1) Slayers on softmods is just a terrible way to go about things. It wasn't designed for softmods in the first place so, don't bother with it.
2) You don't need the HD key for any kind of softmod. You can load a gamesave hack, or hotswap the HD and still get into the hard drive. However retrieving the key (Or the EEPROM which the HD key is located in) after you've softmodded is highly recommended!!
3) Use a gamesave hack or hotswap and install your exploit. Boot it, and load up a program called ConfigMagic (you'll need to install this). I'm not %100 but I think this is one of the only ways to grab the EEPROM off a 1.6. Just don't mess with it, you can really fuck over the Xbox.
4) The USB thumb drive might come in handy if you have an old copy of Mechassault, 007 Agent Under Fire, or Splinter Cell. Then you won't need to do the somewhat risky and annoying hotswap. ALso if you can solder, why not look into a TSOP flash?
5) Haha, well the way I got started on Xbox stuff was to read all that information. Once you start to see whats common among information it all starts to make sense.

Thanks guys!
I am thinking about doing the "hotswap".
What "tools" do you guys recommend?
I have "Firefuckers x-disk", will this be ALL I will need?
Can I take a used maxtor 60 gig, install in my pc and run firefuckers xdisk, then put it into the xbox and retrieve the eeprom thru evox?
Or will I need a "gamesave" exploit no matter what?
Thanks again guys for your help and patience! I have been more patient then usuall with this cuz there is so much outdated info!

Ok,
Heres my plan, I have a copy of "hdboxhdm" and a 60 gig hard drive.
I will make the drive from scratch and add some files to xbox c: drive like my exploit? I really have no preference on the dashboard so I think evoxm8?
What files should I include and where should I place them? I also have "dvd2xbox" which I would like to use to rip games to the hd.
Will I have to edit any .ini's?
Sorry for being such a pain!

The only thing you need (along with xbhdm) is the uxe complete package. Put it (and nothing else) in the c:\.
Build the hd and your modded. Then ftp in any apps like dvd2xbox after you're up & running.
Of course, you should get the eeprom from your stock xbox to generate a key to lock your new drive 1st. That usually entails a savegame or hotswap.

Great! I have "UXE".
I do plan on backin' up the eep! (Look forward to more questions!)
Now I have the 5838 and the 5659 kernel. "UXE" will work with these?
What are the diffs between uxe and uxe2?
Thanks for the help! I think I may have found another hobby! I already have my eye on a used xbox at the pawn shop.
I will let you guys know how it goes. I work this weekend but Tuesday is the day!

I have one more quick question: You said to retrieve the stock eeprom from the original hd? Can't I retrieve it from the machine with evox once it is booted from the new hd?
Thanks for all your help!

no. the eeprom must be gotten before you can use the new harddrive... so you can lock it... you have to have the EEPROM.bin to use xbhdm... the hard drive lock key is determined with your xbox specific EEPROM, and without it... you are almost screwed...(you would then have to have a modchip to recover)

this is what I did to softmod my xbox.
1: take out the origional xbox HD and use hd_driver to back it up (using the hotswap method). this will insure that if you screw anything up, you have the origional vergin state of the box so you can always use hd_driver to restore it.
2: once backed up, use what ever method you want to mod it. I used the origional HD and xbxhdm and softmoded it that way following this tutorial.
3: once modded, used evox to create the the backup of the eeprom and hd key. ftp this over to the PC and put it some where for save keeping. also, it wouldnt hurt to copy over the C: and E: partitions by ftp (so you can use your save games and the modded files later.
4: now, take out the origional HD and re-load the vergin iso back onto the origional HD, so you can put it away and use it again for what ever reason.
5: using the files that you copied from step 3: use xbxhdm to install the mod onto the larger HD. xbxhdm has the option so you can include files that you want to be copied over in addition to the hack, so this step will automaticly copy over your game saves and hacked files from C:
I know that this is a time consuming process, but this is how I installed a larger HD into my softmodded xbox. if someone has an easier way, by all means post it!

Thanks BlackWar,
One more little thing, this HD_Driver, won't xboxhd back up the drive?
I don't think I have HD_Driver. I will look for it.
Thanks again for the reply!
Can't wait for Tuesday and try all this out! (you guys might want to avoid the forums tues!)

as for xboxhdm backing up the drive, I dont think it will, being it is running from a cd. it might be able to (to another HD), but I never tried it. I just used hd_driver to do it. Yes, hd_driver is buggy, and it will throw some errors at you. dont let it scare you though, it does work.
-
funny how people still using hdd_driver.
-
if you have a better way to make a complete backup of the HD in windows by all means share! I would like to know of a better program.
-
well I still don't see why people need to make full backups either.
-
you don't need a backup of C also. like mentioned before you just need a few files that you can optionally get in a complete package. If you wanna keep your saves and msdash just copy them to your pc and later back to the new hd using ftp. There are also numerous post about hdd_driver images that got corrupted or the program quit working and stuff.
-
yeah well it's not the factor of owning an exploitable game but you mean the factor of having ftp acces which you can easily do with an installed exploit. I guess not all people have their xbox connected to their computer although that can't be much. I would still rather clone than using shitty programs though.

Gentlemen, if I may trouble you for one more tidbit? Where can one find "HD_Driver"?
Thanks for your time

Found "HDD_Driver" Installed it and when I try to start it it complains of a missing "msfc *****.dll" "Try re-installing"
I re-installed and have the same error. Anyone get this?

you have to use yahoo search and download the dll files seperately. there about 4 of em you need. just download em and place them in the same folder as the exe. when you get one installed, run the app and it will let you know what the next one is.
IMPORTANT! use yahoo search, NOT GOOGLE! for some reason the ones you find from google are not correct, but the ones you find from yahoo are.
-
Thanks BlackWar,
I downloaded the files but get a "ordinal 5038 could not be found" error!
Any Ideas?

Well I started with the 1.6's seagate hd.
Loaded the xboxhd with ude to iso and booted. Did the hotswap but it says "ude not found"
As the linux is booting it displays "sometype of seek error" It also says someplace "this is not a xbox"
I did the hotswap by unhooking the dvd and pulling the cable at the "goo" stage.
What am I doin' wrong?
Also if I type "xbrowser" in at the prompt it says "no xbox partition table found at dev/hda"

ok, I redid the Iso. I used "uxe" could not find the ude 1.4 Zip
After haotswapping Typing "uxe" does nothing. I can use xplorer. so now do i just rename fonts to f0nts and the .xbe file to.bak and transfer the ones from the cd over to the c: partition?
please reply

Progress so Far:
I have managed to back up the hd using "Hdd_driver"
I don't have a copy of "ude 1.4.zip" so I used "uxe" can I just copy the c: drive from my linux to the c: drive of the xbox?
Or: rename the .xbe and fonts to *.bak files and transfer the ones from "uxe" to the proper folders on the xbox?
If someone could help me out here that would be great! I'm gettin' itchy!

SUCCESS!
I now have the evoulution dash loaded and will attempt FTP access to backup the hd key and transfer dvd2xbox.
