a PS2 emulator would never be possible on the Xbox unless it got a much stronger processor. besides that, the PS2's hardware is a bit complex and i don't think it could be run on an Xbox.
as for a PS1 emulator, yes that would be better with the ram and processor upgrades, but it's not worth it. PS1 is like 30 dollars now...
the ram and processor upgrades are only useful for those looking to install Linux on the Xbox. And for 200, that's a pretty damn good deal.

As far as it being pointless or useless to have extra ram on the xbox, that's like saying it's pointless to have emulators at all on the xbox because you can just use them all on the pc. But some people hate using emulators on the pc, especially when you have younger kids etc playing. So you have to waste some money or whatever, but in general, videogames, entertainment etc is ALL a waste of money to begin with. If we want to spend 200 bucks to upgrade our user-friendly xboxes instead of upgrading our pcs then that is our choice.
Upgrading the Ram will mostly benefit linux, BUT there are emulators that crave more ram and a good amount of games won't run because of it (especially N64 emus). Also, there is a patcher you can download from xbox-scene to take the 64mb flag off so you can play all of your xbox games to utilize the extra ram. Giving you a slightly better picture quality and sound on certain games. Nothing so great to go crazy over, but every little bit helps, especially if you are going to play split screen games.
As far as needing a modchip to upgrade ram, as far as I heard you will need a new bios that will recognize the extra ram, but others say something else. The motherboard they provide isn't modded or anything, but according to the website they point out that it is "xbox live compatible" but I'll let you know one way or the other when I get everything.
But because of the fact that you need a locked hard drive you will need to at least temporarily mod it to install a hard drive and lock it with config magic etc.

i'm no developer, but from what i've heard, the PS2 processor is hard to program for and it does more gigaflops per second than the Xbox's so i'm not exactly sure how they could get the Xbox to emulate a system that kinda has a faster processor than the Xbox it self. But u never know, maybe i'm wrong.

GFLOPS (gigaflops) stands for billions of floating operations per second. This is basically how fast the processor can calculate stuff.
Xbox cpu= 733 mhz 2.93 GFLOPS
PS2 cpu= 294 mhz 6.2 GFLOPS
Xbox, however has more RAM and a better GPU so Xbox games generally look better than PS2 games, however, i think the PS2 can push more polygons per second (which means more stuff onscreen at the same time), but they don't look as good as Xbox's because of PS2's crappy GPU.

but with jsut 128 mb of ram games like gta vice citiy (when patched) run faster. the stutter in some places is not there anymore. a friend of mine upgraded his ram and so do i. well i try it. some problems with the chips as they are not the same version.
