XBOX TO LINUX IN 7 SIMPLE STEPS

AND

UPGRADING XBOX HARDRIVE IN 4 SIMPLE STEPS!
(Near Bottom)

ALSO

HOW TO BACKUP XBOX GAMES
(At Bottom)

This tutorial will guide you through how to install UDE along with linux on your xbox and once you have done that how to put a brand new PC hardrive in.

To start off with I have a little saying for this tutorial. If you want to install Linux on your xbox and you are one of these people who prefers to read what buttons you must press on a game before you actually play it then this tutorial is not for you.
In simple terms - If you cannot think for yourself and work things out for yourself don’t continue reading.
Also don't forget that this is MY way of how installed it since I was having so much trouble with other tutorials.

Ok so here we go.

Necessary Equipment:

* An Xbox (The older the better) - To find out your version

http://www.xbox-linu...onsfinding.html

* The Game - Mechassault (Has to be the original version NOT platinum hits or any other type)
 OR
 The Game - Splinter Cell
 OR
The Game - 007 - Agent Under Fire

* A PC Or Laptop With A USB Port

* Internet Connection (Preferably)

* An Action Replay Memory Card With USB Docking Station (With software -www.codejunkies.com) - If you can manage to get just the USB docking station then it would be good provided you own or buy a memory card. If not then its best to get both the card and station.

AND/OR

* An Official Memory Card Or Madcatz Memory Card -

If you have a way of accessing your memory card without using a docking station i.e.

http://www.xbox-linu...cs/howtoar.html

If you do then you will need an official or madcatz memory card. If not then you will need the Official card and USB docking station supplied with action replay.

Also although i have not tried this method myself but if you are stuggling with the USB stick method then check out this tut. SO YOU DONT NEED TO USE A MEMORY CARD OR AR (apperently) Once again i havent tried this way of doing it so i ant garuntee it will work :

http://forums.xbox-s...howtopic=262740

* The Latest Version Of ldots ltools Package -

There are 3 versions of this package depending on the gamesave exploit you wish to do.

Mechaussault, Splinter Cell or 007 - AUF (Agent Under Fire) For legal reasons I am not allowed to tell you or give you a link to where you can retrieve any of these packages but I will say that there is a good channel on IRC ;-)

* A Copy Of A Preferred Xbox Linux -

I used Gentoox Home Edition http://gentoox.shall...?name=Downloads but there are others out such as Ed's Xebian http://www.xbox-linu...ocs/debian.html and more but I will only be explaining Gentoox Home Edition in this tut.

(It has been rumored that the new versions of the Action Replay Memory Card corrupt the saves when transferring them but I’m not sure if it corrupts the ltools save as I used the USB Docking Station and an Official Memory Card so it’s up to you to take the gamble)

If you have all (most) of them, then you may continue.

I will be going through the mechassault savegame version of the ldiots tool package, the installed EvoX dashboard and the Gentoox Home Edition Installation.

Savegame Exploit:

1. Open up the Action Replay software and open up the directory in which your version of the ltools package is saved. The just simply drag and drop the .zip file into the middle column

(PC Database) After this drag the gamesave (Run Linux) across to the left column which shows your memory card and it should copy across.

user posted image

2. Take out the memory card from the docking station and put it into the top of your xbox joypad. On the microsft xbox dashboard choose memory and select the memory card with the gamesave on. Go to the gamesave and click A. The select Copy and copy the game to the xbox hardrive. Insert the chosen game which matches the chosen game save and wait for it to load.

user posted image

3. Once loaded select campaign and load up Run Linux by selecting it with A.
Once loaded scroll down (Press B if it just says Mechassualt disc) and select UDE Install.

Choose which UDE to install by which Kernel you have, UDE1 green (A) should be used on kernels prior to 5713 and UDE2 should be used on kernels 5713 and higher. Also the UDE2 only works on USA/Canadadian xboxes so this may come of help to some people if you have a kernel higher than 5713 and a PAL xbox:

http://forums.xbox-s...howtopic=257341

At this stage unless you own a 1.6 version of the xbox press green (A) if you own a 1.6 press blue (X).
Now you must choose your dashboard (I chose EvoX as it is good for if you wish to put apps onto your Hardrive and not have to keep selecting them yourself but MXM is more informational so it is up to you) Now just let it do its thing and wait until it says 'It is now safe to turn off your xbox' which you turn off.

Installing Linux (Gentoox):

You can stop here if you just wish to have evox on your xbox!!!

4. Turn the xbox back on and wait for it too load. You will be presented with a bios selector screen after the xbox intro has loaded.
To advance just repeatedly press A (Green) until the Bios intro loads up.
Once again when you see the picture of the bios loader just repeatedly press A until it loads up.

(I’ve found that if you remove the joypad from the xbox before the xbox intro has finished loading, it will skip the bios loader and take you straight to the dashboard but you must insert the joypad again after you are presented with the dashboard)

Now when I put Gentoox onto a CD-RW I was presented with an error when trying to install so

I had to FTP my xbox and upload certain files. If your copy of gentoox works fine from the CD then you may advance to step 6 if not follow step 5. (Since I did not use CD I do not know if there is a difference between CD installation and FTP installation but if you need further help with either installation:

http://gentoox.shall...rticles&secid=2

5. Since we cannot install gentoox via disc we must FTP the installation files to our xbox. I recommend using an FTP program for this step such as SmartFTP www.smartftp.com which will also come in use if you wish to install other apps such as mediacentre later on.

Now enter the IP of the xbox which should be displayed at the top right of the screen (EvoX) and use xbox for the username and password. Create a folder called Gentoox in a directory of your choice (C:\Gentoox) Now extract all the contents of the Gentoox Home Edition which you downloaded to it. Open stardust.iso which should be inside the folder where you extracted all the contents to, using IsoBuster:

http://www.smart-pro....net/isobuster/

Now create a new folder inside the folder you are in (C:\Gentoox) and extract all contents of stardust.iso to it (C:\Gentoox\Stardust ISO)
Now open the folder and open DISTRO.rar which has just been extracted and extract all the files to a new folder
(C:\Gentoox\Stardust\Gentoox Upload) now you must highlight all the files in the new folder and drag and drop them into E:\ on the xbox hardrive via SmartFTP (DO NOT use any folders just place them directly on E:\)

Now you must go to the directory, Dashboard (E:\Dashboard) and downlod evox.ini to your desktop and open it up from your desktop, now paste this into the text (near the bottom in the root section) directly below MS Dashboard : Item "Gentoox","E:\gentooxx.xbe" and make sure its all still
lined up correctly, save the .ini and send it back to your E:\Desktop in your xbox via ftp now restart your xbox. Once restarted on your dashboard should be an option to select Gentoox, select it and wait to load.

user posted image

6. Once loaded from the disc or via the FTP your joypad should begin to rumble (Don't worry this is normal) and if you just don’t press any buttons as it will automatically go to the Gentoox installation.
Once this has loaded you must follow the on screen instructions and highlight the text A (Green) and press B (Red) Once you have completed this you must select from various options.
I pressed A (Green) to every single choice, even though it did say it runs slow it seems to be running fine to me. When it asks you for the options about VGA and Remote Desktop etc. I recommend that you write the information down as it will come in use later on.
Once you have finished choosing options it will install Gentoox and when it says it is now safe to turn off your xbox, turn it off. (If no options appear on the install of gentoox then they may appear on the first run but once again I just selected green to all of them and mine works fine)

Running Linux:

7. Turn back on the xbox and when loaded choose Gentoox from the dashboard and once again you must not press any buttons as it loads gentoox automatically. Congratulations you now have an xbox which is running Linux! If you are using a TV to view on then I recommend you refer back to the information you wrote down upon installation about VGA etc and you should be able to use remote desktoping from your PC.

Misc.

If you wish to install any other things like xbox media centre then you must get the latest version.
(Once again for legal reasons I am not allowed to give you any information where to retrieve this from but there is an IRC channel which will answer all your questions)

Now go to E:\Apps Create a folder named xbmc and upload (drag and drop) all the contents of the .rar into the folder (NO subfolders) You must do this for all other apps you wish to use such as Config Magic etc. and just select launch menu and select apps from the dashboard.

Thank you for your time and I hope this tutorial has helped you in what you were stuck or struggling on.

FAQ:

Q. Why can i not use my joypad with linux?
A. If it is your first time running gentoox after the installation then it has trouble with your joypad. You must reset your xbox and load gentoox again wink.gif

Q. Why is it asking me for a CD after ive used the FTP method?
A. You must delete the installation files you used via FTP and upload them again exactly as you did before wink.gif

Q. Why does my screen go all distorted when it comes up with 'install linux' after i've clicked gentoox for the first time?
A. You must reset your xbox and try it again. I dont know why specifically why! Just do it! lol  wink.gif

Q. Will I still be able to use xbox live if i use this method?
A. OH YEH!!! Ok all you gotta do as far as i know is dont be stupid and click on anything that will trigger off live and you just gotta uninstall ltools whenver you want to go on live ;-)

Q. I think i've been banned from live! Can i get unbanned?
A. In short YES, BUT you will need to get a friends eeprom who isnt planning to use live. To update your Xbox's EEPROM with an unbanned EEPROM, download Configmagic and use it. The xbox's hdd has to be unlocked before you can update and as soon as your done lock it straight after! If you dont lock it then your xbox wont boot up again so i recommend backing up your eeprom onto your pc so that you can revert if anything goes wrong!

Q. My hdd is totally messed up! And i just keep getting error (6, 12 or 21) Help?
A.

Error 6 - Ok, from what i know of error 6 is because something is wrong with the hardrive, so maybe when you installed the new hdd you put the wrong key in or it is not locked properly.

Error 12 and 21 - These errors are both software errors and this means you have messed up something on the hardrive (e.g. You deleted default.xbe or you messed around with c:\.
There are two thing i can think of to sort this out.
1. Insert MA, SC or 007 and uninstall and reinstall ltools.
2. If the saves have gone or something else is wrong then looks like you may have to hotswap and redo the hdd (read into hotswapping, provided you backed up c:\ and the eeprom) or use a spare hdd to create a new xbox hdd (also provided you backed up your eeprom and c:\)

UPGRADING XBOX HARDRIVE IN 4 SIMPLE STEPS!

OK. If you have come this far then well done. Now I will give you a very easy method of how to put in a spare or brand new PC hardrive into your xbox and make it work.

!!!!WARNING!!!!

In order to make a regular PC hardrive work in your xbox it is going to require you to format the hardrive so you must either make a backup of the hardrive if you have any needed things on it or use a brand new one.

Also you are doing this at your own risk and i will not accept any blame for any stupid mistakes you make. However i can tell you that if you follow this tutorial word for word then i am pretty certain that nothing will go wrong and if it does i will try my best to give u all my help  wink.gif

OK, So here we go again.

Using this method you will not need to do anything to your original hardrive which means that if anything does go wrong you will still have an xbox :-)

Needed Equipment/Software:

xboxhdm 1.9 (Found in usual place) (/XBOX/Operating Systems/linux/distributions)

Torx 10 And Torx 20 Screwdrivers - To Open XBOX

A Spare/Blank PC Hardrive (Can be anything from 10gb to 10000gb i think)

FTP Program (AceFTP, SmartFTP etc.)

Formated Floppy Disk

A blank CD-R/W

Steps:

1. On your xbox's evox dashboard go to system utils and select backup. Once this has complete, on your PC run the desired FTP program and access ur xbox. Go to E:\ and download a file called 'backup_linux' to your PC hardrive.
Then go to the root of your xbox and download the full folders of C:\ and E:\ (You can use F:\ to if you want it) to your PC's hardrive.

Now extract all files in xboxhdm 1.9 to your PC'S hd and open up the folder 'linux' in that folder is a folder called 'eeprom' Inside the backup_linux folder you download earlier is an eeprom.bin put that into the eeprom folder in xboxhdm. Now go back and put the C:\ and E:\ which were downloaded earlier from ur xbox into the xboxhdm\linux folder and overwrtie the ones already there.

(This method is for if you want all your files (evox, gamesaves etc.) from your original xbox hardrive on your new one. If you dont then there is no need to put the C:\ and E:\ folders into the xboxhdm\linux folder)

Now in the root of xboxhdm are two files named 'make-dos-floppy' and 'make-iso-win'
You must run make-iso-win and wait for it to finish once it has finished.
Now run make-dos-floppy and insert a formated floppy disk.

Now burn the .iso which was created to a blank cd-r/w using nero or alcohol etc. When burning is finsihed shutdown pc.

2. Take out all other hardrives leaving a CD/DVD drive in and put in the hardrive you wish to make an xbox hardrive and set it to be the primary master. Boot up your PC and as it is loading press escape and set your PC to boot from CD. Now reset your PC and put the cd-r/w with the .iso you created on it, in the cd/dvd drive.

It shud come up looking like this:

  _  __ __         _  __    __  ______     __  ___      __
 | |/ // /_  ____ | |/ /   / / / / __ \   /  |/  /___ _/ /_____  _____

                                        __
                       ____ _____  ____/ /
                      / __ `/ __ \/ __  /
                     / /_/ / / / / /_/ /

                                  /____/

     1) Boot VGA console with xbox-drive utilities (default)
     2) Boot text-console with xbox-drive utilities
     3) Boot linux with locking/unlocking utilities
     4) Boot to DOS with HD unlock tools
(use with caution. Passwd log-files are not saved after reboot)

Choose Option 1 and press enter.

When it asks you for a login type xboxhd.

Now you will see this:

__   ___                 _   _______  ___  ___      _
\ \ / / |               | | | |  _  \ |  \/  |     | |
 \ V /| |__   _____  __ | |_| | | | | | .  . | __ _| | _____ _ __
 /   \| |_ \ / _ \ \/ / |  _  | | | | | |\/| |/ _' | |/ / _ \ '__|
/ /^\ \ |_) | (_) >  <  | | | | |/ /  | |  | | (_| |   <  __/ |
\/   \/_.__/ \___/_/\_\ \_| |_/___/   \_| |_/\__,_|_|\_\___|_|

You have the following options :
        1) Build a new Xbox HD from scratch
        2) Rebuild C-partition on existing Xbox-drive
        3) Clone existing Xbox HD
        4) Install F-drive
        5) Wipe current fatx partition table
        6) Generate HD Key (requires eeprom)
        7) Make DOS floppy with HD lock/unlock tools
        8) Quit

Choose option 1 again and it will begin to format and write the partiton table etc.

If you put your C:\ and E:\ onto the CD then when it asks you about them type yes and when it asks you if you would like an F select yes, it is all pretty self explanatory.

When it has finished and is back at the option choosing screen choose option 6 '6) Generate HD Key (requires eeprom)' when it loads write down the hdd pass. !!!

DOUBLE CHECK YOU HAVE WRITTEN DOWN THE PASSWORD CORRECTLY!!!

Alternativley you can choose option 3 at the main selection screen - 3) Boot linux with locking/unlocking utilities
Then type hdlock
!This will require your eeprom being on the xboxhdm disc and it will look at the eeprom and automatically lock your hdd for you! :-)

If your still a bit unsure then continue to the begining of step 3 and lock it using the password which you wrote down ;-)

Now quit and turn off the PC.

You now have a brand new nearly-usable xbox hard drive if this worked  smile.gif

3. OK now for the hard part which is easy to mess up so be careful!

Shutdown the PC and insert the floppy which you put the bootable dos floppy files on.
Boot the PC and wait for it to load. Now type in hdlock and when it asks for a password type in the password which you wrote down earlier from the option 6 on the CD. It should lock the hardrive and save the hddpass to the floppy.

3A. If u wish to go for an easier way and put the eeprom.bin on the cd instead of loading the floppy up and typing in the hdd pass load the cd and on the first option screen of the CD pick option 3 '3) Boot linux with locking/unlocking utilities' Type in lockhd

It will now search for the eeprom on the CD and will automatically lock the hardrive.

The master password is set to XBOXSCENE
You can use this to unlock the HDD if you loose the eeprom password you your eeprom gets lost. Boot the xboxhdm to DOS (option 4 '4) Boot to DOS with HD unlock tools') and run the atapwd tools to unlock using Master passwords.

!!!I suggest that you do not use this method as i cannot garuntee that it works as i didnt use it and am not sure if it works as i have only read about it!!!

Now Turn off the PC and take out the hardrive when it has finished locking.

WELL DONE YOU NOW HAVE A BRAND NEW CUSTOM XBOX HARDRIVE!!!  biggrin.gif

4. Now use the link below to open up and remove your original xbox hardrive and replace it with the brand new one (You must remove the black casing around the hardrive to put a new one in)

http://www.xbox-scen...icles/open1.php

Put in your brand new, custom hdd in place of your old one.
Load up your xbox and have fun!
That Is ALL! Simple As!  laugh.gif

HOW TO BACKUP XBOX GAMES

!!! DISCLAMER!!!

In no way do i endorse or allow the right to use this method to produce copies of xbox games which are not legally yours. I have written this tutorial for people who wish to make a backup of thier own xbox games because they may get misplaced or damaged and do not think its right that they should go out and spend money to buy a new copy when they already own a copy but they can now not play it!

There are 2 ways to backup an xbox game both of which require you to have either a software modded or a hardware modded xbox. Here are the 2 ways:

1. Backup xbox game to xbox hardrive.
2. Backup xbox game to DVD.

I will now explain how to do these 2 ways.

1. In order to backup a game to your xbox hardrive you can either put complex tools onto your xbox and use that. The application is pretty self explanatory but if you do need help just reply to this topic or PM me. This app can be obtained from the usual places.

If the first way did not work for you then you may wish to take this longer way. Insert the game into your xbox disc drive. Connect to your xbox via FTP and download all the contents of the disc to your PC hardrive (The dis drive is D:\ on your xbox)
When you have all the files on your PC hardrive you must then transfer all the files into E:\games or F:\games and create a folder with the name of the game e.g E:\games\Halo or F:\games\Halo and copy all the files from you PC hardrive to that folder. That is all.

2. In order to backup an xbox game to a DVD you must own a DVD writer and a blank DVDR.
Insert the game into your xbox disc drive. Gain access to your xbox via FTP and copy all the contents of the game onto your PC. You must now run Qwix (Get it at the usual places) In Qwix choose create iso and choose local folder. Now browse to the game folder and select it. (If the games contents are not in a folder then you must create one)
Now click create iso and name it.
Once it has finished you must use stomp recordnow max (You may use another iso burning program like nero or alchol 120% but i can garuntee that stomp recordnow max will work and its free smile.gif )
In recordnow max select image (top left) and then select add file. Now browse to the .iso which you created using Qwix. Now press the red button and it should start recording.  biggrin.gif

SIMPLE AS THAT!!!

If either of these methods didn't work for you look around on here:

You dont actually need the gamesave all you need is the UDE installation package.
And if you look closley ive hinted to you where to get it.  wink.gif
Title: XBOX To Linux In 7 Simple Steps And,
Post by: krayzie on August 10, 2004, 07:20:00 AM
Uhh maybe you can use the enter key some more. Some paragraphs seem to be all clutched together which makes it hard to read. Also I noticed you use the UDE installer by ldots (which is an excelent tool but your info is a bit wrong. UDE1 should be used on kernels prior to 5713 and UDE2 should be used on kernels 5713 and higher. Also the UDE2 only works on USA/Canada xboxes. Pal and NTSC-J xboxs should witch eeproms first but then certain games that can be used for the exploit can become useless since they have another region. Another thing: I didn't read anything about adding an update.xbe to the package (might be there but maybe I overread it.)

i really dont understnd the UDE installer   is  it a program or something that you put on you memory crad then put on your xbox ????????

Thanxs again, Im gunna go through it again and put in all the stuff u said and as 4 the update.xbe i didnt have to do anything with that which is why i never put it in. And yes UDE installation Package is something you put on your memory card, as it says in the TUT  wink.gif

ahhh well maybe ldots put in some patch to change the existing update.xbe in the dashboard. Then you won't be needing to add it anymore like before. The man is like a genius.

I rarely spent time here on the GameSave Exploits anymore - so many posts to answer on the XBE exploit pages smile.gif
Glad to see you made good use of ltools though. Just read through the thread quickly. You're right the update.xbe is not needed anymore. The installer will generate the UDE1 or UDE 2 update.xbe from the present dashboard from a set of patches.
And choosing UDE2 with a Region 2 or 4 xbox should be safe. The installer check your region and will abort an UDE2 install if the region is not 1.

Finally, please edit my name in the root post. It's ldots - not what you wrote  dry.gif

i think the stardust package is an iso in which case burn to media that your xbox can read with an app that can burn the image file extension .iso like nero

or use an app like deamon tools to extract the files cause i dont thinmk
its in xbox format so you wouldnt need like xiso

A few menu click using the game pad in front of the TV and if you have a fast enough network, have Xebian installed(ok, the livefs version).

Or get a Y splitter, hotplug a HD and a few clicks in from of the TV and you can have a new locked HD that you can replace the stock one with all the content cloned, no PC involved ?

Title: XBOX To Linux In 7 Simple Steps And,
Post by: triggernum5 on August 19, 2004, 04:55:00 PM
I think a good idea for any tut would be an expiry date (Not set in stone) So that after everybody has forgotten about it because much better methods have been developed, newbs going tutorial hunting will have an indication that it is outdated..  So many ppl end up with huge problems because they followed a tut they assumed was current
Basically then if the expiry date approaches, and the tut is still valid the expiry can be changed.  Too bad this isn't the case with all those old fonts tuts..

Ok, thanks to LostKorn I was able to procure everything that was necessary.  Here are the current results:

1 - I have a 1.6 box (?) - April 2004  K:5838 D:5659
2 - Mechassault Exploit w/ AR memory stick.
3 - Ltools-1.7.5-MA.zip

Everything worked out well to get the mechassault saved game onto the system and get the package running through the campaign option.

First thing I tried was to run the XBOX Information option and it gave me an error to backup the data first.  I tried that, then received a queer psycodelic screen and an orange light on the eject button.

Power cycling brought me back to the menu once again where I attempted to install the UDE.  I went through the options and selected the UDE2 option due to my version/kernel and selected the Evox dash option.  Again the system went to the psycodelic screen and orange light.

Power cycled again, prompted for the UDE2 install and now I am receiving an error:

Error (line 1): ActionScript file failed execution

When I boot the machine again, every choice for UDE install gives this error - Uninstall, Install, whichever.

When I choose to run Mini-Linux I get the psycodelic screen and an orange light.

I am stuck on the next what to do next.  I had done a search on the script error, but there has not been much mentioned on the subject...  Anyone have any pointers on what to do next?

this 'weird psychodelic screen' is linux backing up your C: and installing ude, JUST LET IT RUN!

please dont tell me u turned it off before it told u it was safe....

You might wanna try to compile a list of media that can be read in the three dvd players.  This will by no means be bulletproof, but it will be the determining factor for success in most cases.  In general, dvd-r will yield more success than dvd+r. The process is not difficult, but finding a workable media can be..

He is referring to the ATIP info you can read off the disk with any burner. You can read this info with a program like X-ATA, (some burning programs display limited info).  The actual brand of the media is secondary to the manufacturer..  And I agree with krrazie, I've had the best success with Ritek discs as well..  My old Thomson DVD used to read various Ritek cdr's.  I don't remember the exact particulars of the dye.

QUOTE (scspieker @ Aug 21 2004, 09:01 PM)
I have managed to work around the Error (line 1): ActiveScript file failed to execute problem.

Here is what I had done (on a hunch):
1 - I started the xbox up again and it booted into the MS dash.  I accessed the memory section, then xbox harddrive.  I removed the MA Run Linux Save game as well as the Mech Assault 'category' in the memory section.
2 - I loaded the save game back to the hard drive once again using the procedure in the tutorial.
3 - Launched the campaign and Run Linux option from MA and sure enough there was the menu again.  I opted for the  UDE 2 install and left the screen all psycodelic while the drive light was orange.  I waited until the light changed to blinking green (I think that is what it was).

4 - Rebooted and there was the Evox menu.  It took a couple of attempts to get through the menu, but I figured out that the directional pad was what moved the menu selection up and down (duh!).

5 - I installed the Gentoox Home disc - CDR and it choked.  Burned it again on CD-RW and Viola!  The gentoox screen came up, but was unreadable (I'm thinking I need the 640x480 option or whatever that I still need to read up on.)

So at least there is a way around the ActionScript error encountered earlier.  Now to get the screen to work properly...

see, a little patience with loading screens goes a long way wink.gif

as for gentoox u do need 2 set the video mode to 640x480 if ur using a normal tv with the normal xbox av connector

Turn off dhcp on your PC settings, and make your PC IP address 192.168.0.1.   Also remove any default gateways you see in any setup.   Leave them blank.  Should be able to connect when you turn dhcp off on your PC anyways.

Dude, it has nothing to do with locking, or floppies..  Most likely files got corrupted during transfer assuming he did everything else right as far as copying goes..  Does the stock hdd work?  Because error 21 would be expected if you should have installed UDE2.  Thats not the only cause by a long shot however..

Error 21 is a generic dashboard error that is very unspecific..  It sometimes is caused by bad/missing signatures.  This would be the case if files were corrupted during transfer.

why the hell do you wanna boot to slayers evox? That's just some stupid app installer and has some format options. It has no purpose of a dashboard.

oh boy!

need help!!!!

i tried to install gouki's evox first and i stopped at the bert and ernie step because somebody told me about UDE, and after i read korn's instructions it sounded idiot-proof for somebody like me. well i was wrong!!!! i used AR to transfer the save over to my xbox (K: 4034 / D: 5659) and i started MA, loaded the game save, and everything was going good at that point. i hit install UDE, then selested UDE, then i chose evox, and then i can't remember what i chose for a pbl, but it was whatever option "A" (green) was. After that the screen went blank, there was some white text at the top of my tv screen and after a second the screen went blank, and the led on the front of the xbox went orange. i waited for about 20 seconds, then the system shut off. i turned it back on and it took me right back to MA...

i tried to do the UDE again, but now i get an error:
ERROR (line1): (callscript) "ActionScript file failed execution"

so i thought the gouki evox files that were on the system were maybe fudging up the UDE install. so i loaded up MA gamesave so i could FTP into my xbox to remove the files...

well, my HD is totally messed up. the "i" folder is gone, when i click on folders "g" or "f" (and "g" is a new folder, possibly the "i" folder renamed)  i get a message saying directory not found. my "z" folder is empty (my backup of "z" has 394 files in it

what is my next step? if i have FTP access is it safe to just replace everything in each folder with the backup i have?  need help please!!!!

if you want a USB adapter go here:

http://www.lik-sang....bff7338424852f3

I'm Canadian too, and it was really cheap ordering from them. With shipping and all, it was about 25 buck CAN with shipping; really cheap if you ask me. Although, it is even cheaper to make one your self... and you don't HAVE to solder.

Your bios needs to support lba48..  Most newer bioses do..  Any ending in .06, or .67 are fine..  .06 bioses allow your f: to use all extra space after reformatting, the .67 bios will put the extra space in g:.

Gotta quick question. I have a NTSC-J xbox and a NTSC-J version of Mechassault(not the platinum hits.) Anyways I am using a mega X Key and I have Ltools. Now my problem is when I try to run linux after I choose campaign. The game seems to freeze. I dont even get a error message 21 like everyone else gets. The thing is that the Mega X key was used before on my friends US xbox with no problems so I dont think the file is corrupt. Do I have to change the language back to japanese or something on my xbox. The file is all on there about 460 blocks so it must me. Hummm!!!! Any help. 1 member on this site got me this far(thanks!!!!!!!!) who will help me finish this?thanks in advance!!!!

the UDE only works on NTSC and PAL,  not NTSC-J xboxs. even if you used ltools, or installed it yourself. You have to use ConfigMagic to change the region code.

using the usb stick tut and this tut i was able to get to the installing screen. though i'm getting this error:

correct update.xbe has not bee found. either install dash 4920, 5659, or 5960 or add the update.xbe to the package. connect install ude.

i got the same installation error with both udes.
k: .5101
d: .4920

btw.. used ltools ma 1.7.5

any suggestions? do i need to add update.xbe (hopefully in the usual spots) to their package?

What version is your xboxdash?  Go to Settings > System Info in msdash, and note the D number.  Might as well note your kernel as well..  If it is below 4920 you will need an xbox live game to update the dash..

Edit: Sorry I see you have 4920.. I've seen this glitch before but haven't solved it.   I think it has to do with case sensitivity on the filenames..

OK, im kinda confused here but what i said before about the update.xbe on the game was just a guess and i dont know if it actually works!

Heres what i did:

Copied the update.xbe from my xbox to my pc via ftp.
Ftpd into my m8s xbox and put the update.xbe into a certain folder (You need to write down the folder that it tells you to put the update.be into when it says it couldnt install)
The tryed intalling again and it worked fine!

So im not sure if this would work but u cud try it but make sure u make backups of everything first.

Ftp into your xbox using ltools installer
Leave the mechassualt disc in and put the update.xbe from the game to your pc
Now upload it to the folder which it says which you wrote down when it says it couldnt install.

If that doesnt work PM me!

i haven't been able to fix the problem yet.. but i'm planning to see if there is an update.xbe file in the slayer evo package and if so ftp that over and test it out.
but i was curious.. now that i have ftp access to my box can i move games and emulators over and would i be able to play them through the ltools installer? by that i mean the dash i can get to before you either install the ude exploits or install mini linux.

ive got a question that i cant find answered anywhere on this forum.

Say i follow your tutorial to step 3, install the UDE, and dont want to install linux. Say I choose to have EvoX installed, but after thats done, then what? What else do I have to do to be able to play the games from my hard drive? anything? is there an option in EvoX to view hard drive for games (or something like that)? I have no clue because I havent modded my xbox yet (im waiting for the last part to come in the mail)

an answer would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Ok what do you mean by linux? If you are reffering to linux as an exploit like UDE then it would mean that you would only get 8gb of storage space in an unmodded state but if you mean linux as in gentoox then it wouldnt make one bit of a difference

is it possible to do this with a kernel of 4043? I tried using the old version of itools thats in the normal place but it wont work! I really wanna get this to work but my stupid old kernel wont let me! I know that xbox live would fix my kernel but i dont have it and I really dont wanna buy it right not unless its a last ditch effort

EDIT: Also, is there any way to ftp to/from your xbox without installing evox, just having the installer screen up?

Did you try the oldkernelfix for the 4034?  That should allow it to work, but in anycase yes you can ftp as soon as the installer is on the screen if you see a valid IP..

I think this tutorial is great and really easy to understand...However before I start modding, I have a question.

on step 3:

OK you say choose which ude to install....Is this something I need to download and install on to thexbox? and how can I find out what kernal I have( I know I have an xbox 1.0)? As far as the dashboard is that another thing that I need to get and install?

I know this might be kind of stupid to ask but I am very new to this,
So Thanks verymuch for helping.

I would suggest you try to see if you can load a small evox save off the AR rather than a complete ltools package.. The smaller the save, the less likely corruption is..  Typically corrupt saves result in an error 21 screen, but not 100%..
Regarding a chip install, I'm in an entirely different boat..  If you've never held a soldering iron, an xbox mobo is not the place to start..  Tons of ppl kill their xboxes with bad soldering!!  Especially since most ppl can only get their hand on irons designed for all purpose soldering that can scorch the pcb in the blink of an eye..  (Ppl who work on boards like these professionally do it at expensive rework stations that have dozens of different tips and controllable temperature..) Much better to find somebody handy with an iron and buy them a beer for their 5 minutes of time..

I decided to mod my xbox a week ago today, I started my research and read everything, everywhere. I was ready to start using one of the other methods to mod my box until I found this one. This has been one of the most stupid simple, straight forward and to the point projects that i've seen. Appreciate the Tut. Congrats and good day.

1.3 ver Halo Edition Xbox
modded w/007 exploit
running Slayers 2.6_Final
& upgrd hdd to 120gig  (for now)

stupid simple if you take your time, read, and pay attention.

thanks again,

Did you look to see if you have a txt file on your floppy with those dos locking programs on it..  Your hdd is locked wrong..  This can be very bad..  Personally I think that is a really bad way to go about locking a hdd..  You either made a typo, or something else went wrong..  Your only hope is the pw in the txt file since those dos tools don't set a master password at all..  It is MUCH smarter to boot into the xboxhdm mode that supports locking..  lockhd not only sets the master password to XBOXSCENE, but it has functions to use the eeprom.bin and eliminate human error..

I have a another question, if there is anybody, how do you get avalaunch installed into the xbox or is a crossover CAT5 cable really needed? Can you just use a straight CAT5 cable?

you need either a crossover cable, or a router....and you put avalaunch into your dashboard folder (wherever it is, if you used Ltools it will be E:\dashboard) and name the avalaunch xbe to default.xbe (you'll need to name the former default.xbe to something else)

I'm thinking about softmodding my Xbox this weekend, but my router will not accept IPs in the 192.168.0.x range.  They have to be in 192.168.1.x or they will not connect.  I changed my PC's IP to 192.168.0.2 and I couldn't even ping my router.  Will I still be able to install Linux if I have an installation DVD burned?  Do I need to change my Xbox's IP and if so?

Thanks

Hello i go to upgrade my hdd and i made the cd-rw and the floppy and all then when i hit option 1 (Boot VGA console with xbox-drive utilities (default) it says:

you passed an undefined mode number.

What is going on? Im guessing the hdd is too big (160 gig) it's a softmod without a chip BTW.

Thanks

The Great Return Of LostKoRn Has Finally Arrived  biggrin.gif

Sorry I've Been Away From The Scene For A Year Or So And Have About 500 Messages In My Inbox Most Of Them About Problems With The Tut  unsure.gif

Now I Have A Good Year Or So Of Experience And A Few New Tricks Up My Sleeve  smile.gif
When Recently Softmodding My Friends V1.6b Xbox It Occured To Me How Easy And Great The Softmod Has Become.
Just Over 1 Year Ago, Trying To Softmod A V1.6 UK Xbox Would Have Been A Big Pain, Now With Many Thanxs To People Like Krayzie, It Has Become So Easy Its Amazing.

So I'm Going To Do A Major Overhaul Of The Tut And Make Things A Bit More Simpler By Using Krayzies Brilliant Ndure Installer biggrin.gif And Also Include A Few New Things About Upgrading The Hardrive Too.

One Thing Ive Noticed Though Is Ive Lost The Ability To Edit My Posts So I Wont Be Able To Edit The Main Tut And Will Have To Post The New Stuff As A Reply  sad.gif

Will Post Back V.Soon With The New Material.

Post Feedback As To Whether You Want To See This Or Just Leave The Original Cos It Was Good Enough And The 360 Will Rule Over Every Xbox Post Soon lol

I have no problem to copy the Save Games to my Xbox (NTSC J) sold in Asia.  But I have problem to load the original games (e.g. 007, MA etc.) in my Xbox since the games are used and sold in US and the message said that “Invalid region format”.  How can load the games and used the Save game to softmod my Xbox (NTSC J)?
