you can try leaving a LIVE enabled game in the drive when you boot up, see if it gets the update, keep trying a couple of times.

i could not get mine to work either so i downloaded xbconnect and use system link to play the games

It's a common reaction when using crappy installers like sid. If you did any searching you would know the only options are to hotswap or install a chip. Or if you're lucky and it still boots retail games you could try to launch your exploited save and fix it through ftp

completely restore it to stock and then use a more non crappy softmod

hotswapping is not difficult, but is tedious.

there are several good tuts, including my own guide as well.

requires a pc.

it just requires a pc, read some guides about it, you can fix any software related xbox issue.

hotswapping will not work on hardware issues, or incorrectly locked drives, just software issues.
