Title: ....::::what Would It Take?::::....
Post by: kevbox on January 05, 2004, 12:00:00 PM
I first baught an xbox because dixon's had the better deal, it was only later on I discovered the exploitabilty of the console, and now I love it! Bending the rules is a good feeling, I'm sure you all know what I mean. It's because of this reason I am setting myself a goal, and i hope between us all there is enough know-how to do it.........

I want to be able to swap the retail DVD drives, be it a Phillips, Thomson or a Samsung with a normal PC DVD drive. I've seen the tutorials where to add a second PC DVD drive, but that's not quite what I'm after. At the end of the day, the retails DVD drives are tweaked normal drives, well, how can I tweak a normal PC Drive?

Looking at the xbox setup the IDE is exactly the same. The only obvious difference is the Power input and the whole yellow conector thingy. Where can I find info on that bit? what are the differences between the retail drives and normal PC DVD drives?

Sorrry, if this message has gone on for some time and you are bored to tears with my questions, but it would be great if someone out there had some answers or even shared the same interest.

Yeah, it's all about that yellow conector.. the way I see it is that if there is someone clever enough out there to make a mod chip for a games console then those same clever people would know how to do it.

Anyone know where to find out about that yellow conector?

The drive in question is a pioneer 500M, but I guess the same principles apply?

didn't these guys already do that, or something?

that's a good tutorial. but are we confined to using samsung 615t blah blah blah drives or can we get any good old DVD drive and do it?  I know the obivous thing like the size of the drive must be the same, to actually fit the xbox, but do all DVD drive work on the same principles?

yeah, i've just started messing around with Gentoox, waiting for my USB cable adapter to come though to take full advatage. I got a usb keyboard with two added USB ports (Apple Keyboard).

Yeah that is nuts it says it won't read originall games, what's the point doing it in the first place? and why won't it read originals???

ok, tell me if i'm wrong, but the major player that determines the media compatibility with DVD drives is the actual laser. So.....Can we change the laser for a good one?

no i think linux does require your xbox to be chipped by either a mod chip or the TSOP flash.

Talking of USB adapters, the one that comes with the xecuter 2.3 is useless and I clipped the 2 black wires at put the to LPC #6. Whilst just having the USB adapter in my hand, i put it to the yellow cable for the DVD drive and they are the same type. So maybe I could use this in some kind of way to modify a normal DVD drive

wait a min, got an idea, you know how some dvd drives require software/drivers.  We could wright our own drivers for the xbox that would play xbox games. maybe...

why can't the sony DDU-1612 and Pioneer 500M and Samsung 616T read pressed media (i.e original games and retail DVD's)? Is there a way round this?

this maybe a naive thing of me to say but, surely a couple of wires and a few blobs of solder at various point would do the trick?

great! at least I know one of them works. I've seen a few 616T in the UK going for £25-£30, so I may give it a go. What's the name of the firmware for the original xbox samsung drive?

The firmware on the dvd drive is what controls whether or not a dvd drive will work in the xbox.  The reason the 616 series drives work is because they are almost identical to the xbox version..and can be flashed with the firmware from the xbox drive.  If someone knew how to write and read firmware, they could read the firmware from the xbox drive (essentially) and write a new firmware for virtually any dvd drive on the market.  This has not been done by anyone, and that is why no other drives will read originals, its not that they couldn't, the firmware just isn't telling them how to.  Hopefully someone with knowledge about writing firmware will come onto the scene, and open up the doors to dvd drive replacments.  But for now, we're stuck with the samsung drives.  Hope this information has been valuble, and answered some lingering questions.

that's the drive you need.
it plays just about everything.
you need to flash it with the Samsung 605B firmware for the xbox to read it.
this is a very basic mod and doesn't take any time at all.
It's been done over and over by tons of people.
read the tutorials before assuming that nobody has tried using PC DVD rom drives in their xbox...

heh. kevbox, regarding that usb adapter. i got mine with my 2.3 lite plus for some odd reason (didn't order one). i failed to install the chip on my xbox (which i nuked by accident) but i plugged the USB adapter into an extra inline release cable i had into my new xbox.

however, i have yet to test it out. do u think it will work? i may try it later today with my optical mouse from my PC  blink.gif

I just got my USB female port adapter today, only about 0„58, just linked up my keyboard and mouse and it's working great with linux.
