Title: 007 Exploit And Pheonix Loader?

Just checking the last xbox I did a soft mod too, I had to install XBL in order to update the dash and kernal.  I have a friend that also wants his done.  He has yet to install XBL, so it's the very old dash.  My question is, can I update the dash and kernal so that Pheonix will work without having to update to XBL dash 2.0?  If so how?
