Title: Need Help W/ 1.6 Xbox And Xchip
Post by: Klatu on October 17, 2004, 04:45:00 PM
Ok my brother just purchased a new xbox from best buy.  It has the 1.6 motherboard in it so he bought an x-chip from sb2k and a 250 gig hdd.

I drove over today and wasted a few hours trying to install it....  I am pretty sure the pogo pins are installed properly, the solder wouldn't stick right and then the heat actually melted the plastic rectangle the pogo pins go in so some of the pins slid down but they are still soldered in ok...

I soldered the 4 wires to the pogo pins and then tried soldering the 4 points on the mobo....

How in the heck do you do this?

We couldn't find 30 gauge wire anywhere locally... The smallest wire we could find was the twisted pair inside of network cable.  I tried soldering the ends to the points on the mobo and they wouldn't stick.  The wires kept coming off...

My xbox is a 1.0 and I just used an xbit with the solderless method and it works fine.  I am pretty good at soldering (i did all the led's and misc stuff in my xbox) but I've never had to solder on microscopic points on a mobo...

There has to be a trick, can someone tell me what that trick is?  I went out and purchased a new soldering iron with smaller tips but it still is not working good :(

If someone can direct me to what exactly I need online I will purchase it and try it out... I was reading about flux and whatnot?  That helps?

Yes I know I've been in the scene for a while but I guess I'm still a noob :(  So someone please give me some help.. I removed the wires, left the pogo pins  soldered in, and the xbox is playing fine so that's a good sign so far right?

Thanks for any assistance...  Hopefully I can get some help b/c my bro is gonna swing by next weekend so I can try it again...

Well first you can get 30 gauge wire at radio shack, even comes in three different colors - red, white, blue. Then for sodering its not to bad really, you might want to clean the mobo points with some rubbing alcohal with a que tip. I used a very small pair of needle nose pliers and held the wire so about an 1/8 of and inch from the end and took a razor blade and cut the plastic then pulled off the plastic cover. Then I tinned the wire by melting some soder to you sodering iron and then put it on the wire. then with your needle nose place it on the spot and just barely touch the wire and it will melt and stick. Even with 30 gauge the wire will fit in the hole. I hope that makes some sense on how i explaned it. But thats what i did.

well my brother called me today, he found the 30 gauge wire, he had to drive to a radio shack in another city though.  he also picked up some desoldering braid and the thinnest solder they had...   so hopefully this weekend we'll be able to get er dun wink.gif

and no i didn't solder a wireless adaptor   blink.gif I'm not that noob

i soldered in the pogo pin adaptor like it said to.  the little black plastic piece with all the metal pins sticking in it...  you stick that in the lpc ports and solder em in, then the x-chip just slides onto it for easy mounting biggrin.gif

Pogo pins = push in out .

Header pin is what yoiu mean, the 2 by 6 array of pins, is what you soldered.

So if the plastic was melting iron was too HOT or soldering iron held so long on the pins.

Also, if you want your kynar wire (that's how the 30 gage wire is called) to stick to the contacts when soldering them on, prep the wires by adding a small amount of solder on the tip of the wire so it sticks better on the contact.

Ok I've got everything soldered in now but it's fragging.  I think it's just the bios though since I went over all contacts and resoldered anything loose...

So I'm writing in the evox 1.2 that I got from the xchip folder at xbins ftp....  Do I still need another bios in one of the banks to boot games off the hdd?

The 1.2 will work fine, but I have a question - did you flash the bios first?  I hear if you don't use flash a 1.6 compatible bios (it's the one labeled 1.6 only) FIRST you will frag your box.

No idea if that's true, no idea if that's what happened, but make sure to use the 1.6 bios and cross your fingers.

Evox 1.2 is good.

If the box is fragging and you had left default cromwell bios, you may have caused damage ( you did not read )  It has happened in a few cases where it kills the video on 1.6 motherboard of a non 1.6 bios is loaded on a modchip.  A good way to test if you screwed system is after solding all points do not power on with modchip, power on without and see if xbox boots normal if it doesn't rechek all points, if still does not work remove all wires it don;pt work and no bridges you screwed your xbox.

Chances are you cause no damage, but i would verify every point 2-3 times and also use the alternative D0 under board.
