Yes, I have the same problem! For some reason, the HDD never stops spinning, and ALL the time I hear the HDD platter *tick-tick* every 2 seconds. It's like the HDD is always busy...
...Is it possible that the HDD needs to load the background audio in the dashboard all the time?
Anyway, i have a 1.5 Xbox,
Kernel 5530 and
Dash 5659Due to the fact that the drive never stops spinning (IDEAS, ANYONE??), I HAD to try the hot-swap trick, heh, so I did the following:
- I connected the PC power cable to my Xbox HDD, while it was still connected to the Xbox' IDE
- Turned on the PC and pressed Pause BEFORE the IDE Auto detection. (I have an nForce2 mobo from MSI)
- I turned on my Xbox and waited for the dash to show up.
- Because the drive doesn't stop spinning, I disconnected the Xbox IDE cable right away, and plugged in the PC IDE cable (stand-alone sec. master)
- Pressed space-bar and let the BIOS continue the HDD Auto detect.
- It detected a WD80EB (Western Digital), which is correct.
- After that, it took about 3 minutes before the BIOS continued.
- After the BIOS, the system again stops at "Verifying DMI pool... Success"
- Windows XP doesn't boot, because for some reason, my PC is unable to find my primary IDE HD.
- After about 2 minutes, my mobo starts nVidia LAN BOOT Manager, heh, so it is unable to boot from my primary IDE HD.
Why?? The BIOS detects my Primary IDE HD with no probs, but after the BIOS, the system is unable to detect my primary 'Windows XP' HD.
Should an "inside-Windows XP" hot swap be a solution?
I tried the above swap-trick for about 6 times now, even with a 80 conductor IDE cable, because my mobo gave me a warning about that.
After all, WHY doesn't my Xbox HDD spin down?! Is it because the new kernel and/or dash?
Tnx.
MP
And they say lifes easy!!!!!
what if im in clock loop and i want to do a hotswap when should i unplug the hd ?
Unplug the Dvd IDE, Or the xbox will always reboot and you wont be able to hotswap. So unpluging the dvd boots up to an error and the xbox doesnt reboot.
by the way my xbox is a V1.1 4817/4920.
sigh...no it won't work...eeprom...hdkeys...locked.... sorry I feel tired...too many same questions
i have the same problem. does anybody know how to get past this?
Instead of hooking up IDE cable to the computer IDE cable...can the IDE cable be modded to a USB connector at one end and attached in 1.0 or 2.0 USB slot on a compter? I'm guessing Windows can detect the XBOX HDD as an external hard drive
hi i was wondering if i manage to fully set this up on my old xbox hdd 8gb
(i modded mine with mod chip got a 120gb now) then could i put the modded 8gb in my comp back it up then put my friends original unmodded xbox hard drive in my comp and restore it with my modded bakup
sorry if you cant understand what im saying or has been answere b4
This is for everyone who cant get HD driver to work , its a package of HD driver with all of the needed DLL's
http://members.shaw.ca/tonymoon52/HDD%20Dr...20dll's.zip
i just did a hotswap and i didint see any c,e,f drive's is this normal? they was other folders in there like game cache
Im also working on Translating HD_fatXbox_Explorer_1.4 from french 2 english.
Its 99% staple and you can make folders, its perfect for copying gamesaves 2 the HDD(No DLL's Needed)
where do i get the exploit package? what is it called
Evox will run a basic setup without an evox.ini.. When it runs, an empty copy is created..
when i run hdd driver it keeps coming up with an error invalid filename size but when i click them all down hdd driver just closes down HELP!!!
I was wondering if my xbox v1.6 would be able to do this hdd swap or is it only for v1.0 's ?
Version-XBOX V1.1
DASH 4920 (you can get this dash by updating with a xbox live enabled game)
Kernel 4817
I'm pretty sure this exploit should work with ALL xbox's but just to be sure update your dashboard via Xbox Live at least. Try without doing so at your own risk.
No information currently available on what versions the audio exploit runs on, should work on all that meet above conditions.
hi,
i have tried hdd swap and when I pulled of the X-BOx HDD IDE cable and connected to turned off PC I booted the PC and bios found the HDD but XBoxHDD-Driver couldnt find it when I reconnected X-BOX HDD to the green box it gave me the mean green screen, how do I access the hDD???
seems to be the same thing inbcow gets
When you hook up a hotswapped hard drive, to a non-booted pc, then boot the pc, the hard drive recieves the reset command and re-locks
hi, I just wanted to tell all the people who "DISSED" mod chip ordering sites.
I have ordered a SmartXX chip for 49.95 and it got delivered THE NEXT DAY. I have never experienced such service even on Amazon etc.
Sorry for the bad english guys.
People i got a better idea for softmodding your xbox. i tried this with xbox v1.1 and v1.3.
The First thing to do is to install the xbox live menu (included in live game). i'm not sure this is nessecary, but you should do it for surcumstances.
The second thing to do is to create a xbox hd maker CD with the softpack, go to http://www.www.CNN.com and register to download these tools. follow the included instructions on creating the disk. when done the disk should be bootable. if not go to check bios settings for first boot. now leave the disk in the bootable drive.
turn off computer and begin the hotswapping. if the bios detected the disk you can choose three things, just choose the first one the cd will start up lunix.
Once bootet to xboxhdm with your xbox HDD on primary master
type : softmod
Follow instructions. When you are done, reassemble you xbox. Enjoy !
WHAT WILL IT DO ?
-----------------
This package will install :
1) The NO-CD new stable audio hack.
2) The Mech-fonts (original feenix version)
The "Xbox Live" tab will be renamed to PBL
and will load the Phoenix Bios Loader when pressed.
3) Phoenix Bios Loader v 1.4.1 with support for Focus chip.
4) Evox v. 3935.
if you don't know where to download xboxhdm and softmod, just send me a email and i will send the link ASAP. w . w . w . x - b - o - x . n e t (is the website without the spaces
i forgot to tell people that the first thing to do after the succes is to backup the eeprom hdkey etc. This can be done in EVOX in settings. after that ftp your xbox and download the files from the backup folder to your pc (should be in C:\backup in xboxhd)
Newbies remember that the eeprom using LIVEINFO shows the hdkey of your HD and other HD's for your own xbox. with this you can easily install bigger hard disks. using the XBOXHDMAKER you can make a brand new xbox hd using the softpack if wanted.
((( . So i have to patch my dash to 4920 to make this work, right ? I've allready softmodded one Xbox(v1.3 can't remember what dash it was). It's pretty easy to make this exploit to work thx for the publisher
. I just hope I can patch my dash right.
hey guys i really need your help... i don't have 007 or mech assault so i tried to do the hot swap trick.. and my pc recognized it .. Warning: This guide mentions how to install older, outdated exploits, with tools that are practically from the stone age of modding. If you want to mod your Xbox with this, do so at your own risk. Nowadays, there are much newer, safer, and alot less painfully glitched tools out there. Please read around the XBE exploits forum (most likely the pinned topics) before just assuming this guide is good
The `Noob` Tutorial on Using The Font/Audio Exploits With The Hard Drive Swap Trick
(Or "The Complete Idiots Guide to Setting Up an Exploit`"...)
`Co-written` By Tsurani & STKD. Current version as of 26/07/03 = "Super Final UnRetail II Turbo Edition 1.0"
(Pretty much finished now, barring tiny edits.)
First thing first - NO MOD CHIP REQUIRED AT ALL as long as your Xbox is up-to-date.
Secondly - First warning. DO NOT TRY THIS UNLESS YOU UNDERSTAND THERE IS A VERY HIGH RISK OF DAMAGE OCCURING TO YOUR XBOX HDD DURING THE DRIVE SWAP PROCEDURE. CAREFULLY CONSIDER IF THE END RESULTS ARE WORTH THE RISK BEFORE YOU TRY THIS.
Things used/needed:
A PC running either Windows 2000 with .NET installed, or Windows XP with SP1 or .NET installed. This is a recommendation, HDD Driver may still fail to work.
The font exploit - contains the fonts and a default.xbe etc..
OR the audio exploit. (See *** sections later on)
A new dashboard (YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO USE A NON UPDATED ONE... I'M NOT SURE)
the program called HDD_DRIVER.zip (its on the console section of www.megagames.com)
Please note there is NO alternative to HDD Driver as of.
Note: It is very important to be running either Win2K *with .NET installed* or XP with SP1 or .NET so that HDD Driver works... possibly Windows Server2K3 may work also but I'm far too lazy to find out. May test eventually
IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR BEGINNERS - The audio exploit is FAR safer and easier to try, as you will still be able to use your Xbox for games, access the normal dashboard etc. See the readme.txt for more information on it. Font exploit is only recommended if you are
100% sure you know what to do afterwards to get things running.
Whatever you try;
Things DO go wrong with these exploits and especially the swap trick sometimes, and not all problems are easily solved. Tsurani wrote the font exploit part of this guide. I have never even used it, and I'm not going to try it because I don't want to risk my own Xbox with that one.
I cannot help you if you mess something up by trying these exploits simply as I've never experienced any of the more serious problems. This tutorial is written with plenty of warnings that BAD THINGS CAN HAPPEN and SERIOUS DAMAGE CAN OCCUR because there IS NO 100% SAFE method. You are taking a SERIOUS RISK by trying them. Yes, you can pretty much kill your Xbox - quite easily too. Think about that. I'm not writing these warnings in (or any of this tutorial) for my own benefit. I wrote this (with Tsurani's info) to inform people of the best known methods - but the potential for BAD THINGS HAPPENING still exists. Whether you try it is at your own discretion but myself, Tsurani or xbox-scene.com take no responsibility and likely CANNOT HELP if things go really wrong for you. Bear it in mind and think very carefully before taking the risk.
Safety notice: PLEASE take proper electrical precautions when working with the Xbox/PC internals, and at NO TIME touch the Xbox power supply when the Xbox is opened up.
This information is currently under revision. It is no-one's responsibility but your own if you mess this up and screw up your Xbox - you have been warned more than enough times now. If anyone wants to confirm it/suggest changes, please do so.
NOTE: The first technique we will use is referred to as "hot-swapping" the Xbox hard drive. This is to gain access to it via your PC and is risky to the Xbox HDD. The potential exists for accidental and serious damage to your Xbox HDD. If you ignored all the other warnings so far, PLEASE only continue on the understanding that this could happen and it is entirely at your own risk. Thank you.
1. Open up the Xbox, turn it on and let it boot the dashboard and nothing else, and give it around 5-10 minutes so the hard drive spins down. (This is so the Xbox HDD is "unlocked" into a state the PC can read...).
Leave the Xbox switched on at all times now for the duration of this tutorial unless told to do otherwise later on, so that power is still going to the Xbox HDD.
***OPTIONAL STEP - you may wish to unscrew the Xbox HDD for easy access if you doubt your cable will reach, do this BEFORE you turn on the Xbox of course.***
2. Unplug the Xbox HDD IDE cable from the back of the drive, and plug the Xbox HDD into the 2nd IDE cable on your PC instead - no other devices should be attached to this cable.
3. Turn on the PC and you *should* see it detect the Xbox HDD while booting. You may need to play with your PC BIOS HDD detection setting.
ALTERNATIVE METHOD IN CASE PC WILL NOT DETECT XBOX HDD WITH ABOVE METHOD
1. Turn on the PC, quickly hit the Pause-Break key before it detects the hard drives. Leave it paused.
2. Open up and turn on the Xbox, probably best just to let it boot the dashboard and nothing else, and give it around 5-10 minutes so the hard drive spins down. (So the Xbox HDD is unlocked...)
3. Unplug the Xbox HDD IDE cable and plug it into your 2nd IDE cable on your PC - no other devices should be attached to it.
Hit enter so the PC resumes the booting process and *should* detect the Xbox HDD. You may need to play with your PC BIOS HDD detection setting.
END OF ALTERNATE METHOD.
4. Assuming all is ok, wait a few minutes after running Windows to make sure the Xbox hard drive is added. If it hasn't worked, try the trick again. In most cases it *will* work as long as your BIOS picked up the Xbox HDD.
HDD SWAP COMPLETED! Well done!
5. Run the "HDD Driver" tool (this will let you access the Xbox hard drive from Windows). Click the OK button. Usually a few errors will pop up ("invalid file size"), ignore these and keep hitting "OK" until it gives you access to the drive (I only get about 5-10 errors).
If you have problems starting the program eg... "cant find Msvcirtd.dll" goto www.google.com and look for that file name. Download it and put it into the directory where the "driver.exe" is located (YES the HDD driver). It is also a good idea to update your MS Visual runtime files with the latest version located at www.M$.com
Note: This should not happen if you have WinXP with SP1/.NET or Win2K with .NET components installed afaik.
6. BACK THE ENTIRE XBOX HARD DRIVE UP NOW! Go into the "tools" menu of HDD Driver and click Backup HDD.
Do NOT skip this step unless you want to risk ruining your Xbox permanently.
<<<<THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!>>>>>
If you dont do this you may be very sorry later on if something goes wrong.
Make sure you have at least 11-12GB's on your normal Windows hard drive for this.
Ok, proceed with the backup (this takes about 30-45 mins, may depend on your PC)
7. 30 minutes later... Ok so now you have a backup. GOOD (wasnt that worth waiting for?)
the next thing to do is to extract the font exploit you downloaded previously. (can be found all over the place)
8. Run HDD Driver again (it usually closes itself) and expand the "system" partition on the left. There should be a whole heap of files in here (don't worry if it all looks corrupted, it's NOT). You should see a "fonts" folder here (providing you have a newer XBOX version or you updated the dashboard using a XBOX live enabled game). For those using the audio exploit, now refer to the *** sections.
9. Expand the "fonts" directory. There should be 2 files in there named "Xbox.xtf" and "Xbox Book.xtf". Now right click these files in the LEFT window (one at a time, duh!) and choose "properties". Now, change the extension on each file from ".xtf" to ".old". Do NOT leave the .XTF extension on these files!
***10a. If you chose the audio exploit, instead go into E:TDATAfffe0000music and rename the file ST.DB to ST.old if it exists.
(These files may also be found in the main directory - just do the same with those to be sure.)
10. Now using the LEFT pane of the window go back to the "fonts" directory and right click it. Select the option "insert file". Select the "Bert.xtf" file on your PC and insert it into the directory. Do the same with the "ernie.xtf".
***10a. Copy the exploit file ST.DB from your PC into that music directory.
11. Now browse back to the main folder (the parent directory for "fonts") and insert theother file that we downloaded in our exploit pack "default.xbe".
***11a. Copy the linux.xbe from your PC into the main Xbox directory (E:)
12. Shut down the PC after everything is copied.
13. Replace the original Xbox IDE cable back into the Xbox HDD. Turn off the Xbox afterwards.
14. If you chose the free-x font exploit, boot up the Xbox without any cd's. It should come up with the Evolution-X dashboard here. You can now do lots of cool stuff.
15a***. If you chose the audio exploit; (From the original readme.txt)
When you want to run Linux, just boot the Xbox with an Audio CD inserted, and once the CD plays slowly press the following 8 keys :
B, Down, A, Right, Right, A, A, A
(or go into the "audio cd" menu, choose "copy", then "copy" again and then "new soundtrack", then "ok")
* Linux should be running! :-)
EMERGENCY-ONLY SECTION: "So You Messed Up, Didn't You?"
(By Tsurani)
If you've buggered it up and you can't get back to your normal dashboard dont worry. I screwed mine up last night and was unable to "unlock" the HD for hot swap because I couldnt get into the dashboard. All you have to do is boot up your console with a game disk when doing the HOT SWAP and just wait for it to load into the game. Now your HD is unlocked again.. PHEW!
There is also another problem when it screws up once you go back to the HDD driver, you will be bombarded with error messages but dont worry; Just ignore the errors and click the "tools" menu and select the Hard Disk Restore Option. This will make it so that your Xbox is back to normal (aren't you glad you backed it up now? See, told you it was a good idea) and so that you can try the process again as it wont give you infinite error messages next time you load the HDD driver.
This tutorial is the culmination of the simplfied HDD swap guide authored by "STKD" using available information from other sources with respect for their work, and information provided by "Tsurani" on using the font exploit and EvoX. All material in this guide was originally posted on the forums of xbox-scene.com. No responsibility for any problems arising from the information in this guide will be taken by xbox-scene.com or the afforementioned writers. Use it at your own risk and understand there *is* a small chance you may mess something up. This tutorial is given copyright free to use as you wish, as long as the information is not charged for and xbox-scene.com and the relevant writers are namechecked to indicate its origins. Thank you.
Feedback wanted. This is the `cleaned up` amalgamated version of the earlier HDD swap guide and Tsurani's EvoX/Font Exploit guide (kudos due), with some basic information on using the audio exploit instead added by myself.
thanks for cleaning this up, it's certainly easier on the eyes, but it's little different than what Tsurani wrote here. So most of the credits should go to him, even though I like this *version* more...

Well when i tried the other guys the HDD Driver said it found my xbox but then I got multiple errors and it doesnt work. I used my IDE cable that went into my cd rom and hooked my hard drive into it. First I booted up the computer with the power cord in the hard drive then the xbox ide cable in my HD and then wehn I pause break my computer and had my xbox and let the dash load then i put my Ide from computer into the HD then continued booting from the computer and it recongnized it then i opened up the HDD Loader and then it said it recongnized it and I hit ok then it got more then 10 like endless amount of errors what did i do wrong or is this program just a POS?
Also do you need to wait 10 minutes?
BUMP
Do you really need to have the computer on? Couldn't you unlock the HDD, then connect it to the PC and then turn on the PC?
ok to fix that file size error go here

Quite right... I forgot that I skipped the unnecessary step of plugging the XBox HDD into the PC power cable. Must change that.
Incidentally, Tsurani does get plenty of credit for this as far as I'm concerned, hence his name being first rather than mine. The HDD swap part of the guide (the most awkward part going on lack of other info) is 99% the one I wrote a few days ago, that afaik was put up before his guide appeared. I also rewrote and edited quite a large chunk of the EvoX part of the guide for clarity and added the alternate audio exploit method depending on which approach people wish to use. As far as I'm concerned shared credit is shared credit. This was never about credit. This was about writing something that would help people outl.
yea thats true why do you need to power up your pc and hot swap cant you just let the hd unlock then plug the ide in your pc and power up. hot swaping ide isnt a good ide in the first place its a nice way to fry your ide channels. as long as the hd has power and your bios sees it thers no reasion it wouldent work. but without the abiltly to make dirsin the hd driver its kinda useless right now untill it gets upgraded.

True... Maybe after a while though, the Xbox will realise there's no hard drive attached and reboot itself, fucking up whatever you were trying to do on the PC. *shrugs* Dunno really.
Is Xbox version 1.1 a requirement for this hot swap exploit or can I use my version 1.0 Xbox with 4034 kernel?
Just to note to anyone following this now; this change has now been made to the tutorial, and yes it is a slightly safer way to do things for the sake of your PC.
Well spotted, guess I never thought of that little change due to not using the PC to power the Xbox HDD.
How are people getting on with this generally anyway?

Answers to Xboxman20;
The HDD Driver program in general is very buggy and temperamental currently so you may well get more than 10 errors, there's no specific number but it *should* eventually work if you persist with it. Yes, you *definitely* need to wait the 5-10 minutes, probably best stick with 10 minutes *at least* for safety purposes to make sure the Xbox HDD is spun down completely. Any sooner and you risk damaging the HDD, so for the sake of 10 minutes of waiting it isn't worth the risk to skip that step.

I've been trying to get information on what version Xbox's/Kernels/Dashboards the two different exploits work under. Try the swap trick and see if you can see the correct directories for either exploit - that's all I can really think of for now. I've only had the info Tsurani provided on that side of things, and no one seems to be telling what versions can use the audio exploit... this is the part I'd really like to improve on is known compatibility, but getting people to post something like "confirmed working on Xbox version 1.X with (dashboard version) and (kernel version)" seems to be tricky. Feel free to help out on that one people.
cool thanx for updating the guide man. i dont mind if ppl use my guide an edit it aslong as every can get this exploit to work
well im glad to hear that ppl have had success with my guide (and the updated version that this guy wrote for us) its pretty cool to see evryone getting there xbox's modded without having to buy stuff.
ok cya all round
I'm extremely new to this, but I gave it a shot last night. I guess I fell somewhere between success and failure, when I rebooted the xbox it came up with a black screen and some small white text giving the website to the xbox linux page, and that was it. Oh, and the light flashed red. I'm going to restore the system partition tonight and give it another shot.. Anyone have any idea what could have gone wrong?
do i need to wait for the hd to stop spining?
i'm waiting for more than 20 minutes but it don't stop spining
If i just f***ed up the xboxdash file and get the multiple languages error, coul i use this trick to put the damm**d file on the hd or the xbox just dont unlock it since it doesnt show the dashboard
Okay - I'm by no means anywhere close to an expert so bear in mind I'm 100% guessing here. Most of these problems may be solved through some intense hunting around the boards if I can't help. And again let me stress I would highly recommend trying just the audio exploit to start with, as it is much less fatal if you do something wrong.
flashram: not sure but it sounds like you might not have an actual full Xbox Linux distro copied onto your Xbox (or possibly if you do, it could be in the wrong location)..? Possibly try one of the Xbox-CDRW-bootable Linux distro's from the Xbox Linux Project and see if that runs at least.
link385: Honestly not sure on that one. If it's only running as far as the dashboard it should power down after 5-10 minutes afaik. Can't think why it would be spinning if there's nothing going on, sorry.
Fire_-=: I'm honestly not sure if you can access the Xbox HDD if you messed up the dashboard file since I got through it okay myself. You could try the unfortunately-named "Newbie chat" board as people seem to be quite helpful at this kind of problem in there.
OK i was able to do this and load evox on boot but when I try and goto the msdashboard it gives me a green text error that my xbox is damaged. Do I need to install a newer dash ?
i also got a error 21 xbox needs service, you said this could be fixed by booting into a game? i put a game in and nothing happens. Does it have to be a live game or what? i need to know how to unlock the drive agian so i can restore it!!
My status:
The Swap trick works great, thanks for the down-to-earth/n00bie-friendsly version
Now here's my problem: I have the all the requirements with regards to bios and dashboard, and have inserted the bert.xtf & snuff..gus.txt files into the font directory.
The readme file that came with the dist said that you had to rename them XBox Book.xtf & Xbox.xtf respectively. I have tried both ways, and end up having the XBox boot, get the giant x, then the next screen flickers and it reboots. Any ideas on what I may be doing wrong?
(yet another "what am I doing wrong" reply)
I got the Bert_is_Cheating_on_Ernie_-_The_Pheonix_Project.rar off of DC++.
I followed the instructions and it booted to some linux distro.
My guess it the defult.xbe that came with the rar is linux.
So I downloaded the latest evox, renamed it default.xbe, configed the evox.ini, and copied over the old defult.xbe
Now it boots to the "error 21" screen.
My question is this: Should any evox xbe work or is there a special one needed when using the font exploit?
Someone was asking about this:
I was able to boot up a game disc (Hunter the Reckoning) and then perfrom the IDE cable swap.
I didn't wait for any set amount of time, I just put my ear to the HD and listened to see if it wasn't seeking.
I had to do the "pause at boot" trick on my PC, it wouldn't work if I had the IDE cable connected before powering on the PC. And I configured my bios to not auto detect the drive, I set it to "none". HDDriver was then able to see the drive (though windows explorer did not).
xp sees the drive but hd-driver dont talk abought being pissed off right now pice of shit program.
Windows XP+SP1
Xbox Kernel 4034
MS Dashboard 4092
do I really need .NET?
Thanx for this tutorial anyway..I hope I dont screw up

If you're going to insult other people's work, I assume you can do better. Feel free to write one yourself. Oh, wait...
xilico - as long as you have SP1 installed it should work just fine. Theoretically anyway.
I'm going to add the "pause when booting" section back in later as an alternate method if it doesn't work when powering on *after* the IDE cable has been swapped. Damn PC's and their zillion BIOS versions and hardware configurations... unfortunately let me just state I am probably *not* the person to ask when it comes to the font exploit as a ) there are a dozen or so variants of it out there right now (many of which are too risky as far as I'm concerned b ) The vague differences between Xbox versions, combined with different kernel and dashboard combo's mean these exploits are extremely temperamental and c ) personally I've only used the audio exploit.
I know audio mode is the safe one to use but..would I have any advantages by using the font mode?
Also will Kernel 4034 work? I have Dashboard 4092 though..
Can I upgrade to a larger drive at the same time? In other words, once I removed the orginal HDD from the XBOX and installed it on the PC, backed it up to the PC, then can I just put the orginal HDD away in storage? What do I do with the new larger HDD at that stage???
Many thanks!
But, because everything's not perfect, you must have a few other things....
***I assume you've already read the first tutorial of this thread so I won't go into details!!!***
1) First of all : find someone with an already modded Xbox . The other little thing is that he MUST have the same "original" HDD than yours .
If he used it for other things than "official Xbox", you need to prepare it as an original (I found a bootCD that can do it in a few seconds!! ) . Don't forget to activate the Xbox Live dashboard if it's not done yet (with a modded xbox, you don't need an original
) . And don't lock/unlock the HDD, it will be easier after.
2) Once you've prepared his xbox HDD as an original and up-to-date one you've got to boot on an evox CD and get linked with your computer . From your computer, access to the HDD to make the changes (copy the default.xbe, rename the .xtf from the font directory and copy bert and ernie) .
3) Test the modifications on the modded xbox : it should boot on evox (or linux, depend of the default.xbe you copied) from the HDD (verify you've removed the Evox CD !!!) . If it doesn't : retry from the beggining
4) get your unmodded box near your computer and turn it on so the HDD get unlocked .
!!!!! I noticed one thing : I tried for a moment to hot swap the HDD, it was recognize by the BIOS but I couldn't acces to it from ghost . I had 1 idea : maybe the Xbox was on the "set time" screen when I unplugged the HDD and it doesn't liked it, so I tried to just push A button a few minutes before swapping the drive and : It worked !!!!! So, if you don't have a screen near your comp to check, just push the button in case of.....
5)Put the HDD "modded and unlocked" and your "new" HDD in the computer (hot swap trick)
6)boot from a ghost 2003 CD
7) run ghost "ghost /IR" (to make it copy the disk bit by bit)
8) in less than 5 minutes you've got your new driver still locked and ready to run with the exploit installed !!!!
This seems really long to do but it's not .
I have a few xbox HDD spare so I made ghost images of "exploit installed" HDD for every model I founded . now, I just have to open the new xbox, hot swap the HDD and boot from ghost CD to copy the image to the disk .
I tried this method with 4 different new xboxs : it always worked...
Think about making a ghost image of a "new" HDD first in case of problem.....
I hope it was clear enough and sorry for the bad english....

Not really. It's pretty much a one-use method and I wouldn't recommend it, unless all you want to do is run Linux on it and not much else ever. (The original font exploit anyway)
With the audio one you can still run games etc, access the original dashboard, and the only thing you may lose is the not-all-that-useful audio copying facility.
Still getting no info on kernel/dash compatibility at all so can't really help there.
anyone tested this on a 1.0 yet?
i dont get it, if you screrw up your harddrive and get a error 21 how are you going to get it unlocked agian to restore..ive already tried using a game..it doesnt boot the game.
Can snuffleupagus.xtf be used instead of ernie.xtf? If not, where do I find the "original" font hack, as I can only find the Bert is Cheating on Ernie file on xbins.
I hope I dont screw mine
Anyway I will try the audio hack today but I need only one more Q answered please
Can I run Evox with this exploit? and if it`s possible
Can I get all the benefits like ftping/Bigger HD etc like a MODchip?
Thanx
You can probably find the answer to that elsewhere. I personally can't say I've tried but I can't think why you wouldn't be able to install EvoX while you have accessed the hard drive just the same as with the font exploit section - of course replacing the dashboard might not let you access the copy facility to run the exploit which is why I haven't tried it. I'm a little unclear of the intricacies of the Xbox dash/bios/evox workings still but I'd guess full HDD replacement would at least require you to flash the Xbox bios still.
Also Is there an alternative for HDD Driver? It gives me errors with the following DLL MFC42D.DLL and MSVCRTD.DLL
I already download those and put them next to the program and now it gives me another error with libraries..
I had to install .NET Framework and still no go
Im running XP+SP1 this proggy is supposed to run under this OS
Well if anyone knows how to get it work please help me out
just a question: if I mess up my HD, can I use Xbox.Auto-HDPrep.Tools.V2-DungeonX to reformat the HD? I'm new, so don't flame, pls!! I just bought it this afternoon (and I got 2 power cords but no RCA cable... >_>)
BoomDivx did you make a backup with HDD Driver?
If you did then use HDD to restore it...
Anyway anyone has got some link so I can see how to connect my Xbox HD to my PC?
Im stuck there but I already know how to do the others..
In the guide it says unplug your Xbox Ide Cable (the grey one)..do I unplug it from the Xbox Motherboard?
The IDE cable is connected to the DVD Drive then to the board...what can I do?
Thanx in Advance

Slight alteration made to the guide; "2. Unplug the Xbox HDD IDE cable from the back of the drive,"
That answers that one...
I have no idea about "Xbox.Auto-HDPrep.Tools.V2-DungeonX" and as I say in the guide, I really am not able to help if things go badly wrong (or with evox/font exploit as Tsurani wrote that) simply because I didn't have anything go wrong myself.
There is NO Windows based alternative to HDD Driver right now.

That's the nfo from Xbox.Auto-HDPrep.Tools.V2-DungeonX. By the description, if my HD is fucked up, then I just need to boot this CD then choose "Repair Retail XboXHD (oops forgot backup? - return hd to original state)". Oh well, looks like I'll need to freee up some space on my HD
lol
But that plug is pretty damn hard hehe
Now Im going to try it..I will report back later
Hey BoomDivx! I hope you could get your HD to work again and I really hope I dont screw mine
I have heard many horrible stories about issues with this exploit but I must try it out
well, I didn't screw it, I just want to know BEFORE fucking it up
lol cause I have a small HD in my PC and the backup will take 12GB on the 20GB I have, so I'm searching for another way to put everything back to the original state without the backup
The boot CD you mentionned is only working on a modded Xbox : if you're trying to do the exploit with a new xbox and its locked HDD and you screw something on your HDD, there is no way for you to boot with this CD !! The only way you've got to get your HDD back to normal is to restore a backup from your computer !!!!

thx
but if my HD is ok and I want to restore it to normal to play LIVE, can I use this disc?
i couldnt get this method to work on a 1.0
here are the specs:
v1.0
kernel: 4034
live updated dash (sorry cant remember the number for it)
if u cant get this to work, i posted a tutorial on how to use xlinux for it. that was the only method i could get to work. so that si always an alternative. here is the url: http://forums.xbox-s...ST&f=45&t=74925
If anyone who successfully does *either* part of the tutorial could please leave your Xbox version and kernel/dash info, it'd be very much appreciated.
I am having trouble getting my computer to recognize my Xbox drive. From what I have tried, it seems that my second IDE cable will not recognize any hard drive, whether it be the one from my Xbox or the one in my computer. I unplugged my second IDE cable from my DVD drive and my CD burner and connected this to Xbox hard drive, but there was no recognition. So I then set out to see if the IDE cable would detect any hard drive at all, so I disconnected my first IDE cable from my computer hard drive and plugged in the one I had used on my Xbox. There was no recognition in this case either, as my computer would not even boot up. The IDE cable has always worked fine with my disc drives. Anybody know how to get both drives connected so I can still boot my system and copy the contents of my Xbox hard drive onto my computer hard drive?
I have a question... how do you create a folder in the xbox using this method... I mean, for the exploit to run it asks you to copy the content of the !Complex folder to the HDD but how so?? is there a way I can make a DIR ?¿? or do I copy the content of the dir to the system directory??
Thanx in advance

If you've tried both the first and alternate method of drive swapping (including the note about trying various BIOS detection settings) without any luck, I'm afraid there *is* a chance you may have one of these PC's out there which simply won't respond to the Xbox HDD at all. There are a few things you can try but they obviously carry a significant risk-factor since they relate to PC hardware.
The fact that even a 2nd PC HDD wouldn't be accepted though suggests - after discussion with a colleague which confirmed my thoughts - it is more likely you need to alter your PC BIOS drive detection settings as it sounds like it is set up to expect the CD/DVD drive to be there. PC BIOS's come in many thousands of different configurations so I can't be very specific, and BIOS changes aren't something I would encourage people to try for obvious reasons. The other possibility is that it is something relating to the "slave/master" jumper settings on your drives but again I can't advise on that in detail.

You could try somewhere more PC-specific and would be as well forgetting about the Xbox HDD entirely until you can at least get your PC to detect a normal HDD on that IDE cable. The forums at www.pcformat.co.uk are often quite good for technical help.
Best of luck.

First of all, thanks for the tutorial. I was able to get this working thanks to you, but I think a couple of things need clarification.
The exploit that I downloaded contained bert.xtf, ernie.xtf, and default.xbe. Applying these three files alone resulted in the xbox booting to a black screen with the xbox-linux webpage address in white text, nothing else (I posted about this a few pages back). According to the tutorial, it should have taken me to evo-x. I'm sure there are a lot of these exploit packs out there by now and I was simply using a different one than you did. Perhaps clarify a bit as to what exploit package you were using.
I used free-xevox which required me to bring over the 'Skin' folder. Since this is not possible, I renamed the Audio folder to 'Skin' and the subdirectory 'AmbientAudio' to 'PheoniX' and put the skin in there. Once I could boot the x-box to evo-x, I ftp'd in and created a new 'Audio' folder, and copied all of the contents from the (now named) 'Skin' folder (minus the skin) into the new Audio folder. (Renaming 'PheoniX' back to 'AmbientAudio', of course.)
Like I said, it's a great tutorial for the most part, and I certainly wouldn't have gotten it working without it. I just figured that if I had these problems, more than likely other people will run into them as well.
if I use the audio xploit, do I still need to make a HD backup? I mean, you rename the old files with the .bak extension, but if you messed your HD, then just rename the file back would resolve the problem, isn't it?
Well, I got it to WORK!! hehehehe I'm runnig XBOX V1, don't know the dashboard ver. but kernel is 4034, ...... like flashram, I renamed the "audio" folder to "!Loader" , and the "AmbientAudio" to "patches" and put the files in there.... The complex loader started ... I put in a DVD-R (Halo) , I pressed White, and the game loaded up!! .... So now I'm going to check anything else....
Thanx
Hey Everyone!
I have been following the Guide but Im stuck in the Hot Swap Step
I turn on my Xbox and I wait 10 mins as the guide says..then the Xbox screen goes black (like a screensaver) so I unplug the IDE cable from the back of the Drive and connect it to the 2nd IDE of my PC...
Then I turn on my PC and it says "Detecting IDE Drives" and stays like that and after 3 mins my PC doesnt even recognize my Hard Disk...
The Q are are the following :
How can I be sure I unlocked my Xbox HD?
Is it possible to use the Xlinux step?
How can i configure my BIOS so it will recognize my Xbox HD?
If someone knows how to fix this please help me out
Thanx

That part of the tutorial is entirely dependant on which version of the (untried for my part) font exploit you have, and writing a `catch-all` tutorial going through each one is something that would be just about impossible. If you've got one of those, you're best using this as a guide to HDD swapping and then referring back to the readme.txt that comes with your exploit. There's just too damn many of them out there now.
BoomDivx - why on earth *wouldn't* you want an emergency backup of your Xbox HDD? It's the sensible thing to do when making changes of any kind to the files. If you're willing to skip a step like that one, maybe you really shouldn't be thinking about trying this with any exploit.
yes i got it to work with the renaming of the folders can anyone now please tell me how to install games and stuff ?
I manage to get my PC recognizing my Xbox HDD but then HDD Driver would just give me infinite errors and Im unable to browse my HDD
Can I use Xlinux instead of HDD Driver?
Please Help Me Out
I just want to try to find another way cause I have a damn small HD on my PC (only 20GB) and I don't have the money to buy another one. Even if I burn everything on CD, I think I'll not have enough space. But the backup takes 11-12GB???? why is it so big? I mean, there's nothing else on the HD: no mp3, some save game, font, etc. What are the files that takes so much space on the HDD??
*just trying to get some answer before opening my box... and messe it up
*
ARRRRGGGHHHH...... got the hot swap down to a tee ..just cant get past the invalid files size to modify the directory .. any help greatly appreciated ..
i have read the post on hexing the image but its far too complicated for me and i have loads of instances of fatx in there will i screw it if i change them all ?
why does this work for some people but not others ..is it The DLL versions im using with HDD_DRIVER or is it a case of filling my XBOX HD WIth audio so there are no empty partitions ???
Really would like to get this exploit running ...please help lots of people have the same problem there must be a reason why it works for some and not others ??????????

Even if I burn everything on CD, I think I'll not have enough space. But the backup takes 11-12GB???? why is it so big? I mean, there's nothing else on the HD: no mp3, some save game, font, etc. What are the files that takes so much space on the HDD??
*just trying to get some answer before opening my box... and messe it up * |
It's because it isn't a copy of the files, it's an image file of the entire drive contents, empty space and all so that it can be restored to its exact original state bit for bit.
oh well, just bought a new HD (120GB should ne enough
). My wallet hurts so much! lol When I'm trying the hot-swap trick, my bios detect the HD but when windows XP is loading, I'm stuck there (where you see the Windows XP logo with the animated loading bar). It just load, and load and load...
edit
found answers above...
ok, so i screwed up. here's what happend: i used the font exploit in an attempt to get evox running. i renamed the audio folder to skin and one of the others to pheonix and put the pheonix skin files in there. when i rebooted the xbox, i got the green screen of death with an error code of 16, which i believe is a dashboard setting error (probably caused by renaming the audio folder). i tried starting it with a game as well, but to no avail (same problem occurs).
i assume that the error code (16) would imply that the hd is being unlocked, so i was thinking about trying to swap before the dash fails, but i dont want to screw up the drive...
if anyone knows a way i could unlock it, or get the password, or maybe something else that might work
your input would be greatly appreciated. thnx
if my question's been answered already, feel free to flame me, but atleast point me to the post
My PC has a small HD too (around 18 GBs)
Has anyone got a link so I can fix the empty partition problem?
Also if you cant get HDD Driver to work use XLINUX..burn the ISO image to a CD and boot it from your Bios
hum... I could try xlinux, but do I need to solder anything??? And can I boot xlinux with a cd-rom on the same IDE cable as my xbox HDD? cause right now, I have 2 HD on the first IDE then the XBOX HDD on the 2nd one, so no cd left for booting :S
p.s. The bios detect the HDD, the device manager detect it but "my computer" doesn't show it
BoomDivX With xlinux via hot swapping you do NOT need to solder anything. And NO you cannot hotswap your xbox HDD with another device on that same IDE cable. You don't even need those two PC HDDs.
Here's the Setup.
Primary Master IDE : PC HDD
Primary Secondary IDE : CD Drive with xlinux ISO
The Secondary Master IDE should be empty.
As for the ps. You hot swap AFTER the Pause Breaking right after the usualy IDE device detection. So you don't need your PC Bios to detect it whatsoever. As soon as you switch the IDEs you enter or space to break the pause and let xlinux boot up.
They'll be no command prompt so you'll have to press Enter. and it'll pause for a second so you don't press anything at all until you get a command prompt. From here on out. I can give you directions on what to do. But i'll need to know what dashboard you have. Pre Live Update 4920 or before 4920.
I have the 4817 kernel and 4920 dash
I'm not too familiar trying the Bert is Cheating on Ernie exploit on a 4817.. But I did do the required 4034 Kernel.. I took the guys to try it on a 4034 dashboard as the Bert & Snuff exploit exploit REQUIRED a 4920 dash.. Still worked like a charm.
So I can tell you to try.. but you're risking it.. What other exploit are you planning?
well, just trying to find one exploit that will work. I can try any exploit, as long as I can do a backup of my original HDD
k, now I have xLinux ready to boot, what should I do?
So I connected my harddrive to my PC just as described in the guide...no problem. I booted, my BIOS recognized the drive, so I thought that I was home free, but Windows wouldn't finish booting, it just sat on the black windows screen with teh progress bar running across the screen forever.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thats the easy part..well at least for me..the difficult part is to run HDD Driver without those infinites File Sizes Errors..
Thats why Im going to use XlinuX
BoomDivx
You can find a easy tutorial about Xlinux on this forum..Do a search
If you still cant find the tutorial Ill post it here..its pretty long but useful.
Now someome please help me with this
Wich of the plugs of the IDE cable is the Master and Secondary?
Is the one in the middle the secondary?
@xilicio: Thanks for the help
Are you asking about the plugs on the motherboard or on the actual cable? If it's the cable that you're asking about then normally it doesn't matter which plug you use, the devices connected to it determine the master and slave.
Just make sure you read this thread
http://forums.xbox-s...ST&f=45&t=74925
Yeah I was referring to the cable..thanx to you too
Also make sure you back up your Xbox HDD
Just a thought - can you backup the Xbox HD with Ghost or something similar. This means that if you do f**k up your HD then you can restore it no problem.
Also does any of these exploit methods alter flash memory which would mean you would need to take flash/bios backups as well ?
Cheers

Hey Again!
Ragenb
The same thing happens to me when I Hot-swap my Xbox HDD with my PC turned off. The solution is to turn ON your PC..let it boot XP then do the Hot Swap..If your PC doesnt automatically recognize the HDD then dont worry..go to Control Panel and add it manually. Thats the easy part..well at least for me..the difficult part is to run HDD Driver without those infinites File Sizes Errors.. Thats why Im going to use XlinuX

Well, I have the same problem as Ragenb. windows install the HD but can't show it in "My Computer". I can see it in the device manager.
And for the xLinux solution, I can't use it. Yes, I'll be able to see the HDD, but what about making a backup of it? In the tutorial, they tell us to go into windows to make it... I'm confused...
It won't show up in "My computer" and there is no need for it to show up. Windows will not recognise the formatting of the Xbox HDD or understand its organization/MBR. If it did we'd have no need for HDD Driver...
If you're planning on using Xlinux (or any Linux) instead, you'd be as well heading to the Xbox Linux Project site documentation, as this tutorial is of little use unless you're going through Windows because it's OS specific.
well, I stuck... I took a screenshot of the problem. I see the HDD in the device manager (good!!) but HDD Driver doesn'T detect it (very bad...)
http://eleves_tim.cm...help_please.jpg
@BoomDivx
Windows cant display the Xbox HD in device manager because it doesnt ¨understand¨ the Xbox partition/file system.
Thats why you gotta use HDD Driver..Do this to backup..
Boot Windows XP
The when everything is loaded Hot Swap your HDD (the pc should see it but if that doesnt happens dont worry)
Now open HDD Driver and ignore the infinite errors..go to TOOLS and BACKUP..wait 30mins and thats it
@johnt
I have heard that you CAN do that..try searching the forums
Well now I need some help
Does anyone know the Xlinux Webpage? So i can learn how to use it

I think it's in the linux project page: http://xbox-linux.sourceforge.net/ but don't know here
what about the screenshot I posted?
alright i might just be retarded but the only thing i can get to load up using the exploit is the linux it comes with i cant get evox !loader or any other dashboard to load up my xbox keeps restartiing with the fonts and the audio exploit tells me my xbox needs servicing when i do the sound track thing can anyone help?
Yeah, I need Xlinux too. I can't get HDD Driver to see my xbox drive, and I'm sick of holding my breath every time I hotswap this.. it's like asking for trouble
I can't find it anywhere. not on google, not on here..
i've got a 4920 dash and a 4034 kernel. i haven't gotten anything accomplished yet apparently, but i'm waiting on confirmations from other people before proceeding.
so.. if i could get this xlinux i might go ahead and try again. but hdd driver just isn't seeing shit for me...
Xlinux1c.rar is located on #xbins (efnet) FTP server
Is in the PC section...
noob question, if and when I do this will XBOX Live work? And when this exploit boots with evox, is it as if I had a modchip installed? Does this mean the end of Modchips? BTW I am just another dickhead dealing with easybuy2k waiting for my Chameleon chip to come in the mail, should I just wait for the chip to ship or cancel?
no one can answer me?? please!! look at the post before, the one with the screenshot
Well, I fried my XBOX trying to do this trick. It happend when I tried to change the IDE cable from the XBOX's to the PC's. I spent about a minute because i couldn't line it in properly because i didn't want to unscrew my harddrive. I felt a slight surge of electricity: it was hardly anything. And I don't understrand it either. I'm an engineering major, but this makes no sense to me: I felt a surge even though I was only touching the plastic cradle the harddrive is screwed into. I wasn't even touching anything metallic (aside from the IDE cable in my other hand, but it was insullated. Anyway, my PC didn't recognize any harddrives (possibly because I had two on my primary IDE and the XBOX's on the secondary; maybe the cable select or whatever was the problem). Anyway, I just figured I'd try it again, so I hooked up the harddrive back to the XBOX's IDE cable.
Now on bootup, my XBOX's Flubber intro loads, but it stops at the "XBOX" screen, before the little MS label on the bottom loads. If I leave it like this for about 5 minutes, it gives me a screen in about 6 languages saying my XBOX needs service.
I'm gonna return it to Best Buy this week. I bought the 2 year service plan at launch and the contract doesn't say anything about opening the case voiding the warranty. And besides, they probably won't even check the silver label to see if I opened it. Anyway, the bad thing is now if they do exchange it, I'm gonna have a version 1.3 instead of my 1.0. So my modding possibilites are limited. Oh well, just BE WARNED.
@inneedofhelp
that was very smart to assume you can hotswap with a screwed down xbox hdd... engineering degree my ass.. you shoud have given yourself enough space to do the hotswap swiftly and quickly .. freaking 4 torx screws that's all it takes to not struggle to squeeze in a damn IDE channel.. you should have taken heed of your own warning..
Agree with that
I have opened my Xbox like 15th times and I never have a problem...
my comp never detects my xbox hd. do i have have to change the jumpers on the xbox hd to slave so my computer detects it?
Get sure you set your PC CDROM as slave (jumpers) in IDE SLOT 1 with the PC HDD as Master.
Just plug the Xbox HDD in IDE slot 2 alone when its unlocked
i can see the xbox hd in device manager but hdd driver doesnt detect it
read the guide, can do everything but what files to get? YOU DON'T SAY THAT ON THE BEGINNING!
what should i download from xbins?
i have a V1.1 xbox

bert cheating on ernie saz:

| Only works with a 4034 retail bios. |
I tried the update using a copy of bert and ernie
(Bert_is_Cheating_on_Ernie_-_The_Pheonix_Project.rar)
this caused the dashboard to get stuck in a reboot cycle. is this the right exploit for the job and if not cause someone tell me where i can get the right one.
Here is my dilemma.
Last night I decided to try this for fun, and well I was unable to get the hard drive swap working properly. I turned on the xbox, let it sit at the dashbord thing(where it says settings, xbox live, etc) for roughly 7 minutes. The screen dimmed down, and I figured to go ahead and attempt it. I held the hard drive up however and it was still spinning, and I thought it was supposed to spin down, but I ignored it.
So I unplugged the IDE cable from the back of the drive, and once I did I heard a single "pop" sound and the drive to start spin back up a little from the sound of things and settled back down. Then I hooked it up to my Shuttle(specs if anyone needs it) and started to boot up. I first hooked it up and let it sit and entered the BIOS. Drive doesn't show up. I then did the pause break thing, still no go. So I rebooted it, made sure teh connections were proper, changed the jumper settings to no jumper since the Western Digital setup with no jumper means a single drive.
I started it back up, and I didn't notice if the drive was detected(I doubt still it was) because the BIOS only displays a Pentium 4 HT screen all day long. When Windows XP Pro was starting up, it took a ridiculous long amount of time. I could say anywhere from 5-10 minutes which usual was less then 30 seconds. When I logged in, the new hardware icon was in the bottom right of the screen, and it installed a WDC driver which was for a Western Digital drive. Baffled, I thought it worked. Started up the HDD_Driver prog. then it errored out with the .dll stuff, so I fetched them, and it loaded up without any errors. Then the dreaded:
"Got some bad news. Could not detect an Xbox HDD on Ide0:Ide255" <---Not verbatim, just what I can remember.
When I goto My Computer -> Properties -> Devices Tab -> Device Manager it shows the drive under the disks.
Did the Hot swap not work or work? And also, any suggestions? TIA.
Well i wonder why all you guys get it wrong.
You must press pause on your PC when the BIOS has already detected
the harddisk...
Best is when you see the configuration table before windows/linux it booting.
At this time you must press pause and do the swap trick.
If you will do it in the BIOS it will get reset before windows is loaded
and locked again...
its strange how people are having so much trouble with the swap trick... its easy... all i do is turn on my xbox.. wait 10 mins... while waiting turn on my pc and press pause BEFORE the HDD auto detection... when the 10mins is up unplug the xbox ide cable and plug in the pc one.. press space bar and let windows load up... no problems!
apart from HDD Driver being a bit of a bitch.. but i'm gonna use xlinux instead seeing as i know what i'm doing with linux anyway!
Hi all;
i made all the steps and all seems to work
just one pb : i have lof ot messages on hdd-driver "invalid filename size" , i press ok all the time but at the end the soft turn off.
is there any solution for this ?
Thanks.

Yes I agree that he tried to warn us out of sincerity but as most of knows, there always has been the usual technical risks and hazards that come from even trying the hotswapping. It takes guts to get the courage to risk turning your $200 piece of equipment into a doorstop.
But it was his mistake to even further the odds of something bad happening by being lazy to unscrew 4 simple torx screws. Why don't you just try hotswapping with wet hands as well?
inneedofhelp no offense from what i said earlier but dude next time don't do a technical prodecure only halfway or with shortcuts. it'll only create more problems for you down the road. other than that at least you'll get a fresh draft of air coming through room all thanks to your doorstop.
Listen up EnigmusSnake:
The only reason why I didn't unscrew the torx screws was because it seemed as though i had enough room, so I didn't want to expose the powersupply during this swap and risk crashing the harddrive (which in essence happend anyway). As circuitbreaker said, I only said all of this to warn you. I was trying to give you a heads up on how fragile this trick is.
I'm gonna try to exchange it in Best buy tomorrow for a new one. The Best Buy 2 year warranty doesn't explain that opening the system voids the warranty. Anyway, I dounbt the person will even check the silver label.
For the record, I too did the hotswap trick myself without removing the Xbox HDD initially, it's nothing crazy to try as long as your cable can reach, then after about 5 or 6 times I almost screwed up and decided to unscrew it. Perhaps I'll add that as an advised step... but he is right to warn people all the same and it does demonstrate that there is an inherent danger in messing around with a $200 / £130 box of electrical components. Anyone trying it "for fun", my advice - really, really, DON'T.
As for the swap trick being hard for some people - PC BIOS variation at work. What works on one will not work on all, hence generalisation in the guide.
Zelos - this is answered somewhere around this thread I believe.
I have a problem, how i can add with hdd_driver the directory !loader with the files in system dir???
Thanks!
i know there is already a guide for openining the xbox on this site but it would be nice to add it to this guide to make it complete if you could dude
Yes... and while I'm at it I could add steps on how to plug it in and turn on the power too.
If people can't figure out how to pick up a screwdriver without a detailed guide, again they have no business going near the internals of an Xbox. I give people more credit than that. Well... slightly.
I did exactily what you said to do to unlock the drive but I got to where you have to run the hdd program and it says it cannot find the drive. I tryed it over and over but it gives me the same error. The drive is found by the bios and divice manager. what should I do?
@Calvin
Do the Hot Swap trick when XP is fully loaded..
Then go to Control Panel/Add Hardware
Make your PC find it...if it doesnt dont worry because it did..
Then go to HDD Driver and it should say it found it..
If that doesnt work..make sure your CDROM is set as slave in IDE 1...and your Xbox HD as master in IDE 2 alone.
yes, i start winxp with the xbox disk as master to second channel, after disconnect it, and connect to xbox, turn on xbox, wait 5 minutes, and now reconnect hdd to pc!
so, xp is just ready to see hdd, and the hdd is unlock!!!
but now, how do you do to create dir in xbox hdd???
the my problem is this!!!
ciao
at the boot, after the bios logo,i see a image and after....
...it give me:
Your Xbox Require Service.......

how i can unlock the disk now????
thats just happened to my xbox too i got error number 09 in the corner what is your error number?
benjo, that's what happenned to me. I believe it means that we fried our harddrives. Well, I did it by not changing the IDE cables fast enough (the hdd began to make a scanning noise even though I hadn't put the PC's IDE in yet). From the feedbac I've been getting the past two days, it seems as though I can't do anything to fix it other than getting a modchip and a new harddrive (any harddrive should work by formatting it through EvoX I believe).
Hope this helped.
the xbox give me a error 21!
but it starts from hdd, i see a picture, i think a logo and after it give me the error!
i think i have damage the partition with hdd driver, i make backup, modified fatx entry and after restore!
i have ver.1.0 with 4034 bios!
azzz....
and now?
i try to prepare a disk!
can i make it?
anyone ever get this error from HDD driver?
The procedure entry point_chkesp could not be located in the dynamic link library MSVCRTD.dll.
i've got that dll...but i dont have any idea what it means...
it meant i had 2 old of a version of the file...sorry to have bother'd anyone..
every one i see try this got thier xbox fucked up you asshole
can i format and add the files to my xbox hardrive and then lock it so i dont have to do any swap tricks?
Well, to all those people that think they fried their HDD, I think not, just to make sure... in my HDD i had no problem hot wapping and copying files, but in a friend's HDD i had the "invalid size error" msg, after correcting it, and copying files, etc. the xbox didn't worked, error msg 06, error msg 21, xbox boot in a loop, but then I did the hot swap again and make a backup, how? Well, this is how I did it... it may differ for others but it may help...
1.- turn off the PC and the xbox
2.- disconect any device for the 2nd IDE cable of your PC, also, conect a power cable of the computer on the XBOX HDD, and conect the IDE cable of the XBOX on the XBOX HDD
3.- Turn on your PC, wait until the keyboard led is turned completely on, and in that moment (about 5 seconds after you pressed the power button), press the pause key on the keyboard (I use a PS2 keyboard, not a USB).
4.- Now turn on your XBOX, and do the hot swap BEFORE you get to the part where the xbox logo freezes, it can be while the green energy ball is moving on your screen..... (in this part you have to do unplug the IDE cable of the xbox quickly, but it doesn't matter if you take some time to plug the PC 2nd IDE to the XBOX HDD).
5.- Now press enter on the PC keyboard... WinXP should load fine and HDD Driver should detect the HDD
Also, when you want to copy the complex loader, keep in mind that, besides the bert and ernie files, you have to copy all the files in the C folder to your HDD, with directory names and all (the !loader dir, patches dir, default.xbe, etc)
C'Ya
ueee, elvato, i'd want to copy all the file that i find in c folder, but how i can create a dir???

Unfortunately, you can't create dirs with HDD driver, but you can Rename dirs, so what I did was ... rename the "Audio" folder to "!loader" and copy the files in there, also I renamed the "ambientaudio" follder to "patches", and put the files in there, after that complex loader started, Now you can just FTP in and make a the corrections you need...

I'm having a major problem. I initially thought my harddrive was fried (it may still be true
) But now I plugged my XBOX Harddrive into the PC again, buth this time, I disconnected my 2nd harddrive (a primary slave) and my PC booted normally and my XBOX harddrive was displayed in the POST, and WinXP detected it as STxxxxxxA (or whatever) and seemed to be working as the tutorial said. Hwoever, hd driver doesnt detect the harddrive, it says "bad news". What should I do? Should I change the jumper to single instead of cable select? Thanx
I am having the EXACT SAME problem as inneedofhelp. If enyone can help us I would be very grateful. I have my master slave hd on IDE 1 and my xbox on IDE 2. My xbox is all by it's self on ide 2, I dont have anything else atched to my computer besides my zip but thats on my pc hd on ide 1. the bios AND divice manager both detect the drive. But the HDD_driver program dose not detect it.
i have my master in primary channel and nothing in the second channel, and the xbox hdd connect to pc after 5-10 minutes after start xbox, and the pc is in winxp, so i go to device manager and refresh it....
if you have some problem to see the xbox hdd, play some game for some minutes, and after disconnect hdd from console and connect to pc....
try...
Xbox V1.1
K:4817
D:4920
Exploit: bert and ernie reloaded running Evox 1.8 3752 signed successfully
Motherboard: K7S5A
PC HD IDE1, Xbox HD IDE 2
Windows XP Pro with Visual Basic 6.0 installed.
Things I wish I knew when trying this:
1. I had the same problem that many people have been having with Windows and the bios detecting the driver, but HDD driver inevitably not seeing it. If you get this, it means the HD is still locked and thus inaccessible.
Clues you have a locked drive: a. Windows takes longer than normal to load, the nefarious hanging on the black startup screen.
b. Whenever you try to access the drive in Computer Management it not only hangs but you notice that the HD led blinks on and off periodically without reading anything.
c. The blinking HD led also occurs when you get HDD driver to try to access the drive, but then it delivers the bad news
I tried the HD swap several times using the connect drive then power on pc method to no avail. The only way it worked was to use the pause-break method, just after ram check. Now this anomaly may be mobo dependent, but my theory is that during the POST or following a cold boot the xbox drive is relocked.
2. The xbox drive will not appear in explorer or be accessible except through HDD driver.
3. Also, HDD driver may give you errors of some invalid call functions when adding or renaming files and closes. Just ignore them. It is still making the proper file changes.
4. Dumping does not require 10-15gbs if you have an empty xbox HD, more like 4.5gb. You can also specify the location of the dump file.
5. You MUST use the rename method for the skins folder as per other posts for Free-xEvox to work.
6. Once you get this up you can run any dashboard just remember to sign it with xbedump.
7. When hot swapping, the hd does not to appear to ever completely spin down as it accesses it for the ambient background noises. Waiting until the screensaver kicked in seemed to work for me. Try also to time the disconnect with the least ambient sounds and do it in one clean motion.
Best of luck, hope this clears some confusion and enjoy!
Well, now it seems as though my harddrive is reasonably okay, but it is locked. Now the thing that really gets me sad
is that when I put the harddrive in my XBOX and turn it on, it won't load the dashboard and the green "X" and "XBOX" appear, but the white "MS" does not. Then after a few minutes, the "Your XBOX requires service" screen comes up. I can't load my dashboard or an original game disc. What the hell is wrong with my XBOX??? I really hope it's just the harddrive (then I can fix it by modding my box and formatting a new harddrive).
It workd!
How do you get !loader on the xbox? It'snt that needed to play backup games? Can I put !loader on after I finish the hot-swap?
uhh, i don't know if anyone asked this already, did not read through all 9 pages, but can I use config magic to unlock xbox hdd and then attach to pc instead of loading box up then swapping hdd.
Im also having problems hotswapping with my friends v1.1 xbox.
Okay, I waited 10 minutes unplugged xbox ide and swapped with pc ide (secondary master.) Then i turned the pc on and it didnt detect the drive (maybe i needed to set my bios up) so i turned both machines off and swapped ide plugs back.
Now when i boot the xbox i get error 16 and if i put a game in i get error 07. error 16 is meant to be a problem loading the dash or something and 7 means the hdd is unlocked
So.... after that i tried the hotswap again on the xbox error screen and the pc still didnt detect it.
And finally now i goto boot the xbox and i get error 05 HDD Timeout??
What should i do??
got error 07 when I boot, even with a game. Looks like I'll have to put a modchip inside
i swear theres a split second when the hard drive is unlocked CAN SOME ONE PLEASE POST A VIDEO OF A WORKING SWAP THIS WOULD HELP EVERY ONE SOOOOOO MUCH!!!!!
ok I FINALLY got evox to run on my xbox and it works GREAT! but there is a problem. Thats all I can RUN! I cant get eny program to work. when I try to run a program it gives me a 21 error! enyone know what I can do to fix this?
Wow, will you people read what the guides say? it says it clear as day:
DON'T expect your PC to IDENTIFY the xbox. Don't have it scan it during init. It will just lock it again.
Some guides say to hit BREAK on the keyboard after your BIOS does the hard drive scan. then do the swap, then hit BREAK again to continue booting.
Boot Xlinux, or windows then HDD Driver and do your thing.
You people need to do a lot more reading before you crack open your x-box. you're just gonna end up with a dead x-box hd by doing a hotswap over and over...
isn't the evox dash in ernie is cheating on bert already signed?
and another pointer, to people maybe having a hard time with drive setup..
I think the ideal solution would be this (correct me if wrong, please):
on your PRIMARY IDE channel (cable) you'd put your normal Windows or Linux HD (as probably already is) as MASTER, then your CDROM drive as SLAVE.
on your SECONDARY IDE channel (cable) you'd have your X-box hd. using whatever hotswap trick.
That would be the setup if you were trying to use HDD Driver or a Linux kernel off of your PC's main hard drive. You could do an XLinux CD boot this way too. The idea is to let the x-box hard drive have free reign over a whole IDE channel itself (this channel, being the IDE cable can have 2 devices on it). because typically if you have to have 2 devices on a channel, you have to configure one to master and the other slave so they behave properly. There might be very good reason why all the guides say to put it on seperate channel..
When a computer first turns on, the BIOS sends signals to the hard drives to spin up and prepare themselves for boot. the x-box hard drive has some special mechanism that unlocks it, so you let the x-box unlock the hard drive when it turns on. then do the hotswap to a normal pc while it's unlocked. it should be unlocked any time after the x-box finishes booting. it's just that you would want to wait until the drive goes into a sleep mode (where maybe the platter spins down), where the chance of damaging it during hotswap is minimal.. just don't yank it while it's doing something.
for Linux:
hda = primary ide channel, master
hdb = primary ide channel, slave
hdc = secondary ide channel, master
hdd = secondary ide channel, slave
the numbers after the drive device name (example: hda1) denote the partition on the disk.
hope that clarifies things for some people.
why are people having such trouble... i managed to get it working fairly easy.. then i had trouble.. so i tried a different method.. just read the instructions and follow it step by step... and to make taking out the IDE cable easier.. lift up the xbox hdd (holding it on the sides).. this will make it MUCH easier...just dont shake it around or drop it lol..
i could do it using the "press pause BEFORE detection of hard drives" but then after the 4920 update that didn't work?? very odd.. so then i used to "press pause AFTER detection" and it worked like a charm!... and please people.. only use HDD Driver to backup the drive... its bloody useless for adding/editing files... use xlinux... its not as hard as you may think!
A lot of people seems to have problem How Swaping the Xbox HDD..so I`ll explain how I did it in the 1st try
Boot up Windows XP
Turn ON your Xbox and wait about 10 mins...when the screen goes dark then it`s unlocked!
OR load a game in the Xbox and leave it in a Menu for about 5 mins (Ex: I used Splinter Cell and leave it in the Sound options)
Now swap your HDD...be sure! it`s on Secondary IDE set as master without anything..
Your CDROM must be Primary Slave to do this
The go to Control Panel/Add Hardware and make a search..if your PC doesnt find anything dont worry..is because the OS cant read FATX so it cant recognize it..
The open HDD Driver and Voila!
---XLINUX METHOD---
Turn your XBOX on and wait for 10 mins so it`s unlocked
Turn ON your PC and go to the BIOS settings...Make it to boot from the CDROM
The Reboot your PC and just AFTER the IDE detection press the PAUSE/BREAK button
Now Hot Swap!
After the Hot Swap press enter..and Xlinux should boot!
(If xlinux doesnt boot then you did something wrong with the BIOS settings or you made a Bad image)
hi there,
ive read all the postings but found nothing about my prob.
my pc finds the xbox hdd, it is located in hdd_driver too. and shows me some folders system....if try to expand the system folder to change to that font files, hdd_driver hangs and closes.
did i need any newer dll or something?
thx for all help
yeah its well buggy.... try using right-click and just insert into directory.....left click seems to crash it more but it will crash alot just reload and you will see your changes
Oh BUGGER!
well i guess thats it then.
i tried all the variants of the hot swap i could think of, i tried leaving it on the dash for ages, and on splinter cell music menu for ages, then i tried connecting it to my pc and booting up, it saw my hd when it loaded, but then it took frikin ages to load into xp, then once in xp it wasnt shown in explorer nor in hdd_driver or in system etc etc... i tried doing the pause break method and basicly same thing happened, then i tried putting the ide back onto my xbox hd, and got error 13, ur xbox needs service blah blah blah then i reboted and it gave me error 12 or 14 cant remember, then error 21 now it gives me error 07 and its stuck like that. i tried re connecting it to my pc and now it doesnt detect it at all, which it did before, but just not in windows. so i guess ive fux0red it right up. nevermind, ill keep trying everything i can think of to get it to work and ill let u know my results.. if any1 has any ideas then please let me know.
btw i was using a non updated dash.. dunno what version,
i have a v1.1 xbox and 4817 kernel.
no chance anyway to see the files in the folder foe example the system folder, if i click it hdd_driver crashes and closes.
to only just insert the files dont work in the way i did, i injected the files from Bert_is_Cheating_on_Ernie_-_The_Pheonix_Project. theres a evox.ini 2x*.xtf and one default.xbe file.
i inserted all files in the system folder. but after reboot of xbox an error 13 appears.
do i have to install xbox live dash first or should that exploids work with any dash?
help would be great!! thx alot
again if only one person could post a video every one might not have this problem
and btw for those who say have your computer on and in xp when swap uh sounds scary
anyone getting error 21 or error 19 or error 07 or almost any kind of error then you have fecked up your xbox and its gonna need one of 2 things
1. return your xbox and hope you get a new one
2. buy a mod chip and a new hard drive and download that backup cd program that can install all the data and format your hard drive into an xbox hard drive
ok my bad so the you can plug your hard drive well in xp ok im wrong
but now my prob is now im in the hdd driver program and i click the error msg 50 times and it just comes right back up
1 min later after holding enter ok i got through the error messages then finaly i got a program error and it closed.....
oh and im using windows 2000
so.. after error 07 the hard drive is totaly screwed? thats anoying, i didnt even write anything to the drive, it just didnt like the hot swap thingy.
is there no way of recovering it at all?
is there any way of putting a new hd (bigger) into the xbox without a modchip?
are there no programs that will format it and put the files on and then lock it or whatever so that the xbox doesnt know the difference?
i dont mind buying a new hd because i wanted a bigger one in it anyway, just i dont wanna bugger about with buying a mod chip.
ok is there a boot disk or something im getting sick of using hdd driver
NO ONE TRY THIS ANYMORE JUST GO BUY A MEGA X KEY or a MODCHIP
MEGA X KEY Or there are many modchip websites
This hotswap sucks ass. Everyone winds up reuining there hard drive and have to buy a new one
Save yourself the hassle and time and your hadrvie just go buy a mega x key or a modchip. THIS hotswap is bullcrap RUINING all these peoples hard drives. Modchips or mega x key is way easier.
man i dont have a credit card for the key crap allot of people here dont id rather find new ways.
i was told of a linux boot cd it will let you on your hd
oh and btw i head unlimited people complain that all of those sites dont actualy send the key or modchips
I dont have a Credit Card Either im 15 also the websites send you your chips because if you go to the other topics like Store Ratings you can read howthe supposrt is.. SO dont post the crap about they riip you off.
Also you can ask someone if they would put there saveonto a memory card and put it onto ur xbox and mail the card back A guy i met is doing it for me im very thankful. No im not gonna steal hismemory card if u do that your a fag. This guy is very nice for doing it
There is also something Called MONEY ORDERS email the people and theyll be glad to work something out
ya sure i bet ok i send my money then i pretend i that im going to get my package ok sounds good thumbs up!
these places are legit and they will send your modchip ive bought from mod chip companies on the net before and so have my friends i don't know anyone who has been screwed by them before infact normally they are nicer then normal companies to deal with
your an idiot. If your so friggin stupid that you think a guy who is getting money is gonna rip u off then youll tell everyone else and ose buisness jackass so they arent gonna rip you off
wow your pretty angry hmm btw i checked your site but after that i mean come on 50$ for a stupid set of lights
btw people do get rip off i dont know how hard it is to understand that its not like when im asking for one mod chip and people are asking for over 50 that they are going to give a shit about one
maybe if when your not busy getting angry you might understand
if i get a credit card i might try it one day
Thats not my site jackass. Its another guys website that is sponsored by xbox-scene. He is not gonna rip you offf. One question if he was gonna rip you off why the hell would xbox-scene support him?? You are so stupid
Okay, this may be a ridiculous question, and I attempted to read thru all the posts.....anyway, here goes. Not having a modchip, but succesfully following the tutorial, is it possible to play my backups w/o a mod?
Thanks...
heh sorry it does look pretty with all that stuff but after all that you said it sounds like you this whole time was just tryn to advertise instead of hot swaping?
sorry every one i got off subject
can any one tell me if there is a site where i can download a already made backup so i dont have to hex edit or a small program that will fit on a disk so i dont have download
over 100 meg
and yes i was told you can play backups without a mod chip

listen diphead. just because YOU were too lazy enough to unscrew 4 torx screw which lead to the frying of your xbox hdd doesn't mean that everyone else's xbox will and that this tutorial should be removed. if anything it's a lot safer than soldering the d0 points .. and like many others here i have hotswapped numerous times safely since this tutorial came out. it wouldn't be pinned if not for the testimonials of proof that this method actually works not because some lamer fried his hdd on his own laziness and blamed it on technical risks of the method. those risks did NOT have anything to do with your mistake.
to make your claims worth nothing .. since you fried your hdd while swapping .. you DID NOT get to the point where you copy the font files over and load your dash. so you have no proof that this method does not work..
quit your whining and go beg your gf or parents for a new xbox and modchip.. while you're at it remember to solder in the your new modchip with wet soapy hands while wearing sunglasses.. then bitch at the modchip forums about your botched soldering job
EnigmusSnake, I am not about to get into a long stupid debate with you, but if you fuckin read all of the posts in this thread, you'd see that this didn't just happen to me, it has happened to dozens of people. I bet half of these people didn't even read the posts of people who screwed up their XBOXs. Many people can't get this shit to work. Maybe it has to do with versions, dashboards, etc., but this is a very poor choice for someone trying to unleash their XBOX's power.
Do pieces of shit like you really get off yelling at people for trying to help others? Stop being so ignorant, I'm trying to help people.

yes most of the people here who can't get their exploit running due to dash versions and xbox versions.. or just pure techinical mistakes of renaming or accidentally deleting a file. which is still highly fixable.. i wouldn't blame them because i made the mistake of deleting my default ms dash but i was still able to hotswap and fix it and bring it back to virgin status and still had the guts to go at it again. as of now i have no problems doing what most modded xbox can do.
as for you its very rare for someone to fry their xbox via hotswap maybe one or two but none is as lazy as your method. so think about how most failures in this forum is eminating from which you'll see is common mistake of versions and file transfers NOT wobbly fat fingers.

To EnigmusSnake: Thats why there are things called POGO PIN adapters.... Also thats why they have NO SOLDER ModCHips... LOL sorry but before you call this guy an idiot. Even if people have their HD outta their xbox and sitting in ur computer its a risk at damaging your IDE cables and FRYING your XBOX HD also That HDD DRIVER is a POS program and until someone who can make a decent program that works with all computers. And everyone can succesfully do it then start making fun of him but for now just because your computer runs the HDD Driver and you didnt fry ur HD you make fun of someone who did. Hes trying to save people from frying their HD so they dont have to go out and buy a new HD. THe problem is that program is a POS and some people get multiple errors and i mean they dont stop until it closes the program out completely. Also what if someone has to keep turning their computer off and on and wating the 10-15 minutes for the HD to spin down and does it doesnt work shuts the comp off and does it again eventually your gonna fry some shit in your PC. |
dude this is not about HDD driver as i dont have win2k or xp so i used xlinux but still used the hotswap method .. so its not wether or not if HDD driver can work or not since xlinux is also the alternative that will most likely work if HDD driver is not your thing. so either way you'll always going to have good software to transfer files. but its more of the hotswapping itself which has its risks and everyone knows it. so i agree to take the safe way of getting a pogo pin modchip but like myself and inneedofhelp we took the liberty to take the risks of hotswapping.. yes still.. i consider hotswapping having the same risks (or safeties) as installing a new hd for your pc, video card, or memory banks.. still has risks of static from you not being grounded.. the difference between me and inneedofhelp is that the failures resulted in user error since inneedofhelp didn't unscrew the 4 torx screws that bolted down the harddrive so leaving him to struggle *for a minute* to hook in the IDE cable. where as i took the precautions of reading carefully the tutorials down the the memorization of the steps. and making sure i leave no margin of error. you can see who really succeeded in getting the whole hotswapping to work.
Sorry for being an asshole lol
Also some people arent running linux also how would u see your xbox? only way i know on windows xp pro edition is by using HDD DRIVER. Is there some other way cuz that program sucks donkey balls my xbox hd will read perfectly normal but my friend i met here LordVader is gonna send me the 007 exlpoit onto a memory card and get it in the mail and mail his back which is rrelaly nice of him. He bought the mega x key
I apologize if I offended you, EnigmusSnake, I'm just very disappointed about what happened. maybe you can halp me out. When I tried the hotswap, my first time ever, the length of time between unplugging my XBOX IDE and connecting my PC IDE was about 1 minute. During this time while there was no IDE cable connected to the harddrive, I heard a scanning-like noise come from it 2 or 3 times.
Now when I put it in my XBOX, I get a "Your XBOX Requires Service" screen after about 5 minutes where only the green "X" screen is displayed.
When I put the harddrive as the only drive on my Secondary IDE in my PC, it is detected by the bios and WinXP recognizes it and adds it to the device manager automatically. However, in HDD Driver, it says "Bad News - cannot find harddrive."
Do you know if this is a fried harddrive, or maybe a simple error I can fix?
the same thing happens to me, my hdd times out and i get error 7.
Does any1 know if a v1.0 western digital 8gig would work in a v1.1 xbox with a virgin 1.1 backup on it?
thanks!!! it works great!
lol im sorry to its just internet anger its a common illness
its to bad no one sells hd xbox images as a repair kit that way i can just copy it on to a new drive or fix my old drive
also this way it can come with dashboard hack and maybe an easy ftp setup
this would be realy easy for us newbs just a hint for you people selling mod kits
oh and you people that only had to click invalid file size error only 15 times or less
you have no xbox saves do you?

| its to bad no one sells hd xbox images as a repair kit that way i can just copy it on to a new drive or fix my old drive |
even if someone woul sell those image, it wouldn't work cause each xbox has his own password/key
well it beats hex editing to get the hdd driver working but your right still isnt enough for people to buy
but what about a brand new drive or hot swap the xbox drive and then you can just dump it
i think it should be explained more just how dangerous this medthod is i mean i successfully did it 4 times and on the 5th for no reason at all it broke the hd so what i am saying is that we need to be told at the start that the chances you break your hd are very high i mean everyone on this forum seems to have broke it bar about 2-3 people
Does error 07 (HDD timeout) mean my xbox hdd is Fried? i havent put any files on my xbox so nothings wrong with the dash.
Can i still hotswap it and try fix it with the exploit?
man omg people realy do ignore the warnings hmm no wonder why im so sick of seen WARNING NOT FOR NEWBS BLA BLA BLA BLA BLA AGAIN NOT FOR NEWBS how many times do this people see this and waste posts acting like there was no warning
Well I havent fried my xbox yet.. i've tried the hotswap 4 times I think and I finally got it to detect the hard drive in the 3rd try (I had it on the 3rd IDE cable rather than the 2nd... all these things look the same. yeah my comp has 3 ide cables.) The bios saw it fine, and windows XP installs the driver but I can't see it in my computer, and the the HD Driver does not see it either. I'm going to try installing Service Pack 1 (which i THOUGHT was installed) but I have a pirated windows XP version and serial so it's going to take some time to find a hack to install SP1 (I did it fine before, then formatted). I also installed the .NET Framework but that also did nothing, HD driver still didn't pick it up. I can see the hard drive in Device manager.. and I keep bending the hard drive pins in weird ways, i'm afraid i'm going to break one off one of these times and then I'll really be screwed. Oh yeah, and when I disconnect the IDE cable from the hard drive, the DVD rom makes all this noise like its seaching for a dvd, and it keeps doing this all the while. Is this normal? BTW I have the old dashboard since I have no xb live games and I dont really know anyone else who has xbox (well maybe like 2 people but they're at a casino today). alright... any help appreciated hope I dont sound like too much of a newb

If people came in here of their own free choice, and want to try this, they can't afford or just plain don't want a modchip. This stupid idea that you must have a modchip really is outdated now. This is a tutorial for people who a ) understand and b ) are willing to take this risk. You can kill your entire Xbox much easier with a modchip anyway.
And yes, people do seem to be ignoring the warnings - more fool them.

Well they've gotten all the warnings they're getting now, and thanks for pointing that out for me.
Plenty of people have tried this successfully, many unsuccessfully, and there isn't even a slight claim that people can say they didn't understand there is a risk with HDD swapping. Personally I'd say only try this if you've spent a long time thinking whether you're willing to risk not having a working Xbox any more. At all.
I can live happily without mine which is why I tried it.

Okay... I'll quote the very first few lines of the whole tutorial - maybe you'll actually read it this time;
"First thing first - NO MOD CHIP REQUIRED AT ALL as long as your Xbox is up-to-date.
Secondly - First warning. DO NOT TRY THIS UNLESS YOU UNDERSTAND THERE IS A VERY HIGH RISK OF DAMAGE OCCURING TO YOUR XBOX HDD DURING THE DRIVE SWAP PROCEDURE. CAREFULLY CONSIDER IF THE END RESULTS ARE WORTH THE RISK BEFORE YOU TRY THIS."
Now, I'm lost on exactly what part of "...VERY HIGH RISK OF DAMAGE OCCURING TO YOUR XBOX HDD...", right up there as the 2nd point of note among the various other warnings to that effect, doesn't make it explicitly clear, perhaps you can clear that up for me..?
(Oh look, that's right at the beginning of the whole tutorial and has been for days... somewhat ironic since you mentioned apparent lack of such a warning right at the start, right?)
I think I made my point here.
it worked!!!!! i have the old dashboard version, so instead of placing the .xtf's in the /fonts directory I just put them in system. I used the default.xbe from the origonal bert and ernie rar and the bert.xtf and ernie.xtf from the bert and ernie reloaded one. Ok now what can I do with evolution x?
Hey, I am a n00b at this and i want to be very carefull before i destroy my xbox so i wanted to make sure i got things right:
I have a original,unmodded(virgin) xbox
1)Does it still work even without upgrading with a xbox live game (i dont have a xbox live game)
2)If i use the audio exploit..what are the differences i can do with that and the things i can do with the font exploit?
3)Ive i in anyway got my xbox to not starting up (that wont be nice now:-() i can restore the backup and everthing is ok again? or can i also LOCK UP the hd so nothing will work?
4)If you ppl think this is not a safe way for me (i do know a lot about computers and stuff so i know what you talking about with the program and stuff)
what other way should i try (safe way)
5)if i mess up real badly like destroying my hd/can i put in a new hd and put on a backup? or if i dont have that can i get a backup from somewhere?
6)any other little things i should bare in mind before trying?
Help me plz
Ps: Nukage it seems you have it working with the old dashboard version like i want 2..so maybe you can explain exactly what you did (that would be nice)
I have a simple question. I have read a lot here and in other topics and I feel that I am ready to try this. My question is if I am careful with the Xbox drive (not banging it or droping it ect) and all I want to do is test hooking it up to see if i can get into it is there much of a chance that I will send my xbox hardrive to that great bit bucket in the sky?
A little more info. I don't plan on doing the exploit until i am REALLY sure i want to. Tho i would like to know if i can get a least so far. I guess my main question really is what seems to be doing the most of the damage the hard drive stuff (i.e. moving the ide cable, not having the drive unlocked, booting up the computer ect) or the Exploit stuff (i.e. copying the wrong file, doing it wrong all together)?
I admit to not knowing a whole lot about the enter workings of the xbox tho i am fairly handy with a PC. And just moving the drive really would not seem to hurt it unless you where not careful. And unless your computer writes to the drive its software should stay safe.
Escape2k3
you have some good questions. I have been trying to find out as much information as possible.
From HDD Driver to xlinux. From Bert_is_Cheating_on_Ernie_-_The_Pheonix_Project to ernie and bert reloaded.
I am new to xbox "scene." and I do not even have an xbox. so taking all that into consideration here is my two cents.
1)Does it still work even without upgrading with a xbox live game (i dont have a xbox live game)
answer: I do not think anyone has posted a list of working kernel numbers or dashboard numbers. It would be helpful. There in lies your answer.
Kernels
3944 I have heard does not work
4034 I have heard people were successful
I do not know the significance of the dashboard numbers
2)If i use the audio exploit..what are the differences i can do with that and the things i can do with the font exploit?
answer: I havent implemented the xploit. I do not know. what I have read is that the audio xploit is the safest. I think it boots up your original xbox dashboard. From there all you have to do to activate the hacked evox dashboard is to put in a music cd. If this is wrong, someone please corrrect me. You will still have all the fucntionality but you will just have extra steps. Audio hack is the safest bet becuase you will still have access to the old dash board I think.
3)Ive i in anyway got my xbox to not starting up (that wont be nice now:-() i can restore the backup and everthing is ok again? or can i also LOCK UP the hd so nothing will work?
People have gotten a couple of errors. Error 21, error 7 and what not. From what I can gather if you MAKE A BACKUP before you do ANYTHING with HDD Driver you should be able to restore your hd to a normal state and keep retrying. There was also a post on another thread which people have used Ghost2003 to make a back image of the hard drive. Your answer... board says yes if you back up first.
4)If you ppl think this is not a safe way for me (i do know a lot about computers and stuff so i know what you talking about with the program and stuff)
what other way should i try (safe way)
I will try not to flame. I think is a riot. THIS IS NOT A SAFE WAY. PERIOD. Look at all the warnings. Interestingly enough you state you know a lot about computers. Did you know that IDE drives are NOT HOTSWAPPABLE. They are not made to be hotswappable. This is russian roulette with your xbox. I would have to say that 20% successrate with this method on the forum so far. Flipside 80% failure
Besides blowing up your IDE bus, anynumber of things on your ps2, your xbox hard drive, your xbox, you can electrocute yourself... read the posts
Your answer. There is a TSOP mod which I thing requires a small amount of soldering and then you can flash the bios on the xbox I think I think I think... I am new so dont hurt me if I am wrong. Then there is the Matrix which is the easiest modchip to install... just screw it in and it takes 5 minutes from start to finish. Then you have your executioner 2.2 lite and excutioner 2.2 pro all with various features which are solder
http://www.xbox-scene.com/modchips/x-ecuter2_wire_diagrams.html
that will show you what is involved with the solder ones. so yes there are other options.
there is a url that compares all the chips but I cant find that one right now.
5)if i mess up real badly like destroying my hd/can i put in a new hd and put on a backup? or if i dont have that can i get a backup from somewhere?
see answer to 3. I think that you have to prepare the new HD with some application of which I dont know the name and if you have a backup then yes you can put a new HD in. Can anyone shed some light on this one? thanks.
My questions:
1.)What versions of xbox does this work for v1 or v1.1 or does all that stuff not matter and it has to do with the KERNEL version?
2.)What stops me from taking a 120 gig HD and taking the HDD backup of my xbox HD and putting on the 120 gig and slapping it in? I think that 120 would have to be preped first. What is the name of the application that I would use?
3.)Has anyone tried the method suggested where you take the xbox hard drive out, connect PC power to it, leave IDE cable from xbox in, turn pc on and PAUSE it at bios, then turn XBOX on, wait for the screen saver then try the swap, which would make it a little easier to do the IDE cable swap?
4.)can you use xbox live with this xploit... technically there is no modchip in the unit. Does yes mean you have to use the original MS dashboard and therefore can not play backups online. or does Yes mean you can play backups on Xbox live since there technically is no modchip?
There are probably people out there that tried this and did not get it to work but gave up to early. To those people I would encourage to keep trying... sometimes you can fix it and get it to work.
and backup.... backup... backup.... cause its on... N... A... T... E... warren to tha G.

So, I'm getting majorly frustrated with this hot-swap routine. (I know, I know, I shouldn't be so cheap and just go out and buy a mod chip....). I've tried nearly every method described in this thread to get access to the HDD after letting it sit till the screensaver came on:
- connecting to PC when PC power is off - no go, no access via XLinux or Windows. XLinux give me a ton of errors and HDD_driver won't recognize the drive even after I try the hardware scan.
- the same happens when I try plugging in the drive before the bios IDE scan.
- I've also tried pausing just before Windows begins to load - no go.
- I've even tried connecting it when Windows has completely loaded. nothing.
I'd really appreciate it if someone could offer me some suggestions...
Thanks everyone.
BTW, I've updated the dashboard as well through Splinter Cell.
Rage
I managed to get the hotswap working (yay), BUT theres one problem: I keep that invalid filename length error or somethin like that, click ok a few times and it shuts the program off. I backed up my HDD using it tho, tried that hexediting the FATX parts or whatever, restored that hacked HDD backup and it was still a no go, kept getting that damn error.
Xlinux? Would use it if I had a goddamn CD Writer about. Life sux, have to wait til i get paid to get a modchip. Ah well.
ok here is my problem
after waitin 10 or so minutes i took the IDE out of the Xbox HD and put the one for IDE2 on my motherboard IN
My computer didn't reconize it
putting the Xbox HD directly to my IDE2 i started both machines up about the same time and my computer reconized it and went on to start Windows XP Pro, I thought everything was going good till i got to the loading screen for XP it just sat there forever....
i don't know why it didn't work either way i figured maybe one of them would have worked... (does this have anything to do with having 2 HDD on IDE1) and no nothing else is on IDE2

Try the Pause before hard drive detection and Pause after detection on the bios screen.

you need to read all the posts.
you can not turn both machines on at the same time like that. the xbox hard drive has to be "unlocked." The reason why XP just sits there and never loads is because the xbox hard drive is LOCKED.
I was able to get EvoX to boot once...worked great until I rebooted the system. It then went back to its normal boot-reset-boot-reset-boot-reset-etcetcetc.
I shoved a game into it, unlocked the HD, and read evox.ini -- it was all garbled once, and another time everything except for the Original Skin info had been deleted from it.
Somehow evox.ini is getting tampered with while on the system and then causing the reset-loop problems.
well now that i finally unlocked my HD it has got messed up before i even have tried to change anything, i get the "your xbox requires service" message
and on HDD Driver i get that stupid "wrong file size" error i went in hex to change the FATX to .... but there was only 2, which i changed and i still get that error, i have no idea what to do now
Guys,
Just wanted to share my experience of performing the HDD swap trick on my brand new v1.3 (K 5101) which didnt go as smoothly as I had hoped, but I didnt end up breaking anything
First of all, thanks must go out to the users on this forum, and the people on the various IRC channels for helping me up to this point. Anyway here goes:
I wanted to do the HDD hot-swap trick and attempt the font exploit, but opted to try out the Audio exploit first as it doesnt seem to do any real damage to your xbox, except maybe screw up your Audio CD playing abilities
I started off by carefully removing the lid of the Xbox, and the hard disk itself. I needed to do this so my power and IDE cables would reach from my PC (with plenty of room to spare!).
I then disconnected the SECONDARY ide cable from my PCs other devices (a DVD ROM and a CD burner) and left the cable hanging just near the xbox HDD. I also disconnected the power connector from the xbox HDD and connected the PCs power connector to the xbox HDD (I thought this was a safer option).
I then powered up the PC and pressed 'Pause-Break' when it started its memory test. I then powered up the XBOX and it booted successfully without any disc in the drive to the dashboard screen.
Being very careful, I disconnected the IDE cable from the xbox HDD and connected the PC's ide cable to it. I then hit spacebar on my PC and the POST continued.
My BIOS detected both my standard HDD that was already in my PC (on the PRIMARY ide channel), and the 10GB xbox hdd (on the SECONDARY channel) as a Master. WindowsXP was waiting at the logon prompt about 15 seconds later. Woohoo I even got the 'Found new hardware: STxxxxx message
A quick check of My Computer did NOT show the xbox HDD (because Windows doesnt recognise the FATX file system)
My next problem was getting the HDDdriver app to work. My PC is WindowsXP + SP1a but the program would not start (missing a heap of DLLs). So using google i managed to find copies of all these DLLs fairly quickly. HDDdriver was then happy to open up.
My first thing was to do a complete backup of the xbox HDD, which took about 30 minutes and seemed to work ok.
Following the instructions from the Audio exploit readme file, I uploaded the 'linux.xbe' file into the root of my 'User Saves' folder. On trying to upload the 'ST.DB' file to the TDATAfffe0000music folder, HDDdriver would crash with some weird error message. I tried this at least a dozen times but without success. There was no existing ST.DB file on my xbox HDD. I also tried renaming the file before uploading it to things like (test.xbe, test.db, etc). None of these methods worked.
Thinking I should probably but things back the way they were, I removed the 'linux.xbe' file from the xbox HDD and did a restart of the windows PC (I didnt want it to spin down the HDD). Again, at the BIOS prompt I used Pause-Break to pause it, and at this point I swapped the IDE cables back again (so the xbox HDD was now connected to the xbox). Please note that up to now, I had not powered down my xbox.
Next I switched off the xbox, and then the PC. I replaced the power cable to the xbox HDD with the xbox's own power cable and turned on my xbox.
It booted to the dash fine, so I am guessing I didnt do any damage.
---EDIT---
I have now been able to transfer the files across using the Xlinux.iso from the 'usual places'. I copied the files from the Audio Exploit as explained in the guide, but when I try the 'copy CD' trick, the Xbox sits there for a while, then displays 'Unable to copy soundtrack, their may not be enough free space on your hard disk'. Going back to check the 'Memory' screen shows that i have 50,000 free blocks!
If I HDD swap again and delete the 'ST.DB' from TDATA, the xbox boots up fine once again, and I am able to rip CDs.
i have read everything in this whole thread at least 5 times, but i cant find the awnswer for my problem. I did the hotswap with my v1.1 xbox... worked great. Now i am try-ing to do the same with my friends xbox he has v1.0 very old one, but when i put his hdd in my computer the computer freezes. As i said it does work with my xbox but doesnt work with my friend's.. Dont understand why :S
i tried all posible solutions i found here, like pause computer while booting before it detects ide drives and stuff..
[edit]
ok now i know what the problem seems to be. i dont think opening the xbox and waiting for 10 minutes unlocks the hdd so that my pc can see it.. So are there other ways to unlock it?
[edit]
hey guys Noobie to the No modchip exploits. But I have been sucessful so far with the HDD swap. My problem lies in so many people and Info files tell me too many conflicting things. im trying to do the No mod chip using the Complex Loader 1.10 I followed the instructions that came with it exactly and what i end up with is my xbox constantly booting to the regular dashboard for a split secound before rebooting itself. and it does it over and over. I reloaded my original HD image( before any mods ) So i can try a diffrent exploit other then the Complex Loader. I tried the Free-x Evox using the bert and ernie reloaded files. Bert.xtf and erni.xtf i followed the nfo that comes with it exactly. My Kernel and dashboard all match what the info files require. i think i am doing something wrong as most of these tell me i need to copy a folder of some sort. Complex said i should copy !Loader folder and its contents, and Pheonix tells me to copy Skin folder and its contents. I'm using HDD_Driver to move files to my Xbox HDD, from what i seem to notice is that there is no way to make a folder using HDD Driver. So i think this is why im getting some error. I have been working at this for 17 hrs now. All i need to know is what files i need to move over, do i need to rename them. do i need to flash a bios or something ( i dont think i do ). and how do i put folders on my xbox hd using HDD driver. Any help on this will be more then welcome. ( oh yea i read ever post on the forum related to this HDD Hot Swap and it help a lot to get me to this point i feel im 90% done on my road to sucess with this mod. That last 10% is greatly needed.
****Attention*** to anyone still stuck at the point of not getting HDD Driver to reconize that your xbox HD is attached to your pc, Just use the pause / break boot trick. power up your pc with out the Xbox Hd attached to it. then after your pc checks for all the Drives hit the pause / break key then power up your xbox, let the xbox load to to the dashboard, ( if you dont have a tv connected to it just wait 20 secounds untill you hear the hdd stop reading ( the weird gritting sound it makes ) then Quickly .. i mean " Quickly " pull the IDE out of the back of your xbox HDD ( becareful not to bang up the HD while trying to Yank the IDE out .. dont be rough just Quick ( tip** try pulling out the ide cable just a bit so its barely making full connection before you power on your xbox, makes pulling it out fast a littler easier **) As soon as you pull out the IDE cable from your xbox HDD plug in the free end of the IDE cable from your PC into the Xbox HDD ( ** don't fumble around here plug the IDE directly in as quick as you can.. *** Becarful guys dont bend your pins ** after the IDE is connected hit the enter key on your PC keyboard.. now windows should load like normal.. ( NOT Super slow.. NOTE: IF windows take like 4 times longer then normal to load when your Xbox HDD is connected. that means you didnt do the Swap corect. You took to long pulling out the IDE and the XBOX HDD has locked itself again. you need to restart over again. when windows load.. if you did it right your HDD_Driver should now see your Xbox HD. *** Please use the Super Excllent Tut on this form for detailed instructions on how to do the whole process. This is just my minor help for why mine didnt work when i folowed the tut exactly. and as you can see im still having some problems loading the Exploit now. so hope this helps get you to the point i'm at. ( again this was for people who couldnt get the Hdd driver to see their Xbox HDD.
Ok
I got 2 xboxs here and this is the Prob
BoX A:/1.1- its modded -WITH CHIP- etc running Evo-X etc FINE
BoX B:/1.0- However WAS modded, The chip HAS been removed and its still got Evo-X etc on the unlocked ADDED HDD, NOW i Wanna use that in my PC, the PC will boot etc with the drive in as its Unlocked, but COZ its got Evo-X already ON there (EvoXDash.xbe)and Still retains MS DASH (xboxDash.xbe) I get the Error, it will NOT boot a disk,
BUT in xbox A thaT HDD is FINE
Now i still got the original Locked HDD 4 BoX B, but it screwed up while copying mxm dashboard on so i NOW get on EVERY bootup Flashing Red and Green light Serious prob with Xbox, contact M$ Error, and it wont even boot a disk
I got ALL the C: AS NEEDED for the Exploit ON my PC already
But will the HDD STILL unlock without a dash, or anything Booting ?, and can i HOT-SWAP into my MODDED box and use config magic or something to Unlock it ?, then Rebuild the HDD from scratch using something like Slayers 2.1, or FTP ALL my (ExPLOIT C:) from PC into BoX A with the HOT-SWAPPED B drive in it with the Readily laid out Exploit on my PC ?
If that worked ?!?!?
Then is it just the case of solder the Bridge in B, and re-fit HDD into the un-modded boX ?
I tried to read as much of this as possible
But because its all getting a bit long now, and i got a modded boX around, i am maybe thinking that it could be done a little easier ? Just wondering,
Any Help MUCH appreciated and i wanna see the Exploit doing its thing LoL
Peace and Happy Hacking ! ! ! ! !
Hey, iv been reading up on this topic and found it very interesting, but after reading the guide over and over, i still got a few questions.
1)Which is the best one to do Audio or Font, Baring in mind i havnt done anything like this before. Also a list of benifits for each method would be great
2)also how do i update my Dash to 4920, i currently have 4817 dash and kernel.I do have Splinter Cell, if that helps.
Thanks For Any Help,
BaggerS
OK, well another success story guys.
I have an OLD XBOX bought it a year after they came out, it's version 1.0 with 3944 on the back of the HD. I guess that's the kernel?
I'm also running the original dashboard.
Everything worked like a charm, I found this tutorial yesterday morning and by midnight I was setting up my EvoX IP settings. I might recommend following the original tutorial rather than the revised one, as the new one makes a few shortcuts that might be why people are havong problems.
Basically I plugged my XBOX HD into the PC poswer supply. Then I powered on the box, waited until the screen went dark(5minutes or less) then unplugged the IDE Cable. At this point the XBOX DH will start seeking every 10 seconds, don't worry.
Then I unplugged my CD Rom drives and booted up the PC, just AFTER the drives weer dtected I paused the boot. Plugges in the XBOX HD to the now loose IDE cable and continued booting. I didn't worry about trying to get windows to see the drive, I just opened up HDD Driver.
I was hit with the infinite error thing. SO I made 2 backups, took about 7.5 gigs each, then using winHEX I simply edited the 5 FATX entries(**when you search, make sure it's CASE SENSITIVE**, there are many instances of "fatX" but only 5 of "FATX"). I then restored the Cache3 and User partitions using HDD Driver, reopened the program and Voila! I could see my file dir.
I then slammed in the complete contents of Signed_Pheonix_Loader, and B & E reloaded into my system folder. Then renamed the old font files, renamed Audio to "Skin" and ambient music to "PheoniX", and added the last couple files to the "PhoeniX" folder.
LAST STEP! Before disconnecting your harddrive, restore the two partitions that you edited. USe your un-edited backup and restore the User and Cache3 partitions.
DONE and DONE!
ok i am able to do the hot swap (i did it) my PC does detect the xbox HD but i cant unlock it
i accidently deleted the dash and games do boot, only game i have is 007 AUF, how can i do the hot swap w/o the dash and please in steps
If you can run the game then you surely can do the Hot Swap..
Just leave your game in a Menu like options...and wait 10 mins and it will be unlocked
If I let the xbox spin down, after 5 minutes it shuts off. So, uhh, would this be any diffrent than problems other people ran into?
i have my unlock key, how do i use it?? can i just install the HD into my comp and unlock it from there???

Excuse me while I edit...
Point I've labelled;
1. Taking the Xbox HDD right out to use the PC power is pointless and makes no difference in the operation. This is for people new to this kind of thing so, why complicate things even more by doing so?
Also encouraging people not to worry about having the Xbox HDD out of the main unit while it is seeking is a really bad idea. Experience says the less time it spends outside the 'Box, the less risk of the kind of serious damage I warn about occuring. As proven by the case of the person who didn't bother unscrewing their drive.
Incidentally I'm still wondering how you convinced the Xbox to unlock its hard drive before even turning the PC on, since you have the Xbox HDD plugged into the PC for power...
2. This is **PC BIOS SPECIFIC**. As I believe I did point out in the tutorial, there are variations depending on motherboard and bios. This way however, you also encourage more severe risk (quite needlessly to your PC itself as well as your Xbox IDE channels for the record) by hot swapping while the PC *and* Xbox are on. Again the tutorial way is the safest here, unless people want to risk frying their PC hardware as well.
Which at this point I'd now call pointless and idiotic rather than my "shortcut".
3. Yes... I should also have encouraged people to mess around with a hex editor. Can't see that causing too many fatal mistakes. /end_sarcasm.
4. This has very little to do with the specific methods talked about in the tutorials, and there are plenty of others for those ones.
5. Yes... more unnecessary playing around with the Xbox HDD files and the buggy HDD Driver. Naturally a great idea.
I've gone with the safest, easiest, most generally-accepted methods here. People who veer from them tend to have fallen into Bad Things Happening [t.m.]
Maybe that shouldn't be encouraged, hmm..?
actually i think your tutorial sucked and the original one was much better, you should've just let it be. besides, I was just going through the steps of how I did it, not for anyone to follow.
I'm not assuming people are stupid here, I knew nothin at 9am that morning and by 10pm the entire thing was finished. It's not that difficult and a little common sense is all you really need. Nothing i did was idiotic, and as far as restoring the partitions, YOU ARE AN IDIOT. Why would you keep partitions that you had just gone through with a Hex editor? The only reasom to edit the partition was so HD Driver would work, after your done, common sense would dictate you should restore the original un-edited partitions.
from what I've read you haven't even done this exploit, all you've done is go through and BADLY paraphrase what was a good article. For anyone reading this, I would highly recommend following the original tutorial. That's exactly what I did and it worked perfect.
Could it be possible that my xbox just WON'T register with my pc no matter what I do? .. so far, I've gone through three or four methods and the pc won't register my xbox..
I'm getting a error everytime i access the folder in the xbox harddrive :-(
http://home.earthlink.net/~fuzor/sucks.jpg
anyone know what would cause this? or how to fix it.
Ok, just did it. No problems at all. These are the steps I did:
1. Burned XLinux on a cd - YES, XLinux - would never even think about using that windows app (no offence, cudos to the guy trying to make it work) since there *is* a working OS with support for fatx filesystem (read/write/rename/create/edit etc...). Actually, I could not find one single post around the forums where the user has not gotten an error message of some kind. Why not try XLinux, or any other Linux compiled with fatx support?
2. Unzipped/unrared "Bert_is_Cheating_on_Ernie_-_The_Pheonix_Project.rar", edited the IP settings in the evox.ini file to suit my home network (IP: 192.168.0.69, Gateway: 192.168.0.1). Then burned the contents (along with the edited file) to another cd.
3. Opened the xbox, removed the hd tray and hd.
4. Opened my PC, unplugged ALL drives except for my CDROM, which i left on secondary master. Now I had the primary IDE cable hanging out from my case.
5. Booted my PC and pressed DELETE (for my bios) when the memory counter started to get into BIOS settings, to change the boot order/enable boot from CDROM. Saved settings and rebooted again.
6. AFTER drive detection, where only my CDROM was deteced, I pressed pause/break to stall the boot. Also, i opened the CD tray and inserted the XLinux disc.
7. Turned on the XBox without any disc. Oh, don't forget to have the display cable connected into the XBox. You don't have to attach the other end to a screen, but at least my XBox required the plug to be connected (into XBox) to even boot at all.
8. Waited for 12 mins (
) and did the swap, i e detached the XBox IDE cable from the XBox drive and quickly attached my PC primary IDE cable to the XBox drive. Note: during the 12 mins before and for all the time after, I could hear the XBox drive spin/seek every now and then.
9. Pressed SPACE on my PC to continue boot from my CDROM. During XLinux boot the XBox drive was detected and assigned as /dev/hda.
10. Once XLinux was done booting I opened the CD tray and inserted my other CD, with the Erni & Bert stuff.
11. Created a dir where to mount the XBox with:
and mounted the XBox c drive with:
| CODE |
| mount -t fatx /dev/hda0 /xbox |
Then, I mounted my CD with:
| CODE |
| mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdc /cdrom |
Note: the /cdrom dir already existed and was empty, /dev/hdc was my CD on secondary master.
12. Time to copy files!
| CODE |
cd /cdrom/ cp -R * /xbox/ |
to copy all files on the disc, including Skin folder.
13. On the Xbox, I made backups of the old font files (no, I had no fonts dir, both fonts were on the root of C: ):
| CODE |
cd /xbox/ mv "XBox Book.xtf" "XBox Book.xft" mv Xbox.xtf Xbox.xft |
Note that the quotes are needed when file name includes the space sign.
14. Now, time to put bert and snuffleupagus in their place:
| CODE |
mv bert.xtf "XBox Book.xtf" mv snuffleupagus.xtf Xbox.xtf |
15. That's it, now unmount the CD and XBox:
| CODE |
cd / umount /cdrom umount /xbox |
16. Finally turn off the PC and XBox:
to turn of the PC, and the power switch on the XBox for the ... XBox
17. Now detach the PC IDE cable from the XBox drive and attach it to the XBox IDE cable. Put the lid on the XBox, connect the telly cable and network cable and boot up. Voila! First the green X, followed by the Phoenix dashboard...nice!
18. First thing to try was to ftp to the XBox. I used CuteFTP and here is a screenshot:
http://w1.182.telia.com/~u18213241/images/xbox_cdrive.jpg
Actually, I did not encounter ONE single problem during this process. Thanx to XLinux =) Try it please. If you are not comfortable with Linux at all, try to boot it from your CD and just try it a bit without having the XBox around. try some mv, cp, ls, mkdir and mount commands. This is at no risk if you have detached your hard drives from your PC...
Cheers and good luck all!
Oh, I had a v1.0 with a 4034 kernel.
Edit: code typos
does this make it possible to use things like game trainers, media players, and remove macrovision? or does it just change the looks of the dashboard? does anyone know if this does the same thing as the xlinux exploit? they both use the bert and ernie files and seem to be the same but i am not sure. thanks for help.

XLinux is not an exploit. XLinux is a Linux distribution which is able to read/write the XBox's file format (fatx). It is just used to put the font files into the XBox.

Were can I find the original tutorial. I havent seen it. I would like to read it before I give this a try. I have a V 1.0 w/kernel 3944. and it has a bum DVD ROM. I don't want to get it wrong or I might not be able to unlock it if it funks out. I intend to at least piggyback another drive after I get evox going.
OK never mind I found it.
http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?act=ST&f=45&t=73680&hl=
does it matter what the names of the new text files are?
ex: bert.xtf & ernie.xtf
or bert.xtf & snuffulupagus.xtf
or blah.xtf & blah2.xtf
or should i just change the extensions of the old ones and give the new ones the names of the ones in there (Xbox.xtf and Xbox Book.xtf)? thanks for help.

Yes. Usually there should be a .nfo file in the package describing this.
Hi,
i ´ve tried to follow the way explained on the first page - and i´m lost in space
basic stuff, but i have no access to the XBOX-HDD. I was waiting 10 min, 45 min, 2 hours - did the IDE cable change - the drive were detected right as a ST8.... HD in BIOS, then XP (with SP1) loaded and loaded roughly 5 min, but the drive was not shown, not in device manager, not in explorer, nowhere and HDD_Driver creates his nice error message "xbox.. not found on devices 0- 256"
Somebody has an idea what to do ?
As a next step i will try the XLINUX Tutorial from rocketeer, probably it works (but i have to find the xlinux distribution first - pm were to find are welcome, i´m to tired and to fustrated tonight to google for
, thanks
hot swap again, don't be so slow about it. wait till your screensaver comes on, then swap em, quickly. let us know how it goes.
find a dll file

re> no access to the XBOX-HDD.....
i woke up this morning and had a wonderful idea - lets try another IDE cable
and, wonder, it worked, i dont know why, but obviously the "last" connector on the cable is NOK (in PC, i remembered, i used not this connector for CD-ROM due to package reasons), doesnt matter, HDD Driver detected the HD, backup done, ernie&bert copied, pheonixLoader installed, msdash fixed and first test done - it worked fine, not yet for 100% -> after playing a DVD GAME, the box needs 5-6 reboot to load the pheonix, but i will read a little bit, to figure this out or wait for an update
But i dont want to leave without to say - Thanks to the team and the users of this board, really helpful and all information collected in good tutorials, great job !
My next steps with my XBOX are now: run Linux, playing my vacation DIVX´es and try to copy some of my original Games to HDD and play them from there - i dont know, if everything will working, but i will ask for help, if i get problems
Bye
I'm trying to pick the right exploit, I have an original XB 3944 Thomson DVD ,but its not working any more it reads CD's sometime and it tried to start one DVD game in the last two months and froze cleaned it a million times buy now.
I got fed up with M$ when the jerk on the (800) help line laughed at me saying I had to spend like $175 to fix a console I paid $300 for. Should have gotten that extended warranty.
I think I've got the swap thing figured out but I want to make sure I use the right exploit for the older kernel I am thinking of using the "Bert is Cheating on Ernie by The PheoniX Project I read a few success stories for the 3944.
I have been following thing here for a couple of weeks and I've notice that there are a few very experienced individuals here who might help out a noob like me. So if any one has the time Ill be listing.
thankx
i have the same xbox, i used B&E Reloaded works great

I read that B&E Reloaded will only play backups and not make them. Is that what your expirence has been?

My real problem is that the DVD is wacked so from what I have read I will need to flash the BIOS and add a secound DVD to get it going. The Tut said this can be done on a modded XBox so I figured a flashed TSOP would work the same.
i have orderd the xbox limited edition.. and i am planning on hacking it using this tutorial.. but i wonder about one thing.. where do i obtain the bert and ernie files?

no, total BS. I can do everything, FTP, backup games, play games, play video's mp3, stream radio, play all media on my computer, everything, perfectly. I was HDLoader to make backups, so far I've done Madden 2002, Dead to Rights and Star Wars: KOTOR
i've never even had a single non-boot, like people comlain about. seriously i'm starting to think it's a blessing to have the original 3944 bios

if you can't find it now, well you're just being lazy

I've got all the files. I just wasn't sure what to use.
There seems to be a great deal of confusion out there as far as what exploite works with what Kernal/Dash.
Another question,
The dash doesn't really make a differance once the exploite is in place dose it?
I mean it's not being used any more when Evox is up and running. Right or wrong?
Thankx Loads
ok ive been trying this all night ive read all your ideas. i still cant get it to work. i get a bad boot error or summin on both of the pcs i tried this with. and now i get a 07 error so i take it that my hdd is fried eh? so is there anything i can do to fix it or get it working?
Success !!
I Got Evox up and running on the 1.0 using HOT SAWP
Using PBL B&E Reloaded. I'm using the STD. supplied Bios that came with the package.
I dried to get Evox D.6 (expaned to 1M not BFM) to work but no deal. Just get reboot cycling when started with tray open.
I've started to add some apps since I gotten the FTP up and running.
No luck in piggy backing a secound DVD ROM yet. Using a Samsung 616Q Got it for $10.00 @ Office Max after rebate.
I'm going to see what I can do about getting games backed up on the HDD without using the local (Broken) DVD. I've tried HDLoader but the drive can't read the disks :
This stuff is great!!
Thankx for the help
blick domain, with hd driver, how many errors did you get?
Right now I'm trying the font exploit on a 4034 kernel and 4034 dash. I get up to the point where windows sees the hard drive, and hdd driver sees the drive. but all I get is a ton of errors and after all the errors, hdd driver just closes. is tehre something i'm doing wrong or what?
This is the method I use for hotswapping: I turn on both the xbox and my computer. wait a 10 minutes for my xbox hd to spin down, take off the ide cable and plug in the one from the computer. My pc recognizes the hard drive and installs the drivers for it but doesn't show up in my computer. I know that's normal because it's fatx. after my computer sees it, I start up hddriver and it sees the hard drive as physical drive2 and proceeds to give me numerous errors. after all the errors, hddriver simply closes. WHAT THE HELL IS UP WITH THAT?
oh yeah does it matter what type of ide cable you use? right now I have a 33 hooked up to it. the one from my cd-roms
ok i take the box apart i start it up for 5-10 minutes, the drive spins down and i then take it and plug it into one of the IDE cables that my cd-rom was plugged into i then start up windows and it takes longer than normal to boot. i get into windows and i open hdd driver, it says sorry cant find xbox harddrive. do i need to set the xbox hdd to be a slave or master or what? should i try it on the second port on my pcs hdd IDE cable? please help.
Ignore the errors and go straight to "TOOLS" and make two backups.
Windows doesnt have to see the drive. It can't read it any way.
Only HDDriver can read it with a little help from a hex editor.
Read through the forum here there all the help you need.
k got hot swap working made my backup then messed up on transfering the files. now STKD stated to start the xbox from a game and wait for the hdd to be unlocked. now in a game how will i know when a the hdd is unlocked? the only game i have right now is Star Wars:KotOR because all my other games are downloaded. Tell me when does the hdd unlock in KotOR or if there is another game like halo that i can use. i need to know so i can restore my hdd and work on it again. thanks in advance.
The HD is unlocked while the little "MS" logo is displayed under the X. Just swap it then. But any game should work. If you can get the game to come up the HD should be unlocked until you shut down the Xbox.
Morden.
ok well i tried when the little MS logo came on underneathe the X on the xbox start up. that didnt work. ill keep trying.
UPDATE:
Still no success on getting the hot swap to work so i can use my backup file. any ideas?

*wanders in and sees some not exactly factual stuff going down...*
Picture me confused. Can you tell me where exactly I `stated` that, or even mentioned using a game at all. If you mean the trick mentioned under the heading "So you messed it up..." you'll also note the highly telling words "By Tsurani".
Sorry, credit to him where credit's due - I never wrote that.
STKD, im having a few problems...would u mind giving me some help over MSN ???

I have one simple question. What version of x-linux did you use and where did you get the bootable ISO from? I've now tried 3 version, and not one where bootable! (Yeah, I know how to burn a cd.. :-) )
I downloaded from the xbins FTP. I even tried the DyneBolics Linux, but theres no fatx support...
Please help!
/FiX (ILikeX)
IlikeX,
What burning SW are you using. Nero seems to screw up bootable Linux discs every time. I used Roxio and it worked like a charm!
Morden.
-> Mordenkainen
I used Nero v5.5.10.0, but it burned the DyneBolics Linux boot ISO just fine...
But thanks for the input anyways, i'll try another burner software!
What version of Linux do you recommend? (Must be a bootable Linux for the PC with fatx support, and able just 2 run off the CD. )

I left the xbox on for 20mins just to be safe then i unplugged the ide cable and plugged in the one for the pc. started up the comp and it recognized the harddrive in the post and again in windows. tried to run the hdd driver and it cannot find the drive said it searched from physical drive 0 until physical 250 or something like that. I'm new and dont know too much have a good knowledge of computers but not sure what i am doin wrong or what i am missing?

You only really need it left on until the screensaver kicks in, but still... unless you really know what you're doing I'd stay well away from the HDD swap method.
ok theres one thing i dont understand about this.
since ur plugging the xbox hd to the pc's psu , how can you possibly leavethe pc off to do this?
as in,if u boot the xbox with the pcs power supply in it,when the pcs not on,there will be no power....i dont understand this, please clarify.thanks.
HI I have a problem I turn on my xbox and wait 30min and the HDD never spins down am I doing something wrong?
ok guys, read all 16 pages (whew!) and after i get back from renting something to update my dash (no LIVE section there now, 4034/1.0) i'm ready to start ... question though:
the bert cheating on ernie package has bert.xtf and snuffalupagus.xtf, the reloaded has bert and ernie ... do i use the bert and ernie from reloaded, and everything else from cheating, and kill snuffy?
Just like you said, use bert and ernie, kill snuffy and then use the rest of the stuff from cheating...it worked for me.
cool beans, here goes... :x:
got it workin, this tutorial compilation kicks ass ;D
where does evox.ini go?
@spoon486: evox.ini goes in C:
Also, when I installed the exploit I had a problem with my eject LED flashing red while EvoX was running. To fix that all I did was get the "Big Fonts" exploit that was released in July, FTP to my XBox and replace the ernie.xtf and bert.xtf that were on the box with the ones in the new big fonts pack.
Also, I'd recommend setting up the original dash to work as well so that you have access to your game saves etc...
Check out this tutorial http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?act=ST&f=45&t=74036
my evox is working awesome, although i need to reconfigure a lot. But when i run xbmp or try to play a VCD (all i've tried so far, stupid stock HDD...), i get error 21 ... is this because i need to load that pheonix loader thing? Does that fake the signing or something?
Thanks for the reply ragenb, I only just got an Xbox and am new to this, I tried the hotswap today but couldnt get HDD Driver to read my Xbox hdd, the second time I started up my pc and used the pause before hdd drive detection method and waited 25mins instead of 15 for my xbox to unlock, and it worked. The problem though after i came back to see if hdd driver finished backing up my hdd it was still open and the percentage bar had gone, I clicked to close it and my screen went black and my computer restarted, when it loaded up I still had 12.5gig free which is what i had free to begin with, so does that mean there wasnt enough free space to create the backup?
I am running Win2K, I am gonna try again Monday
I just have the stock HDD in my Xbox, and I had about a dozen ripped songs on it as well as game saves from Splinter Cell, and about a half dozen other games and my backup was only about 3 GB.
Tried backing up my hdd today twice, the first backup was 63mb and the second was 16mb, i have no idea why, when i open hdd driver i get one error 'invalid filename size' or something.
ok i need major help here, none of these damn tuts seem to work for me. I have put bert and ernie xtf hacks on and put EvoX on my xbox straight from the .rar file and all i seem to get is a loop and when it seems to load the dash the background is still green.

Hi dudez, i have done this mod with hd hot swap. I make some cool photos, i write an italian tutorial. You can see it here:
http://www.xbox-tribe.com/tutorials.php?tuto=fontexploit
some cool photos:

))
Wow nice toilet paper!:P
It cool that you made some screenshot:D
ok heres my dillema
iturn on my xbox with A/V cable plugged in ,,otherwise the xbox shuts down after a short period of time,, and i also have a controller plugged in.
i have never done anything to my box other than open it up.
- i have the hdd layed out nice and neat and my PC off
- i turn on the xbox and hear the hdd crunching and running
- i go watch tv for 1/2 hr
- i come back and the hdd is still spinning fast and every 2 sec it makes a crunching sound like its doing something so that the drive keeps running.
- i have done this 4 times and still the drive will not "shutdown" or go into "suspend" mode
- ok so i said screw it, i unhooked the hard drive and the xbox dvd starts spinning up...?? it realised that the xbox hdd went missing.
- so i hook it to the SECONDARY IDE cable of my PC, and i boot and get a POST error stating problem with 4th master drive press F4 to enter set up.. ok i do that,, it see's the drive fine,, and my boot order is set correctly,, nothing has changed there.
- so i reboot 4 more times all with the same error and the system will NOT boot into windows.
- by this time the xbox has shut itself off. i did NOT shut it off
anyone ever seen this?
anyone know what in the world might be happening?
as of now the xbox is running,, i have not check it plugged into the tv to verify its on the dashboard but it seemed sound like it booted fine.
ill wait another 1/2 an hour and try again but i can just about guarentee that it aint gunna work
suggestion - maybe turn on the PC and "pause" it,, hook up the xbox drive,, then let it go into windows.... maybe ??
why is the xbox shutting of ? something added to prevent the swap trick ?
also, it boot to evox?? how can it boot to evox without evox being loaded ??
no where in the tutorial does it say anything about copying the evox files over to the xbox hdd.
or since ernie file is 7 megs is THAT evox .. ???
the tutorial is REALLY thurough which is GREATLY appreciated, but it doesnt go into details about what to do after that.
is there more to this than what is stated ??
something that cant be discussed here in the forums ??
if so email me for heavens sake per my email addy in my profile, im dying to get this to work.
WOOHOO i got the hdd recognised and up in windows and all is good so far renamed the original fonts to OLD and added the bert and ernie files.
oh btw i have an intel 875p mobo running SATA drives so that maybe whats jacking with the hdd recognition,, but i ALSO have a Silicon Image IDE RAID card i use for my extra drives and guess what i dumped the xbox drive on that card and BAM ,, she booted right up.
why am i thinking in some tutorial i read somewhere that the bert and ernie files needed to be renamed to the original file names ?? so that the xbox recognised them
also in the root of the system folder there are also font files exactly the same as the ones in the font folder,, are those going to mess it up some how ?
ok so also in the tutorial it says to dump the default.xbe into the folder too ok so where the heck is this default.xbe file,, none of the font zips or rar's ive downloaded have had that file,, so where am i supposed to get it ?
once again i have to ask what is with the default.xbe all i have is an xboxdash.xbe
here is the file structure of my SYSTEM folder
-System
--Xbox Book.xtf
--Xbox.xtf
--xboxdash.xbe
+Audio
-Fonts
--XBox Book.old
--Xbox.old
--bert.xtf
--ernie.xtf
+xboxdashdata.10027100
+xodash
as you can see in the root of the system folder is the xboxdash.xbe
NOWHERE in this tutorial does it state anything about evox or anything,
I HAVE DOWNLOADED ALL 3 FONT EXPLOITS and NONE HAVE THE DEFAULT.XBE FILE
PLEASE SOMEONE EMAIL THIS FILE!! [email protected]
or can i grab one from an evox file ive downloaded??
also what about the evox.ini file,,, what should i do with it or dont i do anything ?
i DO NOT want to unhook my xbox drive from my PC until i have this issue resolved so anyone who can help me out pretty please gimmie an answer.
ok booted up and got the Your XBox needs serviced...
ok its pretty obvious that there is more there than just the bert and ernie... and the default.xbe file which by the way is NOT downloadable thru any of the mod sites...
so which default.xbe file it is i have no idea,, what evox version idid it come from ??
also i have a huge issue with the evox ini file which is NOT listed as being installed and yet in order to run evox you need that file,, correct ??
needs services jesus if the hdd is fried im gunna be so pissed.
oh and windows sees the drive in device manager but hdd drive will not see it!! GGRRRR
To start off, these are the files you're going to need (all are available from the usual sources):
- Bert_is_Cheating_on_Ernie_-_The_Pheonix_Project.rar
- ernie_and_bert_reloaded.tar
- bigfonts25.zip
From Bert_is_Cheating_on_Ernie_-_The_Pheonix_Project.rar you'll need default.xbe (place in C:, root directory), evox.ini (place in root as well) and the Skins folder. There are tutorials earlier in this discussion on how to install the Skins folder using the Audio folder...next use the ernie.xtf and bert.xtf from ernie_and_bert_reloaded.tar, and they're placed in the fonts folder. I had a little trouble with these two files cause my eject light to flash red even though EvoX still worked.
So what I did is FTP'ed to my XBox, and replaced ernie.xtf and bert.xtf with the two from teh bigfonts package and it solved all the problems...hope this helps a bit.
thx for the reply dude but nothing will helop now,, i backed up my hard drive,, 2 backups infact and the fucking thing booted to "Your Xbox need serviced" and now no matter what i do the damn hard drive tool will not see the xbox hard drive,,, the eject blinks red and green ,,, Windows Device Manager see's the drive but thats it,, hd tool wont see it..
so basically the stupid back ups i made are useless.
im sooooooooooooooooooooooo flippin ticked off right now..
i have an extra drive a 60 gig and a 120 gig,,, what can i do,,, what tool is out there that will format this drive and make it work. that way i can just reimage the thing with the factory hdd image backup i made.
I haven't had any experience prepping a new harddrive, although I do know that the tools exist. Check out this tutorial:
http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?act=ST&f=45&t=76808
so then i was right,, if it boots and says xbox needs serviced that the xbox is screwed ?? there is no way to make hd loader see the drive ? so way to recover the hd or load a REAL game disk and make the xbox work ??
Just because you're getting the error 21 doesn't mean that your XBox is screwed. You should still be able to bring it up in Hdd_Loader and restore a backup.
actually i dont get any error number ,,, persay just that it need serviced,, but yes i am thinking the same thing,, but i cant get the hd program to see it,, its in device mgr but the program refuses to see it
any thoughts ?
this maybe gunna get me in trouble for asking this , but i have the sdk ,,, there any tools in that that will help me out ?
I got it to work. finally. I used the bert and ernie files files from http://www.xbox-tribe.com/tutorials.php?tuto=fontexploit and just followed the screenshots in the tutorial, can i rip games to the xbox hdd with the Phoenix Bios Loader V1.3? Thanks for the tutorial with screens gioxxx20
what do you think guys,,, should i go rent a game and see if it will play or should i save my dollars?
i kinda figure it says it needs serviced because for some reason the evox dash isnt loading, and neither is the xbox dash , what sur[rises me is that is something like this happens , as much trouble as MS went thru to protect the xbox from running copies and such (yeah right) that is certain files were corrupt,, then it would restore certain files from lets say a back section of the hd.
since the root of the system folder has the font files in it,, oone would think thatit could simply copy those files over and replace that and the xbox dashboard... but i guess not.
so,,,, my question is this.
since the xbox can NOT load the dashboard,,, will inserting a game cause it to bypass the dashboard and go right into the game,, allowing the hdd to become unlocked thus allowing me to swap it?
or since the dash cant be loaded is that all she wrote... the dash cant load,, the hdd wont unlock.,, there for it cant load a game ? and i cant unlock it to load it into the pc?
something ive failed to mention a while ago is also the naming of the bert and ernie/snuf files,, if you notice,, the default files are named EXACTLY - Xbox.xtf and XBox Book.xtf
now when told to rename the bert and snuffleupagus.xtf files per the bert is cheating on ernie tutorial,, it says rename to Xbox Book.xtf and Xbox.xtf
ok first anf foremost what do you knowtice about the spelling,,, XBox Book is now Xbox Book (the first B should be capitalised).
would this infact throw off the dashboard or is the font hack TOLD to use Xbox Book instead of XBox Book... things can and usually will be case sensative.
i know thats a long shot but i have made 3 copies of my backup image and i am using Fat X plorer to open the image and add and replace the files as per this tutorial Fat Xplorer allows adding of Folders to so you can add the SKIN folder that is included in many of the font files we may download. and i have to assume that the skin folder IS NEEDED in order to make evox run properly.
IS THIS CORRECT?
i am going to try and run linux from a cd most notiable would be the Knopix version of linux from CD, and i will see if i can see the hard drive then.
i have not been able to get a REAL xbox game yet as i dont have the money to rent one or to go buy a XBOX magazine with the demo cd in it.
IS THERE A VERSION OF LINUX THAT WILL AUTO BOOT AND RUN FROM THE CD ON THE XBOX???
and what should i burn it to ? DVD-R or cdr/w ?
im down to a very critical mass here, meaning im gunna explode if i dont get this sucker running..
since the xbox cant load properly the hard drive is NOT unlocking thus hd driver or Fat Xplorer can NOT see the drive.
im posting alot of things and alot of questions,,, mainly cuz im wondering if ANYONE has fudged their hard drive like this (when turning on the xbox the XBOX screen comes on then flashes and goes right to a screen that says "Your XBOX Needs Serviced" in about 5 languages) and what EXACTLY they did to make it work again.
i have tried swapping many mnay times and the drive will NOT be seen by any program in windows,,, device manager see's it and all but thats it,, nothing else.
so pretty please,, anyone have a pretty good idea of what i can do to remedy this ?
THE GODS HAVE SMILED UPON ME!!
ok heres what i did out of TOTAL desparation
1.
inserted Knoppix linux cd into xbox and turned her on
2.
waited about 10 sec so that the cdrom was being read and then swapped the hdd
3.
I already had my pc paused at the screen where my IDE RAID card recognises the drives and hit enter. COOL the drive is seen , it it has been seen everyother time too.
4.
went into windows and before my desktop was even finished loading i ran hd driver. and WHAT DO I SEE!!! it found the xbox hard drive.
5.
i used hd driver and restored my GOOD ORIGINAL backup image.
everything seems ok and now im ready to test the xbox to make sure the msdash loads good and the entire xbox runs fine.
**update
xbox booted fine to the original xbox dashboard,,,
screw this im waiting for my chip to come,,
Is there another HDD Driver program? I cant get the original to work. Problem with dll files. Im using XP pro SP1 with .NET v1.1 installed. I downloaded the dll files it said are missing, and then gave me another error on them. I cant even register either dll file because it says the DLLregister point server entry wasnt found, and that it wadsnt a dll file. Any body know?
sounds like you downloaded the wrong versions of those dll files.
i had to get
MFC42D.dll
MFCO42D.DLL
MSVCIRT.dll
MSVCRT.dll
and it worked for me
i had one copy of MSVCIRT and it was bad or wrong version so i had to download an older version to make it work.
if you want email me and ill email them to you.(the ones that work for me).. just look in my profile for the email.
Thank you for a good guide.
However I am not able to get my box to work. Nothing to do with the guilde, but still.
i have tried five different versions of the fonts. evox, three versions of phoenix (pheonix?) and dayx. The only result from evox and phoenix was a green web before my box reooted, this happened several times until i got "screen of service" with #21 in the left corner. I looked up the number and it doesnt say anything that i can comprehend.
dayx worked in another way i got a black screen sating xbeloader or something, nothing more.
then i read about "signing" files and got a signed pheonix 1.3, and wrote over dayx files.
i enabled debug in the boot.cfg. and did everyting else the install guide said, but back to the same green web.
i have hotswapped my HD like 20 times now, and are starting to feel my luck is running out, it cant be healthy to the HD, after all. Can anyone help me to get at least ftp up and running?
What do i look for when trying to find out what goes wrong? its a pity the hacks dont eve have an errorlog.
my xbox is release 5101
and: everytime i delete a file using hdd_driver, nothing happens or if im unlucky it appends a lot of crap chars after the filename. any ideas?
grateful for any help. hope i have provided enough information.
glad to see im not alone here,,, NOTHING i did worked
i tried every font version out there and a few diff pheonix,, and i even signed the file with the little bat file you can download..
and still nothing,,, it reboots repeatedly..,
i also was getting at one time a red green flashing light,,
the last time i did it i was getting a RED AMBER GREEN flashing light.,. so wtf....!!!???
i have a feeling its quite possible that it will only work on certain models and certain kernels. and dashboards.
my kernel is 3944
but its a referbished xbox with a MFG date of Oct 2002.
who knows,,
i had to reorder my chip cuz the first order didnt go thru and i paid for overnight shipping,, i wish i had done this on mon i would maybe have itby tommorrow..
but hey the VMA awards are on so,,, screw the xbox..
yay! i got it working!
fonts: ernie and bert reloaded
default.xbe from Free-XEvox with date 5/7 2003. no need for signing!
hey man thats AWESOME you got it working,, are you able to play burnt games ? like cdr/w and dvd-r games ?
also do you RENAME bert and ernie or leave the names the same??
any other tips you can give me would be GREAT!
do you have to install evox on the hard drive also ?
or just the fonts and the signed file ?
also what version of xbox you using ? 1 ..1.1 ...1.2 ?
its frustrating to me cuz i dont understand what im doing wrong.
hehe, im able to FTP. and that was my first goal. still i get error 13 or 21 when going from evox menu to apps after a second or so showing green evolutionX screen, but i hope that's fixable through ftp, so i can let my HD rest from all the hazardous swapping lats two days
i didn't rename the font files. just renamed the original ones.
as for evox.
-i installed skins by renaming audio folder, but i dont think its neccesary if you use default skin. after i got ftp i renamed it back and created a new skin folder.
-edited exox.ini to my fitting, ip and such. as i have bios 5101 the standard vaules for RC4 keys there doesnt fit, but i suspect the Free-x makes it able to boot anyway. Again no clue what happens
-I have a bunch of other files like xboxrom.bin, phoenix.raw and evoxdash.xbe from previous installs not sure if they are used. evoxdash.xbe is btw excactly the same size as default.xbe so my guess is they're the same.
then i renamed evoxdash.xbe to msxboxdash.xbe, and screwed up.... After YET another HDD swap, where i inserted the original ms dash, it worked again. To be honest i have no clue of what files evox accesses, and its debug and log functions doesn't seem to work...
no idea of the version of the box, but bios is 5101.
now the new task is to actually load an app!
happy for any help
well i tried it with the files you did as listed in your first post and still getting system needs serviced....
so whatever the deal is obviously this only works with certain xbox's
i gave it one last shot.. oh well ill have my chip nerxt week.
oh and after the hard drive screws up its a motherf@#$er to get it to unlock again,,,
ive tried AT LEAST 2 dozen times and it still wont unlock so i can restore the image... oh well...
even if it wont unlock i dont care i have a 60 gig im gunna throw in it when i get the chip so slayers installer will format the new drive for me and set it up... no big deal.
OK i have a Xbox from Launch, v1.0, unupdated dash. and whenever I unplug the IDE cable from the XB HDD, it sounds like it spins back up or is trying to access something. I suppose it "locks" itself again. Am I doing something Wrong? Perhaps not performing the switch fast enough?
mine does pretty much the same thing,, i can almost tell you with certainty that when it makes that noise,, #1) its only reacting from the shock of you removing the IDE cable #2) that possibly its locking itself again yes... its when it does NOT make that noise that it remains unlocked.#3) i too have a "very close to launch" xbox and NONE of the font hacks are working,, and i mean NONE.
i think we need someone with a rev 1 xbox with an older dashboard who has SUCCESSFULLY done this to come here and help us out... or tell us listen it aint gunna work,, or tell us to try the audio hack,, which btw i have not done yet
| QUOTE (olabri @ Aug 29 2003, 05:16 PM) |

Have you signed all of the xbe files for the programs you're trying to run? Otherwise they will keep giving you errors. You can find the tool for signing xbe's in the downloads section. It's called xbedump.
thankfully, I do not plan on using the font exploit but rather a certain MA exploit that will allow me to install/uninstall the ST.db exploit. I think some of you know which one I am referring to
Perhaps doing the switching faster would solve things, but the problem is that that gives me a window of less than 3 seconds to switch IDE cables. Wow.
"Have you signed all of the xbe files for the programs you're trying to run?"
yet another OOPS did we forget to tell you that you had to do this?
just more pieces of the puzzle falling into place.
gotta remember man people who are doing this are people who cant afford a chip or ,, well dont want one,, or are adventurous,, and the tutorial needs to include the ins and outs of what will make it work,,
things such as the evox ini file,, does it NEED to be there,, but if it IS there what whould and should NOT be on it. things like the command lines for apps and games and the dvd player,,, simply put logically if the ini file points to those directories and those directories do not exsist,, well,, either its going to boot and get error,,, its going to infinite reboot trying to find those locations or its going to flat out fail.
i do believe there is more to this than simply 2 font files and a xbe file,,,
and the same for the swap trick,, the swap trick works at different intervals EVERY TIME! ,, there is NEVER 1 moment in time that it will always work,, walking away and leaving the xbox alone for 10-30 min means nothing,, for after about 10 sec the drive is unlocked,, as the other gentleman stated i believe the unlocking procedure is totally surrounding a window of less than 3 seconds,, for on average within 1-2 seconds of disconnecting the ide cable the drive will "clunk" and lock itself again,,, and the locking, i believe, and please correct me if im wrong,, the locking is part of the ide drive firmware, so to speak.
i have tried for the past hour to get the drive unlocked and RErecognised and its not working, i also have totally unplugged the power from the power cord for 15 min too(roughly) to possible clear any cmos problems... and still i cant get it unlocked,, maybe ill go buy an xbox mag and use the demo cd.
ill get it,, this happened yesterday and i should have left it,, but im stupid like that,, if i believe there is a chance it will work,, ill try it... and well,, it didnt work
using the bert and ernie reloaded and the default.xbe from the signed pheonix loader,, this is what happened
the xbox window came up,, the MS name showed,,, it quickly attempted to load the xbox dashboard and instantly went to the "Your xbox needs serviced screen" and the power button flashing red and green.
end of story.
To get mine to finally unlock is switch it to Master instead of Cable Select on the jumpers. It worked right after I turned the xbox on and hooked it up to my computers IDE cable.
I will try setting it to master next
thanks
One question though, I am trying to use that error 12 thing, I unplugged the DVD drive's IDE cable and powered on the Xbox, the "Your Xbox requires service, Please call Xbox Customer Support" message pops up, but afterwards when I try the swap trick, the HDD still seems locked.
the hard drive being locked or unlocked has nothing to do with the dvd being plugged in ..
try this ,, power on the xbox with a game in it,,, wait until you think that the game would probably be at the menu,, or time it while the box is hooked to your tv .. ok now when that time arrives,, swap the drive,, supposedly the drive is suposed to be unlocked.
for me it has NEVER mattered if i wait 2 sec or 2 hours ,, it unlocks when ever it feels like it,, and im talking about pausing the pc after the POST screen during POST and prior to post.
the way its reacting,, as i stated earlier there MUST be a very small window of time from when you unhok it to when you hook it back up .. i also think the the locking procedure is surrounding the hard drive firmware, but i maybe wrong,, which means theoretically that its unlocked almost instantly when the xbox is powered on,, and the if the drive senses or is electronically told that something is wrong,, it locks itself again... but there arte times when if disconnected at the proper time,, and hooked up to your pc,, it should remain unlocked. its that small window from when it stops recieving an electronic signal when you unhook it until it recieves a signal again.,...
other than that.. i keep saying this and none of the guys who have made this work will reply here anymore.. but i am getting the itchy feeling that this will ONLY work with certain xbox's running certain bios's if they dont,, well it aint gunna work.
and since i know of NO way to flash your xbox bios with possibly a newer one,, well... you get the idea.
all in all it was worth a shot.. but my chip should be here next week, im done taking risks,,, it took forever to be able to afford the chip,, i cant afford to replace an xbox cuz of some half ass'd hack that dont even work but for a small percentage of those who try it.
Hi Guys
Guess who got this to work
First, I had to rearrange the inside of my computer :/ I did this for safety I suppose, I made my HDD and CDrom Master and Slave on IDE1 channel
I switched the drive from Cable Select to Master
I unplugged the IDE from the DVD drive of the Xbox
I booted it on
I sung half of my favorite song ever ( Which Is Kelis - Get along with you )
I booted my computer and after about a second hit pause
I put the Xbox on the IDE2 cable, I was very very slow and careful, so time was NOT a factor. Matter of fact it took me about a minute between switching the cables because there was a gash on the plastic of the IDE cable and I wanted to see what caused it and if it would inhibit me from doing this. It didn't
pressed spacebar, windows booted normally for once, and HDD Driver recognized the Xbox! Hurrah!
The ONLY problem I have is getting the damn driver.exe to work without crashing when I click on something on the left side. Darnit.

| Have you signed all of the xbe files for the programs you're trying to run? Otherwise they will keep giving you errors. You can find the tool for signing xbe's in the downloads section. It's called xbedump. |
If the programs i try to run is compiled with the xbox dev kit, why should there be a need to sign them? And why does my original dashboard fault as well, that should already be properly signed (my guess to the latter is that since the fonts it tries to run is bert and ernie, but still.)
I dont dare edit the original dahsfile because i don't date to hotswap HD another time.
but ill check on signing, and try it.
[edit]
This is a windows version of xbedump i slightly modified to recalculate the xbe signature of any xbe file to use with the dayX font exploit.
This is the only version i found, hope it work for my box that uses the bernt & ernie exploit

| Perhaps doing the switching faster would solve things, but the problem is that that gives me a window of less than 3 seconds to switch IDE cables. Wow. |
my pc bios is old and i didn't have the "pause" function, what i did was to go in setup and set memory to do a parity/ecc check, that way i had quite good time while it checked memory.
attaching it before it was turned on made it lock again.
a good check (at least for my pc) to see if the drive is unlocked, is that the XP progress bar stopped for a second or so after doing the first round. with unlocked HD it went on and on for a LOOONG time.

right pane of HDD-driver does NOT work at all. so the only way to operate is to ONLY use right-clicks on the left pane, that way it wont try to load the right pane.
furthermore it always chrashes when you rename something, but with patience and lots of restarts it should work.
maybe if the author of it dont care to continue developing it, he can release the code, so we can fix the bugs?
damn, how am I supposed to move this directory to My xbox then?
this pisses me off to no end
go grqab Fat X-Plorer it allows to to create directories add delete files and it dont crash like hd driver.
hd driver is ONLY good for restoring and saving your hard drive image.
Fat X-Plorer will also allow you to read the saved image you have.., so if you made multiple copies of your original back up image you can then simple load your image and then add all the files that way , and then use hd driver and restore the image.
in order for hd driver to NOT give you all the errors when clicking in the left window,, you MUST click the plus signs next to the directories. never simply LEFT click or it will error every time, then right click the file you want to rename or delete
again Fat X-Plorer for errorless adding removing of files and folders, and reading of back up images
hd driver for renaming files and restoring back up images or making a back up.
and you got it to work,,, dont sound like it,, all you did was unlock the drive... thats only asmall portion of the battle,,, now rename your fonts and load in the bert and ernie and default.xbe and then load it back to your xbox,,,, , that will tell you if you got it to work.
im tempted to try the audio hack and see if that works but frankly i already pulled the end off one of my 80 pin ide cables and destroyed it when swapping,,, i dont need to ruin another.. so screw it.
I cant be bothered with that bert and ernie crap. I left that all behind with Sesame Street
No offense anyone.
FatXplorer just opens and exits as soon as it detects my drive. I actualy used Fat-X-Plorer before HDD driver
HOLY SHIT!!!
its friggin working!!!
OMFG i dont friggin believe it!!!
ok but i got problems.... probably minor and something that i am missing or misunderstanding..
1)
Play DVD Game makes the dashboard switch to "Your system needs Serviced" with a DVD-R game,, 2 games to be exact. and also the slayers Auto installer disk
Im going to burn a CDr-W game and see what happens.
but is there something i need to do,, or does this hack NOT allow burnt games to be played.
2)
When FTP;ing to my xbox, which is ALOT SLOWER than the XBOX Shell extensions with the XDK tools.
The D drive is a Mirror of my C drive. i thought the D drive was the DVD. ??!?!
3)
NONE of the drives listed show my dvd or anything in the dvd drive. WHY?
what am i doing wrong fellas ?? im so flippin stoked i got it working but i cant do anything but FTP ..
WHY
***UPDATE
ok transfered over a few games to the hard drive. and an app
NOTHING WORKS!!!
all it does is either pull the dvd tray in and search for a disk ,, or if the tray is in already it searches for a disk,, and then goes back to the "System needs serviced" screen.
i did a bit of searching and found that EACH default.xbe file needs to be patched with the XBE patcher so it DOES NOT search for media when starting the game..
well i did that,, and still nothing...
HDD loader dont work(ON the xbox),,,Games dont work. nothing works... play games dont work...... and you cant play copied games i assume,, infact
CAN ANYONE SAY THEY ARE ACTUALLY PLAYING GAMES OFF THE HARD DRIVE WITH THIS MOD??
and if so did you have to patch the default.xbe of every game ,, and if so WHICH xbe patcher did you use ?
***UPDATE #2
ok added a few more apps,, and tried a few more games without patching the default.xbe file.. and still all it does is go to the System needs serviced screen
this OBVIOUSLY is something that is the fault of the exploit,, if EVERY SINGLE GAME APP AND EMU i try does nothing but go to the error screen.... then its pretty obvious something is missing in the exploit,, or once again something is missing from the tutorial.
is the pheonix loader exploit also needed???
all i can do is FTP, and click thru the Evox menu. nothing else is possible it ALWAYS crashes.
the exploit is attempting to use somefile that is wrong or bad,,, now which one it is ??,,, i have no clue.,. but is ANYBODY has actually gotten this to work so they can play games and apps,, id VERY MUCH appreciate a reply including what else they added to the hard drive to make it work.

I am playing games off my hd fine.
1st- You need to put apps in ; e:apps ; Lets say its xbmp, you put it in e:appsxbmp .
Your problem is with games so, e:games . Than you have to edit evox.ini . Edit evox.ini in your ftp program.
Where it says games replace it with this (game names are examples, so change for whatever name you want them) :
Section "Games"
{
Item "Nascar Thunder 2002","e:gamesnascarthunder2002default.xbe"
Item "Test Drive Off Road Wide Open","e:gamestest drivedefault.xbe"
SortAll
}
Than for every game you have, you have to xbedump them il tell you how.
1- Open dos prompt under windows (in windows xp, start, run , write cmd press enter)
2- Now you need xbedump extracted to c: . (write cd in the dos prompt if you are in a folder other than the root c:)
3- Take the default.xbe of the game you want, put it in c: .
4- In the dos window write : xbedump default.xbe -font
5- Delete the default.xbe in your c: directory, and than rename out.xbe to default.xbe.
6- FTP the default.xbe to the folder of the game.
I think you have to xbedump the files only if you have bigfonts. Because it gives error 21 if you try to start the game or program because thy are not signed. But there are some other fonts that you dont need to do this.
If you have any other problems ask me i can help you solve them.
ok hows this look?

i also knowtice that i have the standard fonts in the ROOT of my C drive and ALSO in my fonts folder,,, i know since bert and ernie are already working putting them in the ROOT of the C drive is probably going to fuck this up,, but,,, i have to ask..
if i put bert and ernie in the root of the c drive,, will this actually work ?
ok im trying to xbedump but ive already done this,, i just didnt have the evoxini set up ,,, ok so the evox is set up,, now i just tried to sign the default,.xbe for ATV power quad 2 and this is what i got.

yeah thats what mine looks like pretty much,, it just isnt necessary to paste the WHOLE ini file,, the only thing importnat at this point is the game apps and emu lines,,
why dont you have any slash marks ????? you have
Item "Nascar Thunder 2002","e:gamesnascarthunder2002default.xbe"
it SHOULD be
Item "Nascar Thunder 2002","e:/games/nascarthunder2002/default.xbe"
why ???
ok i got Cap vs SNK 2 EO working abd kawaks,, lol well kind of,, i guess i needed to alter the kawaks ini to show the true location of the roms,, cuz the program starts and it shows no roms,, lol i have over a gig of roms,,,,,
and ATV power quad 2 wont run,,,
so,,, so far its trying to work,,, but just need to figure out why ATV power quad wont run,.,, wierd..
The board strips \'s. In order to show them you have to put two. As in \\ to show \. Thats why there are no backslashes in the ini he posted.
Morden.
ok im patching more files and apps,,, some games and apps patch good other fail,, and its always the header size that fails during the patch....
anyone know why this is.. ???
funny thing is,, seems like my japanese games are patching good and the usa games SO FAR are the ones failing the patch... i think.. could be PAL games.... not sure as of yet...
all i know is the only thing failing is the header size
OK, I made a REAL mess of doing this (long story), but I was at the point where I couldn't boot to the dash and the 007 save on the HD was corrupt, tried connecting to the PC using HDDdriver, but it didn't work (couldn't find the drive
).
But I rescued using this method :-
turn on the fucked xbox and boot 007, start a game and pause
With 2nd (chipped) xbox turn on and load boxplorer.
swap IDE cables so that the HDD from the knackered xbox is connected to the chipped xbox, making sure you don't power down the drive in the fucked xbox
Refresh the view in Boxplorer.
Fix drive.
Swap back and reset!
Hopefully this will help someone else in the same predicament. I was seriously worried I had unrecoverably fucked up the xbox, but this fix worked fine (amazingly, considering the 2 harddrives were completely different sizes!), the fix on the first page didn't work for me at all
well, this is really fucking wierd. Last night I tried to do the swap thing and I couldnt get my pc to recognize the drive. So tonight I put in my 100gb and booted to the bios setts. It would read that so I swapped it out (after waiting only 3 or 4 min w/ the xbox powered on)with the xbox hdd and then it read that as 8gb. So then I rebooted and it went windows (I was damn happy). I got hdd driver working and it found the hdd. but ANY time I tried to open a folder it would give some c++ debug error and no matter what i did (abort, retry, ignore) the program would close down. So i thought since I left it on only 3 min it might not be unlocked so I tried this method again but waited on the xbox screensave to come on BEFORE i switched drives. As soon as I unplug the xbox IDE cable I can hear the xbox hdd start to spin again (which I figured might be why this wont work) . SO when I did it this time, the bios wouldnt read it again upon reboot and it takes a few days to boot to windows and then device manager takes forever to install it and hdd driver cant find it (suggesting its locked).
SOO
It worked after 3 min of xbox power but not after 6 or so. Even when it worked I got the c++ debug error in hdd driver and I dont know what to do. Any suggestions?
as myself and others have stated,,, several times thru this discussion
DO NOT CLICK THE FOLDER CLICK THE PLUS SIGN NEXT TO THE FOLDER OR YOU WILL GET THE ERROR MESSAGE EVERY TIME
you can RIGHT click a folder or file and choose properties (for renaming) or delete or whatever
BUT if you want to see whats inside a folder you MUST click the plus sign next to it... or you get an error and the prog crashes.
go find a copy of Fat X-Plorer,,, it wont crash when you browse and you can do more with it..
hd driver is only really good for restoring and backing up of the drive,, and 1 other thing,, lol crap i cant remember what it is...... oh,, renaming files.. i think.. lol
i use both.. just easier that way.. less of a headache.

Lestat, since i guess you are like me, and dont get std dash to work you need to fix the following in evox.ini:
DVDPlayer = "f:appsdvdx2default.xbe"
AudioPlayer = "c:xboxdash.xbe"
MSDashBoard = "c:xboxdash.xbe"
these must point to an existing non msdashboard app. I use xbmp for all but dvd which is the same as here.
well the font hack is working fine for me,,, FINALLY
now my problem is find which one of my spare hard drives supports locking/unlocking.
i have a QUANTUM FIREBALLP AS60.0 that live info says Locking: Not Locked, Frozen which i THOUGHT meant supports locking but its not locked,, because my other hard drive it sees says Locking: NOT SUPPORTED
and when im in dos and use hdunlock/hdlock it takes the password but the drive is still unlocked and wont boot the xbox..
unlockx says LOCKING NOT SUPPORTED. BUT it too tkes the password and says the drive is locked...
BUT again it will NOT boot the xbox,, and if i power off my PC then turn it on (which should relock the drive if it wAS unlocked) and boot into windows.,., hd driver sees the drive right away .. which means its unlocked..
so my conclusion is that the drive does not support locking,, which pisses me off....
and NOW im finding out that MANY games dont support the font hack,, when you try and sign the default.xbe,,, it fails,, and the will not play from the hard drive.
when it passes,,, it plays fine from the xbox,
this also includes trying to play them from the dvd player,, if signing fails,, the game will not play.
soooooooooooo
im trying now to use the signed pheonix bios loader ,,, but its wont run,, so ,, who knows,,
i have already ordered a chip but i dont like waiting around,, but i guess ill have to... if i want to play all my games.
i just hope the Chameleon 1.3 chip supports unlocked hard drives, otherwise im up shit creek.. i got a 120 gig drive,, but its full and i have no place to put all that stuff. ggrrrrr.

You have to use PBL as people have already said. Then you don't sign anything.
As far as the drive reporting as Frozen, I believe this means it is a lockable drive but has the F bit turned on. I'm not sure, but I think HDUnlock can turn this bit off. Unloackable drives show up as "not lockable" not "frozen".
Morden.
all the games i have tried have worked fine, marvel vs capcom 2 gives me a black screen tho, it used to work :~{
Hello,
I get everything up until it says
"When you want to run Linux, just boot the Xbox with an Audio CD inserted, and once the CD plays slowly press the following 8 keys"
Does this mean linux must already be installed?
Or can i use this exploit to install linux off a cd... (because this is what i pressumed untill i read the tut for the 10th time whilst d/l an xbox linux distro)
Cheers....
, heres how i did it.
ok so u get your bios to detect the hd and windows shows the hd in sys properties, but hdd_driver cant find the drive.
ok boot up windows once in there boot up your xbox, give the hd a min or so then hot swap it, be quick and do not let the power connection to the xbox hd get messed with or your gona fry the hd.
now go to add hardware and add the disc now start up hdd_driver and you should get a great thumbs up, found xbox hd.
just to add a few things, i did this with the xbox hd set to master, and had already done a hot swap at boot, then once in windows did another hot swap as explained above. I belive that the hot swap at boot is proberly not required though. You may also be able to give the disc some time to spin down before hot swaping but agian i'm not to sure, i will have a little more of a play around and post more info if any one is interested.
hi,
after trying the swap technique to install audio/font hack (that didn't work btw, coz of dash 2?)
i've tryied to restore the old hdd (backed up w. hdd_driver) but i can't get into dashboard anymore
says error 13 or error 21 (with a game in the drive)
when i try to run unlockx, my bios won't let be even boot floppy and asks for hdd passwd before
attempting to boot the floppy; any ideas ?
how do i install a new drive without havin' access to this *** drive ?
thx
Ok, the thing Im unclear on is how far does this tutorial get you? Like what will you have when your done. What I am aiming for is the option to install linux apps and run some other things as well as get the ftp server between the PC and XBOX while being able to play games.
So with the Font exploit, the xbox will no longer play games?
The XBox will still of course be able to play games. This exploit just gives you the freedom to install other software that normally only a mod chip would provide you the freedom to do.

The `Noob` Tutorial on Using The Font/Audio Exploits With The Hard Drive Swap Trick (Or "The Complete Idiots Guide to Setting Up an Exploit`"...) `Co-written` By Tsurani & STKD.
Things used/needed: A PC running either Windows 2000 with .NET installed, or Windows XP with SP1 or .NET installed. This is a recommendation, HDD Driver may still fail to work. The font exploit - contains the fonts and a default.xbe etc.. OR the audio exploit. (See *** sections later on) A new dashboard (YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO USE A NON UPDATED ONE... I'M NOT SURE) the program called HDD_DRIVER.zip (its on the console section of www.megagames.com) Please note there is NO alternative to HDD Driver as of.
Version-XBOX V1.1 DASH 4920 (you can get this dash by updating with a xbox live enabled game) Kernel 4817
I'm pretty sure this exploit should work with ALL xbox's but just to be sure update your dashboard via Xbox Live at least. Try without doing so at your own risk. No information currently available on what versions the audio exploit runs on, should work on all that meet above conditions. Note: It is very important to be running either Win2K *with .NET installed* or XP with SP1 or .NET so that HDD Driver works... possibly Windows Server2K3 may work also but I'm far too lazy to find out. May test eventually IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR BEGINNERS - The audio exploit is FAR safer and easier to try, as you will still be able to use your Xbox for games, access the normal dashboard etc. See the readme.txt for more information on it. Font exploit is only recommended if you are 100% sure you know what to do afterwards to get things running.
Whatever you try; Things DO go wrong with these exploits and especially the swap trick sometimes, and not all problems are easily solved.
It is also a good idea to update your MS Visual runtime files with the latest version located at www.M$.com Note: This should not happen if you have WinXP with SP1/.NET or Win2K with .NET components installed afaik.
6. BACK THE ENTIRE XBOX HARD DRIVE UP NOW! Go into the "tools" menu of HDD Driver and click Backup HDD. Do NOT skip this step unless you want to risk ruining your Xbox permanently. <<<<THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!>>>>> If you dont do this you may be very sorry later on if something goes wrong. Make sure you have at least 11-12GB's on your normal Windows hard drive for this. Ok, proceed with the backup (this takes about 30-45 mins, may depend on your PC)
7. 30 minutes later... Ok so now you have a backup. GOOD (wasnt that worth waiting for?) the next thing to do is to extract the font exploit you downloaded previously.
15a***. If you chose the audio exploit; (From the original readme.txt) When you want to run Linux, just boot the Xbox with an Audio CD inserted, and once the CD plays slowly press the following 8 keys : B, Down, A, Right, Right, A, A, A (or go into the "audio cd" menu, choose "copy", then "copy" again and then "new soundtrack", then "ok") * Linux should be running! :-)
EMERGENCY-ONLY SECTION: "So You Messed Up, Didn't You?" (By Tsurani) If you've buggered it up and you can't get back to your normal dashboard dont worry.
Hi, Some Notes.
1) If you are running windows 2003 : Just boot the system without the harddisk, then once booted in wk3, boot your xbox, wait a while, then attach the ide cable to the wk3 machine, go to the top in the tree view of the device manager, right mouse click "scan for hardware changes"
2) Wait a while
IF while is larger then 2 minutes : Your Xbox HDD is still locked, go back to your xbox, and boot it again, and have a little bit more patience
IF Done : You will see the harddisk in the view
Now use anytool you want, to do the job, but remember : Take the one with the less changes!. I used the Font exploit, because that one didn't need to create ANY directory and worked with a 1.0 xbox
-->> don't try to boot your wk3 with an LOCKED harddisk attached to the system , your wk3 installation WILL Hang and reboot itself. <<- (as was tested by me)
I would greatly appreciate the help guys, Thanks!

I even did what some people on the forum said and right-click everything, but I still can't enter that partition and change those files doing that, I just get 4 options "Dump File", "Properties", "Insert File" and "Delete"
|
try "properties"

I believe this is more determined by your PC's BIOS than the OS. Just as some BIOSes doesnt support the "pause" key.
My solution was to ECC check all memory, which gave me enough time to connect the HD while testing the memory.
All these options are extremely risky, and should be done as few times as possible.
anyone did the hot swap on xbox 1.3 with western digital hd?
Anyone know where i can find a backup of the Xbox hd so i can restore mine to the original state? I seem to have corrupted something and would love to fix this 200 dollar foot rest i have sitting here for the past 3 months.
Okay, I pretty much understand this tutorial, except for one thing. When you say "...second IDE cable in your computer..." do you mean you want the XBox hdd to be the slave? That's the only thing I am having trouble understanding. Oh, and where do I get HDD Driver, the XB hadd backup util?
Does any1 know if this exploit works with XBox v1.4?
Thanx in Advance
Do I need a modchip for this?
If not will I be able to copy the games via FTP and play them on a burned dvd-r/rw?
BTW I'm new to xbox hardware but not PC...I'm guessing it will be very easy to understand
tried the hotswap method. I waited 10 mins and plugged my drive into...i didi it while winblows was running. windows picked it up in device manager. I when try to run the HDD_Driver proggy...i lcik on it nothing happens...i run it in dos i type the file name and enter and it goes back to C:HD (where the driver tools is installed) also how can the drive be unlocked as soon as u unplug it it spins and then continues to like evry minute or two while iuts plugged into pc. any ideas???
also...i go have a modded xbox i can use to a a tool....if there is a easier way to get this stuff going i'll do it ( i DO NOT have a memory card)
Any1 already has success with this on Xbox v1.4 and v1.5 ?
Have any of you successfull Xbox Hot Swap Evox/installers throught about doing a video tutorial ??
Is there no alternative to HDD Driver? since im on WinME and if i try to install 2000 or XP it blue screens half way through. I wish someone would update this program, it sounds as buggy as hell.
Will hot swap work on a 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5 XBOX ?
I have got it to work on a 1.0 and 1,1 but can't get it to work on a 1.3 +.
yes hotswap works on 1.3+ (i just modded my v1.5 xbox using hotswap)
