I have a couple Xboxes with this problem. Both systems are connected via component cables to an HDTV. Switching cables and TVs do not correct this problem. Neither does copying a dashboard from another xbox without these issues.
I was told in the past that this has to do with the fact that the Xbox was in 4:3 normal video format prior to softmodding the xbox and that its going to boot by default into this format.
My other Xbox clock region defaults to a region other than mine, and I have to change it upon start up for the same reason, I imagine.
My question is, "how do I fix it?"
I think I'm using NDURE/mechassault save game exploit.
Any assistance with this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Happy new year fellow modders!

Try bypassing the virtual eeprom then changing your settings. For Krayzie NDURE you run Krayzie Extras, for Kingroach you run E:\ndts\default.xbe. If you aren't sure which softmod you've got, boot with Frosty's Rescue disc - that also bypasses the virtual eeprom - then select Rescue Applications - Xbox File Manager and run the MS dash to make the changes. In all cases unless you have changed the default settings the LED will be red when the virtual eeprom is bypassed.

I found "Frosty's Rescue disc" on thepiratebay but its listed under games\XBOX360. Is there one for the original Xbox or is this torrent mislabeled?
I'm at my brothers for Christmas so I don't have access to the usual places.
*I HATE PERFORMING MAINTENANCE ON XBOXES IN THE FIELD*
I'm pretty sure its NDURE that I'm using. I ftp'd into the C:\fonts folder but I can't see anything related to Krazie or Ndure. I don't see krayzie extras either but I've been using the same exploit for years, since well, if it aint broke don't fix it it. My exploit runs solely in my C directories so it isn't Kingroach.
Is there anything slayers can do?
Also, my xbox dash is named "Modxboxdash" because of the exploited xboxdash.xbe file that the softmod uses?? So, frosty's rescue disk will probably look for Xboxdash.xbe which will load XBMC if I'm not mistaken.
Knowing that, I might have to go with krazie extras huh?

It's probably mislabelled...... there is no real homebrew for the 360.
Frosty's Rescue disc doesn't rely on anything on the Xbox once the softmod has passed control to the default.xbe on the Frosty's DVD - that's one of the reasons it's so useful.
Krayzie and Kingroach NDURE both have the exploit on C but the dash on E, so if you're certain that your Xbox uses nothing on E then it isn't either of those.
Slayers wouldn't help because it doesn't bypass the virtual eeprom - but if your softmod is really old it might not have one anyway!

cool...
I acquired a copy of Frosty's Rescue Disk 1.0. If I can find a damn DVDr laying around my brothers desk I'm set. I'm still concerned that my MODxboxdash.xbe file will not be accessible by frosty since its renamed. What would you recommend in this case?
I did get Krazie Ndure pack also. But I don't have my MA disk with me. Can I run the rescue portion of the exploit within XBMC if I'm not using the Ndure exploit?
Contents of Ndure rescue folder
-bios.bin
-boot.cfg
-config
-default.xbe
-ux.xbe
I don't see why I cant run the XBE like I would dvd2xbox or HDDloader within Filemanager unless the rescue portion utilizes features found in the original exploit, which is not installed on this xbox as you helped me determine.
Whatever I screw up I could fix at home (3 hour drive), but I would really like to fix this without screwing up.
ohhh... what happens if I don't have a virtual eeprom? I need to install a newer exploit with one?
I never did XBL on the original Xbox, really, so is the virtual eeprom used for this purpose? Otherwise I don't see why it was instituted if there wasn't a need before. Unless its for a stealth mode of some sort.

I tried the krayzie rescue xbe file and the screen went black. I thought maybe the app wouldn't be visable via component cables so I connected via composite and still had a black screen.
-
Again, Frosty's doesn't need any files on the hard drive once the softmod has kicked in.......!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Virtual eeprom is there to prevent noob users from screwing up the system. Even if you don't have one Frosty's will temporarily bypass the existing mod - whatever that is!

ah ha!
I'm about to burn the iso. My brother just formated recently and didn't have his nero installed yet...
With the various versions of Xbox dashboards/motherboards, you would think it would need to run the native xbe in order for you to execute the original dash/settings.
But if Frosty's has a generic dash on the iso that works for all versions, I guess that should circumvent that issue.
Thanks for taking the time and having patience with me regarding this topic.

As suspected...
I booted up the xbox via frosty's rescue disc and I don't see an option for the xbox dashboard. It uses DVD2xbox for its "file manager" which doesn't have a dashboard option that I can see. It has an exit to dashboard link which I boots back to the DVD. (If launched from XBMC it boots back to XBMC.) So I doubt that link is for the Xbox dashboard.
You got me on the right track so I'll pursue this avenue further.

Ah....!
You mean AFTER the disc has booted. Sorry - I was completely misunderstanding your point. Too much Christmas lunch and leftovers has dulled my wits.....
Yes, you will need a stock dash to change the video settings - but surely there must be one on there somewhere, even though it will have been renamed.
Have a search round with Frosty's file manager....
Edit: I'd forgotten how slow dial-up was......!!!

Nevermind got it!
Used dvd2xbox filemanager to boot up my MODxboxdash.xbe. Then made the changes and rebooted. The 16:9 format seems to fixed upon reboot. I shut it down a couple times and seems to be fixed!
Should I even consider upgrading my softmod then since I have a fix for the only issue I had with it?
Thanks.

If it's working and stable and you're happy with it, why bother?
However, if you do decide to upgrade it's really easy - stock C from Slayers, Kingroach 3.1 to build the new softmod file set on top of the stock C, boot with Frosty's and ftp the new softmod over - replace all of the C partition, and copy the additional files onto the E partition.
