Title: How Is This Possible?
Post by: BlazinKhan on May 07, 2004, 07:37:00 PM
Alright, well I'm trying to do a HDD upgrade from stock to 80gb on a Xbox that I put an Exploit on.  I know my basic knowledge and I read the tutorial (http://www.xbox-scen...ip-hdd-swap.php) and I think I can handle it.  But, at step 2, I'm confused already  dry.gif ....

It says quote, "Step 2: Getting our xbox drive key
Using another tutorial, load evox up using the 007 gamesave exploit on your xbox.
It is important to not use any bios loaders, font hacks, sound hacks, or anything like this as we need a pure key generated for your xbox harddrive."

Now, in order for the exploit to work you have to have those 3 things on don't you?  So how can I obtain this 'pure key' when I've done the exploit.  Can someone help me please.

Using a game save hack which loads the exploit in the retail game itself so it has not been modifed, no other bio's are loaded and no keys have been patched into memory.  I know ConfigMagic can get the key but I'm not sure if it follows the same rules.  Maybe someone can answer better for you.

You could use a game save exploit and evox to get your eeprom/hdd key.

If you allready have your xbox softmodded I recommend just uploading ConfigMagic and use this to get the hdd key and eeprom. I dont see why it should matter that you have used the font hack and PBL prior to running ConfigMagic. It just reads the eeprom data from the chip itself and uses this to calculate the hdd password.

BTW. For and easy way to make a working upgrade HD once you have the eeprom, check out xboxhdm (look at my sig).

Alright thanks.  I'll use ConfigMagic and than I should be fine than right?

I'll read this hdm stuff and hopefully it'll make everything easier smile.gif

I read it over and all the other faqs and such with it.  It seems as though you can't use XBL if you do this.  I think my friend wants to play on XBL, but I'm not sure.  I don't think it'll even matter since he's upgrading his HD and they can detect that now.  Thanks for the help and if I need any further help with this process can you PM me your AIM and/or e-mail?  I've never done this before so I know I'll need help along the way.  Hope you can help me smile.gif

Another question...

Could I just copy everything from his old HD and put onto new HD?  Would that be cloning?  Would it work?  How exactly do you clone?

dry.gif I know I'm asking a lot of questions, sorry, and thanks.

After reading your thing and downloading it... Do I basically just put my C and E in the folder provided in the xboxhdm than burn the CD and put it onto blank hd?

i upgraded my box using this tutorial: HD Upgrade i've done this w/ 5 or 6 softmodded boxes with no problems at all.

as far as live goes, i'm not sure about 3.0. there is a tut out to let live 2.0 run on a softmodded box, but i don't know if they cracked 3.0 yet.

You put your C and E there yes! Then run the make-iso-win.bat script, and burn the generated iso to CD. Boot with new HDD on primary master and type xboxhd. The rest should be easy...
You can also include your eeprom.bin on the CD and have it calculate the hdd password for the new HDD (get version 1.3). Then choose the option to make a floppy with locking/unlocking tools and lock the new HDD for your xbox.
Easiest way to upgrade a hdd in my opinion - you actually dont have to remove the old hdd from the xbox before the new one is ready for action  biggrin.gif

Alright... That's wicked.  So I don't have to even do that unlocking and locking business with my old HD.  That saves me a lot of time and effort, lol.

After I burn CD and hook up hard drive, do I just put stuff from CD to the blank hard drive?  Or what exactly goes onto the blank hard drive after I have it connected?

I got my C and E onto the folder and my eeprom.bin in the other folder.  Thanks to everyone for helping.  I'm going to try this method first since it seems the easiest.  I'm still not sure what exactly I do after I got it connected (can someone respond ASAP, lol, I got it connected to my other computer and I'm kinda lost, the CD works and I got my blank HD connected)

Thanks again everyone !

Oh crap.. one important thing.. Did I have to put the backup folder in the thing that had to be burned??????????
Title: How Is This Possible?

Alright.. I tried to lock it, but than it's like you need a floppy to save or something.  Does this mean it didn't save when I tried to lock it?

Everything else went well, I think.. Everything got onto the blank HD I believe..

Would should just put your C-drive files in the C-folder of the linux-directory, same with E. Put eeprom.bin in eeprom folder (not the entire backup dir you get from evox). Then run make-iso-win.bat to make the iso.

Sounds like you allready ran the xboxhd tool and got you HDD build. The run hopefully ran the "HDD password generator" to get the unique password for your new HDD, and then locked it with this passwd. When you choose to run the locking tool from CD you will we warned that the log-files containing the passwords you used for locking will be gone after reboot (since the CD media is read-only). These log-files are usefull if you by accident used a wrong passwd. Therefore you have the option to insert a floppy to save these log-files. But it is optional...

Oh thanks, lol...Um, I didn't get a HDD key I had to enter one.. It was like please enter hdd key.. It's suppose to be 32 digits right?  I think I had 40 (I got it from the hddkey.txt after using backup)
Title: How Is This Possible?

biggrin.gif. You were installing a new hdd right? The password you get from the evox backup is for you old HDD, and will not work for the new drive. That's why you should run the "Generate hdd password" option in xboxhd.

But you dont have to! Since you know the hdd password you used (your old one), you can just unlock the HDD with this password. Then boot xboxhdm with the HDD on primary master. Run xboxhd and choose the "Generate HDD password" option to get the correct key. Then lock!

Bah... I got the BSOD after all that :'( .... I'm going to try it again.  Btw, in the fonts folder (since I'm doing the exploit) I have bert.xtf, ernie.xtf, xbox book.xtf, xbox.xft than I have xbox book.fnt & xbox.fnt .. Are those two suppose to be in there?

Also, another thing... Since I'm getting the BSOD & it was flashing red (xbox light) what should I do?  I'm going to reburn the CD and try everything over .. Lets hope it works this time.. Idots, can you give me your AIM s/n please? lol..

dry.gif Another thing... In the isolinux there was an initrd.gz (winzip file)  I just left it as is.. Should I unzip it and put the file along with the zip in that folder?  Or delete the zip and put the file.. Just need to know these minor things, so I can get it to work !

Oh and should I put my backup folder in C too??

I've given up with Idots method.. I'm moving on to the 8 step one.. It's short, but I can't get my computer to read both the original hard drive (as secondary slave) and new hard drive (primary slave).  My computer is primary master.  It won't read it either of them.. It's getting very annnoying !

In the fonts folder you should not have both bert and ernie and the original fonts with the same extension (*.xtf). If you use Mech fonts the originals must be renamed to *.bak. With other fonts you can rename them to what you want. Like *.fnt (trying to run Thc dash eh?).

Having both B&E and the original fonts with same extension could very well be the reason for your BSOD.

Why dont you try to just build a working non-modded HDD to begin with???

And you shouldn't touch anything in the xboxhdm folder. Only add your C-drive files in linux/C and optionally your E-drive files in linux/E. Then put your eeprom.bin in linux/eeprom. Nothing else! It's easy man, just ask previous users tongue.gif

See, I'd want to do it, but now I can't even burn the CD.  One of the files maybe messed up or something because it keeps failing to burn.  I'll try it again, I suppose.. but, is there anyway I can completely clean my new HD (so I can start over)  Thanks again Idots !

oh and I used MechAssault and I just want EvoX on my new HDD than I'll install ThC dash myself, so I'll get rid of those .fnt I suppose..

Another thing I was wondering... I have a friend whose really good with this stuff and he could easily install stuff on to it, but he doesn't know anything about the exploit.  So could he put the MS dash on it than I could do the exploit and work from there?
Title: How Is This Possible?
Post by: ldots on May 11, 2004, 11:15:00 AM
If you messed up some files in the xboxhdm package I would recommend re-downloading it.

Then pack the C and E folders in the xboxhdm/linux dir. and put the eeprom.bin in xboxhdm/linux/eeprom as explained before. Why not try and pack the C dir with un-modded files to be sure you get a working HDD to begin with. If you want to start all over on your HDD then choose the "wipe current fatx partition table" when you boot xboxhdm and run the xboxhd tool.

Does you kernel support PBL? (below 5530). If so, pack the C dir with dash 4920 (get it from Slayers if you dont have it). Then an easy install of the audio and font hack, aswell as PBL and Evox is supplied by a softmod package I put together for xboxhdm. Check the last link of my sig.

uhh.gif  Not sure what you mean.
If you mean pack the xboxhdm CD with the regular MS dash and original files, then yes - that's what I  would recommend you to do to be sure you can get this HDD going.

Didn't you allready try with all the stuff? Why not start with getting your HDD to work. Then mod it? Like packing your CD with the C-drive from Slayers (if your kernel allows downgrading) and your eeprom. That cant go wrong (shouldn't at least). You can always add exploits later on...
Title: How Is This Possible?

Well I wasted about 5 CDs on trying to burn it lol.. It keeps saying Medium Not Present (I'm using Nero) after about 5 minutes of burning (about 5%).  I'm pretty sure my CD burner is busted so I'm going to try another method which is easy..It's only 8 steps and all you have to do is clone the old one onto new one using winhex.  Only problem is hooking up 3Hd at once :|

Idots, you probably know this.. Is there any way I clean the new HD completely since I put stuff on it from my previous attempt.. Thanks !
Title: How Is This Possible?
Post by: ldots on May 11, 2004, 12:59:00 PM
biggrin.gif

About you HDD. There is a way to clean it (fill it with zeros). But there is no need - waste of time. If you are going to clone it you will read the original HDD sector by sector and dump the output to the new HDD. So the cloning doesn't care about what's allready on the new HDD. It will be overwritten.

Alright thanks.. lol I hope your around right now, I need you again, lol..
.
Um, is there a program / how can I genereate hdd key for my new HD?

Also, the HDD password should be 32 characters right?  Because I have one with 40 so I'm guessing that one isn't right.  When I use unlockx it says enter password, I'm guessing thats the unique hdd key??? or is that that 40 character hting..
Title: How Is This Possible?
Post by: ldots on May 11, 2004, 02:03:00 PM
biggrin.gif).

The unique HDD password is 20 bytes ( 40 characters) followed by 12 zero bytes (24 characters) as explained in a previous post. Where did you get this from?
When typing in the passwd you can omit the zeros.

dry.gif OMFG...... I did everything and at the final step (making winhex copy from original to new one) I get stupid errors from winhex.  I got the full version and everything.. I got the key from backup in the hddkey.ini or w/e...

I dunno what to do now.. I've tired 2 methods, wasted like 20 hours.... Argh  mad.gif

Can anyone tell me this..I have a friend who upgraded my HD for my modded Xbox.  If he did the same thing for this HD than I put it in my modded xbox and put the exploits on it than put it in non modded xbox, would it work?  Can someone suggest any other tricks or anything because I don't think I'm going to get any of these methods to work in order to get my new HD to work.  I wish oh how I wish I had a CD burner that worked  dry.gif

How do I unlock my friggin' HD... I tried my HD password (40 characters) from my old HD, the HD password for my new HD (got it from using Idots thing).. I got the program to work and anything, but than I couldn't unlock.  I tried different passwords that maybe someone put in by accident or something.  I think it's locked because of my first attempt and now I can't get it unlocked.  Is there anyway I can get it unlocked by using a floppy disk or CD or something.  hdunlock is NOT working nor is unlockx .. Please someone help!
Title: How Is This Possible?
Post by: ldots on May 12, 2004, 12:04:00 AM
OK - you have the eeprom from you unmodded HDD on the CD (in the eeprom folder), and you run the "HDD password generator" to get the password, and this password doesn't unlock the HDD? Do you have the very latest version of xboxhdm (v.1.3). There was a bug in the password generation in the previous version. Maybe try booting to windows and running liveinfo (remember to load eeprom) to verify that you get the same password.
If this doesn't unlock your HDD then it could be that you at some point during your ungoing struggle locked it with a incorrect password. If you ran the locking utility from floppy you will find some log-files on the floppy that might lett you dig out what password you could have used.

You could prepare the HDD on your modded xbox. Then after you are done generate a HDD password for this HDD with the eeprom from your unmodded xbox. Lock it and you are done.

Yeah I generated HD key and all that stuff.. I THINK I know why.  I used a different computer when I failed before using your program and my friend told me it has to be on the same mother board.  So I have to go back to that computer and unlock it and it should work.

BTW, is there anything I have to do with your program to copy all the files on to the HD?  Does it do it automatically when I go to build HD from scratch or something?
Title: How Is This Possible?
Post by: ldots on May 12, 2004, 11:11:00 AM
It copies everything from the C and E folders on the CD automatically when building from scratch. Again this is only true for the latest version, so please get that.

Yeah I got & used 1.3 when I did it.. I'll to my friends house tomorrow (since I used his HD to originally lock) and I'll try it.  Thanks again Idots.

Just a quick run through for what I have to do...
Put CD in, start up w/ HD in.. Unlock, build HD from scratch, lock (with the generated PW)

Oh and um I just typed in hdkey when it told me my HD is locked and I can't do it.  It brought up a screen with my hdd key and pw.  That is the right one I'm assuming since it's the only HD in and it tells me the model and everything and gives me hdd key + pw.

xboxhd doesn't unlock it for you - only provides the pw. Reboot in DOS to unlock. Then boot to xboxhd again.

Alright that's fine.. So than I can just leave my old C and E (with all the stuff in them) and than do the softmod stuff later..

Well his computer kept giving a hard disk error.  My friend got a new 80GB HD since he had a guarantee.

Just to recap..

I build hd from scratch, generate pw, lock it w/ that pw.. And I'm done right?

Just to remind you.. I have all the font hacks and all that stuff already on my C, so do I need to run that hacks thing?

Correct! Using the right eeprom of course. And by careful with the locking tools. Triple check the passwords you enter and do as told and backup the log files.
