If the Vice City and GTA3 were from the same package (which is likely since theyre from the same store) they both might be faulty I'd try another one just to be sure...
-
Is the Grand Theft Auto that is for purchase in stores on one disc? The copies that Blockbuster has they are renting out as 2 seperate games. I might try another copy...again.
-
well, since you do have a chip on it I'd suggest trying to copy the game to your HD, and then running it off that. If you had any disk read errors, you'd notice them when your copying the CD over.....
Of course, dont forget that once your rental is up you'd have to delete it

Make sure your clock is accurate (GTA has some weird auto-save stuff)
Try unplugging your network cable (if connected) and/or making sure your dash isn't configuring the network

Make sure your XBOX SYSTEM CLOCK is set to the current date.

I had the same problem. my guess is that you are useing x2 bios which is the problem! you need to get the new m7 evolution x bios. it has a feature that overrides the clock and lets you play gt3. It is the problem. It happened to me, it would load just a little at the beginning and then stop right away at the same place every time. I can almost positively guaranteee that this is your problem, get m7!

Thanks for the help guys. I guess I'll be changing my Bios soon. Glad I wasn't the only one with the problem...thought i was just nuts, hah.
Thanks again.

For future reference: How to Fix Game Backup/Freeze Problems
-
Some of those things won't affect just backups. Retail discs will be affected as well.

M7 does work, worked for me. the only problem is that it doesent support a g drive or f past 137 gigs. so you must use xboxtool to modify it to make it better. If your drive is already partitioned for f to 137 gigs and then all rest to g drive then you probly wanna leave it this way, enable LBA48 support and make the bios 137 gig to partition6, rest to partition 7 and you shouldent have to reformat the hard drive. but if your like me and originally formated you had drive to have a g drive and have stuff on it right now and want all available space to go to the
f drive, partition 6, thats 250 gig on f drive for me. then you need to back up all games on computer then flash your modified bios, you modify your bios with xbox tool, you have to creat a bios useing m7, enable LBA48, and all space to partition 6, you then need to flash this new bios, then reformat your had drive so that it has a f drive, no g drive this time. then transfer all games from your computer back to your box.
