Title: How Do I Use De-soldering Braid?
Post by: creativedirt on June 30, 2003, 10:31:00 PM
De-soldering braid is very simple to use and can save you from solder flying everywhere with a de-soldering pump.  The best way I have learned for removing the solder from the lpc in v1.0 and 1.1 boxes is to use flux and wire snippers.

Snip the end of your braid so that it comes to a point, and dip it in some flux, doesn't take much.  It is important to use flux, even if the braid is "fluxed", a little dab won't hurt, actually, it will help.  Begin heating the edge of one of the lpc holes with your iron and once it liquifies, stick the pointy end of the braid into the hole and watch the solder run up the braid.  When you see the solder (shouldn't take long stop going up the braid; 5-9 seconds ), *remove the braid and then the iron.  Snip the braid off with the solder in it to a point and dip it.

It's a good idea to snip the solder out of the braid each time it wicks some.  If you got it right, the hole should be empty, or almost empty.  If the hole isn't empty, heat it with your soldering iron so that it is uniform.  Pretty easy.

*[The instructions that come with the braid *usually* says to put the braid over the area your are going to de-solder and heat the braid with your iron, remove the iron and then the braid.  That is a good way if you're de-soldering joints or a large blobs of solder.  The lpc is too small and it's hard to pinpoint the heat to the area you are working on and may overheat and if you don't time it right, the braid may get stuck and/or pull up a trace.]
