Title: Can't Install Drivers On Xp Pro
Post by: ashram99 on October 14, 2004, 01:02:00 AM
Can't seem to install the USB Drivers.  Go through the whole new hardware setup, but when I point to the USB Drivers directory, it says that a driver couldn't be found for the device.

I installed everything fine on another machine I have running 2000, but ideally I would like to be able to run it on my XP box.

Anyway suggestions would be great.  Thanks.

What file does it ask for when you point it to the directory?

It doesn't.  Just asks to choose search and installation option and after selecting "Search for the best driver" and pointing to "C:\Program Files\X-Chip\USB Drivers," it does the search then comes back with a screen that says hardware was not installed because it couldn't find the necessary software.  You don't see the file that it's searching for, like I did when I installed it on my 2000 box.

Read the manual, you bypassed one step to get to where you describe.

No, I didn't miss a step.  I did follow the manual exactly.

1) Select Install from a list of specific location (Advanced) and click on Next.
2) Checkmark Include this location in the search, and browse to C:\Program Files\X-Chip\USB Drivers anc click on Next.
3) Select the 1st option and click on Next.

It's step 3 that doesn't show up.  I don't get a list of devices to install, instead it goes to a searching screen and then to a software not found screen.  That's it.

did you install xcontrol to default directory??

also you need to have "C:\Program Files\X-Chip\USB Drivers" for path without quotes

Yes, it's installed in the default directory.  I didn't just type in the path, I got it by browsing.  So, it does exist.  I'm not a total noob.  I do know how to install drivers and software.  As I said, it installed on my 2000 box just fine.

I'm at a loss, since others seem to have installed it on an XP box.  Not sure what I'm missing.

Use My Computer and see if any files in the directory "C:\Program Files\X-Chip\USB Drivers"

Try copying those 2 files to the root of c dir, something like c:\pleasework

and then try installing the driver scalling the c:\pleasework directory.

Tried it.  Still didn't work.  Still can't find the appropriate drivers.

Yes, I'm positive. It's been checked and the directory and files do exist.  As I said, I know how to install drivers and I've successfully done it on my w2k box.  Just having problems with my xp box.

It's not greyed out.  I'm able to select it and I get the proper directory by browsing (not typing it in), so no spelling errors or such.

Nope, sp1a.  Although I don't think that matters, since from other posts, people were able to install the drivers on sp2 boxes, just had problems with the x-control program (until the recent update).

1.06 does not include the .dll you mention that was a patch for flashing bios while inside xbox and powered where it did not disconnect properly.

If the software loadproper on w2k system, something is fishy with the winxp, do you have administrator rights?  BTW it does not matter what SP you use.

Have you tried booting in safemode and removing all USB drivers then restarting and load the xchip software drivers?  SAFEMODE removal allows removing GHOST USB devices.
