Title: No Modchip Hdd Replacement Tutorial
Post by: Thing2 on December 29, 2003, 09:50:00 PM
VERY GOOD TUTORIAL BAD HEX

Worked perfectly for me...the only problem I had was with HDD_DRIVER...I needed to get a couple of .dlls before it would start, but after it started everything went smoothly.

Thank you very much! My 120GB is zooming smile.gif

I tried the other tutorial (the one that only uses Winhex) and it didn't work at all...I even went so far as finding the full version of that freakin' program because the trial wont let you do ANYTHING! In the end, everything in this tutorial worked perfectly!

Bravo.

ok, so i am at the very last step where i distribute the free space to the f drive. i cannot get it to work. i have sent the raw commands through flashfxp and still nothing. i tried that tutorial on freeing the extra "2 gigz" on the f drive, and still nothing. what else could i try?
i have teh seagate baracuda (sp?) 120gb 8mb cache

ok, when i go into the f drive it says
"226-free disk space under this directory : 126.295.715.944"
in the status box, but i am unable to transfer anything onto the drive, i get this message:

"226 Transfer finished successfully. Data connection closed.
List Complete: 56 bytes in 0.09 (0.05 KBps)
Transfer queue completed
1 File failed to transfer"

edit: got it, had to unlock the hard drive first with configmagic

I just tried to put a new western digital 120 gb hdd in my xobx.. I went through all the steps unlocking it and transfering one contents of the drive to another and that all worked perfectly.  Now when I go to relock the drive, it says that the device is not ready.  I checked in atapwd.exe and see that the drive has a + sign under the f column.  This means that the drive is freeze locked.  Is there any way to remove this so I can go ahead and lock the drive to put it back in my xbox.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Can you copy and run games from the XBox HD with out the use of a hardware mod? Kids are scrathing the games all up. And can I place the apropiete software on the drive eg: boxeplorer while the HD is still unlocked to handle file management?  Sorry ... I'm new at this XBox Stuff.

I don't see a response to the above post about the +F and I'm having the exact same problem. Does anyone have a solution for this? I'm using a Seagate ST3120026A 120g hdd and also can not lock it (but it does support locking). I get the device not ready response.

Here's more detail of my process:

1. Got the XHDD unlocked and backed up to my PC with HDD_Driver.

2. None of my drives have a jumper option for "Secondary Master". It's either Master, Slave or Cable Select. So both drives (XHDD and PCHDD) are set to master. XHDD on the IDE2 cable and PCHDD on the IDE1 cable. Windows boots that way. If the XHDD is the main primary, it won't boot as there's no OS on that drive (first drive in IDE chain). Anyway.. It's working this way ok from all I can tell. The new XHDD is a Seagate 120g ST310026A. I run the LIVEINFO program, load the eeprom.bin from my original XHDD backup and get the calculated password from the bottom section of information.

3. I run xhdprepa and zero out the 4096 bytes (that works quick). I then run Hex Workshop as indicated in the guide and edit in the BRFR. NOTE! I do get an error here about invalid partition size or something from Hex Workshop. It does allow me to continue on and edit the BRFR section. (This happens whether there's a partition on the new XHDD or not)

4. I then run HDD_Driver and it does detect an XHDD (the new one). It does not however give me the invalid filesize error like it did with the original XHDD. I tried a few different things to make it do so, like having a partition before doing #3 above, not having a partition, having one and having it formatted.. nadda. No filesize error. Just the one from Hex Workship in #3 above.

5. Continuing on, I restore my backup with HDD_Driver to the new XHDD. It restores fine (no errors).

6. I boot to my floppy and run ATAPWD. It shows the drives and for the XHDD the flags are as such:

S E L F X V
+ - - + -

7. I run the HDLOCK program and select my new XHDD and then enter the calculated password from LIVEINFO. I get a response saying "Device not ready."

I can't get past this point (Step 8) as the drive won't lock..

HELP! sad.gif

Try setting the jumber on your new hdd as "cable select". Then put it on primary slave and run hdlock or unlockx with this setup. Works for me - dont know why?

BTW. Check links in my sig. for an easier/automatic way of upgrading you HDD using softmods.

Turns out that it was my PC's BIOS that was turning on the Freeze Lock flag of the HDD's. I took the HDD to another PC and it was not freeze locked. I was able to do HDLOCK without a problem.

Ok, I tried that as well. Nada. I grabbed your XBOXHD thing, burned it, booted it, did it, and all it does is get me back to the same point that I was at before.

I can't get the drive to lock.

I just tried relocking my XBOX original drive as well, and I've got the same problem. Both of them in atadrv show F+ for freeze lock, so I'm guessing that's the problem.

HOW DO YOU TURN OFF FREEZE LOCK?

Unless I can do that so that I can lock the drive, my XBOX is now a paper weight.  sad.gif

I would like to do the HD swap, but I have a mod chip.  It's one of the first gen chips, Enigmah, which doesn't support the larger HD like the later chips do.

How would I do the swap?  Seems like I could skip some steps or would have to do something differently.  What do you think?  Thanks.

As Rainchaser says I think the "Freeze Lock" command is issued by some bioses. I dont think there is any way to turn it off. In my case the drive is not frozen when connected to the primary slave channel, but always when connected to the primary master. Other than that, try another PC...

I am at the part where you use HDD_Driver to make a copy of the xbox drive but I can't get the damn thing to run because I am missing tons of DLL files it would seem. So far it has asked me for stuff like:
MFC42D.dll
MSVCRTD.dll
MFCO42d.dll
and so on...I have found some but the list seems endless and I am unable to find some of them. Is there some kind of DLL pack or something I need?

If your missing the DLL files needed to run HDD_DRIVER, try this:

[1] Download "MS Service Pack 6 for Visual Studio 6.0" from MS (Vs6sp6.exe).  NOTE: The following URL is incorrect because this forum automatically converts "The name of Bill Gates company" to "ms".  Please copy the URL and then replace "ms" with the full company name.

http://www.MS.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=A8494EDB-2E89-4676-A16A-5C5477CB9713&displaylang=en

[2] Instead of launching "Vs6sp6.exe", open it with WinZip.

[3] Extract "VS6sp61.cab" and "VS6sp64.cab" to a temporary location.

[4] Open "VS6sp61.cab" with WinZip and extract the following DLL files:
msvcrtd.dll
msvcirtd.dll

[5] Open "VS6sp64.cab" with WinZip and extract the following DLL files:
mfc42d.dll
mfco42d.dll

[6] Place all four of these files in the same directory as the HDD_DRIVER.

This worked on my WinXP system!

This is not B.S.  The only thing I had to do different was connect my "OS Drive" as "Primary Master" and my "Xbox Drive" as "Secondary Master" (instead of vice versa as the instructions tell you).  Then, you have to choose option "3" instead of "1" to select the Xbox hard drive while using some of the utilities.  Otherwise, it worked perfectly.

I've now modded 2 XBOXs using the "Game Save Exploit" (007 with EvoX).  Once EvoX is running, I use it to copy "ltools" to the Xbox.  Once "ltools" is running, it has an option to install the UDE (Ultimate Dashboard Exploit).  At that point, I have a fully functioning hacked Xbox.  Then, I use the instructions at the beginning of this thread to upgrade the hard drive.

This method no longer works on the newer dashboards.  If you have an older xbox then you shouldn't have any issues with it.  The last two newer boxes I tried it on I had to end up doing the hotswap trick to get into the drives as the gamesave hacks didn't work.

I just followed the tutorial and now im getting error 6. I had a friend do the softmod and now im tring to put in a 80gb drive. I also tried using http://www.supertrick.net/tutorials/softmod003.asp
and got the same problem so i unlocked the drive and tried you tutorial. Now i cannot even unlock the drive. Any ideas why i would get the error and better yet how i can unlock the drive?

Also just curious why the password to lock the original drive is different from the password to lock the replacement? It seems to me that they should be the same.

Is there another way to unlock the drive, i know the password i used to lock it but unlockx and hdunlock dont work.

I guess i could have put in the password incorrectly but i doubt it.

Any ideas, otherwise im off to get a new one...

hi guys,
i successfully unlocked backed-up and relocked my original HDD.
but my problem is finding a key for my new HDD samsung sv80004h
on my primary cpu AMD 64 3400 + live info doesn't recognize my new HDD and when i try to load my eeprom it says it's not a valid one.
i tried it on my other CPU Pentium 4 1.6ghz and liveinfo detects the hard drive but it still says my eeprom is invalid.
i thaught maybe i didn't need to load my eeprom file sinse it showed me a generated password for the new HDD.
i used it to lock it and i made sure it was locked before i put it in my xbox.
but i get an error screen after the X logo loads.

My questions are:
do i need to load the eeprom?
why doesn't liveinfo recognize my eeprom?
is there another program that can generate a key for my new HDD?
Thank you in advance for the help.

Badhex,
in your next tutorial edition maybe you can address that if you have written BRFR at the 600h offset of your drive, even with a format and OS install the modification may still be there.  If you launch hdd_driver and that drive is the first physical drive, then it will still detect it as an xbox hd and select that one to work from (since it starts from physical disk 0, and seq. goes though to 255).  If the user is not careful they can overwrite their dirve.  This is the case if they do not follow your instructions fully and left the os drive master.

But somehow I can't seem to lock my new harddisk. In liveInfo is says: locking: Not Locked and in UnlockX it says: Locable Not locked.
So I presume it can be locked. I got the sane code from LiveInfo and xboxhd, But when I try to lock it hdlock says: Device not ready and UnlockX says Not locked.

I don't have the +f in atapwd.

How can I lock this drive ?

And what code do i use to lock my old xbox hd with ? Is it the same code as I would use for my new hd ?

Hi,

Can anyone give me some help with the HDD_Driver part of this turorial... I have downloaded the app from the usual place but it's complaining about missing DLL's. I started downloading the missing DLL's from the Interweb but when I run now I am getting a "Ordinal Not Found" error.

Does anyone have a fully working version of this app with all the required DLL's that they could help me out with or perhaps there is even an alternative that I am not aware of???  Please!!!

Cheers
Paul.

Hello All !

Firstly, Many thanks for such a wonderful resource as this tutorial (and forum in general) has given me the tools I needed to completely trick out an old and now vital part of my home entertainment system  biggrin.gif

A word of advice, DO NOT PUT HDLOCK.EXE on a bootable CD !! I thought I could get away without having to install a floppy. It seems that hdlock.exe needs to write to the media that it is running from. When trying to lock my new HDD, hdlock.exe would return a 'runtime error' after typing the key and pressing enter.

I thought I had hosed my XBOX as I could not lock either my new HDD or the original.

2 days and much panic later i installed a floppy drive in desperation and put hdlock.exe on a floppy. I still booted from the CD, but then switched to B: and locked the drive from there. All was well and my 5yr old was no longer giving me dirty looks and idly thumbing a (then useless) XBOX controller.

I hope this prevents another modder from hours of grief.

Cheers !

Happy Modding

No MODChip HDD Replacement Tutorial
By: BaD_HeX

Get the following programs from the usual places:
atapwd
Hdlock
Hdunlock
Hddisabl
007 gamesave exploit (or mech assault)
liveinfo
hdprepar
HDD_Driver
Windows 95/98/ME bootdisk maker

Step 1: Making our “tools” disk
Use a Windows 95/98/ME bootdisk maker to format a blank floppy disk.  This will be our dos bootdisk used for unlocking our xbox harddrive.

After that has completed copy the following files to the new bootdisk:  atapwd.exe, hdlock.exe, hdunlock.exe, hddisabl.exe.

Take the disk out and label it xbox tools disk and set it aside.

Step 2: Getting our xbox drive key
Using another tutorial, load evox up using the 007 gamesave exploit on your xbox.
It is important to not use any bios loaders, font hacks, sound hacks, or anything like this as we need a pure key generated for your xbox harddrive.

Once you are in evox run the backup option in the settings menu.  This will create a backup folder in your evox base directory (not your c drive).  To find it, if you used the 007 hack, simply FTP into your xbox and go to the following folder: /E/UDATA/4541000d/000000000000/

There you should see the backup folder created by evox.  Copy that folder somewhere to your computer where you can access it easily.

Once copied open up the folder and there should be the following files inside it:  bios.bin, disk.bin, eeprom.bin, hddinfo.txt, hddkey.bin

Open up the file hddinfo.txt.  In this file is three lines and by now you should notice it contains one called hdd key.  This is the Key that will be used to unlock your xbox harddrive.  Either print this file or write down the group of numbers.  The key will be used without the :’s or trailing 00s when entering it in the unlock programs. (ie. 157560ab… not 15:75:60:ab)

Step 3: Unlocking the xbox harddrive
Shutdown your PC and remove all drives except for a drive that contains your OS and is bootable.  This drive should be set as secondary master (use jumper).

Open up you xbox and remove the xbox hardrive.  If you are not sure how to open your xbox and remove the harddrive, look for another tutorial on how to do it.  Set up this drive on your computer as primary master (use jumper).

Insert your xbox tools disk and turn on your PC.  You can skip any harddrive detection that your bios does, as it will not correctly detect the xbox drive.  Once you are at a DOS prompt run the following tool from your bootdisk:  atapwd.exe

The program should detect your two drives and you should notice that the xbox drive is flashing (if not refresh the list using the shortcut displayed).  Also check out the SELFXV and notice that the xbox drive has a few more + signs then the normal PC drive.  In the next steps we will unlock the drive (the L column) and then disable drive locking (the E column) on the drive which in turn will make those two columns display “–“ signs.  Press ESC to exit the program.

Next run the following program from the xbox tools disk: hdunlock.exe
Here is will display a list of drives where you can choose which one you wish to unlock.  Usually the xbox drive will be choice 1, but verify that that is correct.  If so press one to select the xbox drive.

Now you will be asked to enter the key the program will use to unlock the drive.  Enter in the key that we printed in step 2.  Remember you should not enter in “:”’s or any trailing 00’s in the key.  An example key will look will end up looking like: 112233445566778899aabbccddeeff

When you press enter it should pause for a moment and then say “done”.  To verify that the unlock key worked correctly run the file: atapwd.exe.  You should see under the L column of the drive there is now a “-“ sign meaning the drive is unlocked.  If for some reason it still has a “+” under it you did not successfully unlock the drive and you should start over from step 2.  For those of us who did it correct the first time, we now need to disable the locking on the drive so when we restart it doesn’t relock.

Run the following program from the xbox tools disk: hddisabl.exe
This should bring up a similar selection menu where you can pick the xbox drive.  Just choose choice 1 (or the one that you believe is your xbox drive).  Then you will have to enter the xbox drive key again.  When finished it should say “done” again.  Verify that you disabled locking by running: atapwd.exe.  Under the “E” column you should now see a “-“ sign meaning you disabled locking of the drive.

Step 4: Backup the xbox harddrive
Now that we have completely unlocked our drive we can reboot the computer without the bootdisk to get into windows.  It may take a bit longer to start the OS as you have moved your drives around in the process of this tutorial.  Be patient!  Once in windows we will need to run HDD_Driver.

When you run HDD_Driver you should get a message box that says it detected an xbox harddrive (your primary master drive).  Then when you hit OK it will give you an invalid filesize error.  Don’t press ok, but instead go to menu system of the program and select backup the hdd.  Don’t do this unless you get the invalid filesize error or you know for sure it detected your drive.  Select a safe place to backup your drive, but remember you need aprox 8gb of space to hold the xbox drive image.

Go get something to eat, pee, whatever as it will take some time to backup the drive.

When finished you will need to shutdown your PC and remove the xbox drive.  You can now set it aside for use as a paperweight or clock.

Step 5: Prepare the new hardrive
Connect the new drive as primary master (use jumper) and start up your machine.  Once in windows you may need to refresh the system under device manager to detect the new drive.

I’ve noticed in all other tutorials that you need a lockable drive; however, I have yet to encounter a harddrive that was not lockable.  You should be safe with a newer drive.

First load up the liveinfo program and click load eeprom.  Then select the file eeprom.bin from the backup folder you got from evox.  The program will display some information regarding your xbox system.

Go to the second section of the program where it has a list of harddrives.  Select you xbox replacement drive (make sure you know it is the replacement drive) and the program will generate a key that we will use to lock the drive with.  Print this key or write it down EXACTLY on a piece of paper as we will need this while we are in dos.

Now we need to prepare the drive to look like an xbox drive.  Use the program hdprepar to zero the first 4096 sectors.  BE VERY CAREFUL to select the correct replacement drive to zero as you could destroy your OS partitions if you select the wrong drive.  Once finished close the program as we’re done with that.

Step 6: Hex the Replacement Drive
Load up your favorite hex editor that can hex edit the clusters of a drive.  I use hex workshop, but you are free to use anything else.  What we need to do is hex edit the xbox replacement drive so that HDD_driver thinks it’s an xbox harddrive.  Browse to the offset of 0x600 on the drive.

Here is how to do it using Hex workshop:
Go to the disk menu and select open drive.  Select the drive you believe is the replacement drive.  You will know it is the correct one by a screen full of 0000’s or mostly 0000’s.  Now hex worksop lays everything out in sectors… there are 200 offsets in a sector so you need to hit the -> button on the toolbar 3 times to get to the correct offset.  At the beginning of this page you must type in the ASCII values BRFR.  So to do this you simply go to the right of the line and at the beginning of the page type the letters.  On the left side you should see the Hex values 4252 4652 in red.  That’s it, save the changes and exit the program.

Step 7: Restore the backup of your original xbox drive
We now have a drive that HDD_driver will think is an xbox harddrive.  Start up HDD_driver and you should get the successfully detected message followed by an invalid filesize error.  Don’t click ok when you get the invalid filesize error, but instead go to the menu and select the restore xbox hdd option.  Select the image file we created in step 4 as the restore file.  You will then be given the option to restore specific parts of the image file.  For a complete restoration of the xbox harddrive select the last option in the right column to restore the whole drive.  Wait awhile while the program does all the copying and when it is done you have an exact replica of the xbox harddrive.  From here we need to lock the drive like the original one was.

Step 8: Lock the replacement drive
Place your boot disk back in the drive and restart your computer so it boots from the floppy.

Once in dos run the following program from the disk: atapwd.exe
You should see the replacement drive and your OS drive here.  We can also see from the SELFXV that the replacement drive does not have locking enabled and is currently not locked.  We need to change that so the xbox believes it has a legit drive installed.  Press ESC to exit atapwd and go to the dos prompt.

Run the following program from the xbox tools disk:  hdlock.exe
Now you should see a screen that looks much like the unlock tool.  This time select the drive that you believe is the replacement drive.  Most likely it will be choice 1 if your drives are configured the way they should be.

You will now have to enter in the key that was generated from liveinfo in step 5.  Make sure you enter the key EXACT.  Go over what you typed in 2 to 3 times to make sure that this is the correct key.  After you hit enter you should see the “done” message.  A file will be created on your xbox tools disk containing the key information if you should ever want to change the drive again.  To be safe you can lock the drive again using the same key from step 5 again.  To verify that the drive will lock run atapwd and there should be a “+” sign under the E column.  There will be no + under the L column, but that is normal as it will lock itself the next time it is powered up.

Step 9: Final Setup
Now that our drive is setup set the jumper on the replacement drive to cable select and place hook it up to the xbox like the original harddrive was.  Upon starting up the system you should get the MSdashboard , evox, or whatever else that loaded like the original.  Congradulations!

There is 1 more thing that some of you may need to do though.  My xbox required me to format my partition6 drive F to unlock the extra space on the 120gb drive I installed.  You can do this rather easy through the evox’s FTP server.  Connect with FlashFXP or another good FTP program and send the following raw commands:

Formatpath \Device\Harddisk0\Partition6
FormatDrive (number)

Make sure you type it in exactly as the wrong "\"'s can cause the wrong drive to be killed.

Replace (number) with the number you get from Fromatpath.  This should then format the drive and give you your remaining disk space.

Step 10
Done and Done!

Hi, I just read over your HD tutorial and it seems pretty cool. Worded very nice. Very easy to understand. (Even for a newb like me! =)

Anyway I just had one question.
In the very beging you said:
"It is important to not use any bios loaders, font hacks, sound hacks, or anything like this as we need a pure key generated for your xbox harddrive."

But I have already installed the phoenix bios loader using this tut here: http://freexevoxtut.freeservers.com/index2.htm

At the very end of the tut it says:
(or if you want you can instlal the bios loader into the c drive so it uses the bios loader as the default and not evox)
And I did....So when I boot up evox it uses the phoenix bios loader all by it's self.

Will it not work with a loader like this? (I'm gussing no sorry for the stupid question)

If not then what do I need to do to fix this? I am pretty sure I backed up my C: before I installed the phoenix bios loader. Can I just copy my whole C: over whats on the box and have it go back?

P.S.
Thank you for this great tutorial and any help you can offer.

This sounds like a great tutorial. It's something I'd definitely like to try out in the future. BTW, did you send it to the main site? Hopefully it'll get added there so I don't have to look for it through dozens of forum pages when I'm ready for the swap. Thanks.

SpikeMage:
It's ok that you installed the loader already.  The important part is you use the evox 007 gamesave exploit to generate the backup folder.  The prob I was pointing out is that if you use the font hack (which modifies signing) or a bios loader (which uses a bios other then the installed) you will end up with a corrupt hdd key.  Make sure you just use the default gamesave evox to backup the box.  By simply having both of those on the drive will not cause any trouble if you boot off the 007 game CD and use the gamesave hack to get to a dashboard screen.

yodanut:
Yep, I sent it in to the main page to get it listed.  It is already listed in the main sticky post in this forum section.

does this mean i can unlock the xbox-hd on a pc w/o hotswapping?

btw, i found a program called UnLockX... will this also be of help?

here's the feature of the program:
1) Now will Lock your hard drive or unlock and disable passwords all in one program !!
2) Will backup your password to a file and will not over-write it
3) Password backup file is time stamped.
4) No need to use atapwd.exe to view drive status. You can see at a glance if your drive is locked or unlocked.
5) Now you only have to enter your password one time.

This doesn't require a hotswap at all.  I'm not sure how unlockx works, however you are free to try that out instead.  It should work fine if it does everything it says it does.

i was wondering, if this program can disable hdd pass-lock and can backup hdd-pass to a file, does it mean to say, it can just make any locked xbox-hd work as an ordinary pc-hd w/o worries of hotswapping, or at least knowing the xbox-hd-pass (via running Config Magic on an xbox)?

Just a stupid question.  I followed the Tut thru every step and it worked great.  The only place I am a little stuck is on Step 9.  I want to format my Partion6 F.  I notice that you say to use FlashXP to send the command: Formatpath Device/Harddisk0/Partion6

That produces a 8 digit # that you then put into the FormatDrive (number).  My only question is where should you be on your drive when you enter that Raw command?  If you enter when you are in the root of the Xbox then you get an 8-digit # but if you switch to the F: drive 1st and then enter the Formatpath Device/Harddisk0/Partion6 command then it gives you an entirely different 8 digit code.  Sorry to come off noobish but I spent a little time setting up and doing this Hdd switch and I do not want to screw it up.  A little guidance in this one area would be super appreciated.

Hats off Bad Hex for a great Tut  ph34r.gif

Ok, so a response would be super cool from you great folks with all your worldly knowledge.  Everything is working perfectly on the xbox except for the fact that when I look in the system info under Drive F: it does not report the size for my 80gig hdd.  I tried sending that format command that is explained in the Tut and it instantly just popped up and said format complete..I would think that it would take a few secs to a min to do this properly and besides that it did not change the size in the system info.  I am positive that this is due to a user error with me being the idiot noob user.  I would just like to finish this last step so if one of you kind ppl would email me or post the response then I will try to return the favor someday...

Thx again,

On your xbox tools disk there should be a file that contains the incorrect password you used to lock the drive.  You can simply use that to hdunlock and then hddisable the drive like it was the old xbox drive.  Then proceed to relock it using the correct password.

Seems stupid, but...
I've gotten all the tools, except when I downloaded Liveinfo beta 2.rar from team-assembly (the zip here on xbox-scene is corrupt) it's a 111kb rar file containing only a 2kb readme!

Since it's supposedly legit freeware, can someone point me to a valid download?

Thanks!

Blank V1.0 EEPROM.bin
Blank V1.1 EEPROM.bin
LiveInfo.exe

No download manager. I've tried it with IE6 & Firebird 0.6 Guess I'll try at work tomorrow.

Thanks for all the help guys (in this thread & others), I've got a working copy of liveinfo ( from one of the team-assembly guys, no less), so now that I've got all the tools, I'll be getting a 100-120 gig drive in the next couple weeks smile.gif

btw, what's the prefered tool to rip to the hdd? I've got dvd2xbox on my 8gig, but haven't really tested it. No seagate = no extra 2 gigs. Tried formatting, no dice, so we'll see later.

OK, here is the problem. I have Windows 98se on all my computers and I want to install a bigger hard drive on my Xbox.  What do I need to do dif. in this tut. to get it to work?  From what I read you can't use liveinfo on a Windows 98 computer, is this true? if so, what do I need to do to get the same info. liveinfo gives you?  I'm very picky with what I do to my Xbox and I don't try or install anything 'till it's been tested and proven to work, can't afford to buy a new box.  If anyone knows how to install a new hard drive with a Windows 98 machine then please write a tut. or let me know how it is done.  By the way, THANKS to everyone for the programs that allowed me to install a modless hack in my Xbox.  I'm using the audio hack by Mordenkainen

I'm not sure if liveinfo works on win98, however, it won't break anything if you try to run it to see.  All liveinfo is used for is generating a new key for locking your replacement drive.  If it doesn't work, any other program that can do this will work just fine.

I downloaded the liveinfo file over and over again thinking it was corrupted too. But its NOT!! lol

Use winrar to open it instead of winzip and it should open up fine.

I hope i can do this tutorial right.

Only problem is Hex I already installed evox using 007 AUF hack and installed the font hacks as well as the signed phoniex bios loader. I noticed someone else mentioned this before, but how would I go about doing this exactly?

Exactly what I told spike.  All you need to do is run evox using the gamesave hack (so bust out the game again).  Then make sure you get the backup folder from the correct place.  The reason for this is the font hack causes evox to generate a key that only works with the font hack.   Would be fine except the xbox unlocks the drive before the font hack runs.  The bios loader upsets it even more because it will generate the key according to the loaded bios.

To make a long story short.. just use the gamesave hack to backup and then grab the backup folder from the gamesave hack's folder that I show you in the tutorial.

When I installed my new harddrive no tutorials warned me of this and I already had the font hack, bios loader, and evox installed.  The key it generated did not work when trying to unlock the drive.  I would only assume the key generated from liveinfo would have been wrong also.  When I just loaded evox through the gamesave hack it generated a good key because it didn't run the font hack or the bios loader.

If it says it backed up it will only take a few seconds if that.  You need to check the xbox hdd for a backup folder.  It will most likly be on the E drive if you are following my tutorial (in the 007 or mechassault gamesave folder).  The default ini included in the 007 gamesave hack has the correct backup function included in the ini file.

The drive has to be locked before put into your xbox.  If it is not and you have no modchip/flashed bios then you will get a service error.  You can use it to unlock and disable locking to be used on your PC if you like.

First off, I want to say, "Thanks Hex!".

I followed your tut to the letter.  But first, I wanted a way to test it. I dug out an old 5 gig maxtor I used as a test drive for linux, etc.

I yanked my xbox hdd, unlocked it, and backed up the image (about 3.9-4 gigs). I used liveinfo on the maxtor. I thought, 'it's small, but this will test everything for me before I hose simething important'.
Got the security code from liveinfo, and following everything step-by-step, I put the image on the 5gig maxtor. It went on fine, then I proceeded to lock it.

Happy with my progress, I put in the code. Nothing. Drive wouldn't take it. I thought, 'oh no' . Tried repeatedly. No go.

Ran liveinfo again. This time, I noticed in the bottom of liveinfo "drive locking not supported".  Knowing the age of this maxtor, I was actually relieved. Simple solution. This drive is so old it doesn't support locking.

So, I re-read the tut again,  and locked the xbox hdd again & reinstalled it. Xbox is just fine, with morden's hack on it.
So, having the image on my PC, I just finished ordering a 120gig WD from newegg ($94 with free shipping). When it arrives, I just run thru the 2nd 1/2 of the tut again the put the image on the new drive & I'll be set. This rules.

Thanks again, Hex!

This is by far the best tut on this site. very easy to follow and clear. i am now running an old 40gb seagate out of my computer thanks to this guide. BaD_HeX - you kick ass! thanx

one thing that i would change though, insted of telling ppl to pitch their old drive relock it and put it in a safe place. i took the font exploit off and set it aside so if i ever get stuck in a clock loop or something weird like that, pop out the new drive and pop in the old. boom instant fix.

Finally! woot I am done modding my xbox with just software exploits ONLY!

This tutuorial is by far the best one out period! If you dont want to buy a modchip and solder your board...  just use this exploit and you will still be able to load evox on it and also have a 120gb HD. Very easy to follow and straighforward. All the steps work... Its just if you run into other problems you should try to fix them on your own before posting questions. For example I had a whole bunch of .dll errors with trying to run HDD_Driver but I knew it wasnt the tutorial.. It was just a software issue compatibility... I was able to find all of them on google - simple fix - using vs 6.0.8168.0 library.  wink.gif

I used 120gb Seagate 7200rpm ST3120026A - Does not overheat and super quiet! I did my research... Locked!  biggrin.gif

Only problem I experienced was this afternoon when I got home and tried to turn my xbox on it would boot up and then on the xbox screen, the green eject lights would keep flashing in green and reboot and phoenix would not load evox. It took 3 reboots and I got worried something went wrong. So I was going to open it up but by the time I went to go get my tools EvoX loaded up. Wierd. So I rebooted it and it loads right away. Maybe the hard drive has to get warmed up a lil... I dunno. Let me know if anyone else experienced this problem.

Anyways back to having fun with my 120GB space now.  rolleyes.gif

BaD_HeX you are a genius!! Thanks for the awesome tutorial and sharing this knowledge with us.

I was just wondering...how much of it will I be able to use? I am using the MA hack and PBL bios. How much space will they be able to use?

Anyway i will post how it goes after I am done.

137gb I believe...

anyhow, I have the same reboot loop sometimes.. To tell you the truth I think it has to do with the font hack.  The buffer overrun may not be the most stable thing in the world.  Most times it has reboot is like 3 times before it loaded up into evox. It usually happens if I reset real quick.  Could also have to do with the harddrive spinning up.

Nice tutorial, but the use of hddriver is not good. I used that first, but it did not copy my whole e: drive.

A better program is WinHex. Then select clone disc and it will make a perfect copy.

Anyway thnx alot for this tutorial!

I now have a Maxtor 120 gig running, thnx to you!

Is there some kind of DLL pack or something I need?

just use WinHex to make a copy of the xbox drive! That will work 10x better and no need for these stupid dll files.

Can you also use WinHex to copy back over to the new drive?  I'm sure that's a stupid question, but somebody had to ask biggrin.gif

Well I found a better copy of it that had all the dll files. These DLL files can't be illegal can they? Why aren't they in the zip on this site?

Anyway I think I fucked up when I was making my image. It didn't copy the 3 games I already had on there or any of my progs. Also all of the saves that were from games run off the HD turned into *unkown save* or something.
That's not so bad but I lost my Crono Triger save and I was almost done.   sad.gif

Anyway small price to pay I guess. Everything else works great and I almost have all my games on the drive.

Thanks Bad_Hex for this great tut.

Wait! I had this exact same problem.

Get the registered version of winhex and connect the original xbox harddisk AND the new harddisk for your xbox to the PC. Then start it up and load winhex.

Now just select clone drive and make sure you select the original xbox HD as the source and the new xbox harddisk as the destination.

It will take some time, but it will go OK smile.gif

After that lock the drive with the appropiate key and put it in your xbox.

And voila! All saves working fine and all the games you had at the old drive are also there!

Hddriver sucks ass, winhex is the best!

Well waaaaaayyyyyy to late for that. I already have like 30 games 4-5 emulators and a few apps on my new HD.
And I think losing my saves and stuff was user error. My image only came out to like 4gigs but at that point i was just like "fuck it I want my new HD"

hey bro, i did everything in your faq, but i must have screwed up somewhere.

first, i couldn't get to windows when i put my new hd as the primary master and my win hd as the 2ndary.

second, i couldn't lock my hd, when I used the key it says "Device is not ready" though it was lockable and i got the key correct, even tried my older key to be on the safe side. It is a lockable drive though, it reads Unlocked,Frozen, my unlockable drive literally says "Unable to lock"......SO, any advice is great

ok, got it locked, didn't work, think i missed something

how do i change offset to 0x600? mine starts at 0x80, and when i clock -> it goes to sector 1, 2, then 3 of 240121727

Post by: BaD_HeX on October 03, 2003, 11:34:00 AM
Each Sector is 0x200 long (512 bytes), so you push -> 3 times and add that to the start of the sector in the right column.  Doing the math 200 + 200 + 200 = 600.

I am stuck on Step 5.   Liveinfo does not see any drives, all it says is Physical Drive 0   and in the drop box there is Physical Drive 1 2 3.

What do I do?

The drive I am trying to use is WD800JB

Liveinfo doesn't "see" my external usb hdd. I'm running win2000pro on a 500 mhz notebook. Liveinfo "sees" the hdd in the notebook just fine. Is this because Liveinfo bypasses all device drivers and therefor isn't aware of the external usb drive, or am I doning something wrong?

So...has anyone done this successfully with Winhex? ANyone else that is? Is it easier than the other way? If so...which steps do you skip? And which do you keep?

Do you just clone the XBOX HDD right onto the new one? Then lock the new one? Is it really that simple?  blink.gif

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Yes, I used WinHex and it's much easier then HDD Driver. You can skip the hdprepar thing (not needed) als you can skip step 6 fully. Then just load WinHex and select Clone Drive andthen you need to lock your new drive with the password you got from liveinfo. And done smile.gif

And Heteros:

The Maxtor 6Y120L0 IS lockable! I have it running in my xbox right now by following this tutorial! Try to connect it as primary master to your PC and your windows drive as primary slave.

Ok... Thank you all in advance for the Help....

I have the Maxtor 6Y120L0  It is currently set up as the Primary Master, (bootable secondary master)  atapaw.exe says: "it's Frozen", Live info says:, "Locking: Not Locked, Frozen"  I've done the Hex Edit, Copied the XHDD,  the Unlockx.exe says: "it's not a lockable drive", HDlock says: "Device not ready"    HELP!! I know this drive will work! I also spent the last 9 hours (while I was at work) Doing a zero reset full drive wipe... Thank you again THIS DANG THING WILL WORK!  blink.gif

Hmm a good alternative to get ur hdd password is - configmagic -- since I dont have a memory dealy or 007 or mechassault I ran this on my xbox while using the audio hak with pbl and still it gave me a good password  -- I use UnlockX to unlock and lock from a win98 boot disk ... worx slick ... had probs with other unlock programz ...
