Post by: iwanttheagrocrag on August 20, 2004, 03:46:00 PM
whats up with this error i try to flash and it says this

# cd ../../media/E/UDATA/4541000d/000000000000/raincoat
# ./raincoat -p xbox.bin
raincoat Flasher  0.5  Apr 14 2003  [email protected]  http://xbox-linux.sf.net
Reading /etc/raincoat.conf... (unable to open /etc/raincoat.conf, using default list)

UNKNOWN DEVICE Read Only??? manf=0x09, dev=0x00
Try adding the device ID to /etc/raincoat.conf

i even added folders called etc and put raincoat.conf files in and still nothing. where is this folder? what is going on?

help would be appreciated, i also put the flash id in the raincoat and still nothing, im stumped.

After 2 days of head banging :angry: ive finaly managed to flash 1.2 xbox :D with the Raincoat utility. I assume you you already know how to copy the raincoat files to your unmodded xbox. There are a couple of methods look elsewhere for guide.
The image here, shows the 2 jumper (marked in RED) points which need to be bridged.  As you can see, there is no need to take the motherboard off anymore.
(IMG:http://homepage.ntlworld.com/abdul.kabir/images/xbox1_2.jpg)
You must use the latest version of raincoat 0.5 and 256k BIOS (Xecutor 4976.02 works fine)to flash the winbond chip. download raincoat 0.5

What's the command in Linux raincoat to back-up your oringinal xbox version 1.2 bios?  I heard it's 2mb.   Is it possible to back-up your original bios first before you flash the onboard winbond bios with the latest 256k x2 bios?

Can v1.2 be flashed with a multibios? if so, will the old method of installing swtichs on a19, a18, gnd, and vcc will do the same for the new version?  Has anyone try this before?  I want to do that with my version 1.2 box if that's possible.   Any info will be preciated on this topic.   Thanks in advance.

Flash = 0x04d5,"FUJITSU - MBM29F080A",0x100000
Flash = 0xadd5,"Hynix - HY29F080",0x100000

Seeing as no one has answered your question, I will.
Yes you can back up your original bios using raincoat.
After telnet-ing in and changing the directory to where you raincoat file is, use this command.
./raincoat -r <<bios save filename>>.bin
and it will back up your flash.

Psi

Smokeingit,
I am assuming this is the flash ID of the Newer ST 2 MB Flash that is now turning up in the 1.2's?
If so just add this to your raincoat.conf file.

Flash = 0x20B0,"ST 29F002",0x40000

And all should be well in your world.

Psi

I have posted this as a topic, however I think I should add this here as well....

The Hynix - HY29F002 is now making an appearance in the 1.2 Box.
For those of you that have this chip, and want to use the 007 trick, then please use Raincoat 0.3 and add the following to the raincoat.conf

Flash = 0xadb0,"Hynix - HY29F002",0x40000

Psylord discovered this flash in his 1.2 Xbox, and after some furious e-mailing last night and this morning we eventually got it worked out.

Please note, Without Psylord I wouldn't have discovered this information.
Many thanks for the info.

regards,
Psi

but the bottom point was completely covered by a black sticky thingy....

started to peel it back carefully but it had a lot of tack to it and I thought fuck that if it peels up a track I won't be very happy indeed

so I just did the top 2 points - and worked like a charm - phew

was shitting meself, like I said I didn't fancy risking the bottom one if I may of ripped a track from under that black sticker thing

bloomin' shit's the life out ya it does that game save.....

fuck all for a few secs, then I turned up telly, jumped out my skin with all them gunshots then the eject light goes orange - hmmm don't panic I say config magic final does that

carried on and yup 256kb bios

WWWWWWOOOOOO HHHHHHOOOOOOOO

thanks again to all who helped with this kick-ass tutorial

007 has to be the best xbox game ever and that is without even playing it

no Xecuter 2.2 needed for me and my ST bios

Kobe, are you 100% sure about the top two points?  Looking at the diagrams of the underside of the board, I'd have thought the two to connect would be the two to the right of these (one of which is right on the white line around the TSOP).

I had the same problem, but I have a 1MB chip and flashed only 256KB, so I just soldered the A18 and A19 lines to GND and it worked. This shouldn't be the problem for you since your chip is only 256KB, but maybe this helps... unsure.gif

EDIT: I also wanted to note that I did the 3 jumpers that were listed in this the two on top which were shown on the first post and the one under on the first post of the second page

I had your exact problem..

UNDO the jumper on the bottom of board.

and do the TOP of the board jumpers.. the 2 on top.

then use this raincoat that is "fixed conf file" by ebobex raincoat .501:
found here

then add this line to that raincoat.conf file:
Flash = 0x20B0,"ST M29F002BT",0x40000

then it worked like a charm flawlessly.

I do not know what chip was on it.. except I do know I got your same device id errors..
and mine was a ST  so I added that line because it was the only one not in .501
I have no clue if it was needed.. but it worked great.

I have a question for you...

do you have to do all 3 jumpers for all the 1.2's and 1.3's ??

I ask because in your tutorial post it says to..
and others state because things or people's xbox's have shorted out only doing the 2 top ones?

I ask because in my last 2 posts on this thread I only did the top 2 and UNDID the bottom one (if it was connected properly) and everything flashed..  could I be shorting it?  its a 1.2 as far as I can tell with a ST chip.

There's already a line for that chip in the raincoat.conf file that comes with raincoat 0.501:-
Flash = 0x20b0,"ST - 29F002",0x40000

By adding another one you're just doubling up.

If you get the 0x00, 0x09 error, check your soldering on the point near the LPC port.

If you get "flash not writable", check your soldering on the point near the TSOP (topside or bottomside, whichever one you used).

If you can't get the solder to bridge the jumpers properly (it balls up on either side instead), you can instead tin the points and solder a single strand of wire across them, then snap off the excess (carefully) leaving you with a 3mm wire bridge.

I did the tsop flash on the v1.0 no problem but the 1.2 is giving me tons of problems i have solered the top two points and the bottom point , last night i was solerign the one point on top and one on bottom as the auf newbie guide states, but i resoldered the bottom so much the trace on the bottom is half out .. so now i see this guide and i have both top points soldered perfect and the tsop still will not flash i have tried everything ...anyone help!!!??!

dude try to put a switch in it might help it might not and flash the tsop 1 half at a time

or try to update the raincoat to 5.0 or 5.1 that might be the prob

can anyone help me put 2 switchs in so i can run 4 bioses @ 256k
all i need are the points to solder with a 3 pin swith ON/ON

you can't put a switch on 1.2 bios it's only 256k bios chip.. im going to try this with the new raincoat ill post my results.. i hope it works im pretty sure it wont  seeing how that bottom trace is not connected..

I did a 1.2 ST last night.

Until i bridged the bottom of the board I was getting unknown device with raincoat 3 + 5 + 5.01

Just my 2 cents

That means you'd buggered up one of the sets of jumper points on the topside.  The ones closest to the TSOP, to be precise.  They're directly connected to the ones on the bottom, if you follow the tracks from the top two, they drop through two holes (one of which is on the white line surrounding the TSOP) and make a bee-line for the jumper points on the bottom side.

could someone please explain to me how to update the 007 linxu zip file to linux 0.51. i thought it was just replacing the config files but when i do that and ftp it to the xbox using xbsaves manager there is no saved folder in the 007 slot. also just to clear up which points need soldering on a version 1.2 is it the top 2 as shown here or one on top and one on the bottom. any help would much appreciated i was at this for over 10 hours yesterday.

Ok first off can any one confirm that the line of code
"Flash = 0x20B0,"ST 29F002",0x40000"
will allow Rain Coat to flash a ver1.2 with ST.

And second what is the newest and best bios out to use on a 256K bios in a ver1.2 ST

thank you ahead of time for your help it is greatly apprecticed.

FYI

I think that is unusefull to use raincoat.conf, because the precompiled raincoat has inside an update list of flash types and it search eventually for /etc/raincoat.conf (absolute path) and not raincoat.conf in the same dir where raincoat is lounched, so it will not load your edited raincoat.conf, unless you recompile raincoat to search in local path.

0x00 and 0x09 are the first 2 byte of all xbox bioses.
During flash identifying, pin WE and OE (do you know the 2 bridge to solder? that they are) are drived high and low in a special write sequence, the flash goes into a special status and then you read the first 2 byte that will be manufacturer and device codes, if OE and WE are not drived correctly (bad solder) you'll get simply the first 2 byte of the content of the flash.

Elloo Everyone,

I've got a problem. Apart from the obvious. My first experience with TSOP Flashing seems to have gone wrong some where.

I've got a Ver1.2 Xbox. I had followed tutorials with getting the 007 game save hack & raincoat configured.
All that went well. I was having troubles getting raincoat to recognise my flash chip. I downloaded and used the modified version of raincoat "raincoat 5.01". This worked fine, Detected my chip as a 256k chip ( ST-M29F002BT ) and allowed me to backup the original bios. Then I flashed it using the ( Xecuter2 - 4976.02 - 256k ) bios.

After the flash all seemed well, its went fine and completed. Then I turned the Xbox off thinking I had encountered 100% success. But then came the gut renching feeling of failure. Now when I turn it on the DVD tray wont eject. Also the eject light flickers red & green. I dont get any visual picture on the screen and no sounds either.

Does anyone know whats gone wrong ? I just keep reading about peoples success and I havent found any threads of things going wrong for anyone except raincoat not recognising the flash chip type. Could anyone shed some light on my problem ?

I've also got a thread regarding my problem here -->  http://forums.xbox-s...T&f=43&t=101183

How ever I thought this may be a appropriate place for my problem too.

Any help, suggestions, feedback, comments would be appreciated.

Thanxz in advance.

Whats with all the talk about 'top' and 'bottom' on the mobo.  There is one pair of points that need to be bridged and another pair somewhat below it right?  You don't actually have to flip the damn mobo right?  and do it on back?  I hope not.

thats probably them

the jumper points are two small soldering pads, they dont look like any other points nearby

Kard63

There is a set of jumpers on the top of the motherboard and a set on the bottom so yes you have to flly take out the mobo to do this.
