I should have mentioned the xbox is ver 1.6 and I have a 160g hard drive in it

assuming the chip is fitted correctly ...

are you using a BIOS you downloaded from the net? which one? xecuter 5035 BIOS prolly best just now (IMO)

sounds to me like one of three things though ...

either the hdd is dead
there is a loose connection with the hdd
or
you havent prepared your hard drive, like its sitting there as a PC HDD and not an xbox one.

Use slayers installer 2.6 to prepare the new hdd if you havent already, setting it up as a large HDD. If you have prepared the HDD check connections and if that doesnt work see if your old HDD is working ok
