You do need to boot the 007 game everytime you want to play a game...

I'm not 100% on this but I'm pretty sure an unmodded/unexploited xbox wont recognize anything through USB. USB functionality is created when the xbox is modded or exploited.
What you want to do is buy a Memory X Key or Action Replay. Because these are actual supported memory cards, the xbox dasboard willl allow you to transfer them to the harddrive.
if you want EvoX to be your permenant dashboard, you have to use the Free-X exploit or the auido exploit. By what I've heard, the Free-X is better. By replacing the font files, the xbox dashboard will load EvoX automatically on powerup.
The whole idea of this exploit is that you need not solder anything. However, if you want to add a USB port (other than the plug-and-play controller ones) you may as well flash teh TSOP.
If you are curious about any of the concepts I just mentioned, check out the other forums on this site.

The only reason I am curious a 128MB USB Pen Drive might work is because of this article: Linux Sourceforge
He points out in the article that "The Xbox also accepts most USB storage media, such as USB sticks or ZIP drives as memory units."
In order to use a USB pen drive, it says you have to let the Xbox format it to read like a memory card. What I am wondering is since the memory cards are less than 128MB, if this will work with my pen drive, and if I will be able to restore it too its original format.

The Xbox will read your device just fine, and format it. The catch is that once the XB can access it, Windows no longer can - it reads it as unformatted. To my knowledge, there is no software available yet to allow free transfers from PC to Xbox-formatted USB devices. There's a hacked version of the X-Key software, but they only hacked it to work with 007 saves. I'm somewhat puzzled that there isn't a program out there without having to spend money on a "particular" memory device.

I installed a usb port on my controller(wasn't too hard, just follow the tut) and tried using a 256 meg Memorex Thumbdrive. The xbox saw it as a memory card and formatted it; however, once i started up the hacked Mega X-Key software, it saw the thumbdrive as a mega X-key drive, but I couldn't copy the Mechassault saved game to it. Does the hacked software only work for the 007 AUF save?

Is there any other software other than the Mega X-Key software so I can write the saves to the thumbdrive?

Hey, have tried formatting your thumb drive back to a 256mb usb drive?

Yeah, it'll format back to a 250 meg thumbdrive after I used it as a memory card

I just wanted to clear some stuff up for you guys. You CAN use usb pendrives for the mechassualt AND 007 memory hacks, but the pendrive MUST be 32mb (like the X-Key) and only some brands work. The official X-Key software will work perfectly with those compatable drives, but your 128mb pendrive wil not work. I dont personally recomend any of that in the 1st place, The best way to use the audio/font exploints is to...
1.Hook an xbox controller w/ Mem card inserted into your PC w/ adaptor 2.Get the Xbox controller drivers (found on this site I think) 3.Download Official Action Replay software 4.Connect to the Mem card w/ Action Replay Software 5.Move the exploit savegame of your choice to the memcard 6.Boot the MS dash and copy the savegame to the HD 7.Boot into MA or 007, Choose LOAD, select the savegame from the HD 8.Ooooooh Yaaaaaah EvoX
They are working on the font/audio exploit code round tha clock, and a bug free version should be out soooon, within a week I hope. So if you want to boot into EvoX using the game everytime thats probably best, the current exploits are a little buggy, and I dont trust em, you shouldnt either. Keep this crud off of your Box till there is a stable version of pheonix or some other loader, and if you dont wanna mess with it, get a freakin matrix chip man!!! now only $40!!! Also, to comment on the statements made about "creative little ideas" what the heck do you call the idea to use FONTS for a hack in the 1st place! these ideas not only help people learn, but when dealing with things like exploits the only way you can get anywhere is by thinking new and fresh. Maybe some kid will post something on these forums that knowone else has even thought about before and it could become the next big thing, you never know man, just dont be a flame.

Yes!! I've been trying to use my 16MB FMI (CompUSA) flash drive for a while, but as with you, the hacked MX key sw would recognize the drive after it was formatted in FATX, but wouldn't do the copy. (See thread http://forums.xbox-s...1&t=83039&st=15 ) Upon reading this, I tried 007AUF, and it copied it successfully.
I own MA, not AUF, but I guess I'll go rent it for a few bucks. Then use the exploit to copy the MA savegame to the flash drive for future use (assuming I get FTP going properly).
Thanks for posting this info, gojtron.

I may be wrong here, but my understanding is that the Mega-X Key SW will only work properly with a 32 MB device. Since it read/writes FAT-X in a raw mode, the physical characteristics of the memory unit must be exactly what it assumes they will be.
I have used the method above of hooking a controller up to your PC and it works prefectly.
If you live near a Target, they have an 7' xbox ext. cable for 7.99 and a 6' USB ext. cable for 5.00. The Xbox cable is the "quick disconnect" connector on the controller wire. and the USB is a Male to Female.
Just cut both wires in half and twist the like colors together (excluding yellow. Just cut that one off). Wrap it up in electricians tape, solder it, whatever.
Now you have a PC -> Controller cable that you can hook the controler to your PC with, and an XBox controller port to USB adapter that you can use to hook up a keyboard for Linux.

With the straight MX key software, yes (or so I hear), but with the hacked one that is floating around (see the downloads section), you can apparently use flash drives of a variety of sizes.
I just got the AUF savegame copied to my hd and confirmed that it is working (now I just got to get FTP working). Again, that is with a 16 MB flash drive -- the cost effective option, $10 at compusa. Apparently they only hacked mx for AUF, because my mechassault savegame wouldn't copy.
Now (well, tomorrow morning) to connect and get MA onto the hd (and my flash drive) for future use, then I can return AUF to video store and all will be copacetic. Thanks again to those who replied.
