see the devices in the /dev folder so its definatly there.

Am I missing something here?
Im getting so fustrated and have been tripped every step of the way here, by one thing and another, but im so close, please help!

great tutorial. just wanted to point out a minor mistake. evox uses the Skin folder i believe not Skins

mkdir /xbox/Skins
should be
mkdir /xbox/Skin

although that mkdir isnt need i think because the cp -rf in the next step should take care of it.

Unless ofcourse you actually need Skins folder for something?

now i got a ghost file or something i cant use it any more any one know anything? i can see the file but i cant mv or rm it its crazy

keeper i wish i could help you the only thing i can gues is you didnt hot swap on right

boot up with the hdd so it can be detected then right before it boots off the cd pause it
then you unlock then let it boot you dont unlock it before detection do it after i see this allot i could not get it to work for me until i did this just BOOT UP WITH HDD IN FIRST IN YOUR PC THEN UNLOCK RIGHT BEFORE ANY OS

Keeper105, make sure you are seeing hdc51 in /dev and NOT hda51

If you dont see hdc51, the xbox hdd is still locked.

Urgh, but it said it was unlocked at in booting Xlinux up.

Its true I am seeing, the hda51-54 (or whatever numbers they are) and not hdc51

Also, I was wondering, Is there a techniqe to unlocking the HDD? I mean other then waiting for the screen to go black and yanking th IDE cable out as fast as you can?

I hear 2 whirring sounds every so often, sometimes its there, and sometimes it isnt, everytime ive tried with Xlinux its whirred, and ive only got it not to whir once, and I accidently booted to windows then sad.gif Is the whirring an indicator that it isnt unlocked yet?

Ok ive done it, but I think I may of messed it up, I have no backup games to test on it ATM, but my original games work fine, but one problem, I cant access the dashboard at all! I turn the power on, and the game boot up like normal, but if I open the try, it quickly shuts it, and I just have enought ime to put a disk in, before it closes, if there is no disk in, it sticks at the Xbox logo and opens the CD tray for you to put a CD in.

Is this normal behavour?
I didnt backup my HDD before doing this, as HDD_Driver didnt work.

Now if this isnt normal behaviour, there is a tool called, "Hard drive Prepare" If i run this toll and click on whole drive selection, will it fix it back to default?

looking farward to your answers!

nope im pretty sure you still need a backup for that its realy for setting up a new drive with evox installed and you need a mod chip to get hdd pass i think

the only thing i can think of for you to do is buy a mod chip make a evox iso then you can easly ftp to your hdd from your pc and copy the files you need

could it be that i must connect my xbox hdd to my primary ide? and could i disconnect my pc primary drive than?

btw. i know it's unlocked because hdd driver can detect it (but i can't work with files there, the program closes then)

(All comments below based on Khirok's original post..)

Isn't there an easier way to do this?  The current process is to do the HD Swap trick, boot to xbox-linux from your PC, and then copy bert/ernie files from the Windows partition to the XBOX HD connected to your PC...

Instead of doing all of that, couldn't you just boot xbox-linux from a CD on the XBOX and then SSH to the XBOX and copy these files?

Or can you not access the necessary partition on the XBOX HD when booting from an xlinux cd?  I'm thinking about trying this with dist-0.3.1.

I apologize if this is a stupid question.  I'm new to all of this and I'm just trying to figure out the easiest way to get evox running on my xbox without using a mod chip.

Thanks

I figured out a real quick way to unlock the HD, here's the steps:

- Plug the IDE cable from the PC into the xbox HD and boot the computer
- Wait until it detects the drives (it should see the xbox drive) then pause it
- Unplug the IDE from PC and plug IDE from xbox into HD
- Unplug xbox IDE from xbox DVD-ROM
- Boot xbox
- You will get error 12 because the xbox could not detect DVD-ROM
- The HD will make a noise and spin down, it is now unlocked
- Unplug IDE from xbox and hook it up to the PC again
- Continue booting into xLinux

I figured this out because I accidentally fried my DVD-ROM (literally, smoke and all) after I did the exploit and left the xbox off/unplugged for a while (because I had it apart) and when I turned it back on it kept rebooting because the clock was reset. I had to undo the exploit to boot M$ dash again and reset the clock then do it all again to re-do the explot.

I'm just lucky that there is a way to do this without booting to M$ dash or with a game. This should help you Blick Domain as it worked fine for me... i feel for ya with your busted Thompson Drive sad.gif

Thanks for that I'll give it a try.

The first time I tried to swap my drive it wouldn't stop spinning.

And since I can't load a game. I couldn't give that a try.

I really don't like the idia of pulling the IDE out a spinning drive.  sad.gif

mount: special device /dev/hdc51 does not exist!

I'm going to assume you haven't used linux before...
In most linuxes(i'm thinking xlinux is not too much different, but I haven't had a chance to try this yet) your harddrives are identified as such:
hda = primary master
hdb = primary slave
hdc = secondary master
hdd = secondary slave
etc..

hda1 is the first partition on the primary master, hda2 is the second, etc..

If your getting an error trying to mount /dev/hdc51 then perhaps your xbox harddrive isn't recognized as secondary master.. maybe you should try mounting /dev/hda51 as I believe this would be it's position if you happened to hook it on the wrong cable...

Hope this helps.

wow... i gotta stop screwing with this thing and leave well enough alone...

I have now (somehow) manage to make a real mess of things... as if my fried DVD-ROM wasn't bad enough.

I decided to install PBL1.3 with E&B Reloaded but after copying all the files over and rebooting it displayed the Phoenix Intro then froze. When I rebooted it froze again. So i hotswap back into xlinux and try reverting everything back to normal. Only problem is xlinux displays some important files (like the .xtf files, and default.xbe) but when i try to rename or remove them it tells me that the file or directory does not exist.  sad.gif

I was smart enough to backup all my files, but I cant delete the old ones on the HD in order to do anything with the backups. So my question is (and I've been researching this for hours, but can't really find an answer), can i just reformat the /dev/hdc51 with FATX and copy all my files over, or is this just not an option. I know xlinux can read FATX, but formating is a completely different story... i've found serval commands in /sbin that relate to "making a filesystem" but i don't want to mess things up any worse than they are.

If anyone has any input I'd really appreciate it... otherwise I'll just try something and hope for the best...

vonralian, it most likely has to do with how you have the drives setup. Please post which drives you are using as primary master, primary slave, secondary master... or try leave the / off the end of /cdrive/.

billygo, I'd love to install anything on it, but like I said... I can't delete the old fonts. That's my problem. I have a complete backup of all the files, so everything "should" work if I can wipe that drive and copy over that backup.

I'm doing some extensive reading on the mkfs command before I go and jump into anything, but any help is still appreciated. As far as I can tell the command I need to use is:
CODE
mkfs -y -p -f fatx /dev/hdc51

Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

Title: Guide To Installing Free-x/evox Using Xlinux
Post by: scuzzell on August 07, 2003, 10:47:00 AM
Yup, that'd do it. xlinux cannot recognze NTFS.

You're best bet is to compress the files using winzip into a .gz (gzip) file. This will probably make a separate ernie.xtf.gz, or default.xbe.gz or whatever for each file so just put them all on a floppy, everything should fit quite nicely as the 7mb .xtf file compresses down to about 10k smile.gif

Once you've done that you should be able to use the following commands in xlinux:
CODE
mkdir /zip
cd /floppy
gunzip *.gz /zip

That should extract everything but if not you'll have to do each file individually. You should be able to follow the rest of the steps from there using /zip instead of /cdrive

i tried that and it seems that xlinux cant read it, it says it wont find any files even when i try to just unzip 1 file at a time.

is ther a small linux operating system i could put on a partitioned part of the c: drive? and then put the bert.xtf etc on that?

oh, and the floppy is fromatte in fat file system. maybe thats a problem?

The floppy should have been mouted automatically during the boot sequence but it sounds like it wasn't. Try this before those other commands:
CODE
mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /floppy

You could also burn the files to a cd-r or cd-rw and load them from /cdrom instead. Once xlinux is booted everything is loaded in a RAMDISK so you don't need to keep the cd in. To mount the cdrom use the following command:
CODE
mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdb /cdrom

Ok, an update for anyone who cares. Those files that xlinux said don't exist... well apparently they really don't exist. I just copied new files into the directories and now 2 copies are listed but only one seems to really be there. Strange... maybe the FATX support in xlinux is a little buggy.

Anyway, I'm back to where I started though. Phoenix Logo then black screen. As far as I can tell either PBL is not loading my BIOS (a modified version of x2 4977 non BFM) or the bios is not loading evoxdash.xbe... I'll have to mess with it some more.

All this messing around with xlinux was a really good learning experience. While this is not the first time I've used linux, I'm no Guru. The cool thing is I found out that xlinux has built in telnet, ftp, and dhcp daemons. So I think I might just replace my Windows ICS computer with this instead.  smile.gif

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hda51, or too many mounted file systems

You can access an NTFS HD in xlinux without going through all those steps of unswapping the drive, rebooting, zipping files, re-swapping the drive, unzipping and copying the files.

All you have to do is:

1.  at the xlinux prompt type: cfdisk
the xlinux version of fdisk will pop up.  In there it will list the NTFS drive.

2.  highlight the partition that you want to change (it will have NTFS beside it)

3.  Using the arrow keys highlight [Type] and press enter.  (A huge list of files system
    formats will come up. )

4.  Get the reference number for the file system you want (if it asks you to press any key to continue...  do it.)  (I believe for Fat32 the number is 07)

5.  At the prompt it will default to 83 which is a linux files system.  All you have to do is type "07" (without quotes) instead of 83.  (It will then bring you back to the main screen when you first loaded cfdisk.

6.  Using the arrow keys highlight [Write] and press enter.  (It will write the information to the disk.  You may get a message saying the the information was writted but the re read failed.  That's okay.  Just reboot the system swapping the xbox drive again and you will have access to your previous NTFS HD.

7.  mount the drive and copy files needed.  Then, redo all the steps to convert it back to NTFS.

That will make it accessible for you.  The wierd part was I thought that I would loose all my information but I didn't.  And I did it 3 or 4 times too.

Also, at one point I did it to a linux type of file system and I DID NOT have to reboot after because it had no error message after the [Write] step.

I immediately exited the program and accessed the drive.

Hope this helps!

Two questions -

I finally got this to work tonight but at the end of the Tutorial it says to "MD /xbox/skins"

The directory in the Bert and Ernie file is "Skin". Does this cause a problem? Should I rename the directory to Skins in the bert and ernie section?

When I completed and unmounted everything I booted the xbox and got the Service Error. I have been trying for an hour for HHD to see the drive but it will not - any advice? Can I use a different hard drive?

Thanks.

One odd thing about this whole process though.. the bert is cheating on ernie exploit required that you needed a 4920 dash.. but i took the risk as well and had no problems.. if anything i think i had an advantage as that I was able to run the programs from xbins (xbmp.xcommander.a few emus) without even having to sign them with xbedump.

so good luck and tell me how yours runs.

so EnigmusSnake, can you tell me the exact linux codes command to type in to copy and move all this file to my x-box hard-drive?

I just got me the bert is cheating on ernie zip file and here are the folder and files in the zip:

Skin (folder)
bert.xtf
default.xbe
evox.ini
snuffleupagus.xtf

so, which file do i have to rename, and which file am i not gonna use...

I also have a dashboard 4034 too so the the original tutorials kinda confuse me biggrin.gifs...

so the "font" folder on the x-box hard-drive doesn't exist on dash 4034 right?

and by meaning the main root, which drive is that? is that drive c or e on the x-box harddrive?

one more question:

"g)
Type the following commands in EXACTLY as below:

CODE
mkdir /xbox/Skins
cp -rf * /xbox/
cd /xbox
mv bert.xtf fonts/
mv snuffleupagus.xtf fonts/

This copies the files to your xbox HD and puts them in the right place also."

the following codes above said "mkdir /xbox/Skins" while the folder that is included in the bert.rar is named "Skin" without the "s" at the end...

and what does cp -rf * /xbox/ stand for?

and since i have a dashboard version 4034, i don't have the fonts folder, so what do i suppose to do with the last two command:

mv bert.xtf fonts/
mv snuffleupagus.xtf fonts/

should i change it to this since i'm already in the xbox hard-drive directory?:

mv bert.xtf
mv snuffleupagus.xtf

and also, do i type the following codes are in at once, or do i have to press enter after each:

CODE
mkdir /xbox/Skins
cp -rf * /xbox/
cd /xbox
mv bert.xtf fonts/
mv snuffleupagus.xtf fonts/

please please explain this simple steps to me guys sad.gif only need this command to finish my media player...

or can someone write a much more clearer tutorials than this... man, he didn't include the commands to copy the default.xbe and evox.ini files over to the xbox hard-drive plus doesn't the "mkdir /xbox/Skins" means that it only make a directory name "Skins" instead of create a folder name Skins and also the files in the folder too?

this is so darn confusing, please please please explain it clearly yah sad.gif

Title: Guide To Installing Free-x/evox Using Xlinux
Post by: lanvo on November 06, 2003, 02:13:00 PM
okay, my xbox was shipped to me yesterday and luckily enough, I have a version 1.2, lol, i guess that is the main reason that i buy online was to get that version as for the local store only have those new bundle model sad.gifs...

the xbox came with a samsung dvd-rom drive which i've tested with every single cdrw brand that i currently use and it read it all, even those very cheaply made memorex cdrw hehe biggrin.gifs... but it doesn't read not even one single cdr's!!!!!!!!!

oh well... here is to make this tutorials a little clearer biggrin.gifs...

the biggest bug of this whole tutorials is this part of code:

"mkdir /xbox/Skins
cp -rf * /xbox/
cd /xbox
mv bert.xtf fonts/
mv snuffleupagus.xtf fonts/"

where the cp -rf * /xbox/ is...

when you type that it after making the skins directory, it will copy every single file on your computer c:/ drive to your xbox c: and d: drive sad.gif... but my doing this, you can skip the part where you have to type in the command to transfer the default.xbe and evox.ini over biggrin.gifs...

one more thing is the Skins folder is not needed unless you want to use the phoniex skins in evox dashboard which looks like shite hehe biggrin.gifs... the default.xbe has already had a preinstalled original evox skins in it so there is no need to type in the mkdir /xbox/skins/

and to say skins... the "s" ins't suppose to be there... so go in your evox.ini and edit the skinname to this:

[Misc]

AutoLaunchGames   = No
AutoLaunchDVD   = No
DVDPlayer   = "e:appsdvdxdefault.xbe"
AutoLaunchAudio   = No
AudioPlayer   = "c:newdash.xbe"
MSDashBoard   = "c:newdash.xbe"
UseFDrive   = Yes
SkinName   = Pheonix
IGR      = no
UseItems   = Yes
ScreenSaver   = 5
Fahrenheit   = No
ShadeLevel   = 90

to:

[Misc]

AutoLaunchGames   = No
AutoLaunchDVD   = No
DVDPlayer   = "e:appsdvdxdefault.xbe"
AutoLaunchAudio   = No
AudioPlayer   = "c:newdash.xbe"
MSDashBoard   = "c:newdash.xbe"
UseFDrive   = Yes
SkinName   = Original
IGR      = no
UseItems   = Yes
ScreenSaver   = 5
Fahrenheit   = No
ShadeLevel   = 90

oh, and the last and most important thing is you have to rename the bert and ernie font to Xbox.xtf and Xbox Book.xtf!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

so if you don't want your whole hard-drive to copy over to the xbox c and d drive, type this in for part G:

mkdir /xbox/Skins (don't type in this code)
cp -rf * /xbox/ (don't type in this code)
cd /xbox
mv Xbox.xtf fonts/ (dashboard version 4920)
mv "Xbox Book.xtf" fonts/ (dashboard version 4920)
mv Xbox.xtf /xbox/ (dashboard version 4034)
mv "Xbox Book.xtf" /xbox/ (dashboard version 4034)
mv default.xbe /xbox/
mv evox.ini /xbox/

umount both cdrive and xbox then type in reboot for xlinux to shutdown the xbox and pc for you as if you type in umount xbox, it will mostly likely say the hard-drive is busy...

and this font expliots bert is cheating on ernies was original designed for xbox dashboard version 4034... biggrin.gifs..... but it woks on 4920 as well biggrin.gifs...

anyways, for some reason, after i have completely done with this installation, doing the first few days of using it, everytime i turn my xbox on, it always have to reset itself for like 3 - 4 times until it get in the evox dashboard...

when i first boot on my xbox, the xbox animation logo run, then it sent me to the xbox original dashboard but it is not fully loaded, it only loaded the background and then pause for like 2 seconds and start to fade then boot to the evox dashboard... but for the first 2 days of using it, it boot to the original dashboard background then reset and repeating that for like 2 more times then it can boot into the evox dashboard, don't know why but after the third day, it stop reseting biggrin.gifs...

well, maybe it was becuase i connect in the ethernet cable plus i change the skin to the evox original one biggrin.gifs...

but still, i have to sign all my .xbe hehe biggrin.gifs...

so far, xbox media player is working fine!!! that's all i need...

and last comment is to say!!!

THANKS A LOT FOR THIS TUTORIALS!!! biggrin.gifs...

lol, wtf are you talking about? how can you overwrite your original font when you have already renamed those original font to xbox.old and xbox book.old in the first step of this tutorials? what i have done is just a modification to part G... you are the one who are clueless my babe biggrin.gifs...

the reason for renaming those file to a different extension is to not overwrite it...

and in fact, if you have all the expliots renaming and correctly in place, even if you overwrite those original font, it will still works... those originals font are just backups files for if you want to go back to the original font, you can rename it again...

and by doing my method, you will not overwrite it... unless you skip all the first step of this tutorials hehe biggrin.gifs...

okay, is there any expert linux people in here? read my above linux command again and see what part of it will ruin your xbox!!! i have done that command step by step and got my font expliot to run using xlinux!!!

if you were to type in the original command in this tutorials from part G, it will copy all the directory/folder and files where your skin folder is to both of your C and D drive!!! so that's why i modify those command again to only copy the bert/ernie, default.xbe, and evox.ini to your drive...

H E L P !

I Have a new 1.4 XBOX and an old 1.0 Version (This one Modded with Matrix Xodus).
Now I want to upgrade the hdd of the new 1.5, but I haven't a compatible modchip.
Is it possible to install Exploit to a non original 160Gb Hdd??
I can access hard disk with my old 1.0 Xbox modded, and i think is it possible to install EVOX into the new 1,5 Xbox without soldering or mounting any ModChip.

P.s. I haven't a  MemoryCard.

Thanks!

Hey the tut looks great, but I haven't been able to try it out  yet. I got hdd driver from x-bins, but its missing .dll files. I found the first one that came up missing, but can't find the sec. Any info on were to get the missing .dll's would be appreciated. It says I'm missing MSVCRTD.dll.  Has any one else had this problem with HDD Driver?

With that hack, I won't need Pheonix Bios Loader right?
And, do this hack include Evox in the files bert.xtf ?
Thx !

how do you delete files, specially ghost files
I can see it with "ls" but it won't let me move it copy it or remove it.

Also I tried to start the xbox for the first time after I did the hot swap and put the fonts on there
and now it only loads to the M$ dashboard but there are no works or xbox icon like: Music Memory Settings
all I see is a green grid which is a backround, I wait but it doesn't load evox. Does anyone know what is wrong?

Hey I recently tried this tutorial because it seemed easy enough but heres the problem

everytime i turn on the xbox the screen goes black and the led's start to flicker red, amber, green, over and over again

the only thing i can think of is when i hotswapped i still had a game in the drive but i didnt really think that would make any difference

and my biggest problem is the fact that the HDD Driver program would never work so i didnt back up my hardrive.

i can still play regular games if i put them in right away but i cant however access the hardrive at all now and when i go to save a game we crash so maybe im just really stupid or something ha probably but if anyone can help that would be awesome thanks

okay, best thing now is to put the font back to normal... did you rename the bert/ernie font to xbox.xtf and xbox book.xtf?

right now, all you got to do is change the bert and ernie extension to something like .fff and change the xbox.old and xbox book.old extension back to ".xtf" using the xlinux command...

now boot up your xbox and see if it boot to the normal ms dashboard

after that, do the hotswap again and boot into windows, then open the HDD-driver program, when it said it have found your xbox hard-drive, press okay, next go to tools and backup HD, pick a location to save it... it would take around 1 hours to 3 hours biggrin.gif anyways, ignore the invalid size error box, just don't click on it biggrin.gifs...

now, can you give me your whole xbox system spec...

like what version is it? is it a bundle? and what dashboard version is it?

Title: Guide To Installing Free-x/evox Using Xlinux

yes that would be the problem
oh and now when i go into it through xlinux it says everything is read only when i like want to delete or rename files

because right now i have my friends xbox and i just saved all his files from his xbox onto my cdrive
and i want to just delete my files then copy the files from the cdrive and put them on my xbox

that should work shouldnt it

but because of the read only crap it wont let me delete anything now

Disaster

everything is F'ed up

now i cannot even do the hot swaping anymore i mean ive done it 800 times before and now everytime i go to mount it says special device /dev/hdc51 not there
then i try again and teh same thing

not sure why it is saying that now i checked to see if i was still doing everything right and i was so im really clueless now.

man, that is very bad since you don't have a backup of your hard-drive, becuase you can't restore it!!!

don't worry, if you can still boot up original games, then there is always the 007 savegame method waiting for you so you can use it to gain ftp access to your xbox hard-drive, then you can edit whatever you want in gnu windows style biggrin.gifs...

turns out my bert & ernie files were bad

anyways
new problem

when i ftp to my xbox there is no apps or games folder in the F directory and when i try to upload anything it wont let me

any suggestions?
Title: Guide To Installing Free-x/evox Using Xlinux

smile.gif

and beside, if you have an 8gb hard-drive, which i guess you do since your is an old version xbox. then you can't use the F drive biggrin.gif

the reason why the F: drive appear in there when you use ftp becuase evox created a folder with that name, it's not really usable just yet smile.gif so when you try to upload anything to it, it won't works...

appz folder are ussally in the E: drive, and you ussally have to make a new folder name appz, it is not created yet when i install this expliots... but you can create that folder anywhere you want just make sure you evox.ini file is point to that location on your xbox hard-drive biggrin.gif

and lol, your bert and ernie is a bad file, man that was sure a waste of time smile.gif

sometimes when i turn on my xbox i just go to a black screen and nothing happens it can take like 3 reboots before i get the evox screen
it scared me the first time ha

is this normal?
can it be fixed?

other problems i coppied all the files from media player onto the E drive but it doesnt work i get the stupid your xbox needs service screen......... man i hate that screen
maybe its because i put it in its own folder on apps ie. /E/Apps/XBMP/
thats probably it im goin to go try

i also tried to put a game i downloaded in the game folder also didnt work thinking maybe the game is corrupt probably as my luck would turn out oh well
trial and error is how i got evox to work in the first place i guess ill start there

Guess what everyone i am back
turns out nothing is as it seems

i had been trying to get evox to do something anything for a few days now and im pissed
all i could do was ftp too it

on the EvoX menu
m$dashboard - took me to the Xbox needs service screen
load dvd game - Xbox needs service screen
shutdown - works
reboot - works

ok everything else worked

except when i tried putting games and stuff on it they also took me to the Xbox needs service screen

i figured i would just download the slayers evox installer 2.5 right
so i did burned it to the cd-rw
wouldnt load it ever either freeze before it got to evox or would go to evox
i know the cd rw works because in evox it recognized the cd i had put in there

total time working on modding the xbox : 26 hours
results: none
frustration level: shooting rampage

well not sure if any of u have had any of these problems but if ya have any ideas that would be apreciated
thanks in advance

biggrin.gifs...

the font expliot can't run unsign .xbe file...

if you want to run unsign xbe, you will also need to install the PBL but since you have just run thur a bunch of problem, try out the patching first and then we you get around better with this, then try to install the PBL smile.gif

and about your xbox go to the black screen, do you have a network cable connected to your xbox? I ussally only have this problem when i'm using the bigfont bert and ernie .xtf file, it never happen with the reloaded before...

what font are you using, is it the original or reloaded bert/ernie, or just tell me the size of your ernie.xtf size smile.gif

what is my C drive supposed to look like?

because the M$ dashboard wont work ever so i think until i get that working im not getting anywhere

so far my C drive consists of:
    Xbox Book.xtf << original file
    Xbox.xtf << original
    evox.ini
    default.xbe << new
    xboxdashboard.xbe << original
Fonts folder:
Xbox Book.xtf << Bert i believe
Xbox.xtf << Ernie

i think there is like an audio folder and another one i wasnt too worried about thsoe though
anyways im sure theres a problem in there somewhere.

if anyone wants to add me on msn feel free < [email protected] >

ok i totally dont know what to do now i tried the exploit and ran through the tut exactly as it stated everthting seemed to work fine till i went to boot the xbox afterwards i saw the dash for a split second then it went to the screen that says your xbox requires service. the downside is i never got hdd driver to work so i dont have a backup of my orig drive contents. however i can still unlock the drive and access it in xlinux no problem so i can still copy files around and what not but i have no idea what to try. my goal out of all this is to get the evox dashboard to load so i can boot linux later on if i feel like installing that but for now i just want a different dash and to be able to play games from the drive instead of cd. any reply to this doesnt need to be in laymens terms im a computer science student in my senior year so i can understand most any terminology used for this specific system. all im looking for i guess is some guidance as to why the new dash wont load. by the way i did upgrade my xbox to live with the mech assault disc. I will try anything to get this to work without buying anything for it.

that happened to me too

got friends xbox hot swapped copied all the files and folders on his xbox to the cdrive
put in my xbox rm -rf * (deleted it all)
then coppied all his folders back into mine xbox booted normally again
then i did the mechassult hack and its so incredibly easy i recomend it then i ended up using the audio exploit so there ya go man good luck

..lemme tell ya

..after trying all the hdd driver related exploits and damn near coming to the end of my tether, cos none of em worked (Win2k sp4 .net 1.1) and all that hotswapping was getting on top... I gave this one a go.... not quite as described... I pushed the bert n ernie with evox 3921 at the point of copying the files in, only renaming to .bak instead of .old (although that would make no difference)...

..another bit of info is that I booted a game, went to options, turned all the sound options down to zero, and left it 15 minutes... that ensured that the drive was open (midtown madness but I dont suppose it matters)..

..the xlinux boot works like a dream.. mounting and unmounting the drives was easy, the instructions are impeccable.. and upon reboot everything was perfect - set up ftp in seconds, modified the ini file to point back to the orig (only because there was nothing where it was pointing at that point) - have since installed a few things and everything has worked just fine.... if any of these exploit methods are to be trusted I'd recommend this one to any of ya's.... oh... my xbox is brand new, and would be a 1.3, 5150

..hotswapping is a dodgy thing for sure, but a bit of common sense and a steady hand and everything should be fine for ya... thanx v.much for this tut.... most excellent indeed dude  beerchug.gif  (thanx to me good mate h who pointed me in your direction too ohmy.gif )
