Running into an oddball problem with a Samsung SD-616T mod. Here is an outline of what I've done so far:
1) Performed Firmware and Hardware mods as specified in This Tutorial.
2) Installed drive in Xbox. Eject button does not eject the drive tray.
I have checked the TRIN and TROUT connections are going to the right place on the Xbox yellow DVD wire, I have also flashed the Samsung drive twice with the 605B BIOS. The drive was working fine before I flashed it and performed the mods.
Troubleshooting went as follows:
Reversed motor polarity back to stock, and tray ejected as soon as power was applied to drive. However, the tray would not retract. This leads me to believe that there is a constant signal being sent to the motor.
I have checked and resoldered the READY, EJECT, TRIN, and TROUT points on the Samsung mobo. This is a "T" drive and does not need the plastic tray modification to lift the laser assembly into place.
If I power down the drive, eject the tray with a paper clip, then pop an Xbox game disc into the drive, upon powerup, the Xbox will read it properly. I have searched the forums for a similar problem, and another fellow was having the same issue. He thinks that he blew an IC on the drive mainboard, but near as I can tell he never resolved his issue.
ESD precautions were followed and I wore a wrist strap at all times. My weller WES50 is ESD safe so I don't think the motor control IC blew. I would appreciate any assistance from someone experienced in modding the SD-616T
EDIT: Update. I just resoldered all the connections again just to make sure. Also Re-Flashed and left the drive in my PC. The drive works perfectly in the PC and I can use a soft-eject command within Windows. I have read that you're not supposed to try the eject button. So I don't know, should I just leave it in my PC since it works there, or attempt it in the Xbox again?

hum, I've never seen this one before. got me completely stumped. You've got the trayout wire running to the trayin pad and visa versa, it will read games fine if finessed in a manner, but yet the drive won't eject... really got me on that one. Unfortunately all I can do is offer my tutorial I am writing if you want to double error check things, and without having the mod job in my hands its almost impossible to tell whats up.

I'm going to try the drive in another Xbox and see if that makes a difference.

alright good luck.

Update. Still having the same problem. The drive will not eject when connected to the Xbox, nor will it eject when the button is pressed.
Again, it works fine in a PC when a soft-eject command is sent, but the button on the front face will not engage the mechanism. Soldering has been triple-checked. Could this be the result of a bad flash of the 605 firmware or what? I'm completely at a loss.
If anyone has modded a bunch of these drives, please let me know what version of the Mediatek software you're using to flash the drive, and if you're flashing thru DOS or Windows.
Cheers.

Connecting to the eject point on the mainboard didn't help, anybody have a solution?

I ALSO have this problem...haven't looked at that damn drive in a few weeks now as it peeved me off right bad. It will not eject. If I use a paperclip, and pull the tray out, put an original in and turn on the xbox, It sucks the tray in on boot and loads/plays the game flawlessly. I tried switching the motor back and reflashing it back to stock and put it in my pc, and it still didn't eject I'm at a loss and have gone over the thing countless times. If anyone has any info on this it would be awesome as my 60 dollar drive is sitting on my table collecting dust.

I had this problem because the xbox case was holding the eject button on the drive down. So I just cut off the button and than it worked fine with the xbox eject button.

i've read in a tutorial somewhere that the pins in the yellow cable for tray in and tray out may need to be reversed
-
it has nothing to do with the tray in and out the wrong way. i have done three of the 616t's.
Drive one. Works every time as it should. it was sold ages ago and is still working fine
Drive two will do nothing when the eject is pressed (xbox eject or front button eject) so it`s reflashed back to 616t and lives in my kids pc. the only way to eject is soft eject from the system.
Drive three is the opposite of this thread. The drive will eject no problems, It will not take the drawer back in so i can not load disks unless i push the drive in and reset the xbox.
In Evox with tray-in on pin 3 and tray-out on pin 4 and the drawer ejected out, the drive reads as open and the lights behave as normal. As it should and the xbox knows the drive tray is open.
In evox with tray-in on pin 4 and tray-out on pin 3 and the drawer ejected open the drive reads as no disk or init. this makes me think that the xbox recons the drive is closed and no disk is present
Tray in and Tray out are only signal lines that let the xbox know the drawer state.
Tray in switch closed tells xbox the drawer is closed. Tray out switch closed tells xbox the drawer is open.
Eject is going to be a signal from xbox that tells the drive to read what switch is closed and to do the opposite action... If tray-out is closed (tray open) the drive must do a close drawer command (motor backwards).. if the tray-in switch is closed then drive must do an open drawer command (motor forward) as the button on the front of the drive and on the xbox is push to make switch and not a seperate open and close switch.
I think the fault has to be down to an ic on the drive. Both my tray in and tray out line signals are working ok. the eject signal seems to work ok as the drive will eject out. and ready signal has to work as once i have manually put the drawer and game in and reset the xbox it loads..
-
continuity between all visible connections is fine.. i have just swapped front boards between 2 different faulty drives and still the same original fault is on each drive
Drive 2 would not eject or take the tray in from the out possition and drive 3 would eject the tray but not take it back in..
The fault has to lie on the main board at the rear of the drive. The tray in and out signals are ok the eject signal and ready signals are ok so it has to be a fault on the drive tray control ic or somewhere/something on the board

i'm not sure now, first 616T drive i did i broke off a solder pad on the back pcb, (tray out) and i just soldered the wires to the front pcb and the drive worked fine.
As for you changing the front pcb's and the original problem still occurs the only thing i could think of is one of the traces was broken on both drives, but you said you already checked for continuity from back pcb connections to front.
So its got me stumped now.

i am now stumped myself... this thing is killing me.. killing me that much i have swapped drive ic chips "ic505" i think it is, on the bottom of the rear pcb.. the one that has the solder in the middle of it.. i traced the motor power tracks back to this chip and thought... Maybe this ic is controlling the drive switching (forward-reverse power polarity). Allas after swapping ic's between drive 2 and drive 3 they both still have the same fault as they had to start with.... the only shit problem i now have is neither of them will reconise ANY disk inserted. they know a disk is inserted but fail to init and read... I now know it`s not the ic thats faulty but some other component. The last possibility is a total board rework with the hotair station, at the mo i can not be arsed to rework it

Lug not is right on the money about tray in and tray out being reversed. I modded about 10 drives and they worked flawlessly and then I updated to a better modding tutorial because the one I was using looked to be drawn in yellow crayon. Will upon testing the new tutorial with the nicely improved graphics I found there was issues, mainly the drive didn't work and it stuck out it's tongue at me when I powered up. It was weird but I traced it to tray in and tray out locations swapped on the new tutorial, so I changed them to the way they were on the crayon drawing and it worked and it's worked for about 200 modded drives now. It's so easy to fix but what if I never got the right tutorial? A total first time modder is lost with this.
I can't explain the reversed connections on the diagrams but I wonder about if pal machines are reversed from ntsc machines on the yellow connector for those functions or what's going on. Anyway reverse them and see.

Both drives refuse to look at disks when flashed with the 605 firmware. they both work fine when flashed back to 616 and used in the pc (with software eject/load prog). i have tried swapping them and it made no difference to either of the 2 trashed drives. with trin and trout reversed the xbox was trying init disks when the tray was out and when the tray was in evox was Ejecting.
The only thing with the last 2 drives was i used the new tute with the nice pic of the yellow connector cable ( swapped trin & trout so he recons in the tute) whereas i used the original tute with the first drive that still works....
From my experience with these drives. DO NOT USE THE FRONT EJECT button on the drive once its connected to the xbox.. use the xbox front eject.. Drive 3 was working as it should. Eject tray out and close tray in untill i attached the yellow drive cable. Then and only then did it go tits up after 2 or 3 open close cycles.
Time to hunt another one.. The last and final drive for me. this time wired with the first tute....

I would be happy to just have a software eject, like the one in windows, but for the xbox, does anyone know of one that will work?
